    Six-pack for Monday

-- The #2 team in the BCS standings has lost on each of the last three weekends. Its BC's turn this week; they're 3-point underdog at Virginia Tech Thursday.

-- Before the Rockies did it, last team to win 21 of 22 after September 1 was the 1935 Chicago Cubs, the last Cub team to play in a World Series.

-- Only one major leaguer hit over .300 this season when he had two strikes on him; Detroit's Placido Polanco hit .350, an extremely high average for that situation.

-- Mike Weir won the PGA Tour event in Arizona this week. He earned $900,000, a pretty good weekend's work.

-- Wouldn't it be good if, instead of having announcers do NFL games, the game were shown along with commentary from the studio, giving audio updates of other NFL games?

-- This way, it would be easier to follow all the action in the league, while following your game on TV via the graphics on the screen. It would be different, but an improvement. In today's TV, so few announcers say anything worthwhile.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

      13) Tennessee kicker Rob Bironas, who once kicked in Arena Football for the Carolina Cobras, booted an NFL-record eight FGs, including the game-winner at the gun. giving Tennessee a wild 39-38 win at Houston, after they blew a 32-7 lead.

      12) Texans scored TD to cut Tennessee lead to 35-29, then recovered an onside kick that was nullified by a penalty. On the re-kick, Houston recovered the ball again, and scored on a long pass play to Andre Davis, as Sage Rosenfels scripted one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history, before eighth field goal by Bironas sent Houston's crowd home unhappy.

      11) With so little separating NFL teams, special teams really make a difference. Tennessee, Tampa Bay and Atlanta all got the ball back via onside kicks Sunday. By 1:15 Sunday, Lions and Cardinals had already blocked punts, though neither got a touchdown out of it. Little thing make a big difference.

      10) Announcer Greg Gumbel grew up a White Sox fan on the south side of Chicago, so you could excuse him calling Miami QB Cleo Lemon "Chet Lemon" (White Sox OF in 70's) once or twice during Sunday's game.

      9) Since the beginning of '06 season, 79% of teams that get a TD via an interception return win that game.

      8) Dallas outgained Vikings 250-78 in first half, ran 43 plays to 18 for Minnesota but trailed 14-7, because they fumbled two times in Viking territory, one of which was run back for a TD. Romo's carelessness with the ball will cost Pokes in January.

      7) Minnesota QB Jackson was hideous; they have chance to make the playoffs, but my guess is Holcomb will have to play QB for that to have realistic shot at happening.

      6) Wade Phillips was out of challenges with 3:44 left in first half; he lost the first challenge, won second. Troy Aikman said the second challenge was worth it, but it is dangerous going half a game without being able to challenge a call.

      5) Baltimore has scored two offensive TDs in their last three games. Wonder who their QB will be next year; my guess is it will be somebody who isn't currently a Raven.

      4) Brian Griese looked like Elway as he led the Bears on great 97-yard drive that ended with a TD pass with 0:09 left-- Bears shocked Eagles 19-16, a very difficult loss for Philly. The field at Lincoln Financial is awful-- that field and the one at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh both need FieldTurf.

      3) If the Giants played Dallas on a neutral field right now, I'd pick the Giants to win. Wonder if the backstabbing creep Tiki Barber still thinks they should fire Coughlin.

      2) Tom Brady is one of the greatest QBs of alltime, but if the Patriots are so freakin' smart, why did they pass on him five times, before finally grabbing him in Round 6 of the draft?

      1) Every team in AFC South is better than every team in the NFC West. I watch the Seahawks' body language, and I see an unhappy, dispirited team, and they won big, 33-6. If the Cardinals could ever finish what they started, they could win that division. The 49ers and Rams are just plain awful. Well, the Rams have to improve before you can call them awful.

              Monday, October 22

Colts (5-0) @ Jaguars (4-1)— Last year, Jax ran ball for 566 yards (191-375) in splitting pair vs Colts, handing Indy 44-17 loss on this field- Jaguars won four in row since opening loss to Texans; they’ve allowed just 37 points in four home games, but Indy steamrolling towards showdown with Patriots- their road wins have been close (22-20/30-24). Jags allowing just 9.8 pg this year; they’ve run ball for 194.7 ypg in last three weeks, and are 28-55 on 3rd down during win streak, so they make plays to keep chains moving, which is critical, if they want to keep ball away from Manning. Four of five Indy games went over the total.

Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars (ESPN | 8:30 PM ET)

The Jaguars bring a four-game winning streak into this Monday Night Football matchup, but none of their wins this season have come over an opponent with a winning record. Still, they are 6-1 straight-up at home on MNF and will look to prove they belong among the best teams in the AFC. "We've been flying under the radar," Jaguars QB David Garrard said. "Now we want a little bit of that national spotlight." SLIGHT EDGE: JAGUARS
Jacksonville's defense has been outstanding this season, as no team has scored more than 17 points against the Jags. They have forced seven turnovers in the last three games and have held their last four opponents under 100 yards rushing. BIG EDGE: JAGUARS
Indy is coming off a bye week and should play this game with a healthy Marvin Harrison (knee), Joseph Addai (shoulder) and Bob Sanders (ribs). All three missed the last game before the bye, with Harrison and Addai sitting out two games to nurse the injuries. EDGE: COLTS
The Colts will be looking for a drastic improvement from their last meeting at Jacksonville after their run defense surrendered 375 yards on the ground in a 44-17 loss last December 10th. The Jaguars are averaging 195.3 yards rushing in their last three games and will pose another difficult task for Indy. EDGE: JAGUARS
The Colts are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games.
The Colts are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Monday Night Football games.
The Jaguars are 7-1-2 ATS in their last 10 home games vs. a winning team.
The Jaguars are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a home underdog.
The OVER is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Jacksonville.

                  Total bias: over/under plays

Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars – over 44 ½

You’ve got to like the way the Jags are moving the ball right now. David Garrard still hasn’t thrown a pick and he hasn’t had a quarterback rating below 102.7 since Week 1. Maurice Jones-Drew is getting back to an elite level and you know he’s looking forward to facing the Colts again.

The last time he saw Indy’s defense he gained 181 yards on just 16 touches.

Meanwhile Peyton Manning gets Marvin Harrison and Joseph Addai back for this AFC South sizzler. I’m expecting some fireworks for Monday night.

                    Monday Night Football Preview

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be looking for a share of the AFC South lead on Monday when they host the division-rival (and unbeaten) Indianapolis Colts at ALLTEL Stadium.

The Jags moved to 4-1 on the season with an easy 37-17 win over the Houston Texans last Sunday. Jacksonville took a slim 10-6 lead into halftime in that contest, but they scored one touchdown in the third quarter and three more in the fourth to secure the win.

Maurice Jones-Drew might not officially be the starting running back in Jacksonville, but he carried the load for the Jags against the Texans. Jones-Drew ran for 125 yards on 12 carries in that contest and scored twice, while also catching four passes for 59 yards. Fred Taylor picked up 90 yards on the ground off six carries. On the season Jones-Drew has 307 rushing yards and three scores, while Taylor has 297 yards and no TDs.

David Garrard completed 22-of-34 pass attempts for 221 yards against Houston, with two touchdown strikes (to George Wrighster and Reggie Williams) and no interceptions. Garrard now boasts a quarterback rating of 104.7, which put him fourth in the league (behind Tom Brady, the injured Jake Delhomme, and Peyton Manning) heading into Week 7 action. Garrard has thrown for 1069 yards and six TDs, with zero interceptions.

The Jaguars are currently on a four-game winning streak; they lost to the Tennessee Titans in Week 1, but since then have reeled off victories over the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, and Texans. To boost that winning streak to five games, though, they'll have to be the first team this season to get the better of the Colts.

Indianapolis had a bye in Week 6, so their most recent outing came at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5. Peyton Manning and company had no trouble getting past the Bucs 33-14 in that contest, despite the fact that they were playing without both Joseph Addai and Marvin Harrison. Those two should be back on Monday.

Manning completed 29-of-37 pass attempts for 253 yards against Tampa Bay, throwing TD strikes to Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne and getting picked off once. Manning has a quarterback rating of 108.6 on the season, and he's thrown for 1319 yards and 10 touchdowns. That interception versus the Buccaneers was only his second of the year.

Kenton Keith filled in nicely for Addai against the Bucs, running for 121 yards on 28 carries and scoring a pair of TDs. Anthony Gonzalez had 71 receiving yards in the win.

The oddsmakers like the Colts' chances of improving to 6-0 on the season on Monday night, as they're pegged as 3-point road favorites. The contest's total is listed at 44.5 points. Indianapolis and Jacksonville split their two games last season - the Jaguars won 44-17 (an OVER) at home in December, and the Colts won 21-14 (an UNDER) at home in September. Both teams were also able to secure the ATS wins in those games.

Here are the official injury reports for both Indianapolis and Jacksonville for Monday …

                    Indianapolis Injuries
Gary Brackett LB Questionable Week 7 (abdomen)
Marvin Harrison WR Questionable Week 7 (knee)
Victor Worsley LB Questionable Week 7 (foot)

                    Jacksonville Injuries

Josh Scobee K Out Week 7 (right quadricep)
Brent Hawkins DE Questionable Week 7 (foot)
Reggie Hayward DE Probable Week 7 (hamstring)
John Henderson DT Probable Week 7 (back)
Maurice Jones-Drew RB Probable Week 7 (thigh)
Paul Spicer DE Probable Week 7 (groin)
Fred Taylor RB Probable Week 7 (groin)

Both the Colts and the Jaguars have road games in Week 8 - Indianapolis will travel to Carolina to play the Panthers, while Jacksonville will stay in-state to battle Tampa Bay.

GAME: Boston Bruins (5-2-0-0) at Montreal Canadiens (3-2-1-1)
                          DATE/TIME: Monday, October 22 - 7:30 PM ET
                          LINE: Canadiens -140 TOTAL: 5 ½

Thanks to some stingy defense, the Boston Bruins are rolling.

They'll be trying for their fifth straight win Monday when they visit the Montreal Canadiens.

The Bruins (5-2-0) beat the New York Rangers 1-0 in a shootout on Saturday. In his first start since Oct. 12, Manny Fernandez stopped 26 shots for his 14th career shutout.

Fernandez, signed as a free agent during the offseason to bolster Boston's goaltending, had allowed a total of 10 goals in his first two starts of the season.

"We definitely know that he's capable of that kind of game, and it's certainly good for his confidence," coach Claude Julien told the Bruins' official team Web site.

Tim Thomas allowed just two goals on 63 shots in Boston's previous two games and owns a 1.26 goals-against average in four contests. The Bruins have allowed two or fewer goals in all but two of their seven games so far this season and are allowing an average of just 2.14 per contest.

Boston has yielded just four power play goals on 28 chances this season and none in 13 chances in its last three games.

"It's great, but actually the guys played well defensively," Fernandez said of his shutout on Saturday. "They were strong handling rebounds and taking them away."

Phil Kessel scored the lone goal in the shootout Saturday for Boston, which had managed 14 goals in its previous three games. The second-year center, who had four shootout winners last season, is tied with three others for the team lead with three goals.

He had two goals and four assists in six games against the Canadiens (3-2-2) last season.

"Right now we are playing pretty good D," Kessel said. "You have to play day in and day out. Hopefully we can get some more wins."

Saturday's game wrapped up a brief two-game homestand for the Bruins, who started the season on a 3-2 road trip. Now, they are heading to Montreal, where they have dropped three straight and seven of eight since the start of the 2005-06 season.

Overall, Boston has dropped 12 of its last 16 games against the Canadiens.

Montreal ended a three-game losing streak on Saturday, beating Buffalo 4-2. Roman Hamrlik had a goal and two assists and was credited with the eventual game-winner when his shot off the end boards went in off defenseman Toni Lydman.

Kyle Chipchura scored his first NHL goal and Bryan Smolinski, playing in his 999th regular-season game, also scored for the Canadiens, who had just five goals during their losing streak."

To be honest, I didn't know what to do with myself, and everything happened so fast," Chipchura told the Canadiens' team site of his first goal. "It just feels good to get it out of the way and help the guys pick up the win tonight."

Cristobal Huet stopped 25 shots and owns a 2.14 GAA in five starts this season. He is 5-2 with a 2.04 GAA in eight career starts against the Bruins.

                          Preview: Sharks at Flames

GAME: San Jose Sharks (4-3-0-1) at Calgary Flames (4-2-1-1)
                          DATE/TIME: Monday, October 22 - 9:00 PM ET

Nineteen-year veteran Jeremy Roenick postponed retirement to join the San Jose Sharks in September. So far, his decision is looking like a smart one.

Roenick looks to continue his hot start while the Sharks go for their first back-to-back wins on Monday against Jarome Iginla and the streaking Calgary Flames.

Roenick contemplated ending his career after disappointing seasons with Los Angeles and Phoenix over the last two years, but the nine-time All-Star felt he had the skills and desire to help the Sharks (4-3-1) contend for the Stanley Cup.

Since signing a one-year, $500,000 contract in the offseason, he's scored three goals in six games. San Jose is 4-1-1 with Roenick on the ice, and 0-2-0 without him.

Roenick missed two of the team's previous three games with a right knee injury before returning Saturday and scoring his third goal in San Jose's 3-0 win over Nashville - the Sharks' first victory in three home games."

I feel really strong," said Roenick, who needed 32 games to reach three goals last season. "The knee didn't hamper me at all. I just have to watch it because I want to make sure and elevate my game."

Roenick's latest tally left him two shy of 500 for his career. Among American-born players, only Dallas' Mike Modano (508) and retired Joey Mullen (502) have more."

I could have had 499 too, but I'll take the one," Roenick said. "The win was more important. We've been struggling at home, and it was good to win here. I want to bring my emotion and I want my energy and excitement for playing to rub off on these guys."

Goalie Evgeni Nabokov stopped 22 shots Saturday for his 35th career shutout and first this season. He has two shutouts against the Flames, against whom he's 9-7-0 with two ties and a 2.25 goals-against average in 19 career games."

We have to keep digging in," Nabokov said. "We can play better. ... Hopefully we can start some streaks now."

The Sharks won three of four games against the Flames last season, but San Jose is just 1-6-0 with one tie in eight trips to Calgary since 2002-03.

Improving at Pengrowth Saddledome could be a challenge against a Calgary team that had the most home victories in the NHL with 30 last season.

The Flames (4-2-2) opened this season 0-2-1, but have ridden Iginla's five-game points streak to a 4-0-1 record since then. Iginla, the team's leading scorer in each of the last six seasons, has five goals and six assists in that stretch.

He scored once and assisted on two other goals in Calgary's 4-1 victory over Edmonton on Saturday. It was his fourth straight game with at least two points - his longest multi-point streak since a five-game run Feb. 28-March 7, 2002. The Flames are averaging 4.4 goals per game since their slow start."

We had a good game as a team," said Iginla, who has four goals and three assists in his last two games against the Sharks. "Right from the start of the game, I thought we were really going."

Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff is 5-4-1 with a 2.59 GAA in 10 career games against the Sharks, but went 1-3-0 with a 3.79 GAA against them last season.

                          Preview: Canucks at Hurricanes

GAME: Vancouver Canucks (4-4-0-0) at Carolina Hurricanes (4-1-2-1)

More than two weeks into their season, the Vancouver Canucks remain perfect on the road. They've been perfect on the road against the Carolina Hurricanes for much longer still.

The Canucks look to open the season with four straight road wins for the first time since 1993-94 on Monday when they visit Carolina, where they haven't lost in nine years.

Vancouver (4-4-0) opened its four-game road trip with a 4-1 victory over Columbus on Sunday. The Canucks, who have outscored their opponents 13-6 in three road games, have not opened a season with four straight road victories since winning their first five away from Vancouver in 1993-94 - also the season of their last Stanley Cup finals appearance.

The Canucks managed to beat the Blue Jackets despite being outshot 14-0 in the second period, as goaltender Curtis Sanford made 35 saves in his first start of 2007-08.

"I don't think we should have won the way we played," said center Ryan Kesler, who scored his first two goals of the season. "It's a funny game that way. They didn't capitalize on some of their opportunities in the second and we capitalized on our few. That was the outcome."

Starting goalie Roberto Luongo, who is 3-4-0 with a 3.15 goals-against average this season, stopped 36 shots in the Canucks' only meeting with Carolina last year, a 4-3 overtime victory for Vancouver at home on Dec. 8.

Daniel Sedin scored the game-winner in that contest, giving him three goals and an assist in five career games versus Carolina.

Vancouver has won its last five meetings with the Hurricanes overall, and has two wins with one tie at Carolina since a 3-1 defeat on Oct. 20, 1998.

Markus Naslund, who scored his third goal of the season Sunday, has two goals and six assists during a six-game point streak against Carolina.

The Hurricanes (4-1-3) open a three-game homestand Monday after wrapping up a six-game road trip in disappointing fashion.

After winning three of the first four games of the trip, Carolina lost to Pittsburgh 4-3 in a shootout Friday, then fell 3-2 in overtime Saturday at Philadelphia.

"It's a terrible way to end it," said Justin Williams, who scored his third goal of the season Saturday. "Back-to-back overtime losses, which make it three on the year, and we've only played eight games. We've got to find ways to win these overtime games."

Williams leads the Hurricanes with 11 points, and has three goals and six assists during a five-game point streak. He has a goal and four assists in four career games against the Canucks.

Center Eric Staal, who added his team-leading sixth goal, has a goal and an assist in two career games against Vancouver.

Carolina goaltender Cam Ward rested against the Flyers after going 4-0-2 with a 1.97 GAA in his first six games of the season. Ward made 21 saves in last year's loss to the Canucks - his only career game against them.

                            Boston at Montreal
The Bruins have won four straight thanks to some solid defense. Even Manny Fernandez, who had given up 10 goals in his first two starts, got into the act on Saturday as he stopped all 26 shots in a 1-0 shootout win over the Rangers. As a team, Boston has allowed just four power play goals on 28 chances this season and none in 13 chances over the last three games. The Bruins have not had much luck in Montreal, where they have dropped three straight and seven of their last eight. But the Canadiens have won just once in their last four games, including back-to-back losses at home to Carolina and Florida, giving the Bruins their best chance in a while. The streaking Bruins look like a good underdog pick (+125) according to Dunkel, which has Boston favored by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: Boston (+125). Here are all of today's games.
