The Buckeyes returned to the top spot in the polls for the first time since last season after sitting there every week except the last one a year ago. They have won 25 straight regular-season games and 16 in a row at home, with the only blemish being a loss to Florida in the BCS title game in January. EDGE: OHIO STATE

#15 Florida at #7 Kentucky (CBS | 3:30 PM ET)

Florida has lost two straight games but has beaten Kentucky 20 straight times. The toughest obstacle the Gators have faced this week is dealing with the loss of walk-on defensive back Michael Guilford, who died last Friday in a motorcycle accident. Also lost in the crash was the girlfriend of freshman cornerback Joe Haden. "It's a terrible tragedy," Florida WR Percy Harvin said. "Our team's really in shock right now. It really hasn't hit us yet. A lot of us will be down. We've just got to lean on each other and lean on our teammates to get us through this tragedy." Insiders expect Florida to carry a heavy heart into Saturday's game and play extra motivated following the losses. EDGE: FLORIDA
Kentucky still feels like it has something to prove despite upsetting the nation's top team a week ago. "Florida's a 7-point favorite and we just beat the No. 1 team in the nation?" Wildcats head coach Brooks said. "How does that equate? It's pretty interesting stuff." Kentucky QB Andre Woodson also was surprised the win over the Tigers didn't impress more people. "It proved we're a team that obviously earns a lot more respect now," Woodson said. "We've come a long way from being a doormat in the SEC to competing with the best teams in the SEC and getting some wins." EDGE: KENTUCKY
The Wildcats will be without leading rusher Rafael Little for the second straight week due to a thigh bruise. Reserves Derrick Locke and Tony Dixon combined for 109 yards last week against LSU in his absence. EDGE: FLORIDA

#12 Cal at UCLA (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

Cal starting QB Nate Longshore could again miss this week's game due to a sprained ankle that also kept him out of last week's home loss to Oregon State. Backup Kevin Riley had a solid game filling in for Longshore with 294 yards passing and two touchdowns, but he failed to get the team a field-goal attempt in the final seconds that could have tied the game. "It hurts," Riley said. "I'm hurting and the team is hurting right now, but we can still win the rest of our games. In this college football season, you don't know what the hell is going to happen." The Golden Bears became the 10th Top 10 team to lose to an unranked team this season. SLIGHT EDGE: UCLA
UCLA has won six straight conference games since losing at Cal last season, 38-24. The Bruins are averaging 43 points in three Pac-10 games this season compared to just 13 point per game against non-conference opponents. They are coming off a bye week following a surprising home loss to previously winless Notre Dame. "We have to get our health back and get ready to play a great Cal football team," UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell said. "We're in pretty good shape in conference. We have to get past this loss and find out how to be better in our conference." SLIGHT EDGE: UCLA
The Bruins may be forced to start a walk-on at QB yet again, as starter Ben Olson and backup Patrick Cowan both are suffering from knee injuries. Cowan's isn't as serious, but if he can't start then McLeod Bethel-Thompson (four interceptions in the loss to Notre Dame) will get the call for the second straight game. BIG EDGE: CAL
Cal is 7-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Cal is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 conference games.
Bruins are 11-4 ATS in its last 15 home games.
Bruins are 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games overall.
Underdog is 4-0-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

#14 USC at Notre Dame (NBC | 3:30 PM ET)

The Fighting Irish are hoping to jump-start the nation's worst offense by inserting junior QB Evan Sharpley into the starting lineup. Sharpley has led Notre Dame to four of its seven offensive touchdowns this season despite limited action. "I think Evan this week gives us the best chance of winning," Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis said. SLIGHT EDGE: NOTRE DAME
USC may have starting QB John David Booty back on the field after he missed last week's win over Arizona with a broken finger. Mark Sanchez made his first career start in Booty's place and threw for just 130 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions against the Wildcats. "It feels good," Booty said of the finger after practice Monday. "I probably will wear a glove on my throwing hand. I'm not trying to do anything amazing. If I can throw effectively, I want to play. It's the coach's decision, not mine." SLIGHT EDGE: USC
USC is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games vs. independents.
USC is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 games as a road favorite.
Notre Dame is 6-14 ATS in its last 20 non-conference games.
Notre Dame is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games as an underdog.
Home team is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.

#24 Texas Tech at #17 Missouri (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

Missouri is coming off a tough 41-31 loss at Oklahoma last week after starting the season 5-0 for the second time in as many years. The Tigers turned the ball over four times and blew a 1-point lead early in the fourth quarter by surrendering 18 straight points. "In big games like this, generally the team that makes the fewest mistakes is going to win, and that's what happened," Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel said. "With games of this magnitude, mistakes are generally going to dictate how the game is going to come out." Insiders expect the Tigers to bounce back at home, where they dominated Nebraska 41-6 the last time they played there. Pinkel is 6-0 SU & 5-0 ATS in the game following the team's first loss of the season. EDGE: MISSOURI
The Red Raiders have dominated opponents since suffering a 49-45 loss at Oklahoma State, winning three straight by a combined score of 152-31. They rank first in the country in total offense with 582 yards per game and third in scoring with 50 points per game. Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell leads the nation in passing with 450.1 yards per game to go along with 31 touchdown passes. EDGE: TEXAS TECH
Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree was held without a TD last week for the first time this season but still made eight catches for 170 yards in a 35-7 win over Texas A&M. The freshman leads the country in both catches (78) and yards (1,244). "It wasn't even frustrating not getting into the end zone," Crabtree said. "I was just doing my job. If they would have called me for the end zone, I would have probably scored. Everybody else got their share, we just played good." EDGE: TEXAS TECH
Texas Tech is 3-8 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Texas Tech is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 games as a small road underdog.
Missouri is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games as a favorite.
Missouri is 7-0 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The OVER is 8-2 in Texas Tech’s last 10 games following a SU win.

Miami at Florida State (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

Both of these teams are coming off very disappointing losses that they had hoped would send their seasons in a more positive direction. The Hurricanes seem to be in the worse spot right now, as another loss would even their record at 4-4 and put them in serious jeopardy of missing a bowl game for the second straight season. Meanwhile, the Seminoles had won four in a row before losing at Wake Forest and could essentially guarantee another bowl appearance with a victory. SLIGHT EDGE: FLORIDA STATE
Miami is 3-9 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Miami is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 road games.
Florida State is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 games as a favorite.
Florida State is 0-4 in its last 4 conference games.
The UNDER is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings.

#13 Kansas at Colorado (ESPN | 5:30 PM ET)

The Jayhawks remain one of six unbeaten teams and are off to their best start in 12 years. However, they have lost in their last five visits to Boulder and have not earned two straight wins vs. Colorado since 1980-81. SLIGHT EDGE: COLORADO
Kansas QB Todd Reesing made his collegiate debut against the Buffaloes last season off the bench, throwing for two touchdowns and running for another in a 20-15 victory. Reesing has thrown a TD pass in six straight games and can set a school record with one more. EDGE: KANSAS
Kansas is 6-0 ATS in its last 6 games as a favorite.
Kansas is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games as a road favorite.
Colorado is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 home games.
Colorado is 4-10 in its last 14 conference games.
The OVER is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

                #19 Virginia at Maryland (ESPN2 | 8 PM ET)

The Cavaliers have won six straight games since suffering a 23-3 loss at Wyoming to open the season. However, their last two road games have been decided by just four points total, and they have won their last two overall by just three, failing to cover each time. EDGE: MARYLAND
Maryland is coming off a bye week after upsetting Georgia Tech 28-26 as a 3-point home underdog. That followed a huge upset at Rutgers as a 17-point dog, and the Terps have not been favored in a game since winning at Florida International 26-10 in the second week of the season. They failed to cover that game as a 23-point road favorite. SLIGHT EDGE: VIRGINIA
Virginia is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 conference games.
Virginia is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 road games.
Maryland is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 conference games.
Maryland is 1-7 ATS in its last 8 games as a home favorite.
Virginia is 0-4 ATS in the last 4 meetings at Maryland.

#25 Michigan at Illinois (ABC | 8 PM ET)

Michigan has won five straight vs. Illinois and will be going for its 10th straight victory on the road in this series. The Wolverines will also be going for their sixth win in a row overall after starting out the season 0-2. "The things that are important are that we improve, continue to improve this week," Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr said. "Because certainly there are some things that we didn't do well, and certainly some things that we need to do better." EDGE: MICHIGAN
Illinois might get a break if All-American RB Mike Hart doesn't suit up for the Wolverines. Hart played the first half of last week's 48-21 rout of Purdue, rushing for 102 yards and two touchdowns before leaving with a sprained ankle. Hart's backup Brandon Minor also limped off the field in that game with an ankle injury, although tackle Jake Long believes Hart will play. "There's no doubt in my mind he'll play," Long said. SLIGHT EDGE: ILLINOIS
Michigan is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 games vs. a wining team.
Michigan is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 road games.
Illinois is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games as an underdog.
Illinois is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

#17 Auburn at #4 LSU (ESPN | 9 PM ET)

Despite last week's triple-overtime loss at Kentucky, LSU remains confident that winning out will still put the team in excellent position to compete for the national championship. "We appreciate that position and understand that it puts us in a good position for the future, but we are paying little attention to it," LSU coach Les Miles said. "What we have to do is be our best football team and prepare to play a quality opponent. There is no time to hang your head." EDGE: LSU
LSU has won 17 straight home games, and the home team has won the last seven in this series with Auburn. The winner has also gone on to play in the SEC title game five of seven times during that stretch. The last three meetings have been decided by a total of eight points. SLIGHT EDGE: LSU
Auburn is 6-0 ATS in its last 6 games as an underdog.
Auburn is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games vs. a winning team.
LSU is 7-0 ATS in its last 7 games following a SU loss.
LSU 0-4 ATS in its last 4 games as a favorite.
The UNDER is 7-0 in the last 7 meetings.

                    College Football Gameday

Three big Top 25 matchups highlight the Saturday college football schedule as No. 22 Texas Tech visits No. 15 Missouri, No. 14 Florida battles No. 8 Kentucky and No. 18 Auburn faces No. 5 LSU.

Texas Tech (22) at Missouri (15)

The Red Raiders romped over Texas A&M 35-7 as a 10-point favorite last week. Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell had a monster game, completing 30-of-37 passes for 425 yards with three touchdown passes and he also ran in for a score. Running back Shannon Woods rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, while Michael Crabtree led all receivers with eight receptions for 170 yards. The Red Raiders put up 535 total yards of offense in the rout.

The Tigers are coming off their first loss of the season after falling to Oklahoma 41-31 as a 13-point underdog last week. Quarterback Chase Daniel threw for 361 yards on 37-of-47 passing, but only had one touchdown to two interceptions. Wideout Jeremy Maclin was a double threat, as he caught five passes for 53 yards and also rushed for 32 yards and two touchdowns on four carries.

Last season the Tigers toppled the Red Raiders 38-21 as a 7-point road underdog. The Tigers are a 3.5-point favorite in Saturday’s game.

                    Florida (14) at Kentucky (8)

The Gators went into their break last week riding a two-game losing streak. Back on September 29 Florida suffered an upset loss to Auburn, 20-17 as a 17.5-point favorite, while a week later they succumbed to LSU, 28-24 as an 8-point underdog. Against the Tigers, Florida QB Tim Tebow completed 12-of-26 passes for 158 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, and also rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

The Wildcats became the first team to beat LSU this season after downing the Tigers 43-37 in triple overtime as a 10-point underdog last week. Andre Woodson led the offense while completing 21-of-38 passes for 250 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Woodson also ran in for a touchdown, as did running back Derrick Locke who rushed for 64 yards on 20 carries. Receiver Steve Johnson was Woodson’s go-to guy in the win with seven receptions for 134 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

The Gators knocked off the Wildcats 26-7 as a 27.5-point favorite when they met up last season, marking Florida’s 12th win a row versus Kentucky. The Gators enter Saturday’s game as a 6.5-point road favorite.

                    Auburn (18) at LSU (5)

Auburn edged Arkansas 9-7 in a tight defensive battle last week after kicker Wes Byrum knocked home the game-winning field goal from 20 yards out with 21 seconds remaining. The Tigers were a 3-point underdog in the game. Quarterback Brandon Cox had a forgettable day, completing just 13-of-23 passes for 101 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Most of Auburn's offensive yards came on the ground, as Ben Tate racked up 91 yards on 23 carries and Brad Lester rushed for 89 yards on 21 carries. The Auburn defense limited Arkansas to 193 yards of offense, and that included holding Heisman candidate Darren McFadden to only 43 rushing yards.

LSU suffered their first loss of the season last week, as they were dropped by Kentucky, 43-37 in triple overtime as a 10-point favorite. Tigers’ QB Matt Flynn completed only 17-of-35 passes for 130 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while running back Charles Scott ran in for a pair of touchdowns. The LSU defense gave up 375 yards to Kentucky, which is the most they have allowed in a game this season. The Tigers’ big D may be losing some of its bite after giving up 67 points combined in their last two games. In the Tigers’ first five games they only allowed 32 points.

When Auburn and LSU squared off last season it was a low-scoring affair, which Auburn won 7-3 as a 3.5-point underdog. LSU is a 10-point favorite in the rematch.

                          Week 17 CFL games

I get a kick out of the CFL schedule; once again, teams that played each other last week meet again, this time at the other team's stadium. Interesting way of scheduling.

                          Saturday, October 19

Toronto (8-7) @ Montreal (7-8) -- Argos beat Als 35-17 a week ago at Rogers Centre, their fourth win in row and sixth in last seven weeks; they lost twice to Montreal in Weeks 5-6 (26-13 at home, 29-27 OT here). Alouettes lost four of last five games (0-5 vs spread) but they've won five of last six at home. Under is 5-2 in Toronto road games, 5-0 in last five at Montreal.

Edmonton (5-9-1) @ BCLions (11-3-1) -- Eskimos' 24-18 loss to Lions last week was their third in row, sixth in last eight games they lost 29-9 here back in Week 2 (+6). BC won five in a row; they covered last three home games, winning by 46-14/40-7 and 42-9 scores. Last four Edmonton games stayed under the total, as did five of last six British Columbia games.

                          Sunday, October 21

Hamilton (2-13) @ Saskatchewan (9-6) -- Riders' 40-23 win last week in Hamilton was their third in row; they've scored 35 ppg in last four weeks, but are just vs spread as home fave in their last six at Taylor Field. TiCats covered three of last four; they are 4-4 as road dog, with away losses by 28-4-18-2-18-13-2-8 points. Four of last five Hamilton games stayed under total.

                            Toronto Argonauts at Montreal Alouettes (-1 ½, 50 ½)
                            Saturday, Oct. 20, 3 p.m. ET

Toronto continues climb the standings and cover the spread no matter its opponents. The Boatmen getting points against Montreal is nearly an automatic play this weekend, but two factors make me hesitate.

The first is that the Alouettes are abandoning Molson Stadium for the mausoleum known as the Big ‘O’ this weekend. A crowd of 40,000 is expected for Saturday's game, so the Als will have twice the fans but one-eighth the atmosphere of their normal home games. For some reason, however, the Argos don't have a great recent record when playing at Olympic Stadium.

The second is the Argonauts' signing of retired fullback / current actor Sean Millington. My God, what's behind this move? He's 39, hasn't played in two years and tore his Achilles tendon in his most recent comeback attempt. Millington hasn't held back from criticizing current CFLers in his TV gig, either. Will he be a target for players holding a grudge? How do the other Argos feel about the move?

All the same, it's near-impossible to fade Toronto right now. Its passing game is at its healthiest point of the season, its defense remains outstanding and besides, who am I to go against the hottest team in the league?

                            Pick: Argonauts +1 ½

                            Edmonton Eskimos at BC Lions (-13 ½, 48 1/2)
                            Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 p.m. ET

Edmonton played its desperation card this week by signing former Ticats safety Rob Hitchcock. Rumor has it the Esks would have raided Hamilton’s past for Angelo Mosca and Rocky DiPietro as well, but the pair of Hall of Famers failed their physicals.

Once again the oddsmakers have made it hard to back the Lions, even at home. BC hasn’t officially clinched the West yet, but the Leos don’t have a lot to play for at the moment. It showed last Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium when they were fortunate to escape with a win.

The Eskimos waited on the run and negated Joe Smith's ability to move the sticks and kill the clock. In essence, Edmonton dared BC quarterback Jarious Jackson to win the game and that's just what he did. Barely.

BC should look to reestablish its running game before the postseason. If the Lions get an early lead on Saturday that's just what they'll do. Edmonton, in the meantime, counters once again with Stefan LeFors at quarterback. He's mobile and talented but also a turnover waiting to happen against BC's ball-hawking defenders at home.

                            Pick: Under 48 ½

                            Sunday, October 21

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Saskatchewan Roughriders (OTB)
                            Sunday, Oct. 21, 3 p.m. ET

Hamilton put up a good fight for most of last Sunday’s game before things with Saskatchewan turned into a good fight of another variety. The Riders had more players ejected but walked away a winner in an emotional battle.

Ignoring the second-half shenanigans for a moment, Saskatchewan won with an overpoweringly balanced offensive attack. Kerry Joseph opened the game with repeated bombs to Andy Fantuz, and the pair's success opened up the middle for Wes Cates and Joseph to later exploit.

The Riders' onslaught prompted Hamilton to completely rearrange its secondary for this Sunday's rematch in Regina, never a good sign against a more talented team. The fact that cornerback Dwight Anderson was removed from the team after a disastrous outing last weekend doesn't help.

The line for this game was delayed due to questions over Casey Printers' wrenched back. But has Hamilton's offense been any better with him under center than Richie Anderson? Saskatchewan can clinch a postseason home game this weekend and will play with a bit of hate after the scuffles at Ivor Wynne Stadium. But with the spread likely to reach double digits against the CFL's whipping boys, I feel better taking the under on a cold and windy day in Regina.

                            Pick: Under

                            Last week: 3-1

                              San Francisco at NY Giants
The Giants have put together four straight wins after opening 0-2. Monday night's 31-10 win over Atlanta saw the New York offense rack up 491 yards -- their most since 2003 -- with Eli Manning throwing for 303 yards and 2 TDs. The running game has put together back-to-back games with 188 yards and 2 TDs. But as good as the offense has been, the defense has been better, allowing just 20 points over the last 14 quarters. San Francisco is heading in the opposite direction. After averaging 18.5 points in winning their first two games of the season, the 49ers have scored just 26 points while dropping their last three. Trent Dilfer has had a tough time filling in for the injured Alex Smith at QB and RB Frank Gore has yet to break the 100-yard mark after topping it nine times last year. Going up against a defense on top of its game, the 49ers struggles should continue and makes the Giants a good pick (-9) to cover according to Dunkel, which has New York favored by 16. Dunkel Pick: NY Giants (-9). Here are all of this week's picks.
