    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Nebraska’s AD getting fired means Bill Callahan can pack his bags too. What direction do Huskers go for next? Back to the running game, or another passing coach?

-- During Colorado's amazing 21-1 run, 13 different Rockies have driven in go-ahead run, an amazing stat for a 22-game period, and a 25-man roster, 12 of whom are pitchers.

-- Colorado doesn’t make playoffs unless Cook and Hirsh, two starting pitchers, get hurt this summer. Both Morales, Jimenez came up from minors and have been better pitchers.

-- Attendance in major leagues went up another 4.5% this season, proving that no matter how much I rattle on about competitive balance, average Joe could care less, as long as the beer at the ballpark is still cold in the sixth inning.

-- Vinny Testaverde signed with Carolina last Wednesday, but only after reneging on a deal with Arizona Tuesday; those are same Cardinals Testaverde helped beat Sunday.

-- Grant Hill looks weird in a Phoenix Suns’ uniform.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13............

If you don’t have at least a .500 record, you can’t get ranked.

      13) Chiefs— No one thought they’d be anywhere close to first place at this point; playing better defense, and Huard is managing game well.

      12) Titans—Need Vince Young to be healthy; playing solid defense, but could have used that win in Tampa Sunday. If Kerry Collins was your backup, you'd want your starter to be healthy, too.

      11) Ravens—Played against Dilfer, Frerotte last two weeks, get rookie Edwards this week; at some point, a real QB might expose some weaknesses. Scored one TD in last two games.

      10) Browns—Derek Anderson is free agent after season; if this continues, can Cleveland afford to let him walk? Um, no.

      9) Packers—Playing good defense, but question will be how long Favre can resist throwing a couple up for grabs in big spot? Rookie kicker struggled in rain Sunday.

      8) Redskins—Were shut out in second half of both losses, with play calls on offense raising eyebrows in both games. They’re done good job developing Campbell as a QB.

      7) Chargers—Now that they’re .500, can put them on list; just beat pair of division foes 41-3/28-14. Would like to see little more poise out of QB Rivers, but I forget he has made only 20 NFL starts.

      6) Giants—Won last four games, look like threat to Dallas in NFC East; Burress is one of two best WRs in NFL this year.

      5) Jaguars—Also won last four games; have the dominating defense, depth at RB. Big game on Monday night this week, hosting Colts. Spread is only 3, so Jags have respect.

      4) Cowboys—Best team in NFC right now, but gap is closing; how will they stop Viking running game that had 311 yards in Chicago Sunday?

      3) Steelers—AFC playoff race is going to be dogfight; with Colts, Patriots both unbeaten, Steelers are looking like #3.

      2) Patriots—Haven’t scored less than 34 points this season. Have to guard against complacency with 4.5 game division lead. They find ways to get themselves motivated.

      1) Colts- Defending champs are king of hill until they lose.

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets

Dallas Stars at Columbus Blue Jackets (+103, 5)

The Stars could still be without starting goalie Marty Turco tonight because of his sore leg. With Turco ailing and backup Mike Smith on the IR, Dallas will be forced to use third-stringer Tobias Stephan. Stephan made his NHL debut in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Blackhawks on Sunday.

If in nets, he'll face a Blue Jackets squad that looks improved from past seasons. Columbus is 2-2 this season and has won four of its last five against Dallas.

                      Pick: Columbus +103

New Jersey Devils at Pittsburgh Penguins (-152, 6)

Both teams' starting goalies have struggled this season. Martin Brodeur hasn’t been his usual self so far this year, going 1-3 with an ugly 3.26 GAA in four games. At the other end of the ice, Marc-Andre Fleury has had his share of struggles as well. Fleury is 2-2 while allowing at least three goals in each game. Both teams are coming off victories in which they each scored six goals.

                      Pick: Over 6

St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks (-130, 5)

The Blues have reeled off three straight wins by a combined score of 13-4 after dropping their first game of the year. St. Louis has struggled against Chicago in the past, however, losing seven of its last 10 games against the Hawks.

The game could come down to a battle of goaltenders with the Blues' Manny Legace facing off against the Blackhawks' Nikolai Khabibulin.

                      Pick: Blues +120

                        Wednesday October 17
St. Louis at Chicago (8:30 p.m. EDT). The Blackhawks (3-2) have come from behind in each of their wins this season and will try to move two games over .500 for the first time since last Oct. 18.

                        STARS
                        Monday

-Ales Kotalik, Sabres, scored an unassisted power-play goal with 4 seconds left in overtime and Buffalo rallied for a 5-4 win over Toronto.

-Samuel Pahlsson, Ducks, scored a tiebreaking short-handed goal with 10:58 left in the third period to lead Anaheim to a 6-3 victory over Detroit.

                        WAIVING GOODBYE

Jesse Boulerice, who last week was given the longest single-season suspension in NHL history for hitting a player in the face with his stick, was placed on waivers by Philadelphia on Monday. The 29-year-old Boulerice was suspended 25 games by the league for cross-checking Vancouver's Ryan Kesler in the face on Wednesday. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said the decision was based on the team's need for more roster space while dealing with injuries.

                        BLOWING LEAFS

Toronto blew a two-goal lead for the second straight game on Monday night, allowing four third-period goals and another in overtime for a 5-4 loss at Buffalo. The Maple Leafs were up by two Saturday before Pittsburgh stormed back for a 6-4 win.

                        QUICK BITES

Joe Pavelski, Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo scored in a 3:20 span early in the third period to break open a tie game and lift San Jose to a 4-2 victory at Vancouver on Monday night.

                        FIRST

Kent Huskins notched his first NHL goal on Monday night, the opening tally in Anaheim's 6-3 win over Detroit on Monday night.

                        SITTING DUCK

Anaheim right winger Todd Bertuzzi was placed on the injured list Monday because of a concussion sustained a night earlier against Minnesota. He is expected to be out at least a week.

                        PLAYING WITH PAIN

Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik sustained a concussion while being leveled during Saturday's game in Toronto but is expected to play Wednesday against New Jersey.

                        FINAL CHOICE

The NHL Players' Association officially nominated former assistant U.S. attorney Paul Kelly on Monday for its executive director position. The five-player search committee interviewed a long list of candidates before narrowing it to three. NFL Players Association lawyer Richard Berthelsen, and Bill Gregson, president and CEO of sports store chain Forzani Group, were the other finalists with Kelly.

                        SPEAKING

''It doesn't feel too good right now. We don't have a lot of confidence in our defensive game right now, and it showed. We sat back, and that's the kiss of death especially against a team that can wind up like that.'' - Toronto coach Paul Maurice after the Maple Leafs allowed four third-period goals and another in overtime for a 5-4 loss at Buffalo on Monday night. It was the second straight game that Toronto blew a two-goal lead.

                            St. Louis at Chicago
Chicago is off to a surprising start as the Blackhawks picked up back-to-back victories over Dallas and Detroit. They'll be looking for their first three-game winning streak since 2002. But as good as the Blackhawks have been, St. Louis has been a little better. The Blues have won three straight while outscoring the opposition 13-5. Paul Kariya has led the way for his new team with six assists and has had success against Chicago in his career (25 goals, 35 assists in 53 games). The Blues look like a good underdog pick (+120) in this one according to Dunkel, which has St. Louis favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: St. Louis (+120). Here are all of today's games.
