Tuesday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13.....

This list isn’t a ranking, except the #1 team will be the team we think should be their in the "real" polls. Teams get posted here, based on things that happen from week-to-week…….

      13) Hawai’i—They were down 14 on road with 4:00 left at San Jose, won in OT. Gutty win, but beating San Jose in OT isn’t very impressive. Still unbeaten, though.

      12) Kansas—This is a good team, but because they employ Bill Snyder scheduling tactics, its still hard to tell how good. We’re about to find out.

      11) Virginia—Won six games in row, with four of last five wins by five or less points. Howie Long’s son will play on Sundays.

      10) Texas Tech— Texas A&M has now lost seven in row in Lubbock by 17-point average. Harrell needs consideration for Heisman-- he's really good.

      9) Arizona State—Trailed 14-0 vs Colorado, 19-0 vs Oregon State, and at half vs Washngton; at some point, this will catch up with them, probably on the road.

      8) Northwestern—After horrible home loss to Duke last month, Wildcats have now won consecutive overtime games. Need two more wins to go bowling.

      7) Wake Forest—Beat Florida State for second year in row. How good were Deacons before Grobe got there? They used to sell their home games vs. Seminoles, play them in Orlando.

      6) Alabama—Every game they play winds up close, even when they led Houston 23-0 at half. Their win at Ole Miss is better win than most people think.

      5) Kentucky—Who made their schedule? LSU and Florida in Lexington in consecutive weeks? Wow.

      4) Boston College—Not sure how good they are, but I’m sure they haven’t lost yet.

      3) Ohio State—Al Davis’ favorite team; just win, baby, but it will be interesting when schedule toughens up.

      2) South Florida—This program is going to be the beast of the Big East, a huge school in a football hotbed. This is their first taste of the bigtime.

      1) LSU—Losing at Kentucky is no disgrace; if Ohio State played in the SEC, they’d have at least one loss, maybe more. Still think Tigers are the best team.

        Latenight update from NLCS

-- At 1:39 am here in the east, Colorado Rockies won the NL title for the first time, beating Arizona 6-4 and sweeping the series 4-0, as they continue the greatest postseason run in the history of baseball.

-- Rockies are now a freakin' unbelievable 21-1 in their last 22 games, 7-0 in postseason, and will have eight days off before they begin the World Series on the 24th, in the AL city.

-- Big night for Ole Miss; Eli Manning looked super in Giants' win at Atlanta; his college backup, Seth Smith, had pinch hit to put the Rockies ahead for good in 4th inning, so big night for the Rebels, in two different sports.

-- Not so good for WTBS; they televised five playoff series, and four were sweeps. Their first venture into the postseason was not a good one, although I liked most of the announcers they used (Chip Caray being the notable exception).

-- Is Ernie Johnson the coolest guy on TV, or what? He made the trophy presentation fun to watch, asking good questions and bringing out the positive emotions of the Rockies.

-- No more promos for Frank TV!!!!!!!

-- It snows in Denver in October, so baseball runs the risk of having multiple postponements in World Series; having the start date locked in at October 24 is a decision FOX made.

-- What do the Rockies do for eight days? Go to their spring training complex in Arizona? (How weird would that be, after sweeping the Diamondbacks?). The weather isn't going to be great in Denver probably, and they need to stay sharp.

-- This is the sixth straight year a Wild Card team has gotten into the World Series.

-- Maybe the eastern-obsessed national media will stop with Joe Torre and ARod for a while and recognize that what the Rockies are doing is the greatest postseason run in baseball history, maybe in history of all of pro sports.

-- Good for the Rockies. Enjoy the ride, fellas.

          League Championship Series

Byrd pitched clincher in New York, now can give Indians huge lead in this series; he beat Red Sox 6-2 in Fenway May 30, as Sox got two runs in six innings against him. Wakefield was 1-2, 9.12 in his last five starts; he wasn't on roster for the Anaheim series because he has bad back and some other medical issues- he didn't face Indians this season. Over is 10-5-1 in last sixteen Byrd starts. Trive is 7-3 in his last ten starts.

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians (FOX | 8:21 PM ET)

The Red Sox will send knuckleballer Tim Wakefield to the mound for the first time this postseason after he was held out of the ALDS due to a back injury. Wakefield is 5-4 with a 4.82 ERA in 10 career starts at Jacobs Field, but he is a perfect 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA in four career ALCS starts ."I think when you get to this time of year, you have a great deal of challenges when it comes to the opposition, or they wouldn't be here," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "Surely a knuckleball pitcher takes it to the extreme. It's not something you see very much of anymore." SLIGHT EDGE: RED SOX
Cleveland's Paul Byrd is 4-2 lifetime vs. Boston with a 4.12 ERA and beat the Red Sox back on May 30th at Fenway Park, allowing two runs in six innings of an 8-4 victory. Boston slugger Manny Ramirez is just 2-for-14 during his career against Byrd. EDGE: INDIANS
Cleveland's bullpen has pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings in the last two games of the ALCS. EDGE: INDIANS
Boston is 9-4 in its last 13 meetings at Cleveland.
Cleveland is 18-4 in its last 22 home games, including 3-0 in the playoffs..
Cleveland is 9-3 in its last 12 games as an underdog.

BoSox, Tribe set for Game 4

The Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians will meet at Jacobs Field again on Tuesday night in the critical Game 4 of their American League Championship Series.

And the Tribe will carry a 2-1 series lead into that contest, after they managed to take care of business at home in Game 3 on Monday night. Indians starter Jake Westbrook was pegged as the underdog by the books versus Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka, but the veteran righthander outduelled his rookie counterpart to lead his team to a 4-2 victory.

Westbrook went 6 2-3 innings for Cleveland on Monday night, surrendering just two earned runs on seven hits and three walks, while fanning two Boston batters. Indians stopper Joe Borowski pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the game for his squad. Dice-K lasted just 4 2-3 innings in his start for Boston, giving up four earned runs on six hits and two walks, and striking out six batters. The BoSox bullpen blanked the Indians over the final three innings of the game, but the team's hitters couldn't come through.

Kenny Lofton was the offensive star for Cleveland; the veteran outfielder blasted a two-run shot in the second inning off Matsuzaka to give his team the early lead. Asdrubal Cabrera and Travis Hafner drove in the Tribe's other two runs in a fifth-inning rally. Ryan Garko, Grady Sizemore, and Casey Blake all scored runs for Cleveland in the victory.

Boston scored both of their runs in the seventh inning when Jason Varitek hit a two-run shot off Westbrook, scoring J.D. Drew. Seven different Red Sox hitters picked up a single hit in the contest, but none of them managed to have a multi-hit game. Boston will be looking to have a better offensive outing when they take the field on Tuesday night.

The Red Sox had considered using Josh Beckett on short rest in Game 4, but manager Terry Francona said Monday that he'll use knuckleballer Tim Wakefield instead. The righthander was left off Boston's ALDS roster because of a sore back, but he reportedly was fine after throwing a simulated game last week. Wakefield went 17-12 during the season with a 4.76 ERA, and he managed to fan 110 batters in his 189 innings pitched.

The Indians will counter Wakefield with Paul Byrd, who picked up the win in the series-clincher versus the New York Yankees last round. Byrd lasted five innings in that outing, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and striking out two New York batters. During the season the righthander went 15-8 with a 4.59 ERA, fanning 88 over 192 1-3 innings.

The oddsmakers opened the Indians as slight -115 home favorites for Game 4 late on Monday night, with the Red Sox listed as +105 underdogs. The total was pegged at 10 runs.

Here is the schedule for the rest of the Red Sox/Indians series (with times tentative) . . .

              American League Championship Series Schedule

              Game 4 --- Tuesday, October 16 --- 8 p.m. ET (Jacobs Field)
              Game 5 --- Thursday, October 18 --- 8 p.m. ET (Jacobs Field)
              Game 6 --- Saturday, October 20 --- 4 p.m. ET (Fenway Park)
              Game 7 --- Sunday, October 21 --- 8 p.m. ET (Fenway Park)

The ALCS winners will take on the Colorado Rockies (NL champs) in the World Series starting October 24.

Indians, Red Sox to use off-speed pitchers in Game 4

CLEVELAND -- Fastball is a poor name for the pitch when Paul Byrd throws it.

Compare it with the speed of Tim Wakefield's knuckleball, though, and it's positively blazing.

So when those two starters square off in Game 4 of the AL championship series Tuesday night, patience will be a priority for Indians and Red Sox hitters.

''This may be the slowest-throwing right-handed matchup of all time in the postseason,'' Byrd said Monday before Game 3.

Byrd's fastest pitch barely flirts with the 90 mph mark. Wakefield sometimes throws a dipping, darting pitch that can't break 70 or a pane of glass.

Compare that with the Game 1 power pitchers, Boston's Josh Beckett and Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia, and it might be difficult to believe all four fill the same role.

Wakefield can even give his own manager problems with his fickle flutterball that can be all over the place for a stretch and then close enough to the plate for batters to take a swat at it.

''He's the hardest guy to be a manager for of any pitcher I've ever been around,'' Boston's Terry Francona said. ''I think I learned real quick, sometimes to take both your hands, put them underneath you and sit there. Because of the way he pitches, if you don't do that, it can drive you crazy a little bit.

''At the same time, if you're patient enough to let him pitch, and he's pitching well, he won 17 games.''

Wakefield might have won more if he hadn't missed time with a back injury late in the season - the same problem that forced the Red Sox to leave him off the roster for their division series sweep of the Los Angeles Angels.

''I probably wouldn't have been any help to us in the ALDS and it didn't make any sense to try to fit a square peg into a round hole,'' Wakefield said.

Now he's eager to participate after throwing 77 pitches in a simulated game last week.

''The rest has done me well,'' he said. ''I'm ready to go.''

Wakefield was 17-12 with a 4.76 ERA this season. Byrd was 15-8 with a 4.59 ERA. Each started 31 games.

And each was the subject of speculation about whether they'd even get to start in the playoffs.

Cleveland manager Eric Wedge was questioned when he used Byrd rather than Sabathia on three days' rest in Game 4 of the AL division series. Byrd pitched five solid innings and the Indians beat the New York Yankees 6-4 to clinch the series.

''You know what you're going to get from Paul. He knows himself very well,'' Wedge said. ''He's pitched in a lot of big ballgames.''

Francona made it clear that he would use Wakefield in Game 4, instead of postseason star Beckett, even if the Red Sox trail 2-1 in the series. The main reason, he said, is how the short rest would affect Beckett.

The right-hander did pitch the clinching game of the 2003 World Series for Florida over the Yankees on three days' rest, but Francona said he's a different pitcher now.

Byrd is different than when he pitched for Francona in Philadelphia from 1998-2000.

He's certainly different than Indians fastballers Sabathia and Fausto Carmona, who pitched the first two games of the series.

''It comes down to the same thing. Swinging at strikes, getting balls up in the zone that you can do something with and lay off everything else,'' Francona said.

When Byrd ''is getting himself into hot water ... he's great at getting himself out of it,'' Francona said, ''because as the stadium gets louder, he has the ability to go softer, and that can be very effective.''

                Not as soft as Wakefield.

''Surely, a knuckleballer takes it to the extreme,'' Wedge said. ''But you go up there and you've got some people with experience with it.''

The Indians will have to go from hard-throwing Daisuke Matsuzaka in Game 3 to Wakefield. The Red Sox will have a smoother transition with sinkerballer Jake Westbrook, who throws harder than Byrd, on the mound Monday.

Byrd wasn't spectacular in the division series, allowing two runs, eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five-plus innings.

                But he was good enough.

''That's the way my career has gone, has just been trying to grind it out with less-than-average stuff and make something out of not too much,'' Byrd said.

                    Boston at Cleveland
Tim Wakefield missed the ALDS because of a bad back and now has to try to bail the Red Sox out of a 2-1 hole in Cleveland. While Wakefield has been a reliable pitcher in the postseason in the past (4-0, 2.61 in 4 LCS starts), the knuckleballer hasn't pitched since September 29. Prior to that, Wakefield wasn't exactly effective as he gave up 24 earned runs in 24 2/3 innings during the month. With Boston's bats suddenly going quiet (Ramirez and Ortiz had just two hits and no runs last night), the Indians look primed to take Game Four tonight. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (-114). SCOREBOARD
                      Monday, Oct. 15

Toronto at Buffalo (7 p.m. EDT)

The Sabres have 13 goals in their last two games and 19 in four contests this season.

                      STARS Sunday

-Henrik Zetterberg, Red Wings, had a goal and two assists and Detroit beat Los Angeles 4-1.

-Josh Harding, Wild, posted his third career shutout with a career-high 37 saves, leading Minnesota to a 2-0 victory over Anaheim.

                      SLUMPING

Detroit beat Los Angeles 4-1 on Sunday night, sending the Kings to their fifth consecutive loss. They have just one win so far, beating the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks in the season-opener in London. The Kings' start is their worst since they were 1-6-0 to open the 1987-88 season, including five consecutive defeats.

                      WILD START

Josh Harding posted his third career shutout with a career-high 37 saves Sunday night, leading the unbeaten Wild to a 2-0 victory over the defending champion Ducks. Minnesota's 5-0 start leaves the Wild as the NHL's only team without a loss, and puts them one victory away from matching last season's squad for the franchise's best winning streak from the start of a season.

                      SPEAKING

''I don't want to make too much of this win, but they're the Stanley Cup champions. So we'll keep that in mind and we'll try to keep getting better. It was a chippy game and a hard-fought game. It was like a playoff hockey game.'' - Minnesota's Brian Rolston after helping the Wild to a 2-0 victory over Anaheim on Sunday. The Ducks knocked the Wild out of the playoffs last season and went on to win their first Stanley Cup title.

He had 43 goals and a career-high 100 points for Atlanta last season. The Thrashers, the league's only winless team, will try to put an end that distinction when they take on the Flyers at the Wachovia Center.

Olli Jokinen and the Panthers look to even their record with their third straight win tonight when they visit the Montreal Canadiens.

Calgary Flames at Colorado Avalanche (-140, 5 1/2)

The Avalanche are 3-0-0 at the Pepsi Center, but the Flames come to Denver after winning back-to-back games over the weekend including a 7-4 win at home vs. Nashville.

Minnesota Wild at Los Angeles Kings (138, 5 1/2)

The Minnesota Wild look to match the best start in franchise history and continue their recent dominance of the Kings when the teams meet at Staples Center tonight.

Marian Hossa missed his third straight game with a groin injury Saturday, but hopes to return against the Flyers. He had 43 goals and a career-high 100 points for Atlanta last season. The Thrashers are the league's only winless team and will try to put an end to that distinction when they take on the Flyers at the Wachovia Center. The Thrashers are 0-9 in their last nine games against the Eastern Conference and 0-6 in their last six versus the Atlantic Division.

                          Pick: Flyers -180

Florida Panthers at Montreal Canadiens (-127, 51/2)

Olli Jokinen and the Panthers look to even their record with their third straight win tonight when they visit the Montreal Canadiens. Here's something to consider: In the Canadiens' last 15 games playing on two days of rest, the total has played over 11 times.

                          Pick: Over 5 1/2

Calgary Flames at Colorado Avalanche (-140, 5 1/2)

The Avalanche are 3-0-0 at the Pepsi Center, but the Flames come to Denver after winning back-to-back games over the weekend. The Flames have played over in four of their last six games and they have the same over record in their last six against Northwest teams. Finally, the Flames have played over in 20 of their last 35 games against Western Conference teams.

                          Pick: Over 5 1/2

Minnesota Wild at Los Angeles Kings (138, 5 1/2)

The Minnesota Wild aim for their best start in franchise history and continue their recent dominance of the Kings when the teams meet at Staples Center tonight. The Kings are 0-7 in their last seven Tuesday games and the Wild have won five straight games and they have won five straight against teams from the Western Conference.

                          Pick: Wild -148
