    Six-pack for Monday

Six reasons why its depressing to be a Ram fan in '07.........

-- An 0-6 start, with four losses by 14 or more points.

-- 16 points, 12 turnovers in three road games.

-- Two injured QB's, and a third-stringer (Brock Berlin) who wasn't even a good college player (Florida/Miami, Fla).

-- Rams lost by 19 points to a team QB'd by Kyle Boller.

-- 2008 is a Leap Year, so thats one more day I have to wait until next spring's draft.

-- Only one bye week this season.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

      13) Tough spot for Dallas, on short week after emotional and lucky win Monday night, but they got waxed by the Patriots, with New England outgaining them 448-283. Cowboys had 12 penalties for 98 yards.

      12) Brian Griese goes 26-45/369 yards and Bears lose? They were -4 in turnovers, allowed Minnesota 311 rushing yards, and lost on a FG at the gun. Very unusual game.

      11) Bears, Vikings both have an Adrian Peterson on the team, but unfortunately for Chicago, the Minnesota Peterson (who went to Oklahoma) is lot better than the Bears' Peterson (who went to Georgia Southern). Minnesota's guy looked a lot like OJ Simpson Sunday, he played that well.

      10) Jacksonville won its last four games by combined score of 90-45; they are very good, and figure to Colts a strong test in the Monday night game next week.

      9) Cincinnati hasn't won since Opening Day; the three drives Kansas City scored TDs on Sunday were 44-44-56 yards, so field position was a major issue for Marvin Lewis this week. How can a team with Cincinnati's offensive talent go 1-11 on third down conversions? They are a sinking ship.

      8) The Kellen Clemens era is coming soon for the Jets, maybe as soon as after their bye in Week 10. Gang Green didn't have a penalty accepted against the Eagles, but they also passed for just 90 yards on 21 attempts, with three sacks. Not good.

      7) When Kurt Warner got hurt after throwing two passes, it made the last three quarters of Carolina-Arizona game a battle between two QBs (Testaverde/Rattay) who were unemployed just a week ago.

      6) The three longest rushes of Reggie Bush's brief career all came in first half of Saints' game in Seattle Sunday night.

      5) Raiders cut Chargers' lead to 21-14 with 5:18 remaining in game; on ensuing drive, Norv Turner was norvelous, giving ball to Tomlinson four times, and 73 yards later, he had the clinching TD. Bolts are now tied for first in AFC West.

      4) Santana Moss needs longer cleats; all he did all day was slip and slide on wet Lambeau turf; when he didnt have catch late in third quarter, they tried to placate him with end around, but he fumbled after another slip, and ball was run back for a TD that proved to be the difference in game.

      3) Moss later dropped an easy catch on a very long pass that would have set Washington up in the red zone; he was then replaced by Keenan McCardell for rest of game. Bad day; got feeling watching this game that the better team didn't win.

      2) Vince Young got hurt, was replaced by Kerry Collins, major step backwards, but Collins led 86-yard drive that tied game, before Bucs won with a late FG. Tennessee better hope that Young isn't hurt too badly.

      1) Browns have scored 32 ppg in last five games. What in the name of Brian Sipe is going on here? If Derek Anderson does this all season, would Browns consider trading Brady Quinn? Anderson isn't much older than Quinn.

        Dunkel Index

        NY Giants at Atlanta
Atlanta's record (1-4) is about what people figured in the aftermath of the Michael Vick fiasco. Neither Joey Harrington nor the newly-signed Byron Leftwich has provided much leadership at the QB position. And the running game, which was the best in the NFL over the last three seasons, ranks just 21st with an average of 91.6 yards per game and is still looking for its first 100-yard game of the season. But of all the bad things that have befallen the Falcons, they have at least been competitive in the early-going. Only one loss has come by more than a TD and that was in Week One. Atlanta did upset Houston at home two weeks ago and had a chance to steal one on the road against Tennessee last week as the Falcon defense forced five Titan turnovers. The Giants come in riding a three-game winning streak, but are just 1-1 on the road and needed to overcome a 17-3 halftime deficit at Washington for their win. If the Giants look past this one, Atlanta still appears capable of pulling a surprise and makes the Falcons the underdog pick (+3 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the game even. Dunkel Pick: Atlanta (+3 1/2). Here are all of this week's picks.

Giants (3-2) @ Falcons (1-4) — Resurgent Giants outscored last three opponents 58-10 in second half; calls for Coughlin’s head are now history. Atlanta had five takeaways last week, started six second half drives in Titan territory, but scored just three points on those six drives, losing 20-13 on INT for TD which got QB Harrington yanked for Leftwich. Giants are on roll, winning last three games; after allowing 478-368 yards in the first two games, they’ve held last three foes to 260-190-277 yards, much better. Not sure if Falcons taking back $19.9M of Vick’s bonus money affects this team, but it can’t be good. Four of five Giant games went over the total.

New York Giants at Atlanta Falcons (ESPN | 8:30 PM ET)

The visiting team has won the last 11 meetings in the series between the Falcons and Giants, who have won in their last six visits to Atlanta. EDGE: GIANTS
The Falcons will be using two new offensive tackles against the Giants, including undrafted rookie Renardo Foster and second-year player Tyson Clabo. That could spell big trouble against a New York defensive line coming off a bye week after sacking Philadelphia QB Donovan McNabb 12 times, including a franchise-record six by DE Osi Umenyiora. BIG EDGE: GIANTS
New York WR Plaxico Burress has scored in every game this season, and his seven touchdown receptions are tied for the most by a Giant through five games since Homer Jones in 1967. New York QB Eli Manning has also won seven straight starts in the month of October. EDGE: GIANTS
The Giants are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
The Giants are 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 Monday Night Football games.
The Falcons are 4-10-1 ATS in their last 15 games as a home underdog.
The Falcons are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games.

New York Giants at Atlanta Falcons – over 44

Bobby Petrino proved in his first five games as an NFL head coach that he’s not afraid to call a pass-heavy game. He’s trying to win on the strength of Joey Harrington’s arm (yikes!) instead of Warrick Dunn’s feet.

The Giants have a balanced offense with a nice running-back tandem in Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward. The return of a dominating ground game (186 rushing yards last weekend) should increase the amount of successful play action bombs to Plaxico Burress.

                  Last week’s record: 1-2

                  Season record: 9-6

                    Monday Night Football Preview

The New York Giants weren't looking so great early this year, but a three-game winning streak now seems to have them back on track as they get set to play on Monday night.

New York started the season with back-to-back losses versus the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers - two games in which they gave up a combined 80 points. However, Eli Manning and company bounced back with wins over the Washington Redskins in Week 3 and the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4, and they managed to push their record over the .500 mark by blowing past the New York Jets 35-24 last weekend.

Manning had just middling numbers in that contest - he went 13-of-25 for 186 yards passing, with two touchdowns and one interception. On the season Manning has a quarterback rating of 82.7, and he's tossed nine TD passes to go along with six picks.

Brandon Jacobs returned from injury for the Giants against the Jets, and he rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries and found the end zone once. Derrick Ward's workload was reduced considerably because of Jacobs' return, but he still managed to pick up 56 rushing yards and a touchdown off 13 carries in the win. Plaxico Burress and Jeremy Shockey both had TD catches, with Burress picking up 124 receiving yards on the day.

The Falcons also started 0-2 this season, but for them the losses have kept coming and they're currently sitting with a 1-4 record. Atlanta's only victory so far this year came in Week 4, when they got past the Houston Texans by a final score of 26-16. The Falcons' four losses have been against the Minnesota Vikings, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Carolina Panthers, and the Tennessee Titans - with the Titans defeat coming Sunday.

Atlanta QB Joey Harrington was terrible in the team's 20-13 road loss to Vince Young and company, going just 16-of-31 for 87 passing yards and an interception. Byron Leftwich eventually replaced Harrington in that contest, but he went only 2-of-8 for 28 yards and an interception. Harrington will get the start for Atlanta once again on Monday, as Leftwich continues to learn the offense and recovers from a sprained ankle.

DeAngelo Hall scored the Falcons' only touchdown versus the Titans, returning a fumble for a score in the first quarter. Morten Anderson booted two field goals in the loss. Warrick Dunn rushed for just 27 yards on 10 carries, while Alge Crumpler had only two catches for four yards. Crumpler has been resting a sore knee and ankle this week.

The oddsmakers like the Giants to win on the road at the Georgia Dome on Monday night, pegging them as a 3.5-point favorite. The total for the game is listed at 44 points. The Giants and Falcons last met in October 2006, with New York coming away with a convincing 27-14 road victory. Atlanta had been favored by 3 points in that contest, while the combined score ended up falling UNDER the day's posted total (41.5 points).

What bettors need to know: Giants at Falcons
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Giants at Atlanta Falcons (3 ½, 44)

                      Falcons’ offensive line struggles

The Falcons’ hopes of recovering from a 1-4 start to the season took a big hit this week with the news that tackle Todd Weiner is out for two weeks. His absence, combined with a season-ending injury to left tackle Wayne Gandy, will force the Falcons to field a vastly inexperienced offensive line this week.

Second-year player Tyson Clabo will line up in Weiner's spot, while undrafted rookie Renardo Foster will replace Gandy. The line already features another rookie starter in left guard Justin Blalock.

Foster will line up against defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who set a franchise record with six sacks against the Eagles earlier this season and had two against former Atlanta QB Michael Vick last season.

"It is a pretty good concern," Falcons coach Bobby Petrino told the Associated Press. "We watch him (Umenyiora) on tape, and he is a great pass rusher and obviously has all kinds of production, so we certainly have to make sure we try to take care of Renardo and help him as much as we can."

The Giants have won six in a row in Atlanta, a run that stretches back to 1978.

                      Burress battling through injury

For a guy who hasn’t practiced in about three weeks, Plaxico Burress is doing extremely well. The Giants’ wide receiver is struggling with a sprained right ankle, but has still scored in every game this season and is tied with New England’s Randy Moss with seven touchdown receptions – the best in the NFL.

"I just have to find a way to block it out and just go out and play the way that I need to play and the way that my team expects me to go out and play," Burress told the Associated Press when asked about the injury.

"But it's one of those things that kind of sits in the back of your mind. You don't want to re-injure it or you don't want to miss a game,” he added.

The 30-year-old has managed 24 catches for 410 yards and seven touchdowns this season, all of which are team highs. Burress sat out every practice this week and his goal is simply to make it through to the Giants’ bye week on November 4.

"I can't wait for that time to come," he told the New York Daily News. "I'm like, 'If I can make it through the next three games to that bye week, two weeks of just staying off of it and not doing anything, I may actually be able to get a full week of practice in.'"

                      Crumpler unhappy with Petrino

After a tough 20-13 loss to Tennessee last week, veteran tight end Alge Crumpler had a lot to say – especially about the Falcons’ coaching staff. Crumpler was highly critical of the way the senior starters on the offense are treated and implied that he is not the only player unhappy with head coach Bobby Petrino.

“I’ve never been in a game where we had that many opportunities — and a miracle, with a botched punt — and we still couldn’t score,” Alge Crumpler told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week. “When we cross the 50, we’re the worst offense in the National Football League.

“We’re trying to trust them,” he added when asked how the players are responding to the coaches. “They keep telling us, ‘Trust us, trust us.’ We’ve been trying to trust them the whole time.”

Crumpler’s frustration increased the more he spoke to the media, and eventually he told them the root of his concerns.

“It’s weird. This is a young guys’ game we’re playing now. It’s been taken out of our hands. It’s just been taken out of the veterans’ hands. When we get into situations, we’re not being given opportunities.”

The Journal-Constitution reported on Sunday that an “uneasy truce” has been called between Crumpler and Petrino this week. Crumpler, who has 18 catches for 194 yards and one TD this season, is expected to start against the Giants.

                      Giant weakness

The Giants have looked solid in most areas of the field on their way to a 3-2 start this season, but there is one part of the game in which they’ve struggled badly. They rank second to last in the NFL in kickoff coverage, allowing opposing offenses to start (on average) at the 32-yard line.

“It has to stop,” safety Gibril Wilson, who features regularly on special teams, told the New York Times on Friday. “The bleeding has to stop this week.”

“Oh man, every aspect of our coverage needs improvement, starting with me,” kicker Lawrence Tynes added. “I got to be more consistent with hang time and direction. And obviously, we got to run down field and make tackles. There’s really not one thing that sticks out.”

The next big test of the Giants’ kickoff coverage comes on Monday night when they face Falcons’ kickoff returner Jerious Norwood, who leads the NFC with a 30.8-yard average.

“Very fast,” All-Pro special-teams veteran David Tyree told the Times when asked about Norwood. “He’s a straight-line runner. That’s how it is week in and week out. This is the NFL, so you got to expect people to do some positive things on their side."

GAME: New York Giants (3-2) at Atlanta Falcons (1-4)
                        DATE/TIME: Monday, October 15 - 8:30 PM ET
                        SPREAD: Atlanta 4 TOTAL: 44

In last season's trip to Atlanta, the New York Giants sacked Michael Vick seven times. Getting to Joey Harrington - or Byron Leftwich - should be even easier Sunday, given the current state of the Falcons' offensive line.

The Giants look to win their fourth straight game and continue their success in Atlanta when they meet the injury-plagued Falcons on Monday night.

The visiting team has won the last 11 meetings in the series, including New York's 27-14 victory last Oct. 15. Osi Umenyiora had two of the seven sacks of Vick for the Giants (3-2), winners of six in a row in Atlanta since a 23-20 loss on Oct. 1, 1978.

Two weeks after piling up 12 sacks against Philadelphia, Umenyiora and his teammates could have another big day rushing the passer. Atlanta (1-4) will be forced to use two new starting offensive tackles, with veteran left tackle Wayne Gandy done for the season after tearing an ACL in last week's 20-13 loss at Tennessee, and right tackle Todd Weiner out for two weeks after undergoing knee surgery Wednesday.

Falcons coach Bobby Petrino will use undrafted rookie Renardo Foster, a Louisville product, to replace Gandy, while second-year player Tyson Clabo will line up in Weiner's spot. The line already features one rookie starter in second-round draft pick Justin Blalock, the left guard.

Foster will be on the spot against Umenyiora, who set a franchise record with six sacks against the Eagles. Umenyiora was matched up with left tackle Winston Justice, who was making his first NFL start, in New York's 16-3 victory over Philadelphia.

"It is a pretty good concern," Petrino admitted. "We watch him (Umenyiora) on tape, and he is a great pass rusher and obviously has all kinds of production, so we certainly have to make sure we try to take care of Renardo and help him as much as we can."

The Giants, though, managed just one sack - by Umenyiora - in last week's 35-24 victory over the New York Jets.

"We need to improve," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "That is something we are analyzing right now. I thought the Jets did a nice job with their scheme, to be honest with you. I thought they did a good job with their protection and their chips and their slides and their chips and the tight end being one so I won't take anything away from them."

While both teams endured their share of controversy in training camp and in the first few weeks of the season, the Falcons are currently dealing with more issues than the Giants. Petrino has insisted that Harrington will again be the starter, although he inserted Leftwich late in the Tennessee game with Atlanta driving for a tying touchdown.

"We got in a situation last week where we were getting a lot of pass rush, he (Harrington) got hit a few times, he usually completes the throws that in the third quarter he was not, and we were just trying to get a spark when we put Byron in there," Petrino said.

In addition, four-time Pro Bowl tight end Alge Crumpler had just two catches for four yards last week and criticized Petrino after the game, questioning the play-calling and accusing the new coaching staff of favoring young players over the veterans.

"We have already had meetings and talked about it," Petrino said. "Alge and I are just fine."

New York is hoping that Plaxico Burress continues his tremendous start to the season. Burress, who has played the last three weeks despite barely practicing due to a sprained right ankle, has scored in every game and is tied with New England's Randy Moss for the NFL lead with seven touchdown receptions.

It's the highest total by a Giant through five games since Homer Jones had than many in 1967.

"I just have to find a way to block it out and just go out and play the way that I need to play and the way that my team expects me to go out and play," Burress said. "But it's one of those things that kind of sits in the back of your mind. You don't want to re-injure it or you don't want to miss a game."

The Giants were also bolstered last week by the return of Brandon Jacobs, who rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries after missing three games due to a knee sprain suffered in the season opener.

New York got 185 yards rushing from Tiki Barber in last season's win over Atlanta, and Eli Manning overcame two first-quarter interceptions by throwing two second-half touchdowns to Jeremy Shockey.

Shockey has just three catches in the last two games, but hauled in his first touchdown of the season last week.

Manning has won seven straight starts in October.

                          Detroit at Anaheim
Detroit took care of business last night in LA and will look to exact a little revenge tonight in Anaheim. Last year it was the Ducks who were hot as they eliminated the Red Wings from the Western Conference finals in six games en route to the Stanley Cup. But Anaheim is slumping right now after losing to Minnesota last night (2-0) for their fourth loss in the last five games. After finishing second in the league in power play production last year (22.4 percent), the Ducks are just 5-for-39 (7.8 percent) this season. With a rested Dominik Hasek in net for the Wings that doesn't look to improve much tonight. Detroit looks like the pick (+115) according to Dunkel, which has the Red Wings favored by 1. Dunkel Pick: Detroit (+115). Here are all of today's games.
