Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on soggy Saturday

      13) It is Week 6 of football season already; time flies when your favorite team hasn’t won a game yet; with games in next two weeks at Baltimore, Seattle, the Rams are staring at an 0-7 start. Eeesh.

      12) I complain a lot about how the NFL protects QB’s, but if you look at this week, and Vinny Testaverde might be QB for the Panthers, so it is important for the league that QB’s stay healthy, to maintain a high quality of play. If I ran NFL team, I’d dip into Arenaball for a guy before signing Testaverde, who isn’t that much younger than me.

      11) What genius decided that Chip Caray should be WTBS’ #1 play-by-play guy for baseball? I would rank him in bottom half of play-by-play guys I hear on baseball package. With two experts at his side, Caray still talks too much. He should defer to Brenly/Gwynn at all times, except when describing action on the field.

      10) It was 93 degrees at gametime Thursday in Phoenix, and the roof was open at Chase Field. I’m curious who makes the roof open/closed decision—pitchers claim it is much better hitter’s park when the roof is open. Diamondbacks say the fans like it better with the roof open.

      9) Interesting stuff in the St Louis paper this week about the inner workings of the baseball Cardinals, how Tony Larussa left town for the winter thinking his friend Walt Jocketty would be back as GM next year. The next day, Jocketty quit. There are lot of politics in these organizations that we never hear about.

      8) I either didn’t know or had forgotten that, from 1993-97, the Colorado Rockies outdrew the combined attendance of the two baseball teams in New York, back when Rockies played at Mile High Stadium, which is bigger than Coors Field. .

      7) Indiana can become bowl eligible for first time since 1993 if they beat Michigan State this week.

      6) This past year, the SEC passed out a record $122 million in revenue to its 12 member schools.

      5) One of the great quotes I’ve heard about college football in the south came from the former LSU QB Rohan Davey, who, standing in the tunnel waiting to take the field before a game at Tiger Stadium, said about the crowd, "….You could just smell the bourbon." That helps explain why LSU wins 80% of their home night games.

      4) I have three requests for bowl matchups:
      a) Arizona State-Nebraska, so Sam Keller can play against his old team, the team that basically voted him off the squad.
      b) any SEC team vs any Pac-10 team (there hasn’t been one in almost 20 years—how about Oregon-Kentucky, Rich Brooks against the other program he built?) and........
      c) Texas A&M-Alabama, Dennis Franchione against the Crimson Tide (and maybe against A&M boosters, if the Aggies lose).

      3) I think Red Sox fans are disappointed they’re playing the Indians, and that helps Cleveland’s chances of advancing to the World Series. Now, Sox fans won't be disappointed if the Indian pitchers don't figure out how to be Ortiz and Ramirez out-- they were awful Friday night.

      2) Don Mattingly would be a bad choice to manage the Bronx Bombers; New York is no place for an entry level manager, especially with a team where anything less than World Series title is a disaster, and guys with four rings don’t have any job security.

      1) Wouldn’t you love to know what the NFL saw when the Patriots sent in "all" their spying material in (does anyone think they didn’t make copies?) to league offices? Shouldn’t the NFL come clean on this, just so there are no doubts?

                Saturday, October 13

Georgia Tech at Miami (ESPN | 12 PM ET)

The Hurricanes are playing their 17th straight game as an unranked team, the first time that has happened in nearly three decades. Star safety Kenny Phillips made a motivational speech to the team a day after last week's disappointing loss to North Carolina in order to prevent his teammates from letting the season get away from them at the midway point. "Everybody's scared to make a mistake and they're not just turning it loose," Phillips said later. "That's the biggest problem. Everyone's worried about making a mistake and not having fun. And that's definitely going to get flipped, right away." EDGE: MIAMI
Georgia Tech has won the last two meetings with Miami both SU & ATS, including the last visit to the Orange Bowl two years ago. The Yellow Jackets are also coming off a disappointing road loss last week at Maryland and are hoping to avoid dropping back-to-back games for the second time in five games. SLIGHT EDGE: GEORGIA TECH
Georgia Tech is 8-3-1 ATS in its last 12 games as a road underdog.
Georgia Tech is 4-1-1 ATS in its last 6 games as an underdog.
Miami (FL) 4-10-1 ATS in its last 15 home games.
Miami (FL) is 2-9-1 ATS in its last 12 games.

                #18 Illinois at Iowa (ESPN2 | 12:05 PM ET)

Big letdown spot for the Illini, who are ranked for the first time in six years after two straight wins over Top 25 opponents. However, they still haven't beaten Iowa in seven years. EDGE: IOWA
The Hawkeyes have lost three straight overall and eight in a row in conference play. They have not beaten a Big Ten opponent since crushing Purdue 47-17 back on October 7th, 2006. EDGE: ILLINOIS
Iowa's defense is giving up just 16.6 points and 113.8 rushing yards per game. That could be the difference against the nation's fifth-best rushing attack, as Illinois is averaging 261.2 yards per game on the ground. EDGE: IOWA
Illinois is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 road games.
Illinois is 2-10 ATS in its last 12 games.
Iowa is 35-16 ATS in its last 51 home games.
Iowa is 5-14 ATS in its last 19 games overall.
Home team is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 meetings.

#1 LSU at #17 Kentucky (CBS | 3:30 PM ET)

LSU has won the last four meetings vs. Kentucky, but the last two at Lexington have been decided by a combined seven points. EDGE: KENTUCKY
This game features the nation's top defense in LSU against the highest-scoring team in the SEC, as Kentucky is averaging 42.7 points per game. Defense typically wins such battles. EDGE: LSU
The Wildcats have won seven straight home games, but they are just 2-8 all-time vs. the top-ranked team in the country. EDGE: LSU
LSU is 15-6-2 ATS in its last 23 road games.

Kentucky is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
Kentucky is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games as a home underdog.
LSU is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 meetings in Kentucky.

#4 Boston College at Notre Dame (NBC | 3:30 PM ET)

Boston College is off to its best start since 1942 at 6-0, the fifth time in school history the Eagles have started so strong. They also own their highest ranking since QB Doug Flutie's Heisman Trophy-winning campaign in 1984. EDGE: BOSTON COLLEGE
The Eagles lead the nation in interceptions with 17 after collecting six last week in a 55-24 rout of Bowling Green. That could spell big trouble against Notre Dame true freshman QB Jimmy Clausen. EDGE: BOSTON COLLEGE
Notre Dame is coming off its first win last week at UCLA, but the Fighting Irish were still outgained 282-140 in total offense. Instead, they took advantage of seven Bruin turnovers, the most for Notre Dame since 1989. SLIGHT EDGE: BOSTON COLLEGE
Boston College is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall.
Boston College is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 vs. independents.
Notre Dame is 3-9 ATS in its last 12 non-conference games.
Notre Dame is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games.
Road team is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 meetings.

#7 South Carolina at North Carolina (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

The Gamecocks are ranked in the Top 10 for the first time since 2001, and head coach Steve Spurrier has worked hard to not let his players get too overconfident. "Hopefully our players are realistic to know that we're a long ways off from really being an outstanding team," Spurrier said. EDGE: SOUTH CAROLINA
The Tar Heels are coming off a big win over Miami last week, and three of their losses have been decided by a touchdown or less. Part of the team's success lately has been the running game, as they have totaled 307 yards on the ground in their last two games after gaining 318 combined in their first four. South Carolina's defensive weakness is stopping the run, allowing 193.8 yards per game. EDGE: NORTH CAROLINA
South Carolina is 10-1 ATS in its last 11 road games.
South Carolina is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 vs. ACC.
North Carolina is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games as a home dog.
North Carolina is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 non-conference games.

Arizona at #10 USC (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

The Trojans have their worst ranking in more than four years falling victim to one of the biggest upsets in college football history last Saturday against Stanford. "Our season's not over," USC defensive end Lawrence Jackson said. "This loss is not devastating. We still have seven games left. We are still a good team with great coaches, even though we walked out of here with a loss. We need to find character and bounce back." EDGE: USC
USC has won five straight in the series with Arizona, outscoring the Wildcats 197-67 (average of 39-14). EDGE: USC
The Trojans will be without starting QB John David Booty due to a broken finger on his throwing hand, which means sophomore Mark Sanchez will make his first career start. "It's clear in my mind and the offensive coaches that Mark's getting ready to play," USC head coach Pete Carroll said. "I'm heading into the game believing that Mark's going to start and lead us to a victory." EDGE: ARIZONA
Arizona is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 games as a road underdog.
Arizona is 8-3 ATS in its last 13 games following a ATS loss.
USC is 7-1 ATS after its last 8 games following a SU loss.
USC is 2-9 ATS in its last 11 games as a favorite of more than 10.5 points.

#19 Wisconsin at Penn State (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

The Badgers will be without second-leading receiver Luke Swann, who will miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury suffered last week at Illinois. Swann had 25 catches for 451 yards this season before the injury. EDGE: PENN STATE
Wisconsin has won five of the last seven meetings with Penn State but lost 35-14 in the team's last visit to Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions have won eight straight at home along with 18 of 19. EDGE: PENN STATE
Wisconsin is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 road games.
Wisconsin is 4-1-1 ATS in its last 5 games following a SU loss.
Penn State is 11-5 in its last 16 home games.
Penn State is 2-6 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Wisconsin is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

Texas A&M at Texas Tech (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

Texas Tech freshman WR Michael Crabtree is leading the country in catches (70), receiving yards (1,074) and touchdown catches (17). Crabtree has at least two touchdowns in all six games this season and will be a very difficult matchup for Texas A&M. EDGE: TEXAS TECH
The Aggies will try to limit Texas Tech's offense by running the clock with long drives when they are on offense. "One of the things that happens when you play a team like [Tech] is you need to be very sufficient and sustain and finish drives," Texas A&M head coach Dennis Franchione said. "When you get red zone opportunities, you need to make the most of them. You can't trade 3's for 7's." They certainly have the right player to accomplish that in RB Jorvorskie Lane, a 263-pound bruiser who has averaged 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the last two games. EDGE: TEXAS A&M
Texas A&M is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 conference games.
Texas A&M is 1-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Texas Tech is 2-8 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Texas Tech is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10 points.
Texas A&M is 0-6 ATS in its last 6 meetings in Texas Tech.

                #24 Georgia at Vanderbilt (ESPN2 | 6 PM ET)

The Bulldogs are dealing with the loss of senior RB Thomas Brown, who broke his collarbone and holds the team lead in touchdowns with six. However, they do have a capable backup in Knowshon Moreno, who actually leads the team in rushing with 485 yards. SLIGHT EDGE: VANDERBILT
Vanderbilt is considering making a change at QB, where Chris Nickson has made 17 consecutive starts. Nickson threw for just 38 yards last week against Auburn and may be replaced by Mackenzie Adams. EDGE: GEORGIA
Georgia is 5-2-1 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
Georgia is 2-7-1 ATS in its last 10 games as a favorite.
Vanderbilt is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 games as a home underdog.
Vanderbilt is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games following a SU loss.
Georgia is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 meetings at Vanderbilt.

#11 Missouri at #6 Oklahoma (6:30 PM ET)

Missouri faces its stiffest test of the season after earning the school's highest ranking since 1981. The Tigers are 5-0 for the second time in as many years, but they are still not trying to put too much pressure on themselves knowing there could be a rematch in the Big 12 championship game. "It's the biggest game we've had here," Mizzou QB Chase Daniel said. "It's a big game because it's the next game. As I said last week, we're not approaching it like a do-or-die, it's your life, you better win, if you don't win, you're going to be fired. It's a football game, just go out there, have fun, play hard, do what you can and move the football." EDGE: MISSOURI
The Tigers are just 2-15 SU against teams in the Top 25, including 0-6 on the road, under head coach Gary Pinkel. They have also lost 13 straight away from home against ranked opponents. BIG EDGE: OKLAHOMA
Missouri will be without leading rusher Tony Temple due to a sprained ankle. Temple did not travel with the team to Norman and has rushed for 351 yards and three touchdowns this year after totaling 1,063 last season. EDGE: OKLAHOMA
The Sooners have won the last four meetings with Mizzou, but they have failed to cover two of the last three.
Missouri is 6-0 ATS in its last 6 lined games going back to last season.
Oklahoma is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 home games.
Oklahoma is 11-4 ATS in its last 15 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-1 in Oklahoma's last 11 conference games.

#22 Auburn at Arkansas (ESPN | 7:45 PM ET)

Auburn has been a much better offensive team with senior Brandon Cox back under center as the team's starting QB. The Tigers are averaging nearly 37 points per game in their last three even though Cox has thrown just two touchdown passes during that stretch. The key is that he has thrown just one interception after tossing four in the first two games combined. EDGE: AUBURN
The Razorbacks have played a couple of cupcakes the last two weeks after losing to Kentucky 42-29 at home back on Septemeber 22nd. They steamrolled North Texas and Tennessee-Chattanooga by a combined score of 100-22 and should be more confident going into this key SEC West matchup. Arkansas beat Auburn 27-10 on the road last year after losing three straight in the series. SLIGHT EDGE: ARKANSAS
Auburn is 9-4 ATS in its last 13 road games.
Auburn 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games as a road underdog.
Arkansas is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
Arkansas is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games.
Underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

Colorado at Kansas State (ESPN | 9:15 PM ET)

Kansas State is coming off a disappointing home loss to intrastate rival Kansas last week that snapped a three-game winning streak. The Wildcats have covered three of the last four meetings with Colorado despite splitting those games straight-up, including the last two at Manhattan. SLIGHT EDGE: KANSAS STATE
The Buffaloes have won three straight both SU & ATS and showed no signs of a letdown from an upset over Oklahoma two weeks ago in beating Baylor on the road last Saturday, 43-23. They also won in their last trip to Manhattan two years ago, 23-20. EDGE: COLORADO
Colorado is 0-5 ATS in its last 5 games as a road underdog.
Colorado is 4-9 ATS in its last 13 conference games.
Kansas State is 10-4 ATS in its last 14 home games.
Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

                    College Football Gameday

Two big Top 25 matchups highlight the college football schedule on Saturday, as No. 1 LSU takes on No. 17 Kentucky and No. 11 Missouri goes up against No. 6 Oklahoma. Also worth a look this weekend is an interesting Big Ten battle between No. 19 Wisconsin and Penn St.

                    LSU (1) at Kentucky (17)

The Tigers passed their first big test of the season last week when they knocked off Florida 28-24 as an 8-point favorite. LSU quarterback Matt Flynn completed 14-of-27 for 144 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Jacob Hester was the hero on offense while rushing for 106 yards on 23 carries, and he ran in for what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown with a minute to go in the fourth quarter. The Tigers’ No. 1 ranked defense had difficulty shutting down their opponent for the first time this season, as Florida QB Tim Tebow gave them some trouble.

The Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season last week, 38-23 to South Carolina as a 4.5-point underdog. The usually potent Wildcats’ offense had trouble getting going against the Gamecocks, as quarterback Andre Woodson was held to 227 yards on 23-of-40 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. Rafael Little rushed for 135 yards on 25 carries, while Steve Johnson and Jacob Tamme each caught a touchdown pass.

Last season the Tigers blanked the Wildcats 49-0 as a 26-point favorite. LSU comes in as a 9.5-point favorite this time.

                    Wisconsin (19) at Penn St.

The Badgers plummeted down the national rankings after dropping their first game of the season to Illinois, 31-26 as 2.5-point underdog last week. The Wisconsin offense delivered in the loss, but once again the defense couldn’t do its part. Badgers’ quarterback Tyler Donovan completed 27-of-49 passes for 392 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, and running back P.J. Hill rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. The Wisconsin defense surrendered 410 yards to Illinois, including 289 rushing yards.

The Nittany Lions climbed back into the win column last week after defeating Iowa 27-7 as a 9.5-point favorite. The win ended Penn St.’s two-game losing streak. Even though the Lions won, quarterback Anthony Morelli still had trouble regaining his winning form. Morelli completed only 18-of-31 passes for 233 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The offensive catalyst in the win was running back Rodney Kinlaw, who rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.

Wisconsin clipped Penn St. 13-3 as a 6.5-point favorite when they met up last season. The Nittany Lions are a 7-point favorite in Saturday’s game.

                    Missouri (11) at Oklahoma (6)

The Tigers continued their impressive undefeated run last week with a 41-6 rout of Nebraska as a 6.5-point favorite. Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel shredded the Cornhuskers both through the air and on the ground while completing 33-of-47 passes for 401 yards with two touchdowns, and also rushing for 72 yards and two more touchdowns on 11 carries. In the one-sided game Missouri racked up 606 total yards of offense while their defense had a solid game, holding Nebraska to 297 yards.

The Sooners bounced back from their first loss of the season last week with a 28-21 win over Texas as a 12-point favorite in the annual Red River Rivalry. After a rough game versus Colorado, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford rebounded with a solid effort, completing 21-of-32 passes for 244 yards with three touchdowns. DeMarco Murray rumbled for 128 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while Jermaine Greisham hauled in a pair of touchdown receptions.

The Sooners upset the Tigers 26-10 as a 1-point road underdog last season, and have beaten Missouri in four straight games. Oklahoma is a 12-point favorite this weekend.

                          Saturday, October 13

BC Lions at Edmonton Eskimos (+10, 46 ½)
                          Saturday, Oct. 13, 3 p.m. ET

The Lions are the CFL’s top team and they’re only getting healthier. Dave Dickenson and Buck Pierce both say they’re good to go, but there’s no rush for either to return. Third-stringer Jarious Jackson has grown comfortable in the starting role and led the Leos to four straight impressive wins.

Edmonton was an offensive disaster last week and BC’s blitzing, ball-hungry defense won’t make things any easier this Saturday. Stefan LeFors will make his second start for the Eskimos but his learning curve for the Canadian game is too steep to expect a drastic improvement at this early juncture. There are deeper problems on offense than the lack of experience behind center.

The Eskies have been the worst bet in the league all season and that’s especially the case at Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton is only 1-6 against the spread at home this season.

That being said, the Eskimos have recorded some stout defensive efforts in recent weeks. Given the nearly meaningless status of this game for BC, I’m more comfortable with the under than laying double-digit points with a visitor.

                          Pick: Under 46 ½

                          Sunday, October 14

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Hamilton Tiger Cats (+7 ½, 50 ½)
                          Sunday, Oct. 14, 1 p.m. ET

The Roughriders need only two wins in their final four games to clinch their first home-field playoff game since 1988. The Regina Leader-Post reports that a sellout playoff crowd could generate an extra half-million dollars for the Riders, so you can bet the front office will motivate the players if they can’t motivate themselves.

Hamilton’s season, on the other hand, officially became a lost cause when the Ticats’ loss in Montreal eliminated them from playoff contention. Unofficially, of course, the season was lost with Jesse Lumsden’s first injury weeks ago. The rest of the season becomes an open tryout for next year’s roster.

Saskatchewan’s offense has become consistent and effective even without receiver Matt Dominguez. The Riders have scored 34, 33 and 33 points over their last three games and been involved in three of the CFL’s four games to play over the total in Weeks 13 through 15.

Along those lines I’d call for another over, but Hamilton’s offense inspires no confidence. The Ticats have covered the spread three weeks in a row thanks to their defense, but that streak ends on Sunday.

                          Pick: Roughriders -7 ½

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders (OTB)
                          Sunday, Oct. 14, 4 p.m. ET

Calgary’s offense suffered last week but now Akili Smith is gone and Henry Burris is back in the saddle after healing rapidly from his dislocated shoulder. Calgary hasn’t made an official announcement yet but Burris has already practiced with the No. 1 offense, so it looks like he’ll start on Sunday. Ben Sankey’s strong relief appearance last week against the Riders gives hope to Stamps fans that Burris now has a capable backup.

The Stampeders are also excited about their 4-3 alignment on defense, which they tried for the first time last Monday with mixed results. Head coach Tom Higgins says the Stamps will stay in the 4-3 for the rest of the season.

But neither the presence of Burris nor the new defensive look make the Stamps a great bet against a healthy Winnipeg squad anxious to overcome its recent struggles.

The Bombers need a fresh start away from Winnipeg after a pair of disappointing home games. They squeaked past the Ticats as 10 ½-point favorites in Week 14 and lost to BC last week in a game they could have won. This week the Bombers get a little closer to clinching the East Division title, no matter who starts for the Stamps.

                          Pick: Bombers

                          Last week's record: 3-1

                          Year to date: 27-29

                            Oakland at San Diego
The Chargers' 1-3 start with essentially the same team that went 14-2 the year before was mystifying and had folks in San Diego questioning whether Norv Turner was the right head coach. But San Diego showed what a dominating team it can still be as the Chargers won in Denver last week (41-3), handing the Broncos their worst home loss since 1966. LaDainian Tomlinson (140 total yards) and Michael Turner (147 rushing yards) showed signs of returning to last year's form. The special teams contributed a TD and the defense held Denver to just a field goal out of 11 drives. It was a complete team effort that should give the Chargers some momentum heading home for this week's contest against division rival Oakland. The Raiders are a pleasant surprise at 2-2 and have relied heavily on the No. 1 rushing offense (194.3 ypg) in the NFL. But their two wins have come against Cleveland and Miami, which are a combined 2-8. Playing against a San Diego team with some newfound confidence will be a tougher test, especially since the Raiders are 1-7 ATS in the last eight meetings between the two teams. San Diego looks like a good pick to cover (-9 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Chargers favored by 16 1/2. Dunkel Pick: San Diego (-9 1/2). Here are all of this week's picks.
