Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

      13) Not surprisingly, Stanford announced that Pritchard will be starting QB against TCU this week; considering that he won as a 41-point underdog in his first start last week, you’d figure he’d get a second start soon.

      12) Carolina signed Vinny Testaverde as backup QB, and he might have to play right away, with Carr bangged up. Vinny was drafted into the NFL eight years before the Panthers’ franchise came into existence.

      11) If I were an athletic director at a univeraity with a big-time football program and I needed a coach, I’d try very hard to hire Navy’s Paul Johnson; we recommended that Alabama hire him last winter, that’s how high our opinion of him is. Excellent coach.

      10) That said, if I was making schedule for a big-time program, I‘d never, ever schedule Navy; there is no upside to it. They can definitely beat you, but beating them gets you yawns.

      9) Instant replay showed its true value at Pitt-Navy game Wednesday, when the ref on the field ruled a touchback after a Pitt fumble, but replays clearly showed the ball never went in the end zone. Terrific stuff.

      8) Four of the current top 10 teams in college football weren’t in the preseason top 25.

      7) Its not hard to tell Florida Gators are rebuilding their hoop program; their first 12 games are at home, with the list of opponents including North Carolina Central, North Dakota State, Stetson and High Point. .

      6) Boston Bruins are opening their hockey season with five games out west, then aren’t leaving the eastern time zone the rest of the season. Anaheim Duck announcers sounded envious talking about it.

      5) Announcers on Nashville-St Louis telecast were talking about how winning/losing a fight can change the momentum in a game. Thankfully, you don’t see that much fighting these days, not like 30 years ago, when guys might drop the gloves ten seconds after the first puck is dropped.

      4) Kansas City Chiefs have been outscored 63-16 in the first half of games this season.

      3) Chicago Bears have used 21 different starting quarterbacks since Brett Favre started his consecutive games streak for the Packers.

      2) New York City talkshows are buzzing this week about the Joe Torre situation; my take on it is this: if Torre gets fired (I don’t think he should) but Brian Cashman better go out the door first. To me, no way should Cashman stay, if Torre goes.

      1) If you don’t watch the Arizona-Colorado series, don’t call yourself a baseball fan. Only two of the games start at 10, and one of them is Friday night. It is the NLCS-- these are worthy teams.

#16 Hawaii at San Jose State (ESPN | 8 PM ET)

This will be one of the few times all season Hawaii QB Colt Brennan will have to showcase himself on national television. The Heisman Trophy candidate is nursing an ankle injury (check Pregame Wire for latest status) and left last week's 52-37 win over Utah State in the first half. He was replaced by backup Tyler Graunke, who threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Warriors to their best start since 1981 at 6-0. Hawaii has posted a school-record 10 straight conference wins. EDGE: HAWAII
San Jose State has won three straight games behind QB Adam Tafralis following an 0-3 start in which all of those losses took place on the road. Tafralis has thrown for at least 302 yards in each of the wins, and the Spartans have won their last two at home by a combined 28 points. EDGE: SAN JOSE STATE
Hawaii's last two visits to San Jose have both resulted in wins, but they were decided by a combined 10 points. The Spartans have also limited each of their opponents to less than 300 yards of total offense during their three-game winning streak. EDGE: SAN JOSE STATE
San Jose State is 15-13-1 straight-up in the all-time series with Hawaii.
San Jose State is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games.
The OVER is 22-5-1 in Hawaii's last 28 conference games.
The UNDER is 17-5-1 in San Jose State's last 23 conference games.

                  Week 16 CFL games

                  Friday, October 12

Montreal (7-7) @ Toronto (7-7) -- Argos won three in row, five of last six games, giving up just 14 ppg in last three. Alouettes snapped three-game skid with win vs Hamilton last week, but in non-TiCat games, Als are just 4-7- they won first two meetings vs Toronto this season, 26-13 here in Week 5 (+2.5), then 29-27 (OT) the next week (-1.5). Under is 3-1 in last four Argo games.

                  Saturday, Oct. 13

BC Lions (10-3-1) @ Edmonton (5-8-1) -- Lions beat Eskimos 29-9 in Week 2 at home (-6), outrushing Edmonton 135-29 and taking ball away four times. BC won last four games by average score of 36-18- four of its last five games stayed under total, as did 4 of last five Edmonton games. Eskimos lost seven of their last 10 games, scoring total of 19 points in losing the last two weeks.

                  Sunday, Oct. 14

Saskatchewan (9-5) @ Hamilton (2-12) -- TiCats are competing, covering last three weeks after being 3-8 vs spread previously; their last two losses were by total of 10 points- they split their last four home games, beating Winnipeg, Calgary. Riders won last two games, scored average of 33.3 ppg in last three; over is 6-1 in last seven games, including last four in row. Riders won four of their seven road games, with wins by 9,12,11,2 points.

Winnipeg (8-5-1) @ Calgary (6-7-1) -- Stampeders lost last three games, allowing average of 33 ppg- their last five home games all went over total. Bombers lost two of last three games; they are 4-1-1 if they score 24+ points, a figure Calgary allowed eight of last ten games. Stamps are 4-2-1 at home, losing only to the Lions (32-27), Riders (33-21 last week). Under is 6-2 in last eight Winnipeg games.

Makin’ Canadian bacon: Week 16 CFL picks
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An average Joe with a shot at easy money is about to get as much air time as anything else that goes down during Week 16.

Wendy’s and TSN have once again dangled a million-dollar incentive to eat a Baconator (the official burger of the CFL, we’ve been told all season on TSN telecasts) and 48-year-old Dave Thompson is this year’s kicking hopeful.

The premise is simple: keep nailing field goals from increasingly difficult distances and you get a chance to kick a 50-yarder for $1 million. There are other prizes for making shorter kicks, but it’s all about the Bordens since Brian Diesbourg walked away a big winner two years ago.

This year the contest added an extra wrinkle: four regional winners kicked off against each other on Thursday afternoon to determine who’d get the million-dollar shot. I thought about offering odds on who’d win the playoff, but this column wasn’t going to get up in time. And as it turns out, I’m glad I didn’t play sportsbook for a day: my long shot ended up winning the playoff.

Thompson will kick for the money at halftime of Friday’s game at the Rogers Centre and anyone who’s ever dreamed of a big payday out of the blue will be rooting for him. Of course, anyone who’s ever wanted to see a major corporation lose a million dollars in a silly giveaway will be rooting for him too.

I fall in both pools, so knock ‘em dead, Dave. He doesn’t have a smooth kicking motion or Diesbourg’s soccer-playing pedigree, so the odds aren’t good. But anyone who reads this column knows I’m partial to underdogs anyway.

Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts (-5 ½, 47)
                    Friday, Oct. 12, 7 p.m. ET

The teams’ 7-7 straight-up (SU) records are identical, meaning the upcoming home-and-home set is massive for postseason positioning. But these teams’ against-the-spread (ATS) records are wildly diverging. Toronto is the CFL’s best bet, sitting pretty with a 10-4 ATS mark. Montreal, at 5-9 ATS, has become an even worse bet in the East than the lowly Ticats.

The Als swept the Argos in a home-and-home set back in Weeks 5 and 6, but times have changed. Toronto is 5-1 SU and ATS since Week 10, while Montreal is only 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS.

Toronto leads the league in terms of points and yardage allowed while Montreal “leads” the league in allowing quarterback sacks and picking up penalties. Then there’s also the shorter week for the Alouettes, who squeaked past the Ticats on Monday and suit up again just four days later.

Both teams recognize the importance of Friday’s game and will be going full guns to secure a win. But no matter which way I look at this game, I can’t help but see the Argos winning by at least a touchdown.

                    Pick: Argonauts -5 ½

BC Lions at Edmonton Eskimos (+10, 46 ½)
                    Saturday, Oct. 13, 3 p.m. ET

The Lions are the CFL’s top team and they’re only getting healthier. Dave Dickenson and Buck Pierce both say they’re good to go, but there’s no rush for either to return. Third-stringer Jarious Jackson has grown comfortable in the starting role and led the Leos to four straight impressive wins.

Edmonton was an offensive disaster last week and BC’s blitzing, ball-hungry defense won’t make things any easier this Saturday. Stefan LeFors will make his second start for the Eskimos but his learning curve for the Canadian game is too steep to expect a drastic improvement at this early juncture. There are deeper problems on offense than the lack of experience behind center.

The Eskies have been the worst bet in the league all season and that’s especially the case at Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton is only 1-6 against the spread at home this season.

That being said, the Eskimos have recorded some stout defensive efforts in recent weeks. Given the nearly meaningless status of this game for BC, I’m more comfortable with the under than laying double-digit points with a visitor.

                    Pick: Under 46 ½

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Hamilton Tiger Cats (+7 ½, 50 ½)
                    Sunday, Oct. 14, 1 p.m. ET

The Roughriders need only two wins in their final four games to clinch their first home-field playoff game since 1988. The Regina Leader-Post reports that a sellout playoff crowd could generate an extra half-million dollars for the Riders, so you can bet the front office will motivate the players if they can’t motivate themselves.

Hamilton’s season, on the other hand, officially became a lost cause when the Ticats’ loss in Montreal eliminated them from playoff contention. Unofficially, of course, the season was lost with Jesse Lumsden’s first injury weeks ago. The rest of the season becomes an open tryout for next year’s roster.

Saskatchewan’s offense has become consistent and effective even without receiver Matt Dominguez. The Riders have scored 34, 33 and 33 points over their last three games and been involved in three of the CFL’s four games to play over the total in Weeks 13 through 15.

Along those lines I’d call for another over, but Hamilton’s offense inspires no confidence. The Ticats have covered the spread three weeks in a row thanks to their defense, but that streak ends on Sunday.

                    Pick: Roughriders -7 ½

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders (OTB)
                    Sunday, Oct. 14, 4 p.m. ET

Calgary’s offense suffered last week but now Akili Smith is gone and Henry Burris is back in the saddle after healing rapidly from his dislocated shoulder. Calgary hasn’t made an official announcement yet but Burris has already practiced with the No. 1 offense, so it looks like he’ll start on Sunday. Ben Sankey’s strong relief appearance last week against the Riders gives hope to Stamps fans that Burris now has a capable backup.

The Stampeders are also excited about their 4-3 alignment on defense, which they tried for the first time last Monday with mixed results. Head coach Tom Higgins says the Stamps will stay in the 4-3 for the rest of the season.

But neither the presence of Burris nor the new defensive look make the Stamps a great bet against a healthy Winnipeg squad anxious to overcome its recent struggles.

The Bombers need a fresh start away from Winnipeg after a pair of disappointing home games. They squeaked past the Ticats as 10 ½-point favorites in Week 14 and lost to BC last week in a game they could have won. This week the Bombers get a little closer to clinching the East Division title, no matter who starts for the Stamps.

                    Pick: Bombers

                    Last week's record: 3-1

                    Year to date: 27-29

ALCS preview & pick: Indians vs. Red Sox
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Indians and Red Sox tied for the majors’ best record after both teams finished the regular season 96-66. Now baseball fans will find out which club really runs the American League when they face off in the ALCS.

Boston won five of its seven meetings with Cleveland this year, outscoring the Tribe 34-25 during those contests. The Red Sox staff kept an ERA just over 3.00 against Cleveland and limited the Indians lineup to a .223 batting average.

Game 1 of the series begins this Friday in Boston’s Fenway Park. The BoSox will likely turn to Josh Beckett, who pitched a complete-game shutout against the Angels last week. Cleveland will give the nod to ace C.C. Sabathia, who is 1-1 in three career starts inside Fenway with a 2.35 ERA during those games.

                            CLEVELAND INDIANS

Why they’ll win: The Tribe’s never-say-die attitude at the plate not only defeated the mighty New York Yankees, but also buried the majors’ most dangerous offense. Cleveland outscored New York 24-16 during the ALDS behind a .315 batting average.

The real story is the Indians’ ability to score runs with runners in scoring position and two outs. Cleveland is batting .444 in these situations, knocking in 13 of its total 22 RBI with its back against the wall.

Jhonny Peralta, Grady Sizemore, Victor Martinez, Ryan Garko and veteran Kenny Lofton are all hitting over .300 in the postseason, and designated hitter Travis Hafner is batting .250 and has drawn five walks.

Cleveland’s offense was able to out-shine the rotation for the first time this season. However, the Indians’ arms did their part in getting to the championship series. C.C. Sabathia, Fausto Carmona and Paul Byrd combined for a 2.84 ERA with 12 strikeouts during their starts. Third starter Jake Westbrook, who was beaten up in Game 3, has the ability to bounce back from rough outings.

If the starters do struggle, the Cleveland bullpen can pick up the slack. The Indians’ relievers hadn’t allowed a run to the Yankees during the ALDS before two solo home runs in Game 4. The bullpen has a 2.00 postseason ERA, thanks to the two Rafaels (Rafael Perez and Rafael Betancourt), Jensen Lewis and closer Joe Borowski.

Why they’ll lose: Cleveland’s pitching, so solid in the second half of the season, began to show weaknesses this week against the Yankees. Staff ace C.C. Sabathia got into trouble early in his Game 1 start, struggling with his command and walking six batters and giving up two home runs.

Westbrook collapsed under the pressure of pitching in Yankee Stadium, allowing six runs on nine hits in Game 3. He also struggled in his one start against Boston this season, getting lit up for five runs in six innings of work back in July.

Cleveland’s staff posted a 4.43 ERA versus the Red Sox this season, losing five of seven meetings. Boston’s hitters batted .282 in those games with eight home runs while the Indians order mustered only 3 ½ runs per game.

                            BOSTON RED SOX

Why they’ll win: The Boston Red Sox have all week to rest and read up on their ALCS opponent. Boston finished off the Los Angeles Angels in three games this past Sunday, giving the team five full days off before the series with Cleveland starts.

This week gives the Red Sox staff time to recharge the arms that posted a 1.33 ERA during the ALDS. Solid opening efforts from starters Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Curt Schilling delivered the series. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield is the likely choice as the fourth starter. If Wakefield’s ailing back holds him out of the championship series, youngster Jon Lester will probably take his place.

The time off also helps Boston’s backup hurlers, although the bullpen didn’t put in too many innings during the ALDS. Beckett’s complete game left the relievers to work only 5 2-3 innings against L.A., giving up just two hits and one earned run, all of which came in Game 3. Hideki Okajima, Eric Gagne, Manny Delcarmen, Jonathan Papelbon and the rest of the BoSox bullpen posted a collective regular-season ERA of 3.10 this year.

The near weeklong break helps Boston’s bats catch a breather after hitting .269 versus the Angels for 19 total runs. Youngsters Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury can recover from the frantic pace of October and veterans like Jason Varitek, J.D. Drew and Mike Lowell can rest their weary legs.

Sluggers David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, who came into the postseason at less than 100 percent, have a chance to lick their wounds and build on solid efforts in the opening series. The two combined for four home runs and seven RBIs, and helped Boston hit .333 with runners in scoring position.

Why they’ll lose: Unlike Cleveland, a team that spreads its hits throughout the game, Boston separates huge scoring explosions with multiple hitless innings.

Outside of Ramirez, Ortiz and Lowell, the Sox don’t get much from the rest of the order. Without those big bats in the middle of the lineup Boston is hitting .209 (14-for-67) in the postseason. The team would have just nine RBIs and one home run.

Cleveland’s pitchers limited the meat of the Yankees order to just a .222 batting average and kept the dreaded New York offense to a collective .230 average for the series. If the Tribe can get around Big Papi, Manny and Lowell, Boston’s other bats might not have enough pop to battle Cleveland’s efficient offense.

Pick: Boston Red Sox in six games
