Thursday's List of 13: Random stuff for a Thursday.......

Random thoughts for an autumn Thursday, as (surprise!!!) the leaves start to change colors (like that’s never happened before)

      13) I didn’t know I had such smart friends; it turns out one of my buddies is holding a $20 ticket on Rockies to win World Series, at 100-1. The ticket was bought in April. Why, I’m not sure. He has never previously shown this level of wisdom.

      12) The biggest day of baseball’s offseason will be 10 days after the World Series, when the world can exhale when we find out if Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contract- that’ll be the biggest domino in the free agent season this winter.

      11) Hopefully, no major league team will be suckered into yet another year of paying Roger Clemens another penny. He got $20M for six wins this year, not exactly a great investment. Buyer beware.

      10) Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are paying $100,000 a month to rent an apartment in Manhattan. That adds up to $1.2M a year. Wonder if they have with cable?

      9) College basketball practice starts Friday at 7pm. First real game is November 5. My Ivy League hoop scout informs me that he thinks Cornell will win that league this season.

      8) Green Bay gained 341 yards in first half against the Bears Sunday night, and led 17-7; in second half, they gained total of 88 yards, lost 27-20; there was one five possession span where Pack ran total of 15 plays that gained 18 yards. Four punts and an INT, while the Bears rallied for a season-saving win. Adjusting at halftime is a big part of coaching.

      7) Part of the problem Broncos are having is also in halftime adjustments; in their five games, their opponent has scored four TDs, FG on their first drive of third quarter, averaging 7.97 yards per play. Not good.

      6) First two rounds of the Masters are moving from the USA Network to ESPN next spring. Somehow, I don’t think Chris Berman’s green jacket will make it onto the telecasts (and that’s a good thing).

      5) I stumbled upon Republican presidential debate on CNBC Tuesday; who knew there were nine guys trying to get the Republican nomination? I never heard of five of them, but it made for good TV.

      4) Lets elect someone, for once, who doesn’t look like a game show host. We’ve had two guys in row get elected President with full heads of hair and they haven’t done too well. Would a bald president be such a terrible thing?

      3) WTBS went overboard in hyping Frank Caliendo’s new latenight show during the first round of the playoffs, to the point where their own announcers were making fun of the promos.

Unfortunately for TBS, the NLCS might not get many viewers east of the Mississippi. FOX has the ALCS and World Series. All things considered, I’ve enjoyed TBS’ work, except for the relentless promos. Two of the NLCS games are starting at 10 eastern tine, an interesting decision.

      2) Bob Brenly should be the #1 analyst on FOX; he says what he thinks, he doesn’t take himself too seriously and he knows his stuff. Ron Darling is also excellent, but I’d rather not lose him on Met telecasts.

      1) If nothing else, Joe Torre deserves a quick decision on his fate as manager of the Bronx Bombers; to leave him hanging shows a typical lack of class by this ownership.

        Baseball - Dunkel Index

        MLB
        Dunkel Index

        Colorado at Arizona
Colorado manager Clint Hurdle missed Tuesday's practice with the flu, but that's about the only thing that has slowed down the Rockies lately. The team continued its late-season streak (winners of 17 of 18) with a three-game sweep of the Phillies that was more impressive because of Colorado's pitching (the bullpen allowed just two runs over 11 2/3 innings) than anything else. The Rockies will certainly have their work cut out for them in Game One against Arizona's Brandon Webb (18-10, 3.01). But Webb struggled against the Colorado offense this season (1-3, 5.77). And Rockies' starter Jeff Francis showed he was up to the ace role when he outdueled Philly's Cole Hamels on the road in Game One of that series. In addition, Francis has had solid success against Arizona in his career (7-2, 3.54), including a 2.84 ERA in three starts this season. The Rockies look like a good underdog pick (+127) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Colorado favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Colorado (+127).

              League Championship Series

Colorado won 17 of last 18 games, but only pitcher to beat them in that span was Webb, 4-2 back on Sept 28; Arizona's ace was 1-3, 6.00 in six starts vs Rockies this year, so only time he beat them in six starts was last time he faced them. Webb is 3-0, 2.39 in his last four starts, overall. Francis is 3-1, 3.04 in his last four starts; he was 1-1, 2.84 in three starts vs Rockies this season. Both sides are hot, well-rested, familiar with the other; Rockies are favorite in series, despite not having home field, based on the amazing run they've been on in the last four weeks.

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks (TBS | 8:37 PM ET)

Arizona ace Brandon Webb has been just mediocre against the Rockies during his career with an 8-7 mark and 3.89 ERA, including 1-3 with a 5.77 ERA this year. However, Webb pitched well in a 4-2 win at Colorado on September 28th, a victory that earned the Diamondbacks a postseason berth. He followed that up by allowing just one run and four hits while walking three and striking out nine in seven innings of a 3-1 win over Chicago in Game 1 of the NLDS last Wednesday. SLIGHT EDGE: DIAMONDBACKS
Colorado's Jeff Francis is coming off a huge win in Game 1 of the NLDS at Philadelphia last Wednesday, giving up just two runs and four hits to the Phillies in six innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. Francis is 7-2 lifetime vs. Arizona with a 3.54 ERA but was on the losing end of a 4-2 decision against Webb the last time they met. EDGE: ROCKIES
The Rockies won six of the last eight meetings between the teams during the regular season and took the season series (10-8) for just the third time in 10 years. Colorado 1B Todd Helton is hitting .375 (24-for-64) lifetime vs. Arizona. EDGE: ROCKIES
The Rockies have won 17 of their last 18 games.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NLCS preview & pick: Rockies vs. Diamondbacks
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The best in the West will collide when division rivals Colorado and Arizona meet in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series.

The Rockies took 10 of the 18 regular season games against the Diamondbacks, hitting .280 versus the Arizona staff. In their most recent run-in, Colorado took two of three at home in the closing days of the regular season.

The NLCS is set to start Thursday at Arizona’s Chase Field. The hometown D-Backs will likely send ace Brandon Webb to the hill to counter Rockies left-hander Jeff Francis.

                ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

Why they’ll win: Arizona’s strength will always be its pitching, yet the Diamondbacks were able to generate some surprising numbers at the plate in their NLDS against one of the better pitching staffs in the bigs.

Over the three playoff games with Chicago, Arizona batted .266 (better than the Red Sox’s two-game average) and totaled 16 runs including six home runs. Shortstop Stephen Drew is hitting .500 (7-for-14) in the postseason, with two round-trippers, while Chris Young and Eric Byrnes add some uncharacteristic power to the D-Backs order.

The run support is allowing Arizona’s pitchers to throw stress-free for the first time after a season of nail-biters. The staff held the Cubs’ power hitters in check, keeping a collective 2.00 ERA during the NLDS with 27 strikeouts. Seventeen of those K’s came from starters Brandon Webb and Doug Davis, who’ll likely start both games in Arizona this week.

The Diamondbacks bullpen has been perfect in the late innings recently with a solid three-inning mix of Tony Pena, Brandon Lyon and closer Jose Valverde. Valverde has been untouchable with six strikeouts in three innings of postseason work.

Why they’ll lose: The Diamondbacks were able to do enough damage at the plate to get past the on-again, off-again Chicago offense. Arizona now faces one of the majors’ most potent run-scoring teams.

Arizona was outscored by the Rockies 86-72 over their 18 divisional meetings this season, with Colorado winning 10 of those games. The Desert Snakes will need runners on base when they go yard instead of settling for solo home runs if they’re to match the Rockies output.

It won’t be easy with Colorado pitching the way it is. Rockies pitchers tallied 26 strikeouts against the Phillies in three games – bad news for a D-Backs offense that whiffed 35 times during their division series. The Rox arms are also backed up by the best defense in big league history.

                COLORADO ROCKIES

Why they’ll win: It wasn’t only the offense that got the job done for the well-rounded Rockies this postseason.

Colorado came into this series known for its powerful attack. Its hitters batted .298 and averaged over six runs per game in the closing days of the season. The Rockies toned down the power in the NLDS, producing runs by any means necessary.

Colorado had 12 extra-base hits during the three games against Philadelphia, getting great production at the plate from some unlikely sources. Second baseman Kazuo Matsui, catcher Yorvit Torrealba and pinch-hit heroes Seth Smith and Jeff Baker all stepped up in October.

The Rox starters have also performed well, especially rookie hurler Ubaldo Jimenez, who was stellar in Saturday’s Game 3. His coming-out party, as well as solid efforts from Jeff Francis, long reliever Josh Fogg and the one-two punch of Brian Fuentes and Manny Corpus, kept the NL’s best bats dumbfounded for the entire series.

Why they’ll lose: Despite winning the season series, Colorado will have to strike when the iron is hot against the Diamondbacks’ stingy defense – even if it means going against what got it there in the first place.

As bad as the Cubs played against Arizona this past week, Chicago manager Lou Piniella did have the right idea by staying aggressive on the base paths with a lot of hit-and-run situations. The Rockies will have to do the same thing but, unlike the Cubs, hit with runners in scoring position and avoid the multiple double plays that did Chicago in.

This style of baseball isn’t natural for Colorado, which isn’t known for stealing bases and playing small ball. The Rox managed only 100 stolen bases in the regular season and didn’t swipe a single bag in the NLDS.

                Pick: Diamondbacks in seven games

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALCS preview & pick: Indians vs. Red Sox
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Indians and Red Sox tied for the majors’ best record after both teams finished the regular season 96-66. Now baseball fans will find out which club really runs the American League when they face off in the ALCS.

Boston won five of its seven meetings with Cleveland this year, outscoring the Tribe 34-25 during those contests. The Red Sox staff kept an ERA just over 3.00 against Cleveland and limited the Indians lineup to a .223 batting average.

Game 1 of the series begins this Friday in Boston’s Fenway Park. The BoSox will likely turn to Josh Beckett, who pitched a complete-game shutout against the Angels last week. Cleveland will give the nod to ace C.C. Sabathia, who is 1-1 in three career starts inside Fenway with a 2.35 ERA during those games.

                CLEVELAND INDIANS

Why they’ll win: The Tribe’s never-say-die attitude at the plate not only defeated the mighty New York Yankees, but also buried the majors’ most dangerous offense. Cleveland outscored New York 24-16 during the ALDS behind a .315 batting average.

The real story is the Indians’ ability to score runs with runners in scoring position and two outs. Cleveland is batting .444 in these situations, knocking in 13 of its total 22 RBI with its back against the wall.

Jhonny Peralta, Grady Sizemore, Victor Martinez, Ryan Garko and veteran Kenny Lofton are all hitting over .300 in the postseason, and designated hitter Travis Hafner is batting .250 and has drawn five walks.

Cleveland’s offense was able to out-shine the rotation for the first time this season. However, the Indians’ arms did their part in getting to the championship series. C.C. Sabathia, Fausto Carmona and Paul Byrd combined for a 2.84 ERA with 12 strikeouts during their starts. Third starter Jake Westbrook, who was beaten up in Game 3, has the ability to bounce back from rough outings.

If the starters do struggle, the Cleveland bullpen can pick up the slack. The Indians’ relievers hadn’t allowed a run to the Yankees during the ALDS before two solo home runs in Game 4. The bullpen has a 2.00 postseason ERA, thanks to the two Rafaels (Rafael Perez and Rafael Betancourt), Jensen Lewis and closer Joe Borowski.

Why they’ll lose: Cleveland’s pitching, so solid in the second half of the season, began to show weaknesses this week against the Yankees. Staff ace C.C. Sabathia got into trouble early in his Game 1 start, struggling with his command and walking six batters and giving up two home runs.

Westbrook collapsed under the pressure of pitching in Yankee Stadium, allowing six runs on nine hits in Game 3. He also struggled in his one start against Boston this season, getting lit up for five runs in six innings of work back in July.

Cleveland’s staff posted a 4.43 ERA versus the Red Sox this season, losing five of seven meetings. Boston’s hitters batted .282 in those games with eight home runs while the Indians order mustered only 3 ½ runs per game.

                BOSTON RED SOX

Why they’ll win: The Boston Red Sox have all week to rest and read up on their ALCS opponent. Boston finished off the Los Angeles Angels in three games this past Sunday, giving the team five full days off before the series with Cleveland starts.

This week gives the Red Sox staff time to recharge the arms that posted a 1.33 ERA during the ALDS. Solid opening efforts from starters Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Curt Schilling delivered the series. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield is the likely choice as the fourth starter. If Wakefield’s ailing back holds him out of the championship series, youngster Jon Lester will probably take his place.

The time off also helps Boston’s backup hurlers, although the bullpen didn’t put in too many innings during the ALDS. Beckett’s complete game left the relievers to work only 5 2-3 innings against L.A., giving up just two hits and one earned run, all of which came in Game 3. Hideki Okajima, Eric Gagne, Manny Delcarmen, Jonathan Papelbon and the rest of the BoSox bullpen posted a collective regular-season ERA of 3.10 this year.

The near weeklong break helps Boston’s bats catch a breather after hitting .269 versus the Angels for 19 total runs. Youngsters Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury can recover from the frantic pace of October and veterans like Jason Varitek, J.D. Drew and Mike Lowell can rest their weary legs.

Sluggers David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, who came into the postseason at less than 100 percent, have a chance to lick their wounds and build on solid efforts in the opening series. The two combined for four home runs and seven RBIs, and helped Boston hit .333 with runners in scoring position.

Why they’ll lose: Unlike Cleveland, a team that spreads its hits throughout the game, Boston separates huge scoring explosions with multiple hitless innings.

Outside of Ramirez, Ortiz and Lowell, the Sox don’t get much from the rest of the order. Without those big bats in the middle of the lineup Boston is hitting .209 (14-for-67) in the postseason. The team would have just nine RBIs and one home run.

Cleveland’s pitchers limited the meat of the Yankees order to just a .222 batting average and kept the dreaded New York offense to a collective .230 average for the series. If the Tribe can get around Big Papi, Manny and Lowell, Boston’s other bats might not have enough pop to battle Cleveland’s efficient offense.

Pick: Boston Red Sox in six games

                LCS: Game 1 Previews

The road to the World Series resumes on Thursday night when Colorado takes on Arizona in Game 1 of the NLCS. The ALCS debut follows on Friday night with Cleveland visiting Boston.

In the NLCS series opener. the starters will be lefty Jeff Francis for Colorado and sinkerball pitcher Brandon Webb for Arizona. Both aces started their sides off with a win in their respective Divisional Series. Francis took care of the Phillies, allowing two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts in six innings. Webb chewed up Chicago, allowing only one run on four hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Coincidentally, Francis and Webb faced off on September 28 when the Rockies and Diamondbacks were closing out the regular season. In that game Webb outpitched Francis and earned the win after allowing two runs in seven innings. Francis was tagged for four runs in six innings. That was the only loss the Rockies have been dealt in their last 18 games. That was also Webb’s only good performance against the Rockies this season. In six starts against Colorado this season Webb is 1-3 with a 5.77 ERA. Francis has gone up against Arizona three times and is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA.

The Rockies knocked off Philadelphia in three straight behind clutch hitting from relative unknowns like Kaz Matsui and Yorvit Torrealba and some power from their heavy hitter, Matt Holliday. Matsui hit .417 with a home run and six RBI in the three-game series, while Torrealba hit .500 with three RBI. Holliday hit a pair of home runs and had three RBI.

The Diamondbacks got past the Cubs thanks to more unexpected offensive production from their young hitters. Stephen Drew struggled throughout the regular season but had a monster series, hitting .500 with two home runs and four RBI. Chris Young only had three hits in 11 at-bats in the series, but two of them were home runs and he also had four RBI.

Colorado and Arizona met up 18 times during the regular season with the Rockies taking the season series with 10 wins.

The ALCS opener could be short on scoring as Boston sends ace Josh Beckett to the hill versus Cleveland’s big ace, C.C. Sabathia. Beckett was practically unhittable against the Angels, as he baffled Los Angeles hitters over nine shutout innings while allowing only four hits with eight strikeouts. Beckett seemed to get ahead of every hitter he faced and did not issue a walk in the gem. Sabathia got into trouble numerous times in his Game 1 start against the Yankees, but repeatedly delivered a big out to get out of some tough jams. Sabathia lasted five innings and allowed three runs on four hits, but his biggest problem were the six walks he allowed.

Beckett only faced Cleveland once this season when he picked up the win after allowing one run in seven innings. Sabathia faced Boston twice during the regular season and posted a 1-1 record with a 1.80 ERA. Oddly enough, Sabathia pitched better in the loss in which he allowed only one run in eight innings, but Cleveland fell 1-0.

The Red Sox outscored the Angels 19-4 in the ALDS thanks to more clutch hitting from David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez. Ortiz is a beast in the playoffs and maintained that reputation by hitting .714 with two monster home runs against the Angels. Ramirez also hit two mammoth home runs, including a towering blast over the Green Monster that capped off Game 2. If the rest of the Red Sox can continue setting the table for Ortiz and Ramirez, it may be all Boston needs to get back to the World Series.

The Indians didn’t need a couple players to step up in their series versus New York, as almost every Indians’ hitter delivered at least once when it counted in the series. Grady Sizemore, Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner all delivered home runs and clutch run-scoring hits in the series, while Kenny Lofton turned back the clock to hit .375 with four RBI and scored a few runs in the series.

Cleveland and Boston clashed seven times during the regular season with the Red Sox holding the edge in the season series with five wins.

                        Thursday's game

Wake Forest shut Florida State out in Tallahassee LY, 30-0, the first time Bowden's 'noles got shut out in Tallahassee; Deacons outgained FSU 307-139 in a surprising beatdown. Seminoles are 5-8 in last 13 tries as road favorite but have won four games in a row since opening loss at Clemson. Mobile QB Lee missed one practice this week to meet with a tutor; not sure if that is a red flag or not. Wake won three in row since losing first two games to BC, Nebraska; they allowed 60 points in last two games, wins vs Maryland (31-24 OT), Duke (41-36). Deacons covered seven of last nine as home underdog.

#21 Florida State at Wake Forest (ESPN | 7:30 PM)

Florida State is back in the Top 25 for the first time since the preseason thanks to the play of QB Xavier Lee, who made his first start of the season in a 27-10 win at North Carolina State last Saturday. Lee completed 16-of-27 passes for 257 yards, including four and a touchdown to WR Greg Carr (140 yards). EDGE: FLORIDA STATE
This is a big revenge game for the Seminoles, who were blanked 30-0 by Wake Forest last year, which marked the first time ever the team suffered a shutout at home in head coach Bobby Bowden's 31 years with the program. EDGE: FLORIDA STATE
The Demon Deacons have won three in a row following an 0-2 start, but they have still failed to cover two of those games as favorites, nearly blowing a 25-point lead in a 41-36 win at Duke last Saturday. EDGE: FLORIDA STATE
Florida State is 21-3-1 straight-up in the all-time series with Wake Forest.
Wake Forest is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 games vs. teams with a winning record.
Florida State is 2-6-1 in the last 9 meetings, all as a favorite.
The UNDER is 22-10 in Florida State's last 32 road games.

#16 Hawaii at San Jose State (ESPN | 8 PM ET)

This will be one of the few times all season Hawaii QB Colt Brennan will have to showcase himself on national television. The Heisman Trophy candidate is nursing an ankle injury (check Pregame Wire for latest status) and left last week's 52-37 win over Utah State in the first half. He was replaced by backup Tyler Graunke, who threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Warriors to their best start since 1981 at 6-0. Hawaii has posted a school-record 10 straight conference wins. EDGE: HAWAII
San Jose State has won three straight games behind QB Adam Tafralis following an 0-3 start in which all of those losses took place on the road. Tafralis has thrown for at least 302 yards in each of the wins, and the Spartans have won their last two at home by a combined 28 points. EDGE: SAN JOSE STATE
Hawaii's last two visits to San Jose have both resulted in wins, but they were decided by a combined 10 points. The Spartans have also limited each of their opponents to less than 300 yards of total offense during their three-game winning streak. EDGE: SAN JOSE STATE
San Jose State is 15-13-1 straight-up in the all-time series with Hawaii.
San Jose State is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games.
The OVER is 22-5-1 in Hawaii's last 28 conference games.
The UNDER is 17-5-1 in San Jose State's last 23 conference games.

Florida State Seminoles at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+6)

                          FSU seeks revenge

Almost 11 months ago on a cold and wet night in Tallahassee, FSU suffered one of its worst defeats in school history. Wake Forest shut out the Seminoles in a shock 30-0 victory and Florida State’s players still cringe at the thought.

"I don't even want to talk about it," Seminoles receiver Greg Carr told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel this week. "Seriously. Because it just – I don't know. It's hard to describe or explain."

FSU cornerback Tony Carter is just as blunt. "It was just nasty, man," he said. "I just remember the fans leaving and feeling like we disappointed a lot of people, and people didn't believe in us anymore. Hopefully we can go up and make their fans feel that."

FSU opened this season with a disappointing 24-18 loss to Clemson but bounced back to win its last four games. It’s not just revenge that the Seminoles have to play for on Thursday. They broke back into the Top 25 this week and will be eager to cement their place in the rankings with another win.

                          Mistakes hurting Seminoles’ defense

The Florida State defense is ranked 18th in the league in yards (302.6) and ninth in points (15.6) per game, but it comes into this week’s clash on the back of a poor performance.

The defense allowed 10 points in the first quarter of Saturday’s 27-10 win against North Carolina State. Although Florida State held the Wolfpack scoreless for the rest of the game, repeated mistakes made life difficult for the Seminoles.

They had 24 missed tackles against N.C. State, and were hit with two pass interference penalties and three penalties overall.

“You pay for it on the scoreboard,” Mickey Andrews, FSU's defensive coordinator, said of the errors in the Tallahassee Democrat. “I don't think we were totally prepared for getting in a fight.

Andrews said his players were not disciplined in the first quarter.

“After that we played pretty good football. We still haven't played 60 minutes. We're going to have to this week.”

The Seminoles face a Wake Forest offense that boasts an effective ground game and scores an average 27.6 points per contest.

                          Deacons’ go-to guy

When in need of something special, Wake Forest usually looks to its proven playmaker – Kenneth Moore. In Saturday’s hard-fought 41-36 win over Duke, the wide receiver once again came up with the big play when his team needed it.

With the Deacons clinging to a 34-29 lead in the fourth quarter against rallying Duke, Moore ran for 53 yards and a TD to clinch the win.

"He has the ability to change a game around real quickly," Wake quarterback Riley Skinner told the Raleigh News & Observer. "We try to get the ball to him as many times as we can because something good's going to happen."

Moore also scored a TD in the second quarter of that game and caught 11 passes for 100 yards. He has 38 catches for 360 yards and a team-leading four touchdowns for the season, and ranks among the ACC's leaders in all-purpose yards.

                          History favors FSU

Wake Forest produced a famous win in Tallahassee last season, but that went against the historical trend in this matchup. Florida State has a dominant 21-3-1 record in the overall series, and had defeated the Demon Deacons 14 straight times before they met in 2006.

FSU still owns a five-game win streak in Winston-Salem, home of the Demon Deacons. The Seminoles haven’t lost there since 1973.

But Wake Forest does have the edge in ATS statistics. The Deacons have covered the spread against the Seminoles in three consecutives games.
