    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Tony Romo threw INTs on his first two passes Monday, the first starting QB in NFL to do that since 1992 (Tommy Maddox, against the Cowboys). This was first time since '00 that an NFL team was -5 in turnovers and won the game.

-- Buffalo became just second NFL team ever to score three non-offensive TDs in one game, and still, they managed to lose the game, in one of the worst late-game meltdowns in NFL history. What a hideous defeat.

-- Are the Lions the worst 3-2 team ever? They've lost two games, by 56-21 and 34-3 scores.

-- Falcons scored one field goal in eight second half drives Sunday, despite starting six of those drives in Tennessee territory, which is why Harrington was replaced late in the game by Byron Leftwich.

-- Bronx Bombers are now 4-13 in their last 17 playoff games and without a World Series title since 2000. Say goodbye to ARod and Abreu; would guess they'll re-sign Posada and Rivera. They won't find a better manager than Torre, for the situation they're in, but he is probably gone, too.

-- The best part of all this will be watching all the ungrateful rats jump off the ship. Those who gloated about four world titles are now saying Torre should be fired. These games aren't played on paper. The better team won.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13.....

This list isn’t a ranking, except the #1 team will be the team we think should be their in the "real" polls. Teams get posted here, based on things that happen from week-to-week…….

      13) Stanford-- Pulled off biggest pointspread upset in college history with first-time starting QB at USC; Mr Ostrander, meet Mr Pipp.

      12) Colorado-- Since 16-6 loss to Florida State, they won 42-0, beat Oklahoma, then won 43-23. Team Hawkins is one of most improved teams in country.

      11) Texas El Paso-- Gave up 92 points in last two games, won both. We need to see Mike Price’s team on TV.

      10) Texas A&M-- Franchione may have temporarily saved his job by rallying from 17-0 halftime deficit to beat Oklahoma St. No word on whether Oklahoma columnists went after Gundy.

      9) Illinois-- Only a 40-34 loss vs. Missouri is keeping Zook’s team from serious Cinderella status.

      8) Boston College-- They start Charlie Weis on a new losing streak this week.

      7) Oklahoma-- Blew the 24-7 lead at Colorado, or they’d be unbeaten, and this with a freshman QB (who is also a scratch golfer). Sooners can't escape Boise St. (Colorado's Hawkins is the former head coach at Boise State).

      6) Cincinnati-- Kelly outcoached Rutgers so badly it wasn’t funny; my question is, will UC have deep enough pockets to keep Kelly, when the big money boys come calling?

      5) Missouri-- Whupped up on Nebraska 41-6, third straight loss in Columbia for the Huskers. Mizzou scored 41 points in all three games.

      4) South Florida-- Escaped trap at Florida Atlantic; some of the big boys are whining about USF, which has to be music to coach Leavitt’s ears.

      3) Ohio State-- All they do is win. Not flashy, but effective.

      2) California-- Seriously, there are people in Berkeley chaining themselves to trees, to protest construction of new athletic facilites, all of which could eventually drive coach Tedford away from Cal.

      1) LSU-- Went 5-for-5 on 4th down vs. Florida, including yet another successful fake field goal. Tiger fans will miss Miles when he goes to Ann Arbor. Whomever gets this job next will have to live up to stupid-high expectations.

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Preview: Hurricanes at Maple Leafs

GAME: Carolina Hurricanes (1-1-1-0) at Toronto Maple Leafs (1-1-1-0)
            DATE/TIME: Tuesday, October 09 - 7:00 PM ET

Goaltender Vesa Toskala battled for playing time on his first NHL team. His chance to be a No. 1 goalie may have finally arrived with his new club.

Toskala is expected to start when the Toronto Maple Leafs (1-1-1) host the Carolina Hurricanes (1-1-1) on Tuesday.

Although he has not won the job away from Andrew Raycroft completely, the Maple Leafs will likely give Toskala most of the playing time for now.

"Our goal here is to have one of our two goalies hot all the time," Leafs coach Paul Maurice said. "We want to keep our hockey team in a position to do that. I won't leave anybody out too, too long, but at the same time when a guy's playing well - a guy's playing well."

Toskala got off to a good start in winning his first home appearance with Toronto, stopping 25 shots in a 4-3 victory over Montreal on Saturday.

Toskala made 26 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss at Ottawa on Thursday in his Maple Leafs debut. The 30-year-old goalie was acquired from San Jose in June along with forward Mike Bell for three draft picks.

In six seasons with the Sharks, Toskala split time with Evgeni Nabokov, never playing more than 38 games. He did, however, go 49-17-5 with a 2.45 goals-against average over the 2005-06 and '06-'07 seasons.

"He's a great goaltender," new Leafs forward Jason Blake said of Toskala, who's 0-2-0 with a 3.03 GAA against Carolina. "There's no question about it."

Blake revealed some stunning news Monday, announcing he has a rare form of leukemia that is highly treatable. The 34-year-old player said he has begun treatment and will still be able to perform at a high level. He made his condition public after talking to teammates at practice.

He said he has started taking a pill daily that 'has proven to be very effective in controlling this cancer.

''The prognosis, and certainly the expectations of my physician, myself and my family, is that I will live a long, full and normal life,' he said in a statement on the team's Web site.

Blake is in no immediate danger and shouldn't miss any playing time, according to team doctors.

Blake scored 40 goals last season for the New York Islanders and signed a $20 million, five-year deal with Toronto in the offseason.

The Leafs added Blake with the hope that he could provide offensive support to captain Mats Sundin, who's on the verge of setting two team records. Sundin is tied with Darryl Sittler for the franchise mark in goals with 389, and the center needs one point to match Sittler's 916 for the most in Maple Leafs history.

Sundin has a point in all three games this season, totaling a goal and five assists. He recorded three assists against Montreal.

Sundin has 30 goals and 36 assists in 61 games against the Hurricanes franchise.

Toronto has struggled on the power play so far, going 0-for-17 before Tomas Kaberle scored with 1:34 left in overtime against the Canadiens.

"We worked hard for it," forward Alexei Ponikarovsky said. "The first two games we've been working hard but didn't get the results we wanted.

"Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette saw his team open a six-game road trip with a 2-0 defeat to Washington on Saturday.

"We showed more spark in the third period," Laviolette said, "but it's too little too late."

While the Leafs have had problems with the man advantage, the Hurricanes have allowed five power-play goals in 18 chances. They went 0-for-4 on the power play Saturday and have scored on only two extra-man opportunities this season.

"We were sitting on our heels," Carolina defenseman Glen Wesley said. "We obviously didn't play to our potential."

Forward Eric Staal has a goal in each of his last three visits to Toronto and has totaled seven points in his past four games at the Air Canada Centre.

The Hurricanes' Cam Ward is 2-3-1 with a 3.79 GAA in six starts against the Maple Leafs, who took three of four meetings last season and won the last two by a combined 10-2.

              Dunkel Index

              Carolina at Toronto
The addition of Vesa Toskala in net has already paid off for the Maple Leafs as the former Shark stopped 25 shots in a 4-3 win over the Canadiens on Saturday. Toskala was 49-17-5 while splitting time with San Jose from 2005-07, but now looks to get the bulk of the time in Toronto, including tonight's contest against Carolina. The Hurricanes had a tough time generating any offense in a 2-0 shutout loss against Washington on Saturday and dropped three of four contests against the Leafs last year. They were outscored in the final two games by a 10-2 margin. Toronto looks like a good pick (-135) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Leafs favored by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: Toronto (-135). Here are all of today's games.
