    Baseball Today - October 7

    SCOREBOARD Sunday, Oct. 7

Cleveland at N.Y. Yankees (6:37 p.m. EDT). Roger Clemens starts for the Yankees as the series shifts to New York.

    STARS

-- Manny Ramirez, Red Sox, hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning and Boston beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-3.

-- Travis Hafner, Indians, drove in the game-winning run with two outs in the 11th inning to lead Cleveland to a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees.

    SWARMED

Helped by a freakish invasion of bombarding bugs that rattled rookie reliever Joba Chamberlain in the eighth inning, the Cleveland Indians rallied to beat the Yankees 2-1 in 11 innings Friday night to take a 2-0 lead in their AL playoff series. Travis Hafner's bases-loaded, RBI single with two outs in the 11th scored Kenny Lofton with the winner.

    OH, MANNY!

Manny Ramirez hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning off Francisco Rodriguez and the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 Friday night, taking a 2-0 lead in their AL playoff series. Ramirez, who is coming off the worst offensive full season of his career, hit a 1-0 pitch over the Green Monster and the seats behind it. It was his 21st postseason home run, one behind Bernie Williams' career record.

    FIRED

Jim Tracy was fired as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday after two seasons filled with long losing streaks and little discernible progress. Tracy's patience and back-patting weren't enough to turn around the Pirates. He produced records of 67-95 in 2006 and 68-94 this season, the shortest run of any non-interim Pirates manager since Bill Virdon was fired late into his second season in 1973.

    SPEAKING

"It's like somebody let them go. Just when you think you've seen it all -- that's home-field advantage." -- Derek Jeter on the swarms of bugs that accosted the Yankees and reliever Joba Chamberlain in the eighth inning of the Indians' 2-1, 11-inning win over the Yankees on Friday night. Cleveland took a two-game lead in their AL playoff series.

    SEASONS Oct. 7

1904 -- Jack CheXXXo got his 41st victory of the season as New York defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-2.

1928 -- Lou Gehrig's two home runs led the New York Yankees to a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, giving them a 3-0 lead.

1945 -- Hank Greenberg's three doubles led Detroit to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the World Series.

1952 -- Billy Martin's running catch on a high infield pop with the bases loaded in the seventh inning snuffed a Dodgers rally and the New York Yankees went on to win Game 7 of the World Series 4-2.

1961 -- New York's Roger Maris won the third game of the World Series with a ninth-inning home run off the Reds' Bob Purkey. The Yankees won 3-2 at Cincinnati's Crosley Field.

1984 -- The San Diego Padres won the National League pennant with a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the final game of the series, their third straight victory after dropping the first two games.

1987 -- Don Baylor singled to break an eighth-inning tie and Gary Gaetti homered in his first two playoff at-bats as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 8-5 in the opening game of the ALCS.

1995 -- Edgar Martinez of the Seattle Mariners hit a tie-breaking grand slam in the eighth inning and drove in seven runs -- most in a postseason game -- to lead the Mariners past the New York Yankees 11-8 and send the AL playoff series to a decisive Game 5.

1998 -- Chuck Knoblauch argued for an interference call at first base instead of picking up the ball while Enrique Wilson rounded the bases and scored to break a 1-all tie in the 12th inning of the Cleveland Indians' 4-1 victory at New York in Game 2 of the AL championship series.

2001 -- San Diego's Rickey Henderson became the 25th player with 3,000 hits with a bloop double in a 14-5 loss to Colorado. Teammate Tony Gwynn ended his 20-year career by grounding out to shortstop in the ninth inning. Gwynn left the game with eight NL batting titles, a .338 lifetime average and 3,141 hits.

2001 -- Barry Bonds wrapped up his record-breaking season with his 73rd homer and shattered the slugging percentage record that Babe Ruth had owned for 81 years. He finished the season with a .328 batting average, a career-high 137 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .863, surpassing the mark of .847 that Ruth set in 1920.

2002 -- The wild-card San Francisco Giants eliminated the Atlanta Braves 3-1 and moved on to face St. Louis in the NL championship series. For the first time since the current postseason format was adopted in 1995, all four teams with the best records were eliminated in the opening round.

2003 -- Florida and the Chicago Cubs set several NLCS records in Marlins' 9-8, 11-inning win. The teams combined for a record seven home runs. The Marlins' Ivan Rodriguez, Miguel Cabrera and Juan Encarnacion all homered in the third inning, the first time an NL team hit three homers in one inning. And the Cubs' nine extra-base hits also was an NLCS record, as were the 17 total extra-base hits.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up college football Saturday

                    13) Virginia Tech led 24-3 at Clemson with 6:59 left in the half, without having scored an offensive TD. Second collapse in a row for Clemson special teams- bad news for Tommy Bowden

                    12) LSU went 5-5 on 4th down, converted another fake field goal, and rallied from 24-14 down to keep their #1 ranking.

                    11) Missouri hammered Nebraska 41-6, but why did they have star QB Daniel in game with 6:00 left, running ball? What can be gained by doing this? It isn't smart.

                    10) Arizona State has five offensive lineman who graduated with their undergraduate degree already.

                    9) In Central Florida-East Carolina game, the opening kickoff of each half was returned for a touchdown.

                    8) Nevada gained 702 yards against Fresno State and lost.

                    7) Only 35,345 fans showed up at Carrier Dome Saturday, for West Virginia's visit to Syracuse-- bad news for the coach.

                    6) Virginia Tech had two special teams TDs in their big win at Clemson, but they haven't blocked a kick in six games, their longest drought since 1999.

                    5) Rutgers has 9,000 people on waiting list for season tickets; maybe one of those people is a QB-- they need one.

                    4) Someone needs to schedule Northwestern-Michigan State for national TV next year; last year, Spartans rallied from 38-3 deficit to win 41-38, then yesterday Wildcats won a 48-41 OT game in East Lansing. Better than watching Iowa-Penn State.

                    3) Texas-El Paso also belongs on TV; they won 48-47 against Tulsa Saturday, a week after rallying from 28-7 deficit to beat SMU in OT. Miners aren't the best team, but their games are fun to watch. CSTV needs to put them on the tube more.

                    2) Weird situation at Tulane, where the new QB is the son of the former coach, who got fired after last season, despite all the fallout from the Katrina situation. Green Wave lost in OT at Army Saturday, after leading LSU late in second quarter in their previous game. Tough place to win.

                    1) Western Michigan led 38-31 with 0:20 left, took a safety to get better field position for the free kick, sound strategy, but after Akron ran free kick back 88 yards for winning TD at the buzzer, no one in Kalamazoo thought it was good strategy.
