    Six-pack for Thursday

-- Rockies are now 15-1 in their last sixteen games. Want to win a bet? Ask any Bronx fan to name the Rockies' rotation

-- Someone needs to tell the Angels to clean their batting helmets. I mean it. Whats the point?

-- Since 1995, Kenny Lofton has played in playoffs every year except '00,'05. He has played in 84 postseason games. Mickey Mantle played in 65 (I know, they didn't have extra tiers of playoff series back then, but you get my point).

-- Gus Frerotte is starting at QB for Rams this week; every article about the Rams contains one of these three words: catastrophe, disaster or decimated. Not good.

-- The broadcast of the Carolina-Montreal NHL game was in French. Weird listening to game on TV, not understanding a word. Kind of like listening to Dick Vitale in the winter.

-- Food for thought: Mike Lowell is a free agent after year, which means Red Sox might be in market for a 3rd baseman. Wonder if they can afford a $30M a year guy at hot corner?

Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts, as playoffs start

I root for a small market baseball team, so playoffs aren’t my favorite thing, kind of like the way homeless people in France probably resent the Cannes Film Festival. Anyway, here are 13 thoughts tinged with bitterness, as baseball playoffs begin

      13) Good news: My favorite ballplayer is in playoffs; Shane Victorino of the Phillies. He runs like hell, has decent power, always plays well when I put him in my fantasy team’s lineup, and he’s a good fielder. His bobblehead wears a grass skirt, by the way (he is Hawai’ian), but I like him anyway.

      12) Bad news: Bronx and Boston both made the playoffs. If they play each other in the ALCS, I may rent a timeshare in Saskatchewan for ten days. Seriously, I despise them both equally, for their snobbishness, greed, kind of like the way you’d resent the guy who stole your girlfriend, because he drives a Lexus and you drive a Corolla. Like I said, this article is tinged with bitterness.

      11) Good news: Bobby Crosby and Rocco Baldelli both have six months before they miss another game due to injury. Both will become free agents in few years, go play for a big market team and become All-Stars. Maybe "tinged with bitterness" was understating things.

      10) Bad news: No Mets for my dad, who stubbornly refused to admit they had pitching issues, until the collapse in late September, when he became very quiet and sad. It isn't good seeing someone you love so dispirited. Seriously.

      9) Good news: Ernie Johnson in WTBS studio for updates. Is there more likeable TV guy in America than Ernie, whose dad pitched in the big leagues, then worked Braves’ games for WTBS? No Chris Berman also qualifies as good news.

      8) Bad news: Watching Diamondbacks without Darin Sutton/ Mark Grace, who turned weeknight Arizona games on dish into WWE telecasts. They are funny but respect the game at the same time. These young Snakes brought out their best work. They will be missed this month.

      7) Good news: The Indians have the best 1-2 starting pitching combo in Sabathia/Carmona. Pitching, defense are supposed to win in playoffs, right? Is Bob Uecker doing Indian games on the radio this month? Oh, that was a movie? Damn……

      6) Bad news: People will praise Joe Torre as a manager. Prior to getting the keys to the richest house in the neighborhood, he had managed 12 big league seasons, and won zero (0-3) playoff games, getting the ’82 Braves (with Biff Pocoroba) in the playoffs, then getting swept.

The day Torre gets inducted into Hall of Fame before Dick Williams, is a day I will puke. Something to look forward to.

      5) Good news: Mike Scioscia is the best manager in playoffs, and he might get a shot at knocking out both Evil Empires. I am an A’s fan rooting for the Halos, that’s how much I don't want a Bronx-Beantown series.

      4) Bad news: Despite being Wild Card team, Bronx is favored to win the World Series. Their fans, who are so arrogant they generally know little about other teams (ask one to name four Colorado Rockies), will be on every barstool, street corner. If you try to talk them about baseball, they'll stare at you in a condescending way, as if to say, "How dare you....."

      3) Good news: I signed up for the NHL Center Ice package, so if the Bronx-Beantown series happens, I can sit and watch the Calgary Flames play, instead of a five-hour baseball game.

      2) Bad news: Cubs are using their sixth different catcher this season, but at least they didn't face old friend Barrett, whose Padres got eliminated in extra innings late Monday night. If he had faced Zambrano in Game 1, would there have been a fracas had an inside pitch been thrown?

      1) Good news: The World Series will end ten minutes before college basketball starts, and we love college hoops most of all. College basketball practice starts October 15.

              ----------------------------------------------------------------------

              Thursday's game
Spurrier is 14-0 vs Kentucky in his coaching career, but this UK squad is best Wildcat team he's faced; four of last five in series were decided by TD or less, with Kentuxky losing last couple of visits to this site, 27-21/44-16. Led by senior QB Woodson, UK is only SEC East team without loss this season (5-0, with wins vs Louisville, @ Arkansas)- they have 14 takeaways (+7) in five games, scoring 40+ points in all five. Wildcats outscored their opponents by 128-42 margin in second half of games.

Gamecocks have QB issues, but Smelley was improvement over Mitchell last week (19-37/279 passing). Carolina is -4 in their last three games turnover-wise; they need to take better care of ball vs Kentucky squad that picked off 2+ passes in four of its five games so far this season. This is a terrific Thursday nite game.

#8 Kentucky at #11 South Carolina (ESPN | 7:30 PM)

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is a perfect 14-0 all-time vs. Kentucky with the Gamecocks and Florida. The Wildcats have lost the last seven meetings, going 2-5 ATS. BIG EDGE: SOUTH CAROLINA
Kentucky senior QB Andre Woodson has been arguably the top QB in the country so far this season, completing 67 percent of his passes with 16 touchdown passes and only one interception. However, Woodson has never beaten the Gamecocks and will be extra motivated in his last chance against them. EDGE: KENTUCKY
South Carolina is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Kentucky's last 8 games as an underdog.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Kentucky's last 10 SEC games.

What bettors need to know: Kentucky at South Carolina

Kentucky Wildcats at South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks (-3 ½)

                  Gamecocks’ offense gets Smelley

Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier made a drastic change to his offense in last Saturday’s game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, starting freshmen quarterback Chris Smelley in place of fifth-year senior Blake Mitchell.

Spurrier wanted to ignite the Gamecocks’ “Cock-n-Fire” aerial attack. Smelley responded with 279 yards and two touchdown passes against the Bulldogs’ 48th-ranked pass defense en route to a 38-21 victory.

"We hit some balls downfield a little bit more than in the past," Smelley told reporters. "So that looked pretty good."

The Gamecocks’ offense ranks 80th in passing yards (224), 65th in points scored (27.2) and 90th in total yards (363.6) this season. This season, Smelley is 44-72 with four touchdowns and three interceptions in four games as a backup and one as a starter.

                  Something’s got to give

The Kentucky Wildcats lead the SEC in scoring this season and are second in passing yards. Meanwhile the South Carolina Gamecocks lead the nation in pass defense and are second in the conference in yards allowed. So which team has the advantage?

The Wildcats’ impressive offensive numbers (268.6 passing yards per game) could be a result of mediocre competition rather than their firepower. Kentucky’s only had to face teams like Eastern Kentucky, Kent State and Florida Atlantic this season.

South Carolina safety Chris Hampton still thinks the Gamecocks have to respect Kentucky’s high-octane offense.

"Really, this is a game that the secondary will have to step up," Hampton told reporters. "This will be a game probably on our shoulders. They have a great quarterback, up for the Heisman. Some good receivers. We'll have to play our best."

The Gamecocks’ defense falls into the same category as the Wildcats’ offense. Spurrier said that the only quality passing attack the Gamecocks’ have faced this season was the number-one ranked Louisiana State Tigers.

Conversely, Gamecocks’ receiver Kenny McKinley believes South Carolina’s defensive numbers are accurate.

"Aren't they ranked No. 1 right now? Yeah, they deserve to be," McKinley added. "I go against them. I'm like, 'Man, no other team can be this strong.' "

                  Wildcats need to push forward

The Kentucky Wildcats will need a better performance defending on third down than they had in their last game.

The Wildcats allowed the Florida Atlantic Owls to go 5-for-11 on third-down conversions in Saturday’s 45-17 drubbing of the Owls. Kentucky is ranked 95th in the nation on opponent's third-down conversions, allowing 43.8 percent.

"We've got to get off the field and get our offense the ball," Wildcats defensive coordinator Steve Brown told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The Wildcats allow over 380 offensive yards per game with over 200 yards coming via the run. Surprisingly, the Cats are allowing just 22 points per game in 2007.

                  Head to head

South Carolina has not lost in its last seven meetings with Kentucky, dating back to 1999. Gamecocks coach Spurrier has never lost to the Wildcats.

"Yeah, we used to have a lot better teams than Kentucky. Now we're very close," Spurrier told reporters. "It's two evenly matched teams."

The Gamecocks are 4-1 straight up this season and 3-1 against the spread. On the other side, the Wildcats are 5-0 straight up and 4-0 against the spread.

                    Thursday, October 4

                    2007 first-round playoff series

3:00 start means bad hitting background, as Utley fanned four times in Game 1, the first three on nine total pitches, but think about this- -in Game 2 of a playoff series, we have two starting pitchers, one (Morales) who made his big league debut August 18, the other (Kendrick) whose first start was June 13. Colorado won 15 of last 16 games, they're on serious roll. Inexperience in this situation is bad news for pitchers. Rockies won Morales' last five starts (2-0, 1.23 in his last four)- he shut Phillies out on September 11, for five innings, in 8-2 win. Rockies were 2-0 this season vs Kendrick, beating him 12-0 September 12.

Bronx was 6-0 vs Cleveland this season; they're favored to win World Series, despite being Wild Card team. Bronx is 7-2 in the last nine Wang starts; he didn't face Tribe this season. Indians won last six Sabathia starts (5-0, 2.45), with eight of his last nine outings staying under total. Sabathia lost 4-1 to Bronx July 29, giving up three runs in 7.2 IP. Wang has 2.77 RA in his last two starts; they won nine of his last twelve road starts.

Arizona won Game 1 last night, as Drew homered, Webb shut Cubbies down for six innings. Pair of lefties here; Davis is 0-1, 7.86 in his last four starts; his last six starts all went over total. Davis beat Cubs and Lilly 3-1 on this field 40 nights ago. Cubs won five of last seven Lilly starts. After bats were silenced by staff aces Wednesday, would expect lot more offense here.

Colorado Rockies at Philadelphia Phillies (TBS | 3 PM ET)

The Rockies have won the last five times they have sent rookie lefty Franklin Morales to the mound. Morales has allowed just three runs in his last 22 innings of work, walking six and striking out 19. One of those outings was an 8-2 victory at Philadelphia back on September 11th, as he pitched five scoreless innings and only gave up three hits. BIG EDGE: ROCKIES
Philly rookie Kyle Kendrick has been outstanding at home this season, going 7-1 with a 3.76 ERA. Kendrick struggled against the Rockies on September 12th in a 12-0 loss, giving up four runs and seven hits in just three innings. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES
The Rockies did not appear fatigued in Game 1 after Monday's late 9-8 win in 13 innings over Arizona. In fact, they seemed to pick up where they left off by getting out to an early 3-0 lead en route to their 15th win in 16 games. EDGE: ROCKIES
The first four hitters in the Phillies lineup struggled mightily in Game 1, going 0-for-15 with nine strikeouts. The shadows on the field seemed to play a key role in their struggles, so expect more of the same in Game 2. EDGE: UNDER

Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia is just 1-7 lifetime against the Yankees with a 7.13 ERA, but they have not faced each other since 2004. This works in Sabathia's favor, as New York will face a much better pitcher this time around. He was 5-0 in his last six starts to end the regular season with a 2.45 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: INDIANS
New York's Chien-Ming Wang was an impressive 9-3 on the road this season, but his ERA away from home was more than a run higher than his overall ERA at 4.91. The Yankees have scored 26 runs in his winning three of his last four road starts. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES
New York won all six meetings between the teams during the regular season.
The Indians are 15-3 in their last 18 home games.

Chicago Cubs at Arizona Diamondbacks (TBS | 10 PM ET)

Chicago's Ted Lilly is winless vs. Arizona at 0-2 in two starts despite a solid 3.38 ERA. Lilly was 6-3 on the road in 15 starts with a 3.76 ERA and suffered a tough 3-1 loss at Arizona back on August 25th. SLIGHT EDGE: DIAMONDBACKS
Arizona lefty Doug Davis has been successful against the Cubs during his time with the Diamondbacks and Brewers, going 7-5 with a 3.39 ERA. Davis has also been very good at home with an 8-3 mark and 4.75 ERA. Arizona has scored 24 runs in his last four home starts, including a win against Lilly on August 25th. EDGE: DIAMONDBACKS
The Cubs are just 7-24 in their last 31 visits to Arizona.
The UNDER is 6-0-1 in the last 7 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Chicago's last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Arizona's last 9 games overall.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALDS preview & pick: Yankees vs. Indians
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In some ways the Yankees and Indians took similar paths to the postseason. Both clubs went to work in the second half, putting up a combined 93-55 record since the All-Star break as of Sunday. But while Cleveland got the job done with pitching, New York bashed its way into October with its bats.

These are the same bats that punished the Tribe during the teams’ six meetings. The Yankees swept the season series, taking all three games in Yankee Stadium in April and getting it done again in Ohio in August.

This American League Division Series opens Thursday in Cleveland with Indians ace C.C. Sabathia taking the mound against New York right-hander Chien-Ming Wang. The first pitch is scheduled for noon ET from Jacobs Field. Here's a preview of how the series will play out.

                        NEW YORK YANKEES

Why they’ll win: The Yankees have a core of postseason veterans, but it all comes down to Alex Rodriguez, who has a career .280 postseason batting average and just six home runs in 35 playoff appearances. A-Rod put up monster numbers this season but has never been able to translate his regular season success into October.

                        New York Yankees
                        Projected Rotation

                        Game 1@ CLE Chien-Ming Wang
                        Game 2@ CLE Andy Pettitte
                        Game 3@ NYY Roger Clemens
                        Game 4@ NYY Mike Mussina
                        Game 5@ CLE Chien-Ming Wang

New York’s offense pulled it from the depths of the American League and made it the best second-half team in baseball. The Yankees averaged almost seven runs per game after the break with Rodriguez, Jorge Posada and Robinson Cano providing the push at the plate. The Bronx Bombers beat up Cleveland this year, batting .348 and pounding out 14 home runs in six wins over the Tribe.

The playoff rotation is a bit of a mystery heading into this week. Nineteen-game winner Chien-Ming Wang gets the nod for Thursday’s Game 1 while veteran lefty Andy Pettitte will make his 35th postseason start in Game 2. Fellow veteran Roger Clemens is the club's choice for Game 3 in New York but his various ailments are big question marks.

Because Boston selected the longer series schedule, the Yankees will have to go with another aging arm, Mike Mussina for a possible Game 4. If the series goes the full five games either Wang or Pettitte could see double duty against the Indians. New York’s pitching staff had a collective 2.67 ERA facing Cleveland this summer, holding the team to a .228 batting average.

Why they’ll lose: New York’s experience is also its greatest weakness. Veterans Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi and Posada have seen their share of postseason wars but are also susceptible to injuries.

The same goes for the aging Clemens, Pettitte, Mussina and closer Mariano Rivera. If these pitchers continue to slide it could put extra pressure on the younger members of the Yankees bullpen to carry the team in the late innings.

                        CLEVELAND INDIANS

Why they’ll win: Cleveland’s 43-29 second half included an amazing run in mid-August through September that pushed it ahead of the rest of the American League Central. The Tribe got it done on both sides of the ball during this streak but it was their rotation that made the biggest difference.

                        Cleveland Indians
                        Projected Rotation

                        Game 1@ CLE C.C. Sabathia
                        Game 2@ CLE Fausto Carmona
                        Game 3@ NYY Jake Westbrook
                        Game 4@ NYY Paul Byrd
                        Game 5@ CLE C.C. Sabathia

Cleveland had a 3.58 ERA after the break with rotation staples Sabathia and Fausto Carmona leading the way with ERAs under 3.00 in the second half. Third starter Jake Westbrook has a solid 3.44 ERA during this period but doesn’t have the wins to show for it.

The Indians lineup suffered a bit of a slump in the second half of the season, scoring less than five runs per game in September. Designated hitter Travis Hafner is the most intimidating bat in the order along with Victor Martinez and Grady Sizemore helping the cause this month.

Why they’ll lose: The Indians struggled against the Yankees this season and don’t have the offense to match the power the Bronx Bombers put in the box. Hurlers Carmona, Westbrook, Paul Byrd and closer Joe Borowski were roughed up by New York in those six losses, a stretch where Cleveland was outscored 47-17 and posted a team 8.19 ERA.

The short series (five games over seven days) will force the Indians to go with Byrd for a possible Game 4 in New York and won’t allow them to give both Carmona and Sabathia a second start. Sabathia, who hasn’t face the Yankees this year, will more than likely get the nod if the series goes the distance, despite his 1-7 career record and an ERA over 7.00 in eight lifetime starts against New York.

Prediction: New York Yankees in five games

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Yankees at Indians: Game 1

The New York Yankees' campaign to win the World Series for the first time since 2000 begins tonight while the Cleveland Indians will be out to end a much longer drought, having not taken home the World Series trophy since 1948.

In Game 1 of the best-of-five series the Indians send Cy Young candidate C.C. Sabathia to the hill while the Yankees go with their ace, Chien-Ming Wang. Sabathia was 19-7 with a 3.21 ERA during the regular season, which are easily the best numbers he’s posted in his already-impressive career. Wang also sported a 19-7 record, with a 3.70 ERA. The ground-ball pitcher may not be flashy but he’s been the most reliable starter for New York this year and is a big reason they made it back to the postseason.

Sabathia and Wang will both be making their first start against their respective opponents on Wednesday, having not faced their respective playoff opponents during the regular season. Which is not to say New York and Cleveland didn't square off this season; in fact, the Yankees swept the Indians by winning all six matchups. New York not only won those games, they hammered the Indians, outscoring them by a combined 49-18 total in the six games.

During the regular season the biggest thorn in the Indians’ side was Yankees’ slugger Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod went 8-of-24 for a .333 average against Cleveland. Of those eight hits, six of them were home runs and he also had 13 RBI in the six games. A-Rod's biggest dinger was a three-run walk-off blast he hit off Indians’ closer Joe Borowski back on April 19. In that game the Indians took a 6-2 lead into the ninth inning, but watched in dismay as Borowski gave up six runs in an 8-6 Yankees' victory. Rodriguez’s three-run homer was the final nail in the coffin in that game.

As everyone knows though, A-Rod's regular season and his playoff performances have been two completely different things in the past. If Rodriguez struggles at the plate early in this series you will quickly hear incessant references to his .071 batting average and four big strikeouts in last year’s ALDS against Detroit. Shutting down A-Rod and getting Borowski though the ninth inning unscathed should be the Indians' main goals, if they hope to win this series.

Here’s a look at the rest of the expected pitching matchups through the rest of this series. Games 4 and 5 are if necessary, of course, and the starters for those games could quickly change if one team takes control of the series early on and forces one of the big guns to pitch again on short rest.

                        Game 2 – Friday Oct. 5
                        Andy Pettitte (15-9, 4.05) vs. Fausto Carmona (19-8, 3.06)

                        Game 3 – Sunday Oct. 7
                        Jake Westbrook (6-9, 4.32) vs. Roger Clemens (6-6, 4.18)

                        Game 4 – Monday Oct. 8
                        Paul Byrd (15-8, 4.59) vs. Mike Mussina (11-10, 5.15)

                        Game 5 – Wednesday Oct. 10
                        Chien-Ming Wang (19-7, 3.70) vs. C.C. Sabathia (19-7, 3.21)

                          Baseball Today - October 4

                          SCOREBOARD
                          Thursday, Oct. 4
N.Y. Yankees at Cleveland (6:37 p.m. EDT). A matchup of 19-game winners Chien-Ming Wang of New York and lefty C.C. Sabathia of the Indians.

                          COMEBACK PLAYERS

Washington first baseman Dmitri Young was chosen as the NL comeback player of the year Tuesday after setting aside professional, medical, legal and substance-abuse problems to become an All-Star. Young won the award after finishing with a career-high .320 average with 13 home runs and 74 RBIs. In the AL, Carlos Pena put together the best performance in Tampa Bay history because he batted a career-best .282 with a club-record 46 home runs and 121 RBIs after joining the Devil Rays in spring training as a non-roster invitee.

                          MOVING ON

Andruw Jones is done with the Braves, general manager John Schuerholz said Tuesday, because the team can't afford to keep the perennial Gold Glove center fielder who has spent his entire career in Atlanta. Jones, 30, slumped to .222 - his worst average since becoming a full-time starter in 1997 - with 26 homers and 94 RBIs in the final season of his $75 million contract.

                          STAYING PUT

Detroit extended manager Jim Leyland's contract by one year, keeping him in the dugout through the 2009 season. A year after reaching the World Series in Leyland's first season, the Tigers finished 88-74, eight games behind Cleveland in the AL Central.

                          LEFT OUT

Adam Eaton, signed to a $24.5 million, three-year free agent deal, was left off Philadelphia's postseason roster against Colorado. Eaton was 10-10 with a 6.29 ERA in 30 starts, going 1-4 with a 7.36 ERA in his last 10 outings. ... Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (17-12) was left off Boston's playoff roster against the Angels because of his ailing back. ... Los Angeles scratched outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. because of a left knee injury that hadn't improved enough at the team's workout Tuesday, and right-hander Bartolo Colon, who felt pain in his right elbow during the workout. Matthews hit .252 with 18 home runs, 72 RBIs and 18 steals, while Colon was 6-8 with a 6.34 ERA.

                          POWER DIP

Home runs in the majors dropped to their lowest level in more than a decade. An average of 2.04 homers per game were hit this season, the Elias Sports Bureau said Tuesday, a drop of 8.1 percent from last year's 2.22 average and the lowest figure in the majors since 2.02 in 1995. Scoring was down 1.3 percent, from 9.72 runs per game in 2006 to 9.59 this year.

                          FANS

Major League Baseball drew a record average of 32,785 fans to games this season, breaking the previous mark of 31,423 set in 1994 - before a 7 1/2-month players' strike caused a steep drop. The majors set a total attendance record for the fourth straight season, drawing 79.5 million, an increase of 4.5 percent from last year.

                          SPEAKING

"It's been tough sleeping the last couple of nights. The way the season ended, obviously, is unacceptable. We had opportunities to get this thing done and as the manager of this ballclub I take full responsibility for that. I've always been associated with winning and it hurts deep down inside, it really hurts to be associated with this type of collapse. That's not why we play the game and there's no way in the world that I thought we'd be in this position right now talking about this.'' - Mets manager Willie Randolph, after New York became the first major league team that failed to finish first after owning a lead of seven games or more with 17 remaining.

                          SEASONS
                          Oct. 4

1906 - The Chicago Cubs won their 116th game of 152 played for a winning percentage (.763) since unmatched. The Cubs were 60-15 on the road for an .800 winning percentage.

1925 - Fans saw the unusual spectacle of two managers, both famous hitters, pitch against each other in the season finale. Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers threw one perfect inning and George Sisler of the St. Louis Browns worked two scoreless in Detroit's 11-6 victory.

1948 - The Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Red Sox 8-3 in a one-game AL playoff. The pitching of Gene Bearden and the hitting of Lou Boudreau led to the championship victory.

1955 - The Brooklyn Dodgers won their first World Series with Johnny Podres blanking the Yankees 2-0.

1964 - The St. Louis Cardinals clinched the NL pennant with an 11-5 triumph over the New York Mets to end the closest pennant race in NL history.

1969 - The major leagues staged their first divisional championships as the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 9-5 and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 in 12 innings in the opening games.

1987 - The Detroit Tigers took advantage of one of the great collapses in baseball history to win the AL East title, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 behind the six-hit pitching of Frank Tanana. The Blue Jays lost their last seven games of the season, including three straight in the season-ending series in Detroit.

1999 - The New York Mets, behind the strong pitching of Al Leiter, clinched the last remaining postseason berth by beating the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 in a one-game playoff for the NL wild card.

2001 - Texas' Alex Rodriguez hit his 52nd homer in a 16-1 loss at Seattle to become the fourth player with 50 home runs and 200 hits in the same season, joining Babe Ruth (1921), Hack Wilson (1930) and Jimmie Foxx (1932).

2005 - Reggie Sanders hit a grand slam and set an NL division series record with six RBIs to help St. Louis beat San Diego 8-5 in the first game of their division series.

Today's birthdays: Jered Weaver 25, Tony Gwynn Jr. 25; Kyle Lohse 29.

                            SCOREBOARD Thursday, Oct. 4

Florida at N.Y. Rangers (7 p.m. EST). Free-agent acquisitions Chris Drury and Scott Gomez make their debuts for the Rangers.

                            STARS

-Paul Stastny, Avalanche, had his first career hat trick in Colorado's 4-3 win over Dallas.

-Dany Heatley, Senators, scored his second goal of the game 2:57 into overtime and Ottawa defeated Toronto 4-3.

-Saku Koivu, Canadiens, scored his second power-play goal 1:05 into overtime to give Montreal a 3-2 win at Carolina.

-Jiri Hudler and Dominik Hasek, Red Wings. Hudler scored and Hasek made three saves in a shootout, lifting Detroit to a 3-2 victory over Anaheim.

                            EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRA

Three of the four NHL games on Wednesday night went beyond regulation time. Montreal and Ottawa won in overtime, while Detroit bested defending champion Anaheim in a shootout. In the other contest, Colorado withstood a late rally from Dallas for a 4-3 victory.

                            LOCKED UP

Dany Heatley agreed to terms on a six-year, $45-million extension with the Senators on Wednesday - 2 1/2 hours before Ottawa's season opener at Toronto. The new deal, which is front-loaded, will pay an average of $7.5 million, tops on the Senators.

                            LONG ROAD AHEAD

New Jersey begins its season-opening nine-game road trip in Tampa Bay on Thursday night. The trip was necessary because the new Prudential Center in Newark is getting its final touches. Only two other NHL teams started a season with nine consecutive road games, Quebec in 1980-81 and Carolina in 1999-2000. Both were also waiting for arena renovation or construction to be completed.

                            REGAINING RESPECT

Philadelphia will try to begin improving on its worst season in franchise history when it opens its season in Calgary on Thursday night. The Flyers were the worst team in the league last season, missed the playoffs for the first time since 1994, set team records for most losses (48) and fewest points (56), and an NHL mark for greatest one-year point drop of 45.

                            CARRYOVER

Montreal, owners of the best power-play unit in the NHL last season at 22.8 percent, scored all three of its goals with the man-advantage on Wednesday night, including the overtime winner in a 3-2 win at Carolina.

                            SNAPPED

Dallas had its 10-game unbeaten streak in season openers end with Wednesday night's 4-3 loss to Colorado. It was the active streak in the league. The Avalanche, meanwhile, moved to 16-5-7 in franchise history in season openers, the best winning percentage in the NHL.

                            ANOTHER SLOW START

Carolina lost its fifth straight season opener with a 3-2 overtime defeat to Montreal on Wednesday night.

                            SPEAKING

''I think it's the local economy right now. I think it's hurting us as well as everyone else.'' - Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom attempting to explain why there wasn't a sellout for the Red Wings' season opener against defending champion Anaheim on Wednesday night.

                              Thursday, October 4

                              Florida at N.Y. Rangers (-177)

New York has won their last two season openers, while Florida has won three straight openers. The Rangers and Panthers split four meetings last season, including two at MSG. The Rangers, though, have won five of the last six meetings there.

                              Toronto at Ottawa (-183)

The Senators now look to extend their mastery over their provincial rivals and complete a sweep of the home-and-home series. Ottawa is 13-2-2 versus Toronto since the lockout ended.

New Jersey at Tampa Bay (-127)

Devils goalie Martin Brodeur is 23-13-2 with five ties, five shutouts and a 2.03 goals-against average against Tampa Bay in the regular season. The Lightning went 3-1-0 against the Devils during the 2006-07 regular season, winning once in a shootout.

                              Colorado at Nashville (-112)

Chris Mason is the new No. 1 goaltender in Nashville. He had 24 wins in 38 starts, including five shutouts and a 2.38 goals-against average last season. The Preds are 2-3-0 all-time in season openers at the old Gaylord Entertainment Center. Colorado, meanwhile, is 8-3-4 in road openers for a .667 winning percentage.

                              Chicago at Minnesota (-199)

Minnesota went 4-0-0 against Chicago last season and will try for its eighth consecutive victory over the Blackhawks. Wild backstop Niklas Backstrom went 23-8-6 with an NHL-best 1.97 goals-against average last season as a rookie.

                              San Jose at Edmonton (+124)

The Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks split four games last season.

                              St. Louis at Phoenix (+102)

St. Louis scored the fifth-fewest goals in the league with 208 and had the second-worst power-play percentage at 12.1 percent. The Coyotes are looking to improve on defense, as they allowed the third-most goals last season with 282.

                              Philadelphia at Calgary (-159)

These teams have met only once in the last four years with the Flyers winning 1-0 in a shootout on Dec. 6, 2005. Philadelphia hasn't won in Calgary since Oct. 12, 2002.
