            Baseball – Betting Notes

            MLB

            Thursday, September 27

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            MLB Betting Notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday’s MLB betting news and notes

            Okajima returns

The Boston Red Sox bullpen will receive a huge boost on Thursday when reliever Hideki Okajima returns to the lineup after a two-week absence. Okajima was shut down Sept. 14 when the training staff expressed concerns about fatigue, but he threw a 40-pitch session in the bullpen on Tuesday and is ready to return.

"There was some fatigue that he dealt with, and much like other guys who have had a little bit of a breather during the season, this was his time," Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell told MLB.com.

"We're hopeful to get him one or two appearances before the regular season concludes, and, at this point he would certainly factor in heavily, as he has all year."

The lefty is 3-2 with a 2.28 ERA in 64 relief appearances for the Sox, and has thrown 60 strikeouts in 67 innings of work so far this season. Boston opens a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday and Okajima is expected to feature.

            Holliday playing through the pain

Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday is playing through an injured left oblique muscle this week as his team tries to secure their first postseason berth since 1995. Holliday missed two games on the weekend with the injury, but has played every game since.

The left fielder’s importance to the Rockies push cannot be understated. He is hitting .338 with 36 home runs and an NL-leading 131 RBIs, and is a strong candidate for the NL MVP award.

"I'm not going to say I'm 100 percent, but I feel good enough to go out there, let it fly and see what happens," Holliday told MLB.com earlier this week. "It's a great time of year and I really want to be out there. If it's playing with a little bit of pain, I'm willing to do that. This is why we play."

Entering Wednesday’s play, the Rockies were on a nine-game winning streak and just three games back in the NL West. They close a three-game series against the L.A. Dodgers on Thursday.

Cabrera slump not a big worry

Melky Cabrera is locked in a 5-for-28 slump over the past five games, but New York Yankees pitching coach Kevin Long says things aren’t as bad as they seem.

"The swing mechanics are pretty good overall," Long told MLB.com. "It's the mental approach to the game that we're trying to work on. We're trying to change the plan a little bit and go another way.

"Usually, mechanical things would be related to something like a tentative swing," Long added. "That's not the case with Melky. He's hitting hard ground balls – they're just at people."

Cabrera has managed just eight RBIs (five of those coming in the same game) in his last 16 games entering Wednesday’s action, and is without a homer in 39 outings. He will get another chance to break out of that slump when the Yanks close out a three-game series against Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Brewers lingering in NL Central race

Despite the Chicago Cubs' best efforts, the Milwaukee Brewers just refuse to die in the NL Central title race. The Brew Crew were just two games back on Wednesday and are focused on winning their remaining five games.

"Actually, now that we're in the position we're in, it's been more relaxed," first baseman Prince Fielder told reporters after Tuesday’s 9-1 win over St. Louis. "There's nothing we can do. We know the Cubs have to lose and this and that, but all we can try to do is win. Go out and win our games."

"Take care of our own business" has become the Brewers' unofficial motto for the final week of the season, and so far they have lived up to it. They have taken the first two of a three-game series against the Cardinals this week, outscoring them 22-6.

On Thursday, the Brewers take on San Diego in the first of a massive four-game series. The two teams met last in May, when the Padres swept Milwaukee at Petco Park.

Los Angeles right-hander Esteban Loaiza has a winning 4-3 record versus Colorado despite carrying an inflated 6.28 ERA. He’s given up 76 hits and issued 22 walks in just 57 1/3 innings against them. SLIGHT EDGE: DODGERS
The Dodgers have lost three straight games with Loaiza on the hill, being outscored 27-8 in the process. The former Cy Young winner has given up 15 earned runs and 12 hits over his last 12 innings. EDGE: ROCKIES
The Dodgers are 11-4 in their last 15 home games.

                Thursday, September 27

                HOT

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) – The 20-game winner looks to wrap up his stellar year by making another Cy Young Award-caliber outing. Beckett has taken his game to another level in September, going 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 30 strikeouts over 28 innings. The All-Star right-hander faces Minnesota (+217) tonight as a –235 favorite.

Scott Kazmir (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) – Despite picking up a loss in his last start, Kazmir has been pitching exceptionally well this month. He struck out nine and gave up just two earned runs in his team's 8-1 loss to the Red Sox on Friday. Before that game, the D-Rays ace hadn’t lost since August 20, going 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA over five starts. He is 2-1 in his last three games posting a 1.00 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Books list Tampa Bay as +114 dogs at home against New York (-122) with the run total set at 9 ½.

Franklin Morales (Colorado Rockies) – The rookie left-hander has only seven major league starts under his belt but has been clutch for a surging Colorado team. He held the Padres to one hit in six innings last Friday. Morales hasn't allowed a run in his last three starts, spanning 17 innings. He looks to continue his shutout streak tonight against the Dodgers (+112) as a –120 favorite. The run total for the game is set at nine.

Yovani Gallardo (Milwaukee Brewers) – Gallardo is facing one of the most important starts of his life tonight. The rookie pitcher is 4-0 with a 1.03 ERA in his last five starts and has 31 strikeouts in 35 innings over that stretch. He will try and keep Milwaukee's slim postseason hopes alive with a win against San Diego. Milwaukee (-161) is favored at home against the Padres (+153) with the run total set at nine.

                COLD

Scott Olsen (Florida Marlins) – Olsen looks to avoid his seventh straight loss this afternoon. He is 0-6 with a 7.45 ERA in eight starts since August 5. The youngster had a decent outing last game, pitching six shutout innings, but has been unable to make his way into the win column lately. He walked 10 batters and surrendered four home runs in his last three games. Books have the Marlins at +115 today against the Cubs (-123).

Esteban Loaiza (Los Angeles Dodgers) – The veteran right-hander has been flat-out horrible this season. He is struggling with his command and having trouble keeping the ball in the park. Loaiza lost each of his last three starts, allowing 13 walks, six home runs and an 11.25 ERA. The Dodgers are +112 underdogs at home against a Rockies side (-120) gunning for its 11th straight win.

                  Thursday, September 27

Cleveland Indians at Seattle Mariners (+113, 10)

The Indians have already secured their place in the postseason, but are still locked in a battle with the Boston Red Sox for the best record in baseball. Both teams are tied at 94-64, with Cleveland closing out a four-game set tonight against Seattle hoping to take the outright lead.

Despite winning two of the first three against the Mariners, the Indians must be concerned about one of their key relievers. Closer Joe Borowski, who has been lights out for most of the season, blew two saves on this trip.

He gave up ninth-inning homers in both Tuesday and Wednesday night’s games, his first back-to-back blown saves this season.

The Indians send Paul Byrd (15-7, 4.55) to the mound as they try to get back to winning ways, but he is 1-2 with a 7.15 ERA in his last four starts. Mariners left fielder Raul Ibanez is 11-for-20 (.550) in his career versus Byrd, with two home runs, a double and a triple.

                  Pick: Mariners +113

Chicago Cubs at Florida Marlins (+115, 10 ½)

The Cubs still seem set to win their first division title in four years, but they are doing it the hard way. Chicago lost the first two games of their current three-game set against the Marlins, but luckily for the Cubs, second-place Milwaukee have not taken advantage.

Chicago scored 30 runs and 10 homers in a three-game home sweep of Pittsburgh last weekend, but hasn't been able to bring that kind of power in Florida. So far this series the Cubs have tallied just six runs and two home runs, and are batting .190.

The Cubs turn to Steve Trachsel (7-10, 4.74) tonight, but he is 1-2 with a 7.62 ERA since joining them from Baltimore in August. He might not be the man to keep Chicago from losing its 10th consecutive game to the Marlins.

                  Pick: Marlins +115

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (+114, 9 ½)

The Yankees' remarkable comeback is complete. They secured their 13th consecutive playoff berth last night after cruising to a 12-4 victory over Tampa Bay.

The Bronx Bombers made a 21-29 start to the season and looked dead and buried, but since then have gone on a league-best 70-38 run to clinch the wild-card spot. They are still mathematically able to win the AL East, but with Boston’s magic number down to two, the Yankees are unlikely to get a 10th-straight division title.

Some teams might take their foot off the gas after clinching a playoff spot, but the Yankees are not one of those teams. They send rookie Phil Hughes (4-3, 4.80) to the hill in search of his third straight win. With the pressure off it’s hard to see New York dropping this one.

                  Pick: Yankees -122

                    Colorado at LA Dodgers
While other teams seem to be wilting under the pressure of the playoff chase, the Rockies are getting stronger. Colorado extended its winning streak to 10 straight with last night's 2-0 win over the Dodgers. In back-to-back nights, Colorado has beaten LA's two best pitchers (Penny and Lowe) and now faces Esteban Loaiza, who is a notch below that duo. Loaiza is 0-3 with a 11.25 ERA in his last three starts. The Rockies will go with rookie Franklin Morales, who has pitched like anything but a rookie recently as he has not given up a run over his last 17 innings. Colorado has won six straight over LA and looks like a good pick (-112) to extend that today according to Dunkel, which has the Rockies favored by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Colorado (-112). Here are all of today's games.
