    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- If you read the article written about Oklahoma State QB Bobby Reid, you can understand why OSU coach Gundy flipped out on the writer; it was amateurish, at best.

-- Brewers came home and pounded Cardinals, so with six days left in season, they're three games behind the Cubs.

-- Milton Bradley tore his ACL while being restrained from going after an umpire; I wonder if Joe Morgan still criticizes the A's for trading him. The guy has too wild a temper, not to mention that he is constantly hurt.

-- Unfortunately, Deuce McAllister also tore his ACL last night, as Saints fell to 0-3. Tough start for New Orleans.

-- Padres went to San Francisco, lost 9-4; Phillies, Padres are now tied for Wild Card, with Rockies one game back.

-- Going back to last year, Packers won last seven games.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13.....

This list, for now, isn't a ranking of top 13 teams; so what this is is really recognition of things that happened over weekend. Keep that in mind before you call me an idiot, then feel free to call me one...........we're getting closer to this being a ranking.

      13) Ball State-- Missed PAT, dropped a sure TD pass in last 0:25, but they went to Lincoln and gained 588 yards, which is enough for me to think they could get to the MAC title game. Not everyone puts up 40 in Lincoln, even if they did lose.

      12) Purdue-- Explosive Boilers look to make Notre Dame 0-5 for the first time ever this week. We wish them good luck.

      11) Arizona State-- Anytime we pick a team laying 10.5 points and they fall behind 19-0 in first quarter, but come back to get the cover, we include them on this list. I'd be more impressed if they actually played a road game before season ends.

      10) Central Florida-- UCF had tough 35-32 loss to Texas in home opener, got off mat to lead Memphis 42-0 at half in their next game, the conference opener. Also won at NC State.

      9) Clemson-- Other than Arkansas, they have best tandem of running backs in country. New QB Harper is off to good start.

      8) Oregon-- Scored 94 points in two road games, 100 in pair of home games. Guess playing baseball didn't hurt QB Dixon.

      7) Kentucky-- Backed up Louisville win with one at Arkansas UK is fun to watch, but schedule is brutal down stretch.

      6) South Florida-- Friday night on ESPN, #5 on this list visits Tampa-- it could be for the Big East title.

      5) West Virginia-- Closest think we have to Switzer's teams at Oklahoma, that just dominated opponents with the run.

      4) Florida-- Coach O's boys scared the Gators in Oxford, but Tebow ran for 166 yards, appears to be indestructible.

      3) Oklahoma-- It is stupid to take points against any of these top five teams, who will try to run score up any time they can, to try and impress nitwit pollsters.

      2) USC-- Hammered Washington State team that outgained Trojans last year in Pullman.

      1) LSU-- Beating Ol' Ball Coach by two TD's is impressive.

            Baseball – Betting Notes

            Tuesday, September 25

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            MLB Betting Notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Tuesday’s MLB betting notes

The Colorado Rockies earned their franchise-best 84th win of the season on Sunday as they continue their playoff push. They have won a season-high eight straight games to close within 1 ½ of San Diego and the NL wild-card lead.

"Their actions speak louder than anything I can tell you guys," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle told reporters on Sunday. "I'm just proud of the way they're going about their business."

The Rockies' bats have produced a major league-leading 127 runs in September, with an NL-best .294 batting average. They have also received strong work from their pitching staff, which ranks sixth in the NL with a combined 4.29 ERA so far this month.

Colorado has six games left to close the gap on the Padres. The Rockies start a three-game series on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. Colorado is a +146 underdog.

            Alou streak breaks records

Moises Alou extended his hitting streak to 27 games when he singled in his fourth at-bat on Sunday. The streak is a franchise record for the New York Mets and the longest one in the majors this season.

"I feel very good at the plate, and I feel like every day, I'm going to have a good game," Alou told MLB.com after the 7-6 win over the Florida Marlins. "I've been feeling that way for the past month."

"In past weeks, when we didn't win as many games and I was hitting the ball good, I wasn't getting the same satisfaction," he added. "To get a win and hit good, that's a good feeling."

Alou is batting .340 with 12 homers and 42 RBIs this season. His recent hitting is helping the Mets maintain a 2 ½-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. New York opens a three-game series against Washington on Tuesday as it looks to secure its second-consecutive division title. The Mets are -230 favorites in the opener.

Soriano gets hot at the right time

Alfonso Soriano has hit 12 homers this month, the most in the major leagues in September and the most by any Chicago Cubs player in a single month since 1957. With the Cubs looking destined for the playoffs, they will be hoping Soriano can extend his hot hitting into October.

"That's a lot of home runs in a month," Cubs manager Lou Piniella told MLB.com. "That used to be my career – for a season. Twelve home runs is amazing. He's a gamer, and he's into it, as are the rest of these players."

Soriano is batting .296 with 31 homers and 65 RBIs this season, and is a major part of a Cubs lineup that's batting .292 this month – the second-best average in the NL.

Chicago closes out its season with a six-game road trip that starts Tuesday with the first of three games against the Florida Marlins. They follow that with a series at Cincinnati. Oddsmakers have the Cubs listed as -134 favorites on Tuesday.

            Pirates lose nine straight

The Pittsburgh Pirates are on the verge of a season-high 10-game losing streak after being swept by the surging Cubs this weekend. They've now fallen 17 games back in their division and have the second-worst record in baseball (66-90).

"When you play in an atmosphere like this, you see what a place could be like to play in," Xavier Nady told MLB.com when asked about playing against a potential playoff team. "Hopefully, one day we'll be there, but we've got a ways to go.

"Whether it's the little things or whatever it might be, we're not doing anything," continued Nady. "And it shows. You don't want to end on something like this."

The Pirates have struggled in every department this season. They rank 26th in the majors in ERA (4.91) and 22nd in batting average (.262). The only real bright spot for Pittsburgh this year was the performance of ace pitcher Tom Gorzelanny, who has a 14-9 record with a 3.73 ERA.

The Pirates close out the season with a six-game homestand against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the St. Louis Cardinals.

              Baseball – Gameday

              MLB

              Tuesday, September 25

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Gameday
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Tuesday’s MLB Gameday

The last week of baseball's regular-season schedule features some notable Senior Circuit matchups. Here's the final MLB Gameday before we start with October baseball:

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies, 7:05pm ET
Chuck James (11-10, 4.11 ERA) vs. Jamie Moyer (13-11, 5.01 ERA)

James is coming off a stellar outing versus the Marlins, in which he tossed seven scoreless innings and surrendered just two hits and a walk. The lefthander also fanned six batters in that victory, which boosted his record to 11-10 on the season. James hasn't lost since facing the Mets on September 1, and he's struck out 110 on the year.

Moyer has turned in two strong starts in a row, giving up two earned runs on four hits over seven innings versus the Mets on September 14, and one earned run on seven hits over six innings versus the Cardinals on September 19. Unfortunately for the lefthander, though, both outings turned out to be no-decisions, keeping him at 13 wins.

Arizona Diamondbacks at Pittsburgh Pirates, 7:05pm ET
Doug Davis (13-12, 4.27 ERA) vs. Ian Snell (9-12, 3.83 ERA)

Davis will be looking to pick up his first victory since September 4 when he takes to the mound against the Pirates on Tuesday night. The lefthander has gone 0-1 with two no-decisions since getting that win early in the month, allowing four earned runs in each of those three outings. Davis needs to win Tuesday to keep his record over the .500 mark.

Snell allowed just one earned run on four hits over seven innings against the Padres in his most recent outing, but he complained of a sore arm after that start. The righthander is still penciled in to take to the mound on Tuesday against the D-Backs, but could end up a last-minute scratch. Snell has just nine wins on the season, but his ERA is at 3.83.

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers, 8:05pm ET
Braden Looper (12-11, 4.67 ERA) vs. Jeff Suppan (10-12, 4.72 ERA)

Looper has been roughed up in two of his past three starts, allowing six earned runs on eight hits over 3 1-3 innings against the Diamondbacks on September 8 and five earned runs on nine hits over 5 2-3 innings against the Astros on September 20. The righthander, though, allowed just one run against the Cubs in his September 15 outing.

Suppan is still below .500 on the season (10-12), and he went just 2-1 with two no-decisions over his past five starts. However, the righthander hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a game in the month of September. Last time out, against the Braves, Suppan gave up three earned runs on seven hits over his six innings of work.

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers, 10:10pm ET
Ubaldo Jimenez (4-4, 4.14 ERA) vs. Brad Penny (16-4, 2.93 ERA)

Jimenez picked up a win over the Dodgers in his last outing, going 6 1-3 innings and surrendering three earned runs on five hits and three walks. That was the righthander's first win since August 25, when he took care of the Nationals. In between those two starts Jimenez went 0-2 with two no-decisions, but his ERA is still at a respectable 4.14.

Penny pitched a solid game against the Rockies last time out, but came away with just a no-decision. The righthander gave up three earned runs on nine hits over six innings in that contest, walking one batter and fanning two others. Penny is 2-0 with three no-decisions over his last five starts, and he's managed to keep his ERA under 3.00 in '07.

                Final Week Notes

                Tuesday, September 25

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Major League Baseball’s Final Week
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A full 25 weeks of major league baseball are in the books for 2007 and four divisions and six playoff spots are still up for grabs. The vast majority of the intrigue is in the National League, where nothing has been settled, with several indicators in place. The American League has Cleveland and Los Angeles primed for playoff baseball after clinching division titles and now trying to secure home field advantage. Boston’s lead over New York is down a single game in the loss column, let the fun begin.

Arizona and San Diego closed out the home portion of their schedules and will continue duel on the road. The Diamondbacks regained possession of first place in the NL West taking two of three over the Dodgers. The Padres on the other hand were laid out by Colorado three straight games, scoring a grand total of six runs. That is not very good news as they embark on seven game road trip, where they are 38-36 (+ 0.8 units). San Diego’s ill-timed losing streak also places them in peril for wild card race, being only one game ahead of Philadelphia. The D-Backs amazing story continues, fighting not only to win the division, yet possibly have the best record in the senior circuit despite being out-scored on the season (690 runs scored -704 allowed). Arizona catches a potential break traveling to Pittsburgh who has lost nine in a row. Tip of the cap goes to Colorado who has won eight in a row and is two games back in the wild card race. If the Rockies can take series against Dodgers, they could make a very interesting weekend at home hosting Arizona. Colorado has already set a franchise record for wins in a season with six games to go.

No team is baseball is more glad to see home than the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brew Crew lost three of four in Atlanta, to fall three games behind the Chicago. Milwaukee finished 32-49 (-17.1 units) on the road, which if they fail to catch the Cubs will be there undoing. Ned Yost club has been special at home with National League best 47-27 record. It would appear the Brewers need to win final seven games and Chicago would have to split six road games to force a one game playoff. With the Cubs history, anything is possible as they travel to Florida and Cincinnati.

The Mets are trying to hold on and save the season, after winning last three games against Florida. New York returns home to Shea Stadium where they are pedestrian 40-34 (-11.4 units), in other words not a lock. Willie Randolph’s squad will be large favorites almost every day hosting Washington and Florida, who are a combined 29 games below .500 in the visitor’s uniforms. Don’t write off Philadelphia just yet for the NL East or wild card chase. The Phillies just concluded an incredibly clutch long road trip with 8-2 record and have six home games left. Philly is 43-32 at Citizens Bank Park, and only Colorado scores more at home in the National League then Philadelphia, who pounds out 5.6 per game. The Phillies finish with Atlanta and Nationals this week.

The Indians and Angels each clinched division titles in final home game of the season. Los Angeles end up with the best home record in the big leagues at 54-27 (+11.1 units) and trails the Tribe by a single game for best record in the American League. From wagering point of view having home field advantage would seem to be a big deal considering how each team has played. However facing the Yankees, who are 15-5 this month, if they finish as the wild card team is not what appears to be a reward in the first round of the playoffs.

The Yankees are all but in the postseason and have set their sights on division crown being down one game in loss column to Boston. The Yankees in order to pass the Red Sox will have to do it on the road with trips to Tampa Bay and Baltimore. Boston, who is 28-25 since July 29, has six Fenway Park home games left on the schedule. They have a pair with Oakland and four with Minnesota. Boston probably wished they could reschedule a couple of the night games to afternoon tilts, as they are 31-14 in the daytime.

                  Colorado at LA Dodgers
There's been no hotter team down the stretch than the Rockies, who have won eight in a row, including a three-game sweep against the Padres over the weekend, to pull within a game of the NL Wild Card. Colorado has won its last two without MVP candidate Matt Holiday (strained oblique), but hope to have him back in the lineup tonight against the Dodgers. That should help against Dodger starter Brad Penny, who 12-2 with a 2.74 ERA lifetime against Colorado. But LA has struggled down the stretch, losing eight of its last nine, and also trails the Rockies in the season series (9-6) with Colorado winning seven of the last nine. The streaking Rockies look like a good underdog pick (+146) according to Dunkel, which has Colorado favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Colorado (+146). Here are all of today's games.

Felix Hernandez (Seattle Mariners) - Felix Hernandez has won three straight decisions and is 7-1 with a 4.14 ERA in his last 11 starts. This will be Hernandez's first appearance against the Indians this season. The Mariners are 4-0 in Hernandez's last four starts against the American League Central and 7-1 in Hernandez's last eight starts against a team with a winning record.

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - Jose Contreras has been outstanding recently, winning his last four decisions with a 2.83 ERA in five starts after going 1-9 with an 8.08 ERA in his previous 11 appearances. On Wednesday, he had a five-hitter in which he had six strikeouts in Chicago's 7-0 victory. The fourth-place White Sox are only one game ahead of the last-place Royals with six games remaining.

Brett Tomko ( San Diego Padres) - The Padres hope to get another solid outing from recently acquired Brett Tomko (4-11, 5.36 ERA). The right-hander has won both of his starts with San Diego after being designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 24. However, if the Padres reach the playoffs, Tomko won't be eligible because he was signed after Sept. 1. In his first start with the Padres on Sept. 15, he gave up four hits and struck out five in six innings of a 6-0 victory over San Francisco.

The right-hander is 0-3 with a 3.38 ERA in four starts since he beat the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 24. -- Omar Vizquel, Giants, drove in four runs and San Francisco beat San Diego 9-4.

-- Nick Markakis, Orioles, hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning to lead Baltimore to a 3-2 win over Kansas City.

                        OUT

Padres left fielder Milton Bradley will miss the rest of the season after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a blowup with an umpire. Bradley, who helped spark the wild card-leading Padres during the season's second half, was ejected from Sunday's game by first base umpire Mike Winters, then hurt his knee during a bizarre scene when manager Bud Black spun him to the ground to keep him from going after the ump in the eighth inning of a 7-3 loss to Colorado.

                        SWEPT

Baltimore completed a season sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 3-2 victory Monday night. The Orioles went 7-0 against Kansas City. It's only the sixth time in club history that Baltimore swept a season series from an AL opponent.

                        EJECTED

Brewers manager Ned Yost was ejected for the second consecutive day during Milwaukee's 13-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Plate umpire Phil Cuzzi tossed Yost in the top of the seventh, after Yost once again left the dugout to argue after Cuzzi called Rick Ankiel safe at home on a two-run single by Ryan Ludwick that made the score 12-5.

                        STREAKS

Moises Alou extended his club-record hitting streak to 28 games with a sixth-inning double for New York, which lost to Washington 13-4 on Monday night. ^SLUMPING=

San Diego dropped its fourth straight, 9-4 to San Francisco on Monday. With The loss, the Padres fell into a tie with Philadelphia for the wild-card lead.

                        TRADE

The San Diego Padres acquired Jason Lane from the Houston Astros on Monday for a player to be named or cash after Milton Bradley was lost for the season with a knee injury. Lane was expected to join the club Tuesday, when San Diego also planned to bring up Drew Macias and switch-hitting Chase Headley from Double-A San Antonio. Lane was batting .178 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs for the Astros this season. He had 61 homers and 189 RBIs in 494 major league games from 2002-07.

                        SPEAKING

"I think I got the short end." -- New York rookie Ian Kennedy on having to dress up as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz as part of a hazing ritual. The Yankees made all their newcomers dress up in Wizard of Oz costumes for the bus ride to the airport and flight to Tampa Bay.

                          Hot Lines

                          Tuesday, September 25

Arizona Diamondbacks at Pittsburgh Pirates: (-111, 8 ½)

What am I missing here? The first-place team in the NL West versus the last-place team in the NL Central and the D-backs are not only dogged but paying plus-money?

Sure, Ian Snell has been great over his last four starts and Arizona’s Doug Davis has not. And ‘Zona had to hop on a plane and cross the country for one of its two final series of the regular season.

But the Bucs have dropped nine straight games heading into Tuesday. Plus Arizona is fighting for the top spot on the NL West totem pole, winning five of its last seven. The Pirates get a break at home for their final games of 2007 but are up against a Diamondbacks team that has something to play for.

                          Pick: Diamondbacks +106

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox: (-124, 8 ½)

The ChiSox and Royals split a four-game series last week with Round 1 of today’s pitching matchup going to Chicago’s Jose Contreras. The right-hander out-dueled rookie Brian Bannister last Wednesday, pitching a complete-game, five-hit shutout while Bannister was beat up for six runs in five innings.

"Wherever A.J. (Pierzynski) put the glove, I was able to hit it," Contreras told reporters after the 7-0 victory. "I was able to throw strike one fastballs. Today everything was working. I felt strong from the get-go, coming out from the bullpen. It was, obviously, my best outing this year. Even though I've had a bad year, this is by far the best I've felt."

The Chicago hurler dedicated the win to his daughters, who had birthdays last week. Hopefully for Sox backers, the fear of finishing behind Kansas City in the Central can provide Contreras with the same inspiration.

                          Pick: White Sox -124

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers: (-144, 7 ½)

Grady Little’s “out with the old and in with the new” attitude in Los Angeles has split the Dodgers clubhouse down the middle. On one side, the veteran players are unhappy with the lack of respect and playing time. On the other, a group of brash young players are still trying to make names for themselves in the bigs.

"We're in a bad spot right now," veteran Jeff Kent told the Los Angeles Times. "Pretty soon we're going to give up the ghost. It's close to the end of the season. And a career for me too. I'm running out of time.

"A lot of kids in here, they don't understand that. ... You hate to waste an opportunity, even if it's one and even if it's your first time. It's hard to get them to understand that because they haven't been there. So there lies some frustration."

The kingpins of each camp are Kent and Luis Emilio Gonzalez on the veteran side, and Matt Kemp and James Loney for the youngsters. Couple this dissension with a hungry Rockies squad on the other side of the diamond and L.A. could be on the losing end of another series sweep.

                          Pick: Rockies +136
