      Streaking Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Monday's streaking starting pitchers

      HOT

Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals) – Gil Meche will try to win his third straight start for Kansas City and improve on his season 9-12 record and 3.70 ERA. The right-hander defeated the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox in his last two outings, allowing four runs and nine hits in 13 2-3 innings. He is 0-4 with a 4.50 ERA in five road starts since beating Detroit on July 20. With one more win this season, Meche will reach double digits for the third consecutive year. Meche is 0-1 with a 0.68 ERA in two starts against Baltimore this season and is looking for his first career win in nine starts at Camden Yards, where he's 0-1 with a 3.45 ERA. The Royals are listed as -107 favorites for the game today. The total is set at 9.

Michael Pelfrey (New York Mets) - Mike Pelfrey can help the Mets get closer to securing a playoff spot by winning his fourth consecutive decision. The 23-year-old right-hander has a 3.31 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 16 1-3 innings over his last three decisions. Pelfrey led the Mets to their only victory over Washington last week, allowing three runs in five innings of an 8-4 victory on Wednesday. The Mets are listed at -210 for their home game with the Washington Nationals today. The total is set at 9 1/2.

      COLD

Barry Zito (San Francisco Giants) - Barry Zito (9-13 with a 4.56 ERA this season) will try to beat the Padres for the first time in six career starts. The left-hander had one of his worst starts of the season Wednesday at Arizona, allowing five runs and nine hits in four-plus innings of a 6-4 loss. Zito is 0-2 in his past six starts, recording his last victory on Aug. 17. The Giants are listed as +127 home underdogs against the Padres. The total is set at 7 1/2.

Matt Chico (Washington Nationals) - Matt Chico (5-9 with a 4.74 ERA this season) is aiming to win his first game since July 31. He is 0-3 with a 4.78 ERA in the seven starts since that win. Two of those defeats have come against the New York Mets, including last Wednesday's. The 24-year-old rookie left-hander allowed five runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings of that outing. Chico has struggled against Moises Alou, who is 5-for-8 with a solo home run against him. The Nationals are listed as +192 underdogs for today's game. The total is set at 9 1/2.

Daniel Cabrera (Baltimore Orioles) - Daniel Cabrera hasn't won in his last six starts and is tied with St. Louis' Kip Wells for the major league lead in losses (17). Cabrera has allowed opponents to bat just .259, but also leads the majors with 104 walks issued and 119 earned runs allowed. Cabrera is 0-5 with an 8.70 ERA since beating the New York Yankees on Aug. 14 and is now 9-17, with a 5.51 ERA overall this season. The Orioles are listed at -101 for the game today. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Hot lines
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hot lines: Monday’s best MLB bets

Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles (-101, 9)

Two of baseball’s most inconsistent teams battle it out when the Orioles meet Kansas in the first of three games today. The Royals have alternated between wins and losses in their last eight games, while Baltimore has done the same in its last six.

But the Orioles will be more confident coming into this series, and with good reason. They have won six straight games against Kansas – a run that stretches back to last season – outscoring them 34-9. The Royals have batted just .181 against Baltimore over that time.

Today the Orioles turn to Daniel Cabrera (9-17, 5.51) to keep their streak against Kansas City alive. He is 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA in five career starts against the Royals.

        Pick: Orioles -101

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (-148, 10)

The Tigers are 5 ½ games back in the AL wild-card race and need a win over Minnesota tonight to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. If they lose, and the Yankees beat Toronto, they will not feature in the postseason this year.

It’s not like Detroit is playing badly, they are merely victims of the success of the Yankees and the Cleveland Indians. If you exclude a recent three-game sweep against the Indians, the Tigers have actually won 13 of their last 15 games.

They have also totally dominated the Twins this season, winning seven consecutive games against them. Detroit’s lineup will face Minnesota righty Carlos Silva (12-14, 4.40) tonight, who is 4-3 with a 4.92 ERA in 11 career games and 10 starts against the Tigers.

        Pick: Tigers -148

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (-140, 8 ½)

The Brewers have lost four of their last five games to fall 3 ½ behind the Chicago Cubs with under a week left in the season. A win in today’s series opener against St. Louis is a must if the Brewers are to retain any chance of making their first postseason appearance since 1982.

The Cardinals, despite losing 14 of their last 17 games, always play Milwaukee hard and have won six in a row against the Brewers. That includes three straight wins at Miller Park. St. Louis split a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves this weekend, with Cardinals sluggers Albert Pujols and Rick Ankiel looking good at the plate.

It will be up to Brewers right-hander Dave Bush (11-10, 5.20) to keep those two, and the rest of the Cards lineup, quiet tonight. He is 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA in three career starts against St. Louis.

        Pick: Cardinals +132

A.J. Burnett was replaced by rookie Jesse Litsch as the Toronto Blue Jays' starting pitcher for Monday's series finale against the New York Yankees.

"Burnett had to go home for personal reasons," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said about 2 1/2 hours before the game was scheduled to start.

Burnett is 9-7 with a 3.40 ERA in 23 starts this season, going 1-0 with an 0.60 ERA in two starts against the Yankees.

Litsch is 6-9 with a 4.16 ERA in 18 starts. He lost to New York on May 30, allowing five runs in the first inning, and didn't get a decision on Aug. 6, when he allowed three runs in five innings.

Steven Jackson will miss at least Week 4 with a partial tear of his groin.
Jackson's injury was revealed by coach Scott Linehan on Monday. Rookie Brian Leonard will get the bulk of the carries for St. Louis until Jackson returns. It's uncertain how long Jackson will be out, but torn groins usually mean multiple weeks of rehab. Linehan called Jackson "week to week."
