      LA Dodgers at Arizona
The Dodgers had their longest losing streak of the season extended to seven games yesterday in a 6-2 loss to Arizona. The loss eliminated LA from the NL West race and all but sealed their fate in the Wild Card. The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, are playing their best baseball at the right time as they've won four straight and five of their last six. Arizona starter Edgar Gonzalez doesn't have the numbers of LA's Chad Billingsley, but has had two nice outings since being reinserted into the starting rotation, including a five-inning effort in beating the Dodgers (6-1) last Sunday. The D-backs look like a good underdog pick (+118) today according to Dunkel, which has Arizona favored by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Arizona (+118). Here are all of today's games.

          Sunday, September 23

Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres: (-128, 7 ½)

The die-hard Rockies refuse to go quietly in the NL wild-card race. Since stringing together seven straight victories, Colorado has pulled within 2 ½ games of the Padres for the final ticket to the postseason.

This past week the Rockies are hitting .314 at the plate and have knocked 31 of their 82 hits for extra bases, including 14 round trippers.

The pitching staff is doing its part too, posting a collective 2.78 ERA in the past seven days. This number includes a seven-inning, one-run effort last Tuesday from today’s starter Jeff Francis.

          Pick: Rockies +120

Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks: (+106, 9)

The Dodgers are done. Los Angeles has packed it in for the season after losing seven straight games, including a 6-2 loss to Arizona on Saturday that officially put the nail in the coffin of the Dodgers’ playoff hopes.

"I think we can play for next year, play spoiler right now, because I think we're pretty much done," starting pitcher David Wells told reporters after Saturday’s loss.

During this slump, Los Angeles’ staff has a team ERA just under 8.00 with a depressing 31-to-43 walk-to-strikeout ratio. The bats haven’t made much of their opportunities either. The Dodgers are batting a respectable .283 over the past week but scored only 24 runs.

          Pick: Diamondbacks +106

Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals: (+146, 8 ½)

Houston ace Roy Oswalt has had more than a week off between starts after leaving the team this week to be present for the birth of his second daughter.

Oswalt threw a gem in his latest start, putting in seven innings and giving up only one unearned run against the Pirates last Friday. But Oswalt was let down by the Astros bullpen in the later innings, keeping the righty winless in September.

Over his career, Oswalt is 9-5 with a 2.92 ERA versus St. Louis, including two wins in three starts this season in which he has a collective 0.78 ERA.

          Pick: Astros -154

            HOT

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - Detroit fans can breathe easy with Justin Verlander on the mound. The Tigers need a win to keep their slim playoff chances alive and there is no better pitcher to have in this situation. The right-hander is 17-6 with a 3.70 ERA and 1.24 WHIP this season, and is 9-3 with a 3.78 ERA at Comerica Park. He's been dominant against the Kansas City Royals. Verlander is 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA in seven career starts against the Royals and the Tigers are 24-11 in their last 35 meetings.

Edgar Gonzalez (Arizona Diamondbacks) - Edgar Gonzalez has been lights out for the Diamondbacks since a loss to the San Francisco Giants on April 21. The right-hander is 7-0 since then and is 8-2 with a 4.61 ERA and 1.25 WHIP overall this season. Gonzalez is 5-1 at Chase Field with a 5.47 ERA and 1.31 WHIP and has allowed over one earned run in just two of his last seven starts. Oddsmakers list the Diamondbacks as +106 home underdogs against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

            COLD

Edwin Jackson (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - Edwin Jackson has struggled at home all season and things won't get any easier tonight when Tampa Bay hosts the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander is 2-8 with a 6.71 ERA and 1.69 WHIP at Tropicana Field and allowed seven earned runs in his last start at home against the Toronto Blue Jays. Jackson is 4-15 with a lofty 5.99 ERA overall this season, and is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA and 2.20 WHIP in his last three starts. The Devil Rays are 7-20 in Jackson's last 27 starts as an underdog and are listed as +165 underdogs for tonight's game.

Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers) - The veteran right-hander is 9-13 over 29 starts this season with a 5.39 ERA and 1.63 WHIP. He is 0-2 with a 6.39 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in his last three starts. The Rangers are 2-5 in Millwood's last seven starts with four days of rest and are 2-10 in their last 12 overall. Oddsmakers list the Rangers as -151 home favorites against the Baltimore Orioles.

Total bias: Week 3 over/under picks

Jacksonville Jaguars at Denver Broncos – under 36

The Broncos lead the league in offensive yards per game (455) but they’ve tallied just three touchdowns. Running back Travis Henry hasn’t fared well against the Jags (52.7 yards a game) so second-year QB Jay Cutler will likely face some third-and-long situations.

Stat of the day: Denver is allowing just 62.5 passing yards per game. That’s not a typo. The cornerback tandem of Champ Bailey and Dre Bly must scare the bejesus out of opposing quarterbacks.

Dallas Cowboys at Chicago Bears – over 41 ½

I’m making this pick strictly because of Dallas’ offense. Putting up 45 against the New York Giants wasn’t too surprising but tallying four six-pointers against a good defensive Miami team is worth noting.

RB Marion Barber is running with reckless abandon and Tony Romo is making a strong case for a big contract extension. The Bears have a great defense but I think Dallas is likely to jump to an early lead. This may be the game that decides whether Chicago coach Lovie Smith sticks with Rex Grossman, so look for a big game from the Bears quarterback.

Tennessee Titans at New Orleans Saints – under 45 ½

I’m confident the Saints offense will break out of its mini slump, but not against Tennessee. The Titans are the champions of winning ugly. They stick around in games because of a good defense that bends without breaking.

New Orleans has been a victim of the big play, but I don’t see Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow calling for many deep balls. He’ll try his best to win the time of possession battle by running as often as possible.

                Last week's record: 3-0

                Season record: 5-1
