    Weekend Sports Preview

It’s another busy weekend for sports fans and bettors, jam-packed with plenty of NFL, college and CFL football, as well as baseball and NASCAR.

Week 3 of the NFL season kicks off on Sunday with two contests between undefeated teams when Indianapolis visits Houston (+6) and San Francisco travels to Pittsburgh (-9). Sunday’s divisional matchups include Buffalo at New England (-16.5), Miami at the Jets (-3), Carolina at Atlanta (+4) and the Giants at Washington (-3.5). Also on tap in the NFL this weekend is Arizona at Baltimore (-8), San Diego at Green Bay (+5.5), Minnesota at Kansas City (-2.5), Detroit at Philadelphia (-6.5), St. Louis at Tampa Bay (-3.5), Jacksonville at Denver (-3), Cleveland at Oakland (-3), Cincinnati at Seattle (-3) and Dallas at Chicago (-3).

On the college gridiron this weekend, nine of the Top 10 ranked teams are in action on Saturday, including a ranked battled between No. 12 South Carolina and No. 2 LSU (-16.5). The rest of the games involving Top 10 schools include East Carolina at No. 5 West Virginia (-24.5), No. 3 Florida at Mississippi (+23.5), Northwestern at No. 8 Ohio State (-22.5), No. 10 Penn State at Michigan (+3), Arizona at No. 6 California (-14.5), Rice at No. 7 Texas (-38.5), Iowa at No. 9 Wisconsin (-7.5) and Washington State at No. 1 USC (-25).

Up north, Week 13 in the CFL begins on Friday night with Calgary at Hamilton (+6.5). Saturday’s lone game sees BC visit Saskatchewan (-1). The week concludes on Sunday with a doubleheader, as Edmonton faces Montreal (-4) and Winnipeg takes on Toronto (-2.5).

On the diamond this weekend, the playoff races continue to tighten up with just over a week to go in the season. Games to keep an eye in the NL this weekend include Pittsburgh at Chicago, the Mets at Florida, Philadelphia at Washington, Milwaukee at Atlanta, the Dodgers at Arizona and Colorado at San Diego. The rest of the NL schedule includes Houston at St. Louis and Cincinnati at San Francisco.

In the American League this weekend, series with playoff implications include Oakland at Cleveland, Kansas City at Detroit, Toronto at the Yankees, Boston at Tampa Bay and Seattle at the Angels. Also on the AL schedule, the White Sox are in Minnesota and Baltimore visits Texas.

On the track this weekend, The Chase for the Nextel Cup continues at Dover International Speedway with the Dodge Dealers 400. Clint Bowyer started The Chase with a win at New Hampshire last weekend, but he’s an 8/1 underdog at Dover. The favorite at Dover is Jeff Gordon at 3/1, while Martin Truex Jr. - who won at Dover earlier this season - comes in at 15/1.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts for the first fall Friday

        13) Mets blew 7-4 lead in 9th inning at Florida Thursday night are back to only 1.5 games up in NL East. Hard to explain, but for a team with 3rd-highest payroll in MLB, they're struggling to get to wire. Which leads me to my opinion that......

        12) .......managing in big market isn't an entry level job. Willie Randolph never managed before getting Mets' job, all he did was sit next to Joe Torre. Practical experience is best way to learn any job. I'm not sure Randolph is great game manager.

        11) Mets have been in first place so long, last day they were out of first was same night Rocco Baldelli played for last time this season [May 15]. 128 days and counting.

        10) Nebraska threw 95 passes in its last two games; think the Cornhuskers have ever thrown 95 times in two games before?

        9) Classy Notre Dame won't release Demetrius Jones from a scholarship, after the kid transferred to Northern Illinois, so the kid will have to pay his own way to school this year. Big of such a self-righteous institution as Notre Dame-- they bury the kid on the bench, then cry foul when he transfers. Great.

        8) Carlos Pena has more home runs than the first basemen for Boston and Bronx combined this season, but if Greg Norton hadn't gotten hurt in spring training, Pena would have started this season in the minor leagues.

        7) Colorado's Matt Holliday has 11 homers in his last dozen games, but because he plays out west, no one cares. They'll care if he ever becomes a free agent.

        6) St Louis Cardinals are giving away 25,000 Tony Larussa bobbleheads this weekend; of all the bobbleheads I've seen, this one looks the most like the guy. Very good likeness.

        5) They built the Orange Bowl in Miami for $347,000 back in 1937; it hosted five Super Bowls, including two of first three in the late 60's. Miami Hurricane home games won't seem the same at Dolphins Stadium.

        4) They drew 31,986 for a high school football game in Texas last weekend. There are D-I college teams who don't draw as many fans for their home games.

        3) If I ran major league baseball, and lord knows I should, the batting helmets would all be shiny and clean. The junk that Biggio and Guerrero, amongst others have on their helmets is disgusting. Don't have a clean helmet, you can't bat.

        2) #125 on the PGA Tour money list is Steve Allan, who has earned $568,069 this season; #126 is Bill Haas, with $559,760. Davis Love has earned over $1M this season, and he is 80th on the money list. Seriously.

        1) Its a good day to be former BC/Ohio State hoop coach Jim O'Brien, who won $2.4M from the Buckeyes, in his wrongful termination suit. Interesting to see if he coaches again.

                      Oklahoma (4) at Tulsa

The Sooners' season of domination continued last week with a 54-3 rout of Utah State. Oklahoma was able to cover the huge 48-point spread in the win, making them 3-0 ATS on the season. It’s not that hard to cover though, when you’re outscoring your opponents 184-26. Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford had another solid game with 255 passing yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Running backs Allen Patrick and DeMarco Murray both hit the 100-yard rushing mark in the game, with Murray almost doing it in one carry. Murray had only four carries, but was able rack up 100 yards that included a 92-yard TD run. The receivers were led by Juaquin Iglesias with eight receptions for 123 yards and Malcolm Kelly who caught a pair of TD passes.

Tulsa became an unlikely 2-0 team last week after they upset Brigham Young 55-47 as a 6.5-point underdog. The Golden Hurricanes' quarterback Paul Smith threw for an amazing 454 yards and five touchdown passes in the victory. Wideout Brennan Marion stretched the field every time he got the ball with three receptions for 171 yards and a touchdown, while Charles Clay also caught three passes for 98 yards and three touchdowns.

The last time Tulsa and Oklahoma met up was back in 2005 when the Sooners defeated the Golden Hurricane 31-15 as a 30.5-point favorite. Oklahoma is a 23-point road favorite in Friday night’s game.

                              Friday, September 21

Calgary Stampeders at Hamilton Tiger Cats (+7 ½, 53)
                              Friday, Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m. ET

Calgary has been spanked on its two Eastern visits in 2007. It won’t happen a third time at Ivor Wynne Stadium on Friday night.

Head coach Charlie Taaffe admitted after last weekend’s loss to Winnipeg that the Ticats are back in training camp as they rebuild around new quarterback Casey Printers. Running back Jesse Lumsden and receiver Jason Armstead have been cleared to play on Friday, but there’s not much else in the way of positives. Hamilton has some nice pieces that might help the Cats win in 2008 but not beforehand.

The Ticats have played five home games this year. Excluding their freakish win over Winnipeg (when optimism briefly reigned in the Hammer), they’ve been outscored 125-43 at Ivor Wynne.

The Stampeders come to town without a loss in their last four games and their swamping of Saskatchewan last weekend represented Calgary at its highest confidence this season. Just three weeks after facing Edmonton in the battle to avoid last place in the West, the Stamps find themselves in the running for a first-week bye in the postseason.

                              Pick: Stampeders -7 ½

                              Saturday, September 22

BC Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (Pick, 53)
                              Saturday, Sept. 22, 7 p.m. ET

The Roughriders haven’t delivered a payday since Week 7 and fell out of first place in the West with their embarrassing loss in Calgary last weekend. The Lions, in the meantime, reclaimed their Western throne against Toronto despite the continued absence of their top quarterbacks.

It sets up a showdown in Regina, where the Leos beat the Riders 42-12 as 3-point underdogs in Week 3. Saskatchewan went on a defensive tear immediately after that loss but has recently reverted to sieve-like ways on ‘D’.

The Lions will look to duplicate Calgary’s success on the ground on Saturday. BC has scored two lopsided wins with Jarious Jackson starting at quarterback, both due to huge efforts from the O-line and running backs. Jackson starts again on Saturday, but if the Lions find themselves down and needing to mount an aerial attack, expect a healthy Buck Pierce to re-enter the scene.

BC is back to its ball-hawking ways, forcing seven Toronto turnovers last week. They caused six in their last visit to Saskatchewan. They took a league-leading turnover ratio all the way to the Grey Cup last year and could continue to improve their league-leading 2007 ratio against a shaken Riders team on Saturday.

                              Pick: Lions, pick

                              Sunday, September 23

Edmonton Eskimos at Montreal Alouettes (-4, 53)
                              Sunday, Sept. 23, 1 p.m. ET

Ricky Ray found Jason Tucker deep over the middle on Edmonton’s first play last week, establishing a vertical passing game that threw the visiting Alouettes for a loop. The Eskies scored 16 points in the first five minutes and the game was essentially over at that point.

The same teams have a replay in Montreal this week, Edmonton’s first trip east of the Prairies this season. It could be a tough one for them, considering that the Als have won each of their last three home games by at least a dozen points. That includes solid wins over Calgary and BC, both of whom are well ahead of Edmonton in the West Division standings.

Last week’s win doesn’t mean Edmonton has solved its problems. The Eskimos lost their preceding three games and the fact that they’re re-jigging their roster in such a fashion midway through the season is an admission of weaknesses throughout the lineup.

Edmonton’s last three road games have all played over the total with ease, averaging 66 combined points per game in the process.

                              Pick: Over 53

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argonauts (-3, 49 ½)
                              Sunday, Sept. 23, 4 p.m. ET

Will he or won’t he? Winnipeg quarterback Kevin Glenn would definitely suit up on Sunday if it was a playoff game, but the knee strain he suffered last week in Hamilton raises questions about his availability at the Rogers Centre. Do the Bombers, leading the East Division by three points, dare risk playing a slightly-hobbled Glenn?

If Glenn can’t go, Ryan Dinwiddie steps into the breach against the stingiest defense in the East (that would be Toronto’s, despite last week’s gong show in BC Place).

Dinwiddie’s appearance in the pocket would virtually guarantee an under – Toronto is first and Winnipeg tied for second in the CFL for most games playing under the total this year. Their only previous meeting in 2007 was a 15-13 Winnipeg win, one of eight games the Argos have played this season in which fewer than 49 points were scored.

Even if Glenn plays on Sunday, Winnipeg’s defense could play well enough to keep the final score low. The Boatmen have scored 30 points or more only once this season against someone other than Hamilton.

                              Pick: Under 49 ½

                              Last week: 1-3

                              Year to date: 19-25
