    Six-pack for Thursday

-- Hairston hit walk-off homer for Padres in bottom of 9th to give San Diego dramatic 5-3 win, a big blow to Phillies, who lost 2-1 in St Louis, wasting good start by Moyer.

-- Red Sox lost 6-1 in Toronto, as their lead in AL East has shrunk to 1.5 games. This isn't as important, since both the Red Sox and Bronx will make playoffs.

-- Cubs won, Brewers lost, Chicago is back atop NL Central.

-- Mets' lead is back up to 2.5 games after they won 8-4 in Washington; Pelfrey won his third straight start.

-- Brad Hawpe homered in bottom of 8th as Rockies got by Dodgers again, 6-5; Colorado is still in Wild Card hunt.

-- Indians' magic number is down to 3 after they swept the Tigers out of playoff contention this week.

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

      13) If you like college football, there is a four-hour show on ESPNU every Tuesday that is worth watching; it has lot of press conferences from coaches, then commentary by former Georgia coach Jim Donnan and others. Interesting show.

      12) In three games so far, Notre Dame has run combined total of 176 offensive plays for 344 yards, no touchdowns. This is from a coach who promises to his players that they will have "a schematic advantage" playing for Weis. Yeah, right, OK.

      11) Why is Wisconsin ranked in the top 25? They were losing at UNLV in last 5:00, and tied at the half with Citadel. This is a top 25 team? I think not.

      10) Part of the Patriots’ coaching video that got Mr Belichick in trouble wound up on FOX’ pregame show Sunday, and the NFL wants to know how/why. This issue just won’t go away.

      9) Just because the hideous FedEx Cup has been awarded doesn’t mean the PGA Tour is done for the year; the pros are out at Turning Stone this week, 90 miles west of America’s 2nd-favorite city, for a tourney. Fred Funk, John Daly are the headliners teeing it up Thursday.

      8) Just think, Daly in a tournament at a casino; he could win the golf tourney and lose money for the weekend. Also in the field is Parker McLachlin, who looks a lot like Danny Noonan in the film classic Caddyshack..

      7) Here’s what Red Sox have gotten for their investment on JD Drew ($14M) this season: 9 HR, 53 RBI, .261 BA, a decent .366 OB%. 74 walks, 95 K’s, 3 steals. Nothing Jacoby Ellsbury couldn’t do.

      6) Here’s what Red Sox got for their $12M (counting salary and posting fee) investment on Daisuke Matsuzaka this year: 14-12, 4.41, 23 homers allowed, 1.34 WHIP. Not bad, but not worth the money.

Congrats on being the latest team scammed by Scott Boras.

      5) Barack Obama’s wife is the sister of Brown’s basketball coach, Craig Robinson.

      4) You know Rose Bowl people are praying Michigan doesn’t rebound and win the Big 11; imagine a Rose Bowl team that lost to a I-AA school?

      3) Devil Rays shut down James Shields for last ten days of season, for no reason other than they think the 215 innings he tossed this season are enough. He isn’t hurt, he isn’t real happy, and he was supposed to pitch against Bronx Tuesday night. Somehow, the Red Sox might not like this either.

      2) Why do sacks still count against rushing yards in college football stats? We can put a man on the moon, and we can’t fix this situation? It can’t be that difficult.

      1) Imagine if the Philly newspapers published what candy Donovan McNabb handed out to trick-or-treaters who came to his home on Halloween? This actually happened to John Elway in Denver. Quarterbacks get scrutinized. An awful lot.

Memo to Mr McNabb; It is mostly the nature of the position, and the nature of the city you play in. You make a fortune to play football; deal with it. Leave the race card in the deck.

          Dunkel Index

          Week 4

          Texas A&M at Miami (FL)
The Aggies hit the road looking for their first 4-0 start since the early 1940s. Dennis Franchione's team had its ups and downs last season, but playing away from home was a strength as A&M went a perfect 5-0 during the regular season. Meanwhile the Hurricanes have struggled in big games as they are just 1-7 in their last eight against ranked opponents and 9-8 in their last 17 overall. Randy Shannon is trying to get the program back to where it once was, but a 51-13 loss two weeks ago to Oklahoma shows they still have a ways to go. The Aggies come in with one of the best one-two punches in the country with Jorvorskie Lane (7 TDs) and Mike Goodson (247 yards) in the backfield. They should have their opportunities against a Miami defense that allowed lower-ranked Florida International to run for 159 yards last weekend. And the Miami offense, which is already on its second QB, has averaged less than half the points than A&M has scored. The Aggies look like a good underdog pick (+3) according to Dunkel, which has Texas A&M favored straight up by 7. Dunkel Pick: Texas A&M (+3). Here are all of this week's picks.

                    College Football – Thursday Match-up

                    NCAAF

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday night lights: Texas A&M at Miami
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The matchup: Texas A&M Aggies at Miami Hurricanes

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. ET from the Orange Bowl

The line: Miami -2 ½, total 48 points

The forecast: South Florida will likely be swept by scattered showers on Thursday night with a 50 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms as well. There won’t be much in the way of wind and the temperature will be about 80 degrees at kickoff, dropping slightly through the game.

                    Key injuries

Texas A&M: Starting fullback Chris Alexander will be back on the field after missing A&M’s last game against Louisiana-Monroe.

Miami: The Hurricanes defense, which already lost linebackers Glenn Cook and Romeo Davis in the summer, will likely be without safety Lovon Ponder on Thursday night as well. Backup guard Orlando Franklin is questionable after suffering a leg injury against Florida Atlantic last Saturday.

Three reasons why Texas A&M can cover

                    1. The Aggies don’t let go of the ball: Texas A&M led the entire nation in time of possession last year and tied for second in fewest turnovers. With all of the key pieces in their loaded backfield back in 2007, the Aggies can count on more of the same ball-control game.

                    2. Red-zone efficiency: The Aggies also led the nation by scoring in all 20 possessions within the red zone. Texas A&M’s quality of opponents in the first three weeks has been a little lacking, but 270-pound Jovorskie Lane can score against anyone, especially with the push A&M’s line provides. Quarterback Stephen McGee and tailback Mike Goodson are excellent foils in the Aggies’ option attack.

                    3. The Big 12 has already asserted itself against the Canes: Miami was embarrassed 51-13 by Oklahoma less than two weeks ago, a game in which the Hurricanes were outgained 411 yards to 139. Texas A&M visited the Sooners less than a year ago and lost 17-16, outgaining Oklahoma in the process and covering the spread as 2 ½-point underdogs.

Three reasons why Miami can cover

                    1. Miami should be able to move the ball: The fact that the Aggies let Fresno State score 29 second-half points at Kyle Field two weeks ago is disconcerting and the 27-7 halftime score against Louisiana-Monroe last Saturday hid the fact that the Warhawks had gained 210 yards of offense by that point. Javarris James and Graig Cooper are the best backs A&M have faced since Marshawn Lynch in last winter’s Holiday Bowl, a game the Aggies lost 45-10.

                    2. Hurricanes finally going vertical: Quarterback Kyle Wright completed only 10 passes against Florida International last Saturday, but they went for 224 yards. Wright’s 80-yard strike to Lance Leggett was the Canes’ first real success in 2007 at opening the passing game up and Wright regularly hooked up with Darnell Jenkins downfield as well. No one would appreciate an improved passing game more than James and Cooper, who the Sooners ganged up on in Norman two weeks ago.

                    3. Texas A&M doesn’t travel well against big schools: Since Dennis Franchione took over at A&M in 2003, the Aggies have faced six non-conference BCS schools away from College Station. They’re 1-5 straight-up in those games and 0-6 against the spread. Texas A&M’s sole win among the half-dozen games was a 28-24 squeaker over Army in 2006, a neutral-site game in which Texas A&M was a 28-point favorite.

                    Cool stat of the day

The Palm Beach Post reports that the Hurricanes, going back to the 2005 Peach Bowl, have lost seven of eight games against ranked opponents. Six of those eight games came against teams ranked 11-25, as the Aggies are going into Thursday night’s game.

On the plus side, the only win in the bunch came in the Canes’ last home game against a ranked foe, a 17-14 triumph over Boston College in another Thursday night game last November. Miami covered as a 3-point home underdog.

                    Key quote

“I love playing on the road because I'm an underdog type of guy,” senior offensive guard Kirk Elder told Texas A&M’s The Battalion.

“There's nothing greater than walking into a stadium and having 50,000 people cussing your name. Nothing like walking into a stadium and having an 8-year-old kid flip you off.”

                    Pick: Aggies +2 ½

                      College Football Gameday

A pair of Top 25 teams get the college football week started early when No. 20 Texas A&M takes on Miami on Thursday, and No. 4 Oklahoma visits Tulsa on Friday.

                      Thursday

                      Texas A&M (20) at Miami

The Aggies moved up in the Top 25 after improving to 3-0 last week with a 54-14 drubbing of Louisiana-Monroe as a 22.5-point favorite. Texas A&M fans shouldn’t get too excited just yet though. The Aggies may be undefeated but they haven’t exactly been knocking off college football’s elite. Along with their win over Louisiana-Monroe, the Aggies have also defeated Montana State 38-7 and they edged Fresno State 47-45 as a 17.5-point favorite. Last week versus Louisiana-Monroe, quarterback Stephen McGee had an up-and-down game, completing only 19-of-33 passes for 237 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The running game carried the offense in the win as Jerrod Johnson and Jorvoskie Lane each had a pair of rushing touchdowns, while Mike Goodson rumbled for 133 yards on only 11 carries with a touchdown.

The Hurricanes suffered their first defeat of the season two weeks ago when they were blown out by Oklahoma 51-13 as 10.5-point underdogs. Miami was able to rebound last week with a 23-9 victory over Florida International as a 32.5-point favorite. Kyle Wright completed 10-of-19 passes for 224 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in the win. Javaris James rushed for 92 yards on 19 carries and Craig Cooper had 11 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown. Darnell Jenkins led all receivers with five receptions for 108 yards, but it was Lance Leggett who had the most important catch of the night. Leggett only hauled in one pass the entire game, but it was a big one as it went for 80 yards and a touchdown.

This is the first meeting between the Aggies and the Hurricanes, and Miami has been pegged as a 2.5-point favorite at home.

                      Friday

                      Oklahoma (4) at Tulsa

The Sooners' season of domination continued last week with a 54-3 rout of Utah State. Oklahoma was able to cover the huge 48-point spread in the win, making them 3-0 ATS on the season. It’s not that hard to cover though, when you’re outscoring your opponents 184-26. Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford had another solid game with 255 passing yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Running backs Allen Patrick and DeMarco Murray both hit the 100-yard rushing mark in the game, with Murray almost doing it in one carry. Murray had only four carries, but was able rack up 100 yards that included a 92-yard TD run. The receivers were led by Juaquin Iglesias with eight receptions for 123 yards and Malcolm Kelly who caught a pair of TD passes.

Tulsa became an unlikely 2-0 team last week after they upset Brigham Young 55-47 as a 6.5-point underdog. The Golden Hurricanes' quarterback Paul Smith threw for an amazing 454 yards and five touchdown passes in the victory. Wideout Brennan Marion stretched the field every time he got the ball with three receptions for 171 yards and a touchdown, while Charles Clay also caught three passes for 98 yards and three touchdowns.

The last time Tulsa and Oklahoma met up was back in 2005 when the Sooners defeated the Golden Hurricane 31-15 as a 30.5-point favorite. Oklahoma is a 23-point road favorite in Friday night’s game.

                          Dunkel Index

                          San Francisco at Pittsburgh
The 49ers are hoping for their first 3-0 start since 1998, but face a difficult road through Pittsburgh. New coach Mike Tomlin has Pittsburgh looking more like the Super Bowl team of two years ago. The Steelers have allowed just 10 points this season -- 10 fewer than any other team in the league. Overall Pittsburgh is ranked third in total defense while holding opponents to just 222.0 yards per game. And the offense has been just as good, ranking in the top five in scoring (60 points) and rushing (195.0 yards per game). Willie Parker ranks third in the league in rushing (235 yards), including 126 against the Chiefs last weekend that pushed the Steelers' record to 14-1 when he tops the century mark. Keying on Parker hasn't helped, either, as QB Ben Roethlisberger has picked up five TD passes against only one INT, a reversal from last year's zero-TD, five-INT start. The Niners are fortunate to be 2-0 after close wins over Arizona and St. Louis in which the offense has struggled. That is likely to catch up to them on Sunday and makes the Steelers a good pick (-9) to cover according to Dunkel, which has Pittsburgh favored by 16. Dunkel Pick: Pittsburgh (-9). Here are all of this week's picks.
