    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Mets blew another 4-0 lead, lost again at RFK, their fifth loss in row, as their lead is now just 1.5 games in NL East.

-- Phillies used hit by Barajas in 14th inning to beat Cards, winning game they used 25 players, eight pitchers in.

-- St Louis used 28 players, 11 pitchers; two starters lasted total of just five innings. Myers blew save in 10th for Phils.

-- Hamels was on 75-pitch limit in his return from DL, but they pinch-hit for him after three innings, 54 pitches.

-- Imagine a Tuesday night in second-to-last week of year for also-ran Cardinals, and 42,170 fans show up? Wow.

-- Game started at 8:00 in east, ended at 1:15am, after all the west coast games had already finished. Lot of baseball.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our first NFL List of 13............

This is our initial List of 13, ranking NFL teams; the list will change radically week-to-week, especially in the first half of the season. Feel free to make your own list—when you get down to the cut for #13, the choices get a little difficult.

10 teams are 0-2. With our lack of patience in today’s society, coaches are already being fired in the media. Could we wait until baseball season ends to fire football coaches (except for Lloyd Carr)?

      13) 49ers—Two division wins by total of four points. Would be higher, had they gained 200 yards in either game.

      12) Lions—Beat Raiders/Vikings by total of eight points, but 2-0 is 2-0, especially in the Millen Era.

      11) Titans—Won at Jacksonville, running for 282 yards, lost 22-20 to the Colts. Lets see #12 or 13 on this list do either one of those things.

      10) Redskins—Allowed one TD in two games, but offense is still shaky.

      9) Broncos—Beat Buffalo by a point, Raiders in OT; not sold on Cutler, but they do have a knack for getting production out of obscure RBs.

      8) Texans—Addition of Schaub, Green not unlike when Rams added Trent Green and Faulk before ’99 season. Scoring 34 unanswered points at Carolina was impressive.

      7) Bears— 14-3 loss at San Diego was more impressive than their win over Chiefs. Why would anyone punt the football to Hester? He is, by far, their best offensive weapon.

      6) Packers—Move way up in class this week, as Bolts will stagger into Lambeau. For right now, we still think Chargers are the better team…….

      5) Chargers-- ……but they need to start playing better. Had brutal opening pair of games, now that is behind them. Time to unleash LT.

      4) Cowboys— Scored 82 points in two games, with 55 of the 82 in second half. QB Romo can move, and uses all his many weapons. Somewhere, O.A. (Bum) Phillips is smiling.

      3) Steelers— Lose ugly throwback uniforms. Giants could have had Big Ben without trading a draft pick. Whoops.

      2) Patriots— Belichick probably thinks OJ misinterpreted the Nevada statute on assault, kidnapping and armed robbery. His team is playing with chip on its shoulder.

      1) Colts—Defending champs, best until someone beats them.

                1. The Aggies don’t let go of the ball: Texas A&M led the entire nation in time of possession last year and tied for second in fewest turnovers. With all of the key pieces in their loaded backfield back in 2007, the Aggies can count on more of the same ball-control game.

                2. Red-zone efficiency: The Aggies also led the nation by scoring in all 20 possessions within the red zone. Texas A&M’s quality of opponents in the first three weeks has been a little lacking, but 270-pound Jovorskie Lane can score against anyone, especially with the push A&M’s line provides. Quarterback Stephen McGee and tailback Mike Goodson are excellent foils in the Aggies’ option attack.

                3. The Big 12 has already asserted itself against the Canes: Miami was embarrassed 51-13 by Oklahoma less than two weeks ago, a game in which the Hurricanes were outgained 411 yards to 139. Texas A&M visited the Sooners less than a year ago and lost 17-16, outgaining Oklahoma in the process and covering the spread as 2 ½-point underdogs.

Three reasons why Miami can cover

                1. Miami should be able to move the ball: The fact that the Aggies let Fresno State score 29 second-half points at Kyle Field two weeks ago is disconcerting and the 27-7 halftime score against Louisiana-Monroe last Saturday hid the fact that the Warhawks had gained 210 yards of offense by that point. Javarris James and Graig Cooper are the best backs A&M have faced since Marshawn Lynch in last winter’s Holiday Bowl, a game the Aggies lost 45-10.

                2. Hurricanes finally going vertical: Quarterback Kyle Wright completed only 10 passes against Florida International last Saturday, but they went for 224 yards. Wright’s 80-yard strike to Lance Leggett was the Canes’ first real success in 2007 at opening the passing game up and Wright regularly hooked up with Darnell Jenkins downfield as well. No one would appreciate an improved passing game more than James and Cooper, who the Sooners ganged up on in Norman two weeks ago.

                3. Texas A&M doesn’t travel well against big schools: Since Dennis Franchione took over at A&M in 2003, the Aggies have faced six non-conference BCS schools away from College Station. They’re 1-5 straight-up in those games and 0-6 against the spread. Texas A&M’s sole win among the half-dozen games was a 28-24 squeaker over Army in 2006, a neutral-site game in which Texas A&M was a 28-point favorite.

                Cool stat of the day

The Palm Beach Post reports that the Hurricanes, going back to the 2005 Peach Bowl, have lost seven of eight games against ranked opponents. Six of those eight games came against teams ranked 11-25, as the Aggies are going into Thursday night’s game.

On the plus side, the only win in the bunch came in the Canes’ last home game against a ranked foe, a 17-14 triumph over Boston College in another Thursday night game last November. Miami covered as a 3-point home underdog.

                Key quote

“I love playing on the road because I'm an underdog type of guy,” senior offensive guard Kirk Elder told Texas A&M’s The Battalion.

“There's nothing greater than walking into a stadium and having 50,000 people cussing your name. Nothing like walking into a stadium and having an 8-year-old kid flip you off.”

                Pick: Aggies +2 ½

This week’s MLS preview and picks

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Galaxy at Real Salt Lake (+180, draw +220, +180)
                        Wednesday, Sept. 19, 9 p.m. ET

In truth, the Galaxy’s season ended weeks ago in the midst of their five-game losing streak. The 3-1 loss at the hands of Houston Dynamo on Sunday was just another nail in the coffin. But they can still play for pride, and the Galaxy will see the trip to Salt Lake City as a good chance at their first away win of the season.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Real Salt Lake are one of the most improved teams in the league. The club signed three top young Argentineans prospects last month and immediately picked up three wins – against Houston, Kansas and Los Angeles.

Most impressive about Real is their never-say-die spirit. Much like the Galaxy, their chances of making the playoffs are remote, but they battle hard in every game and haven't been blown out by any opponent since a 4-0 loss to Chivas back in April.

The Galaxy cannot say the same. Their second-half performance against Houston on Sunday was nothing short of a disgrace and they have now conceded three goals or more in five of their last eight games.

Real managed an away win in L.A. just a few weeks ago, and it can do the double with a home win on Wednesday.

                        Pick: Real Salt Lake +125

Chicago Fire at FC Dallas (+300, draw +220, -120)
                        Thursday, Sept. 20, 8 p.m. ET

FC Dallas were leaders in the Western Division several times this season, but a recent dip in form has seen them drop to third place. They are still in good shape to make the playoffs but need to return to winning ways against Chicago on Thursday.

Dallas has dropped three of its last four league games mainly because of the defensive frailty that has hampered its progress all season. The Texans have conceded 35 times in 25 games this year, with eight of those goals coming in their last three outings.

While the Dallas attack is one of the league’s most experienced – boasting players like Denilson and Kenny Cooper – its defense is one of the least experienced.

The oldest defender Dallas had on the field in Sunday’s 4-2 loss against New England was 25. Only one of the team's backs had played in MLS for more than two seasons.

That inexperience could once again cost Dallas points when it faces a Chicago side with one of the hottest attacks in the league. The Fire have won four of their last eight games (with two ties) and their new-look offense featuring Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Paolo Wanchope and Chad Barrett is capable of banging goals in the goals against the Texans.

                        Pick: Chicago Fire +300

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          MLS Preview

Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007 (All Times Eastern)

Los Angeles (4-13-5) at Real Salt Lake (4-13-7), 9 p.m.

Salt Lake City, UT - The Los Angeles Galaxy continue their whirl-wind tour of Major League Soccer cities Wednesday when they play Real Salt Lake at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The match will be the Galaxy's 11th in league play since Aug. 5, with the MLS schedule maker hoping to give every market in the country a chance to see David Beckham and the his L.A. teammates. That hasn't been the case as the English superstar has been out with a knee injury since the SuperLiga final on Aug. 29, as well as a host of other Galaxy players being in and out of the lineup with various injuries.

"We have a game on Wednesday. I know that. It's on the schedule. We have to go and obviously get a win," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said after his team's 3-1 loss Sunday to Houston.

Yallop is just trying to get through his team's final eight games, with realistic chances of making the playoffs slipping away loss by loss. The Galaxy have lost eight of their last nine league fixtures and are currently last in the league with just 17 points.

"Talk about a long year - I keep saying that, but we are so naive in certain spots," Yallop said of his team giving up two goals on suspect plays to Houston. "We are so naive with our fight and our will to do better. We just expect that another goal has gone in and guys just don't take responsibility. A lot of times, you have to make sure that you feel like something is your fault, and a lot of guys don't. They think that the players think that maybe they could have done in a situation, but they don't take responsibility and that's difficult."

"I've worked with Frank for the (Canadian) national team and in San Jose," Houston head coach Dominic Kinnear said. "He just has to keep his head up. I feel for him because I know the quality of coach he is and he doesn't deserve to get all these losses."

Real Salt Lake isn't in much better shape, just two points clear of the Galaxy in the Western table, but have been showing signs of life after some late season roster moves.

They are coming off a 0-0 tie at Toronto FC, but feel good after forward Fabian Espindola received a red card in the first half of the contest and the team was still hung on for the point on the road.

"We put ourselves in a tough position getting that red card in the first half and we were 60 minutes down a man, but that said we showed a lot of character a lot of fight, and we got out of here with a result," RSL forward Alecko Eskandarian said.

TFC actually peppered goalkeeper Nick Rimando with a team record in shots and shots on goal in an effort to break out of their league-record goalless streak, but the veteran goalkeeper stopped all shots in one of his more impressive performances of the season.

"That's what happens when you go a man down," Rimando said of the number of shots he faced. "You've got to expect that it's going to be a battle and that's what it was. They came after us, you know their fans are amazing, they gave them a little boost and they had their chances but we fought and we came out with a point, on an away game, playing here in Toronto and that's big for us."

"They were knocking on the door all day, and searching for that elusive goal," RSL defender Eddie Pope said. "And, went down a man - our backs were against the wall and they just came at us. Certainly we could have crumbled at some point and given up a goal at some point, but we held together, stuck together we were able to fight, scratch ... all that stuff and get out of here with a point."

That is exactly what L.A. will be trying to do Wednesday in an effort to climb out of the Western basement.

After Wednesday's match, the Galaxy host FC Dallas on Sunday while Real Salt lake hosts Colorado a day earlier.
