    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Phillies led 11-0 in St Louis, with Mets already having lost in Washington, and almost lost, hanging on for a 13-11 win that brings them to within 2.5 games of Mets in NL East.

-- Russell Branyan, who was 2-9 with two homers earlier in season for Phillies, took a called third strike to end game; to be honest, he looked less than enthusiastic about swinging having taken two really close two-strike pitches earlier.

-- Frank Thomas tied for 18th on all-time home run list, after he hit three taters in a 6-1 win over the slumping Red Sox.

-- Tigers couldn't hold onto 5-2 lead, lost in Cleveland, as their playoff chances took a major hit.

-- Milwaukee won in Houston, Cubs scored three runs in ninth to beat the Reds, so Chicago is still a game up in NL Central. Cincinnati, by the way, currently has 17 pitchers on its roster, including six lefties in the bullpen.

-- In nine years as Eagle coach, Andy Reid has a combined record of 7-11 in Weeks 1 and 2, 81-45 in all other games.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13.....

This list, for now, isn't a ranking of top 13 teams; so what this is is really recognition of things that happened over weekend. Keep that in mind before you call me an idiot, then feel free to call me one...........we're getting closer to this being a ranking.

      13) Duke-- Good news: Won for first time in 23 games, which was timely, since their last eight opponents played in bowls last season. More good news: Hoop practice in four weeks.

      12) Alabama-- Great win vs Arkansas, after blowing big lead in second half. A 3-0 start, with Dawgs coming to town this week, the natives are happy, for now . Wilson is a good QB.

      11) Clemson-- Why are they playing Furman? Wouldn't trip to Hawai'i help recruiting? So what if they lost. Its about time teams had some onions when making their schedule.

      10) Kentucky-- Ranked for first time since '84, behind a senior QB and the coach who built Oregon's program, and was with Falcons as defensive coordinator when they won NFC in '98.

      9) South Carolina-- Have covered nine of ten on road since a coach named Spurrier took over. Interesting test this week in Baton Rouge. Spurrier +16.5 points? Hmmmmm

      8) Boston College-- Already 3-0 in ACC, with win at Georgia Tech impressive. Ryan is one of three best QBs in US, along with Brohm and Woodson. BC had tough early schedule.

      7) Texas-- Credit to Mack Brown for going to Orlando for the first game in Central Florida's new stadium; credit to Texas in coming from behind in fourth quarter to win, but lets face it, Longhorns have looked vulnerable so far this season.

      6) Penn State-- I have two friends named Joe who go to Penn State home games; they both rave about Lions. This week at Michigan good chance for senior QB Morelli to shine, since Wolverines won their last eight games vs Penn State.

      5) West Virginia-- Powerful running game wears opponents down in second half. Biggest question is probably can they pass the ball, if the time comes when they have to?

      4) Florida-- Gators go for kill when calling plays; Tebow was impressive as passer vs Tennessee, making plays on run, but Florida is 0-7 against spread as road favorite under Meyer.

      3) USC-- Rushing yardage in Lincoln: Trojans 313, Nebraska 31. Game was 42-10 at one point, so final score bit misleading. Their road schedule will be very difficult to sweep, though.

      2) Oklahoma-- Team with freshman QB figures to improve as season goes on. Struggles of rest of Big 12 are going to hurt Sooners when BCS standings come out.

      1) LSU-- Beat 2-1 Miss State 45-0 in Starkville, then won 48-7 against Virginia Tech. Spurrier comes to town this week- this will be LSU's toughest test yet. The win in Starkville looks lot better after Bulldogs won at Auburn Saturday.

            Tuesday’s MLB betting notes

            Sox adjust to Manny absence

The Boston Red Sox have been without slugger Manny Ramirez for 19 consecutive games ahead of Tuesday’s action and his absence has led to a shift in the way they set up their offense.

"We've been a little bit different team," Sox manager Terry Francona told reporters ahead of Sunday’s loss to the Yankees.

"With Jacoby Ellsbury out there, we have three outfielders that go get the ball pretty well. We run the bases. We lose the impact of Manny's bat, so we've had to play a little bit different baseball," he added.

The Sox have held their own since Ramirez went down with a strained oblique on August 28, posting a 10-8 record through Monday. The outfielder was going through a quiet season by his high standards, posting a .292 average with 20 homers and 86 RBIs.

There’s a slim chance that Ramirez could return to the Boston lineup for Tuesday’s game at Toronto.

            Morneau regrets derby

Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau recently blamed his poor second-half performance on his participation in the Home Run Derby during the All-Star break. Morneau batted .295 with 24 homers before the break, but has an average of .254 with just six homers since then.

Morneau says the rigors of the Derby affected his swing and that he will not compete in the event again. "I don't want to make it sound like an excuse, but I just haven't felt the same since then," he told the Minnesota Post-Bulletin this week. The Canadian-born star made it to the fourth round of the competition, hitting four homers.

His manager agrees that the event had an adverse effect on his slugger's season.

"I was not a big proponent of it anyway," Ron Gardenhire said of the contest on MLB.com. "We never tell players you can't do this or you can't do that. The league asked him to do it, and he said he'd like to do it.

"I've never been fond of that kind of thing. I enjoy watching it, but it's something that he chose to do, and if he chooses not to do it anymore, that'd be fine," added Gardenhire.

Morneau is not the only Twins slugger to struggle since the Midsummer Classic. Minnesota’s offense is bottom of the AL in runs scored (235) since the break, and 11th in batting average (.262).

            Halos can’t get healthy

The Los Angeles Angels head into the final weeks of the season with two of their three outfielders struggling with injuries. Center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. has a sprained right ankle that will keep him sidelined for at least another week, while right fielder Vladimir Guerrero is on permanent DH duty while his right triceps heals.

"It's still a little cranky, still a little stiff," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Guerrero’s inflamed triceps on MLB.com. "I think he threw enough to know there's still a ways to go. No use pushing it."

"He's got a little more bounce in his step, which is encouraging," Scioscia added when asked about Matthews Jr. "I think he's relieved. It's too early to say he's turned the corner, but it's moving in the right direction. It should be shorter term as opposed to what the back end of an ankle sprain can be."

The only fit member of L.A.’s outfield trio is Garret Anderson, who is batting .298 with 16 homers and 77 RBIs despite missing 46 games because of a hip flexor injury earlier this season.

The Angels are 8 ½ games up in the AL West and play the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Tuesday.

L.A.'s Little close to conceding division

The National League West seems to have become a two-horse race after the third-place L.A. Dodgers fell 4 ½ games behind top spot this weekend. If the division-leading Diamondbacks can simply split their last 12 games, the chasing Dodgers would have to put together an 11-2 run to tie them.

That math has Grady Little all but conceding defeat.

"It's not out of the question, but that's tough ground to make up even though we're playing the Diamondbacks three more times in Arizona next weekend," the Dodgers boss told MLB.com after Sunday’s loss to the D-Backs.

"We're chasing two teams right now, but our No. 1 focus is getting to postseason play."

Los Angeles is 2 ½ back from San Diego, who are second in the division. The Dodgers are also 2 ½ back in the NL wild card. They finish out the season with series against Colorado, Arizona and San Francisco.

              Baseball – Gameday

              MLB

              Tuesday, September 18

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Gameday
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Tuesday’s MLB Gameday

Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers will travel to Cleveland to take on the first-place Indians on Tuesday in one of the night's key matchups. Here is your MLB Gameday . . .

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians, 7:05pm ET
Justin Verlander (17-5, 3.47 ERA) vs. Jake Westbrook (5-9, 4.38 ERA)

Verlander continues to cruise through his starts for the Tigers. The righthander has now picked up a win in each of his last four outings, and he allowed just three earned runs on 23 hits over 28 2-3 innings over that span. However, Verlander was pounded by the Indians back on August 22, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits in only four innings.

Westbrook, on the other hand, hasn't added a victory to his totals since August 28, when he held the Twins to three earned runs on 10 hits over 6 2-3 innings of work. The righthander is 0-2 with a no-decision over his last three starts. Against the Tigers back on August 23 Westbrook tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing five hits on the night.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays, 7:07pm ET
              Jon Lester (4-0, 4.86 ERA) vs. A.J. Burnett (8-7, 3.42 ERA)

Lester is coming off a poor outing against the Devil Rays in which he surrendered four earned runs on eight hits in just 3 2-3 innings pitched. The lefthander had won three straight starts prior to that game, beating the D-Rays once and the Orioles twice in that span. On the season Lester is still unbeaten with a 4-0 mark, and his ERA sits at 4.86.

Burnett has given up only one earned run over eight innings in each of his past two starts, but he also had to settle for just a no-decision in both of those outings. In fact, the righthander has allowed more than one earned run only once in his past five starts - and it was the only game that he won (versus the Mariners in his start on September 2).

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Los Angeles Angels, 10:05pm ET
Jason Hammel (2-4, 6.13 ERA) vs. John Lackey (16-9, 3.21 ERA)

Hammel has pitched well for the Devil Rays lately. The righthander held the Yankees to one earned run on five hits over five innings back on September 2, limited the Blue Jays to two earned runs on five hits over six innings on September 8, and then surrendered just one earned run on five hits over six innings versus the Mariners on September 13.

Lackey is just 0-1 with two no-decisions over his past three starts, which has hurt him in his quest to get to 20 wins this year. The righthander last grabbed a victory on August 27 versus Seattle, when he tossed a complete-game shutout and allowed just seven hits. Last time out, against the O's, Lackey gave up three earned runs in seven innings.

Pittsburgh Pirates at San Diego Padres, 10:05pm ET
Tom Gorzelanny (14-7, 3.45 ERA) vs. Greg Maddux (12-10, 3.91 ERA)

Gorzelanny is quietly up to 14 wins on the season, and he's managed to lower his ERA down to a solid 3.45. The lefthander is 3-0 with two no-decisions over his past five starts, and he only gave up more than three earned runs in one of those outings. Last time out, against Milwaukee, Gorzelanny gave up two earned runs over 6 2-3 innings.

Maddux was on a roll for the Padres - until he faced the Dodgers last week. The veteran righthander gave up six earned runs on 10 hits over just 3 1-3 innings versus Los Angeles on September 13, dropping his record to 12-10 on the season. In his previous five outings Maddux had allowed just eight earned runs over 32 1-3 innings.

                THREE FOR THOMAS

Frank Thomas hit three home runs to lift Toronto over Boston 6-1 on Monday, raising his total to 512 and tying Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews for 18th on the career list. Thomas homered twice off knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, then hit his third against reliever Kyle Snyder. Thomas had three homers one other time -- hitting all of them off Wakefield at Fenway Park on Sept. 15, 1996.

                THE YANKS ARE COMING

Hideki Matsui homered to help the New York Yankees defeat Baltimore 8-5 on Monday and trim their deficit in the AL East to 3 1/2 games, their smallest deficit since before play on April 22. AL East-leading Boston lost to Toronto 6-1. The Yankees have won 10 of 12, improving to a season-best 22 games over .500. New York also increased its wild-card lead to 3 1/2 games over Detroit, which lost to Cleveland 6-5.

                METS ERRORS

The New York Mets dropped their fourth consecutive game on Monday, making four more errors in a 12-4 loss to Washington. Add in their six miscues Sunday, and the Mets set a franchise record with 10 errors over two games. They never had more than eight errors over two games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                PICKOFFS KING

Kenny Rogers picked Jason Michaels off first base in the sixth inning of Detroit's 6-5 loss to Cleveland on Monday, giving him 91 career pickoffs to tie Mark Langston for the most in the majors since the statistic started being kept in 1974.

                BIG INNING

Jermaine Dye, Danny Richar and Josh Fields homered in an 11-run fifth inning and the Chicago White Sox defeated Kansas City 11-3 on Monday. Chicago, which sent 14 men to the plate, had its biggest inning since an 11-run third at St. Louis on June 20 last year. It was the most runs in an inning off Kansas City since an 11-run first at Cleveland on Aug. 13 last year.

                IMPENETRABLE PADRES

Rookie Jack Cassel and three relievers combined on San Diego's 20th shutout on Monday -- tops in the majors and a franchise record. Cassel, making his second career start and fourth appearance, allowed eight hits over six innings in the 3-0 win over Pittsburgh.

                SPEAKING

"How about that? Maybe in Little League, but I've never seen a game end like that. That was pretty fun." -- Minnesota's Torii Hunter, after the Twins beat Texas in the ninth inning on an Ian Kinsler error. Kinsler had a 50-game errorless streak heading into play on Monday.

                SEASONS
                Sept. 18

1908 -- Bob Rhoads of the Indians pitched a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox for a 2-1 victory in Cleveland.

1930 -- New York pitcher Red Ruffing hit two home runs as the Yankees edged the St. Louis Browns 7-6 in 10 innings.

1954 -- The Cleveland Indians clinched the American League pennant with a 3-2 triumph over the Detroit Tigers.

1963 -- The New York Mets lost their last game at the Polo Grounds to the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-1, in front of a crowd of only 1,752.

1968 -- Ray Washburn threw a 2-0 no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park, one day after the Giants' Gaylord Perry tossed a no-hitter against Washburn's St. Louis Cardinals.

1984 -- The Detroit Tigers clinched the American League East Division with a 3-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, making the Tigers the fourth team in major league history to lead from start to finish. The other three teams were the 1923 New York Giants, 1927 New York Yankees and the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers.

1987 -- Detroit's Darrell Evans became the first 40-year-old player in major league history to hit 30 home runs in a season as the Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6.

1996 -- Roger Clemens equaled his own major league record, fanning 20 batters and pitching a four-hitter to lead Boston over the Detroit Tigers 4-0.

2003 -- Atlanta clinched its 12th straight division title when second-place Florida was mathematically eliminated from the NL East race after a 5-4 loss to Philadelphia. The record title streak started in 1991, when the Braves won the NL West. They moved to the East Division in 1994 and trailed Montreal by six games when the strike stopped the season in August.

2005 -- The Texas Rangers set a major league record for home runs at home when David Dellucci, Alfonso Soriano and Rod Barajas connected against Seattle in an 8-6 victory. Barajas' homer in the fourth gave Texas 150 homers at Ameriquest Field, one more than Colorado hit at Coors Field in 1996.

2006 -- Jeff Baker hit a pair of three-run homers and Garrett Atkins added six RBIs to lead Colorado to a 20-8 rout of San Francisco.

2006 -- The Los Angeles Dodgers hit four consecutive homers in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and Nomar Garciaparra's two-run homer in the 10th lifted Los Angeles to an 11-10 victory over the San Diego Padres. It was the fourth time a team hit four consecutive homers and the first since May 2, 1964, when the Minnesota Twins accomplished the feat against Kansas City in the 11th inning.

                Today's birthday: Kevin Thompson 28.

                  Tuesday, September 18

                  LA Dodgers at Colorado
In the first game of a doubleheader, the Dodgers will look for another strong performance from Chad Billingsley, who is 4-0 with a 1.64 ERA over his last five starts. Billingsley has been equally strong on the road this season, posting a 7-2 mark and 2.61 ERA. He'll face tough opposition in the Rockies Jeff Francis, who is just two wins shy of tying the team's single-season record. But Francis is coming off one of his worst outings of the season as he gave up eight runs in only 3 1/3 innings against the Phillies on Thursday. The Dodgers look like a good pick to take advantage as an underdog (+112) according to Dunkel, which has Los Angeles favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: LA Dodgers (+112). Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies: (-115, 9)

Chad Billingsley stars in Part 1 of the Dodgers-Rockies doubleheader today in Colorado.

Los Angeles’ hardest working right-hander has pitched near-perfect baseball in his past four starts. During this stretch he is 4-0 with a 1.64 ERA, adding 32 strikeouts over his past 33 innings of work.

The Dodgers, who open a seven-game road swing today, are currently four games behind the NL West lead and two games out of the wild card. Billingsley’s best efforts have come in enemy territory, where he has posted a 7-2 road record this season with an impressive 2.61 ERA away from Dodger Stadium.

                      Pick: Dodgers +107

Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics: (-135, 9 ½)

After two rough outings to start the month, Oakland’s Chad Gaudin came out in his last start and showed the familiar form that made him one half of the AL’s best pitching duos earlier in the season.

The A’s righty threw six innings and gave up three earned runs against the Texas Rangers last Thursday night.

"I felt positive toward the outing," Gaudin told reporters. "I felt I was in control. I made some good pitches when I needed to and attacked the zone. I was not working under pressure, just laboring a little bit."

Gaudin has been solid against Seattle, going 1-1 with a 3.45 ERA. He tossed a complete game against the M’s back in late July but came out on the losing end of a 4-3 score.

                      Pick: Athletics -135

Pittsburgh Pirates at San Diego Padres: (-145, 7 ½)

                      Pittsburgh’s got a secret. A dirty little, left-handed secret.

Southpaw pitcher Tom Gorzelanny is one of the best arms in the National League over the past two months, going 5-1 in his last eight starts. During his past five outings, Gorzelanny is 3-0 with a 3.34 ERA.

In addition to his 14 wins this season, Gorzelanny has been the Bucs' best arm on the road – which is something Pittsburgh needs after losing three straight on their current road swing. He is 8-3 away from home this season with a steady 3.31 road ERA.

                      Pick: Pirates +137

                        Tuesday, September 18

                        HOT

Chad Billingsley (Los Angeles Dodgers) - The Dodgers continue their campaign for the wild card when Billingsley takes the mound this afternoon for their first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies. The righty is 11-4 with a 3.14 ERA on the season and 4-0 in his last five starts. He led the Dodgers to victory in his last start, a 6-1 win over the Padres, when he gave up five hits in six innings. The Dodgers played under in four of Billingsley's last five starts. Books have set this afternoon's total at 9 ½.

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - Despite their lead in the AL Central, the Indians are in tough against the Tigers tonight. Books list Detroit as -115 road favorites behind Verlander (17-5, 3.47 ERA), who is looking for his fifth straight win both straight-up and on the moneyline. In his last four starts, the right-hander has allowed just three runs and 26 hits.

                        COLD

Carlos Silva (Minnesota Twins) - Silva has only three wins in his last 10 starts and will try to avoid back-to-back losses when the Twins host the Rangers tonight at the Metrodome. Silva has a disappointing 6.35 ERA and an 0-1 record in two starts against Texas this season. He is 11-14 with a 4.44 ERA on the season. Despite Silva's poor plate performance, books give the Twins home-park advantage as -122 favorites.

Micah Owings (Arizona Diamondbacks) - A 5-1 start to the season looked promising for the rookie but Owings has since gone 1-7 and hasn't posted in a win in a month. He allowed 19 runs in his last five starts and 12 in his last two and hasn't taken the mound since Sept. 8. The D-Backs are -149 home favorites against the Giants tonight but they've given up the cash in four of Owings' last five starts when they were favored.
