        Chicago Cubs at St. Louis
Mark Mulder's return from shoulder surgery has not been what the Cardinals were hoping for. The left-hander has been lit up in both his starts and comes in with a 12.38 ERA. In his last start against Cincinnati on Tuesday, he allowed seven runs (five earned) in just four innings of work. Mulder's problems have reflected the Cards' as they had lost nine straight before finally snapping the skid with a win in the second game of yesterday's double-header. The Cubs will go with Jason Marquis, who has been decent this year (2-1, 4.34) against his old mates. But against a struggling Mulder, those numbers look to be more than enough and make the Cubs a good pick (-113) to close out the series with a win according to Dunkel, which has Chicago favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Chicago Cubs (-113). Here are all of today's games.

            Streaking Pitchers

            Sunday, September 16

            Hot

Vincente Padilla (Texas Rangers) - Padilla has won his last three decisions for Texas and has not allowed a run over 12 innings in his two most recent. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 4.42 ERA in six starts and two relief appearances against the A's in his career. This will be his first time facing Oakland this season. Totals bettors should take note that the over is 13-3-2 in Padilla's last 18 road starts.

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) - The Padres ace will try to help the club wrap up a three-game sweep of the Giants today. Peavy is 8-1 with a 2.37 ERA over his last 10 starts and has been one of the most profitable starting pitchers as of late. Despite his success this year the right-hander is only 8-5 in 17 home starts compared to 9-1 on the road. Peavy is 9-6 with a 3.44 ERA in 19 career starts against the Giants and most likely won't have to face Barry Bonds thanks to the slugger's injured toe.

            Cold

Jarrod Washburn (Seattle Mariners) - Washburn is 0-4 with a 7.29 ERA in his last four starts and has failed to record an out past the sixth inning in all of them. The left-hander has also lost three straight starts at home by posting a 5.21 ERA. The good news for Mariners bettors is that Washburn has beaten Tampa Bay more than any other team in his career, going 10-2 with a 2.53 ERA in 14 starts against the Devil Rays. Washburn won his only start against Tampa Bay this year, allowing two runs and eight hits in a 5-2 road win on May 22.

Lenny DiNardo (Oakland Athletics) - DiNardo will try to snap a two-game losing streak today against the Texas Rangers. Last Sunday he lasted only 1 2/3 innings against the Rangers and allowed seven runs. DiNardo is 2-2 with a 3.43 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance against Texas this year. One positive for backers is that Oakland is 5-0 in DiNardo's last five home starts.

Tim Hudson (Atlanta Braves) - Hudson is 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA in four starts since winning nine straight decisions for the Braves. Home runs are starting to hurt Hudson as he has given up four of his nine homers this season in his last three starts. Braves backers should take comfort knowing that the right-hander has historically dominated the Nationals, going 4-1 with an impressive 1.29 ERA in seven starts. The Braves are 1-4 in their last five Sunday games.

Scott Olsen (Florida Marlins) - Olsen is 0-4 with a 7.39 ERA in six starts since beating the Astros on August 5, but he's received an average of just 1.6 runs of support his last five outings. If the Marlins can maintain their current scoring punch of 8.7 runs per game, Olsen may finally end his cold trend. The left-hander is 1-1 with a 6.94 ERA in two career starts against the Rockies, and 2-7 with a 6.68 ERA in 13 road starts this season. The over is 4-1 in Olsen's last five road starts.

Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox (-102, 9)

Chicago White Sox ace Mark Buehrle hasn’t recorded a win in his last six starts despite pitching near-perfect baseball in his most recent appearances.

Buehrle, who hasn’t pitched since Sept. 6, is 0-1 with an ERA just over 3.00 during his last three starts. He only has a 1-4 career mark against the Angels, but may be able to capitalize on Los Angeles' woes against lefties this season.

The Halos are batting .282 against left-handed pitchers but, according to MLB.com, have a 16-18 record against southpaws this season.

              Pick: White Sox -102

Pittsburgh Pirates at Houston Astros (-109, 9 ½)

Pittsburgh has one of the most potent offenses in the second half of the schedule, hitting .280 since the break.

In September alone, the Pirates are hitting .303 at the plate and averaging 5 ½ runs per game. The Bucs knocked in more then six scores per contest in the past six games, going 4-2 during this period.

They will also have the benefit of Paul Maholm on the hill this afternoon. The young lefty has won three straight starts against the Astros dating back to 2006 and is 3-2 with a career 4.21 ERA against Houston.

              Pick: Pirates +101

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (-104, 9 ½)

Curt Schilling's last three appearances have gone to waste. The aging right-hander is 0-2 during this time despite a solid 2.84 ERA.

Schilling, who has a 4.71 lifetime ERA against the Yankees, has his newly renovated grip to thank for his recent success. He changed the grip on his changeup, an improvement which trickled down to his splitter and gave him much more movement on both pitches.

“(The new grip has) allowed the changeup to (look) fastball-like, for even better deception and (more fastball-like) rotation. It’s added to the deception and the trajectory of the pitch,” Schilling told the Boston Herald this week.

Since returning from injury in early August, Schilling has a 3.35 ERA over seven starts and has pitched at least six innings in each of those efforts.

              Pick: Red Sox -104

                      DUNKEL INDEX

                      Today's MLB Picks
