This week's MLS preview and picks

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Real Salt Lake at D.C. United – (+550, draw +275, -225)
                Wednesday, Sept. 12

United have the most powerful attack in the league, the staunchest defense in the East, and arguably the best all-around team in MLS at the moment. They are unbeaten in eight league games and, despite a huge improvement in Real Salt Lake’s form, are not likely to give away any points in this game.

United scored 20 goals over their eight-game unbeaten run, with Jaime Moreno continuing to lead the way. He's tallied five goals this season, but it is his ability to drop off and link the midfield with the forwards that is the key to United’s success.

The boys from the capital boast a wealth of attacking talent and have a remarkable five players on their roster with more than five goals this year. Luciano Emilio's name stands out on the list; he's scored a league-leading 18 times this season.

United’s most recent game is a good example of how difficult they are to beat. Down 2-1 to the New England Revolution, they were largely outplayed in the first half of the game. But they rallied with three second-half goals and left the stunned Revs with a loss.

Granted, Real Salt Lake are greatly improved from the side from that went two months without a win to open the season. They've added three exciting Argentinean stars, Matias Mantilla, Fabian Espindola and Javier Morales, and have managed two wins in their last three games.

But those victories came against struggling Los Angeles and Kansas City. This is a much bigger test. RSL will do their best to sit behind the ball and shut D.C. United down, but the home team has too much firepower.

                Pick: United -225

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Galaxy at Chivas USA – (+275, draw +225, -120)
                Thursday, Sept. 13

It’s highly unlikely that the Galaxy can make the playoffs this season. But maybe they can restore some pride to their organization.

They snapped a six-game unbeaten streak with a 3-1 win over Colorado on Sunday and can lift themselves off the bottom of the Eastern Conference with another victory on Thursday.

The Galaxy are paying the price for some MLS bureaucracy this season. When they announced David Beckham’s arrival, the league scheduled most of their games in the second half of the season, putting too much pressure on the squad.

Los Angeles played six MLS games and two cup matches in August. As the fixtures went by, the injury list kept growing and the results got worse. Last week, for the first time since July, they had a full seven days rest. Abel Xavier, Landon Donovan and Ty Harden all had time to nurse niggling injuries, and the turnaround was instant. When Sunday’s game rolled around, the Galaxy played with a freshness and determination that had been lacking for months.

Even without Beckham, now sidelined with a long-term knee injury, the Galaxy now have a chance at getting some momentum back in their season.

Chivas topped Los Angeles 3-0 in an ill-tempered game just two weeks ago. But with Sunday's win under their belts, and a chance to get off the bottom of the table, the Galaxy might just have the confidence to exact revenge this week.

                Pick: Los Angeles +275

                  MLS Preview

Wednesday, September 12, 2007 (All Times Eastern)
                  Real Salt Lake (4-12-6) at D.C. United (14-6-4), 7:30 p.m.

Washington, D.C. - D.C. United can extend its unbeaten streak to nine games and clinch a spot in the postseason with a win against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday.

United has won seven times during their unbeaten run to move into first place in the Eastern Conference and has the best record in Major League Soccer.

"I give our team a lot of credit in a lot of ways, because they are resilient. They've been through a hard schedule and getting up for games," United coach Tom Soehn said. "I've pushed them pretty hard through this stretch and they responded."

Since losing its first three games of the season, D.C. is 14-3-3. In addition to clinching a playoff berth, United can extend its lead over New England to eight points with a victory.

D.C. is also seeking some revenge for one of its three losses in the last five months. Real Salt Lake won its first game of the season against D.C., 2-1, on June 23. United had a seven-game unbeaten streak, including five wins, before losing to Real earlier this season.

Although that result was the biggest upset of the season at the time, Real has become a much stronger side down the stretch. While it's doubtful Real will be able to make the playoffs for the first time in team history, it has won three of its last six to move within 11 points of the final berth.

Three of Real's victories this season are against teams that would be in the playoffs if the season ended today. In addition to snapping United's previous unbeaten streak, Real ended Houston's 11-game unbeaten streak this season.

Real had its two-game winning streak snapped Saturday against Houston because of a few breakdowns on defense, but played well to nearly erase a three-goal deficit in a 4-3 loss.

"I couldn't speak too knowledgeably about (our defense), so I tend not to, but there's got to be questions about why there are guys running completely free in the six-yard box on our goal," Real coach Jason Kreis said.

Although defense let Real down against Houston, that hasn't been a problem for the team for most of the season. RSL has posted four shutouts and is normally stingy on defense but struggles offensively.

Fabian Espindola, one of three recent Argentinean signings, has helped spark the offense. He has two goals in five games. Real had just 14 goals - one was an own goal - in its first 22 games, but has eight in its last three.

"We realize that we haven't scored enough over the first three-quarters of the season," Kreis said, "so we have been trying to figure out how we're going to get players forward and how we're going to get them forward quickly."

Scoring hasn't been a problem for D.C. this season. United leads the league with 46 goals, which is seven more than New England.

D.C. forward Luciano Emilio leads MLS with 18 goals. He is just five goals shy of the team record of 23 set by Raul Diaz Arce in 1996.

"I didn't know about the record, but if there is the possibility of breaking the record I will try - (but) that is not my main concern," Emilio said. "My focus is to play well for the team in order for the team to win."

                      Wednesday's MLB betting notes

                      Delgado a no-go

New York Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado appears to be recovering slower than expected from a strained right hip flexor. The slugger could miss another two weeks of action after the team hoped to have him back for this weekend’s series with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Delgado told reporters he first expected to be on the shelf for only a few days, but the injury worsened and is aggravated by the natural swinging motion.

"I'll be OK," Delgado told the New York Daily News. "Like right now I feel like I can't play. I know tomorrow I will not be able to play. I wish I could say it's much better and I am going to be out there tomorrow.”

Delgado has had a turbulent 2007. The former All-Star is batting .255 on the year with 22 home runs but can’t seem to keep a consistent stroke at the plate. He’s had up-and-down months since the beginning of the schedule – batting .323 in July, dropping to .253 in August, and back up to .375 in the four games he played in September before the injury.

"I want to have a positive attitude, but I don't want to trick myself either into doing something really stupid which is going out there when you're not ready," says Delgado.

                      Sweet Lou shuffles rotation

Chicago Cubs pitchers better check their calendars after manager Lou Piniella shook up the pitching rotation.

Piniella made a last-minute decision to push newly acquired righty Steve Trachsel into Thursday’s start against the Houston Astros on only three days rest. This move bumped staff ace Carlos Zambrano to Friday’s game versus the St. Louis Cardinals, giving the streaky right-hander five days rest between starts.

"Whether it's Houston or St. Louis, I still have to do my job," Zambrano told the Chicago Tribune. "I like the idea. It's very interesting pitching against St. Louis because they're in the pennant race. It's a good decision."

Piniella also told reporters he will start both Zambrano and lefty Ted Lilly on three days rest next week when the Cubs face the Cincinnati Reds.

Wild card or bust for Seattle

A nine-game skid all but ended the Seattle Mariners’ dreams of a division championship. The Mariners are 8 ½ games behind the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West standings and are switching focus to the wild-card race.

"We've just got such a long way to go to get the Angels," manager John McLaren told the Seattle Times. "They'd have to run into a [losing] streak like we hit. I think, realistically, the wild card is the way we're looking."

Seattle is only 5 ½ game out of the wild card spot, now occupied by the New York Yankees, with fewer than 20 games remaining on the schedule. The Mariners opened a seven-game home stand with a loss to the Oakland Athletics on Monday night. The M’s have a four-game set with Tampa Bay this weekend.

"We still think we have a chance, which we do,” McLean said. “We're on the West Coast the rest of the time, at home 14 of 21 days. We're going to do the most with it that we can."

Rocco’s return not what you think

The third member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' young and talented outfield could return to the team any day now – but he won’t necessarily see much playing time as the season winds down.

Center fielder Rocco Baldelli, out since May 19 with an injured hamstring, will meet up with the team in Boston. But Baldelli will be more of a clubhouse personality than an everyday member of the lineup, according to manager Joe Maddon.

"He's a great team guy and he's a part of what we're doing," Maddon told the Tampa Tribune. "We've got so many games left, we're on a road trip. It's a great place to be with the guys. I'd like to get him involved."

Maddon didn’t count out using Baldelli as a designated hitter but made it clear he wants his outfielder in the clubhouse and in the dugout to help the D-Rays close out the season on the right foot.

"I just would like to have him here, even if it's just taping ankles," Maddon said. "I just want him here to be part of the group."

Tampa Bay is the hottest team in the majors since winning 14 of its last 19 games heading into Tuesday’s Game 2 in Boston. The Devil Rays are batting .283 as a team in September with a collective ERA of just over 4.00 this month.

                          Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Has an Opening Day starting QB ever been traded two days after the first game? Browns, who flipped coin to pick the starter for the first preseason game, really look like they have no idea what they're doing.

-- Cowboys have the Browns' 1st-round draft pick in April, so they hope Brady Quinn gets in there quickly, and takes his lumps, as most young QB's do.

-- How about an Nebraska-Arizona State bowl game, with former ASU QB Keller now quarterbacking the Huskers?

-- Big 11 teams have played 22 games so far, and six have been against I-AA teams!!!! This is ridiculous. They start a new TV network, and give us games vs I-AA clubs. Great.

-- Cubs lost in 11 innings at Houston, Brewers won 6-1 in Pittsburgh, and are now back in first place in NL Central.

-- Bill Parcells says you can stop defensive sign stealing by giving defensive players wristbands with numbers on them and signalling numbers, changing the numbers each week.

                            Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts.........

                            13) If I was the athletic director at Duke, as soon as the Giants fire Tom Coughlin in early January (or sooner), I’d have him on speed dial. Duke football is like an expansion team, and Coughlin did great job with the expansion Jaguars; he can make Duke respectable again.

                            12) #1 word for Week 1 in NFL: overreaction. Winning teams are the greatest ever, losing teams suck, there is no middle ground. Well there always is a middle ground, especially in a league where parity rules. You'll see this week.

                            11) Packers found themselves a keeper in rookie PK Crosby, who many thought kicked well in college only because he played in altitude at Colorado, but Crosby also holds NCAA record for longest field goal without a tee, and he kicked that in the Orange Bowl, at sea level in Miami.

                            10) Minnesota Vikings are $19M under the $109M salary cap, most of any NFL team. Bears are closest to cap, only $677,000 under it.

                            9) Arkansas is 6-1 in OT football, with two of wins coming vs. Alabama, in last four years. They won last year when Bama missed an extra point in OT.

                            8) According to a new book coming out, one of the New York Giants’ psychologists told team not to draft Jeremy Shockey, that it wouldn’t go well, prompting an argument with then-GM Ernie Accorsi, who won out. Shockey is overrated, but certainly not a disaster.

                            7) The NFC is becoming like the Eastern Conference in NBA; it is very obvious that three best teams in NFL all reside in the AFC, and it isn’t close.

                            6) Chad Pennington is this generation’s Pat Haden; blond, smart, weak arm, good enough to lead team into the playoffs, not good enough to get team to Super Bowl. Rams got to the Super Bowl when Vince Ferragamo replaced Haden; is Kellen Clemens the Jets’ version of Ferragamo?

                            5) Greens at East Lake CC in Atlanta are so bumpy, pro-am for this week’s Tour Championship has been cancelled, and no one is allowed to play the course until play begins Thursday. There is chance the $10M FedEx Cup purse could be decided by players putting on sand greens.

                            4) So Patriots got caught stealing signals from Jet coaches, and according to member of NFL’s Competition Committee, "It isn’t the first time for them." Apparently, Packers threw the same guy off the sidelines at Lambeau before a game last November. The league has to come down on them for this; either that, or just make it legal and let everyone do it.

                            3) Odd stat from Viking-Falcon game Sunday: Neither team ran a play inside the other team’s 20-yard line, very unusual. Vikings’ only TD came on pass/run to Peterson. Falcons did not score a TD.

                            2) Steelers had an unheard-of 27-yard edge in average field position at Cleveland, starting their drives at an average of their own 47-yard line. This might be the biggest edge we see in that stat all year long.

                            1) It is pretty sad that a talented guy like Randy Moss goes to New England and thrives, but when he was a Raider, they couldn’t play him because he didn’t try hard enough. For a
2-14 team not to play Moss indicates a pathetic lack of effort. He’s a fair-weather guy, and you don’t win titles with guys like that.
