          Streaking Pitchers

          Tuesday, September 11

          HOT

Tim Wakefield (Boston Red Sox) - The knuckleballer is coming off his first no-decision of the season, but the BoSox still won the game. Boston's won each of the last four times Wakefield's been on the hill with two of those victories coming against the same Devil Rays team he'll face tonight. Wakefield has allowed no runs in his last 15 innings against the Rays and only one run in his three second-half starts versus Tampa Bay this year. The Sox are listed as heavy -212 favorites tonight. Tampa will counter with Andy Sonnanstine.

Shaun Marcum (Toronto Blue Jays) – The righty lost to the Bronx Bombers on July 18, but since then he has been nearly unbeatable. Toronto has won eight of his last nine appearances, allowing fewer than five runs in each victory. The Jays host the Yanks as +118 underdogs tonight.

Kevin Correia (San Francisco Giants) – The former reliever made 51 appearances out of the bullpen for the last-place Giants, but his record as a starter could earn him a full-time spot in San Francisco's rotation. He didn't allow a run in just over four innings of work in his first start of the year on August 14. Correia has now won three straight outings and opposing batters are hitting just over the Mendoza Line (.209) against him in that span. Books list the Giants as -128 favorites against the division-leading Arizona Diamondbacks.

          COLD

John Danks (Chicago White Sox) – The rookie left-hander lost each of his six starts in August and missed his only previously scheduled outing in September because the club believed he'd been overused. The Pale Hose were held to one run or less in five of those appearances during his current slide and under bettors cashed in after four of those contests. Chicago hosts the Tribe as +148 underdogs and the total is set at 9 ½.

Jarrod Washburn (Seattle Mariners) – It hasn't been raining cats and dogs lately in Seattle, it's been raining losses. When Washburn earned his ninth victory of the season on August 21, the Mariners were on top of the AL wild-card race. The Mariners have gone 4-15 since then and their playoff dreams have turned into a late-season nightmare. The lefty has been part of the problem, dropping three straight starts and allowing 12 runs over that span. The M's are -159 home faves today against Oakland.

            Hot Lines

            Tuesday, September 11

Colorado Rockies at Philadelphia Phillies (-133, 11)

It’s almost unbelievable how well the Phillies have been hitting the ball lately. Six runs in an extra-innings win over Colorado last night, 20 runs in the series against Florida, and a .299 team batting average over their last 10 games. Not too shabby. Today, with starting pitchers on both sides who serve up more meatballs than a high school lunch lady, you’ve got to go with the hot bats – and the Phils definitely have that. Pat Burrell has four home runs in the last five games, Aaron Rowand is swinging a hot bat and Chase Utley has the best batting average in the NL (.339).

            Pick: Phillies -133

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers (+137, 7)

Jake Peavy started on three days rest in his last outing and got hammered by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Eight earned runs in four innings isn’t something fans are used to seeing from the NL Cy Young favorite, but the upset in his usual rotation obviously threw the Padres ace off his rhythm. He comes into Dodger Stadium today on a full five days rest, but it might take another game or two for Peavy to get in the groove again. He’s got seven straight wins against the Dodgers, but L.A. is back at home after a long road trip and they’ve been hitting right-handers well lately. Esteban Loaiza will start for the Dodgers after earning a win in his L.A. debut last week.

            Pick: Dodgers +137

Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals (-125, 9 ½)

Let the landslide begin. After a six-game losing streak that mercifully ended Sunday, the Twins essentially flushed their slim hopes of the playoffs down the toilet. Now they have a series against the Royals, who are in a slump of their own. But if you look at recent numbers, there’s not much difference in the play of the two clubs. Scott Baker has been terrific for the Twins, but unless the right-hander can go nine innings like he did last time he faced the Royals, they could be in trouble. The normally steady Minnesota bullpen has a 5.40 ERA over the last 10 games. With all the bad vibes in the Minnesota clubhouse, it could be a good chance for the Royals to take advantage.

            Pick: Royals +113
