    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Wild finish in San Francisco, as Cardinals failed to fall on a fumble in end zone in final minute, and 49ers escaped a sloppy game with a 20-17 Week 1 win. Ugly, but a win.

-- Steve McNair, Ray Lewis both got hurt in Ravens' loss at Cincinnati, which led to the hideous Kyle Boller screwing up a chance to get game into OT in final minute. Not good.

-- Diamondbacks scored three in ninth to escape with a 5-3 win at San Francisco; traffic there must have been great.

-- A's prospect Daric Barton, the crown jewel of the Mulder trade with St Louis, finally made his big league debut, and was on base four out of five times in A's 9-3 win at Seattle.

-- Oregon gained 624 yards at Michigan; only 13 of 77 plays they ran came on third down; how on God's green earth is Michigan a 7.5-point favorite over Notre Dame Saturday?

-- Sometimes, I get the idea ESPN is now run by imbeciles; how many times do we have to see Chad Johnson and his self-promoting, me-me-me act? Could he just play? Is that possible? Maybe it isn't, I don't know, but I am sick of him.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13.....

This list, for now, isn't a ranking of top 13 teams; we know if Florida and USC played most of these teams, they would win, so what this is is really recognition of things that happened over the weekend. Keep that in mind before you call me an idiot, then feel free to call me one.................

      13) Indiana-- Passed for 221 yards, ran for 221 in 37-27 win at Western Michigan; they're 2-0 for interim coach Lynch, after passing of beloved coach Hoeppner this spring.

      12) North Texas-- They might be 0-2, but they rebounded in second game after a 79-10 loss at Oklahoma- they were 46-64 passing, for 601 freakin' yards, and they lost 45-31 at SMU. One receiver caught passes for over 320 yards, 4th-most ever.

      11) Penn State-- Didn't Joe Paterno break his leg less than a year ago? Isn't he nearly 80? The damn guy ran off the field at halftime Saturday. QB Morelli doesn't impress, for a senior.

      10) Nebraska-- Gutty win at Wake Forest good because two friends of mine were at game, and they're huge Husker fans; would have been a long drive home, after a setback. Well, it was a long ride home anyway, just a happier one.

      9) Accountants at Troy State-- Omar Haugabook and boys are 0-2, but they opened at Arkansas/at Florida, then ESPN has them vs Oklahoma State Friday night.........cha--ching!!!!

      8) California-- Survived trip to Fort Collins, winning 34-28, a week after hammering Tennessee 45-31 at home. How long is Tedford going to stay in Berkeley; would he be a darkhorse candidate for Michigan, or LSU, if Miles goes to Ann Arbor?

      7) Boston College-- Eagles are already 2-0 in ACC, hammering former coach O'Brien's NC State team, 37-17, after taking ball away seven times. Problem is, O'Brien is great coach, and in a few years, State will have better program; their resources are lot better than ones in Boston, and that means a lot.

      6) Mississippi State-- I know, they only beat Tulane, but after horrible beating vs LSU in opener, any road win looks golden for coach Croom. Auburn is on deck, an angry Auburn team.

      5) South Florida-- Rising beast of Big East. Boosters need to be raising money to keep coach Leavitt in Tampa, because if Les Miles turns down Michigan, its a wide-open race........ Bulls' OT win at Auburn makes Leavitt a strong candidate.

      4) West Virginia-- State legislature forced them to make trip to Huntington for first time since 1915, and they trailed 13-6 at half in what had to be the Super Bowl for Marshall. WVa then scored 42 points in second half, restored state pecking order.

      3) South Carolina-- Spurrier is a great, great college football coach; how much money do you think he infused into South Carolina's budget, not just their athletic budget?

      2) LSU-- Enjoy it now, Bayou Bengal fans, because Miles-to- Michigan rumors are right around the corner. He played and coached at Ann Arbor, is logical choice to succeed Carr.

      1) Oklahoma-- 79-10 win over North Texas, 51-13 over Miami, the Florida Miami. All with a redshirt freshman QB who hasn't had time to get a bogus job at a car dealership yet.

                      Tuesday’s MLB betting notes

                      Texas reaches for .500

The Texas Rangers were a season-high 19 games under .500 in mid-June. They are now aiming to win 15 of their last 21 games to finish with a winning record for the first time since 2004.

"It's not out of reach," manager Ron Washington told MLB.com. "To achieve it, we need to continue to play baseball like we've been. They were saying the Rangers were the worst team in baseball earlier this season, so that would be some kind of accomplishment."

The Rangers have steadily improved this summer. In August they were fifth in the AL in batting (.273) and fourth in the AL with a combined staff ERA of 3.76. Texas has started September with a 7-1 record.

On Tuesday, Texas play the Detroit Tigers in a doubleheader with Vicente Padilla (5-9, 6.01) facing Chad Durbin (8-6, 4.57) in the first game and Brandon McCarthy (5-8, 4.79) squaring up to Jair Jurrjens (1-1, 3.60) in the second. Detroit is favored in both contests, -160 in the first and –150 in the evening game.

                      Matsui slumping

New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui is locked in a 4-for-38 slump and his average has dropped to .292 – the lowest level since August 10. Yankees manager Joe Torre believes the problem is mechanical and nothing to do with Matsui’s injury problems this season.

"I just think he is pulling off again," Torre told MLB.com. "That is the one consistent problem that he is going to be having from time to time, is he is going to be thinking about pulling the ball maybe too much."

"In batting practice, he worked on it yesterday and hit the ball to left-center a lot. It's just a matter of being able to do that in a game, because I think that opens everything up for him," added Torre.

Matsui, who hasn’t hit a home run since August 8, will be hoping to break out of his slump against Toronto starter Shaun Marcum (12-5, 3.74) on Tuesday. New York counters with Phil Hughes (2-3, 5.33) for the first of this week’s three games with the Jays. The Yankees are a –121 favorite with the total set at 10.

                      Tampa Bay gets hot

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have scored 125 runs in their last 15 games – a new club record over a 15-game span. They put together an 11-4 record over that stretch.

According to statistics on MLB.com, only three teams have scored more runs over that many games: the New York Yankees with 144 during a stretch this July, the Braves in 2006 (132), and the Astros in 2004 (126).

Since August 24, the Rays are first in the American League in batting (.311 average) and top the major leagues in runs (125), home runs (29) and slugging percentage (.555).

The Rays lineup faces Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (16-10, 4.39) on Tuesday in the second of a three-game series at Fenway Park. Tampa Bay counters with Andy Sonnanstine (5-9, 5.73) and is a +194 underdog with the total set at 10.

                      Cubs' Ramirez plays through pain

A team locked in a playoff battle just can’t afford to rest their big bats – regardless of injuries or niggles. That’s why Chicago Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez is still in the lineup despite a knee injury and a sore left wrist.

Ramirez is batting .315 with 20 homers and 84 RBIs this year and is a key part of the heart of Chicago's order.

"I'm doing all right," he told reporters this weekend. "I'm not 100 percent, but I won't be the rest of the season, so I've got to deal with the stuff that I have. I'm good enough to play."

Chicago is locked in the tightest division battle in the majors, and are just one game behind the AL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers heading into Monday's action.

The Cubs start an all-important three-game series against the Houston Astros today, sending Jason Marquis (11-8, 4.13) to the mound to face Brandon Backe (0-1, 4.76). Chicago is a –115 favorite with the total set at 9.

                      Angels get Guerrero back

The Los Angeles Angels will receive a boost Tuesday when AL MVP candidate Vladimir Guerrero returns to the lineup after missing most of last weekend’s four-game series against Cleveland.

Guerrero, who is struggling with right elbow tendinitis, is hitting .326 with 22 homers and 110 RBIs for the season. It’s likely he will be listed as the designated hitter for his first few games back.

The Angels open a three-game series in Baltimore on Tuesday, sending Kelvim Escobar (16-7, 3.04) to the mound to face the Oriole’s Daniel Cabrera (9-15, 5.11).

                        Baseball – Gameday

                        MLB

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Gameday
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Tuesday MLB Gameday

The Padres' Jake Peavy is the marquee name on the probable pitchers list on a Tuesday that features key battles between contenders. Here is your MLB Gameday . . .

Colorado Rockies at Philadelphia Phillies, 7:05pm ET
Franklin Morales (0-2, 6.23 ERA) vs. Adam Eaton (9-8, 6.28 ERA)

Morales is projected to get the start for the Rockies on Tuesday despite the fact that he only lasted three innings (giving up five earned runs on five hits) last time out versus the Giants. The lefthander is now 0-2 with two no-decisions on the season, and he hasn't been able to last longer than 5 1-3 innings. Morales has fanned seven and walked eight.

Eaton will be trying to keep his record above the .500 mark when he takes to the mound against the Rockies on Tuesday. The righthander hasn't pitched since September 2, when he gave up five earned runs on six hits over six innings in a no-decision versus the Marlins. Eaton's ERA is now up to 6.28 on the season, and he's walked 60 batters.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees, 7:07pm ET
Phil Hughes (2-3, 5.33 ERA) vs. Shaun Marcum (12-5, 3.74 ERA)

Hughes hasn't been getting as much attention as fellow Yankee rookie pitcher Joba Chamberlain, and for good reason - he hasn't been as effective. The righthander has allowed four or more earned runs in three of his past four starts, and he hasn't picked up a win since August 10. Hughes, though, was solid last time out versus the Mariners.

Marcum gave up just two earned runs on five hits over five innings against the Red Sox last time out, but he only walked away with a no-decision in that contest. The righthander, though, has managed to pick up the win in four of his last six outings, only losing to the A's on August 20 (six earned runs on nine hits in his three innings worked).

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets, 7:10pm ET
Buddy Carlyle (8-6, 5.21 ERA) vs. Orlando Hernandez (9-4, 3.32 ERA)

Carlyle lasted just 1 2-3 innings against the Phillies last time out, surrendering three earned runs on four hits and three walks in that outing. The righthander has allowed three or more earned runs in each of his past six starts, and his ERA is now up to 5.21 on the season. Against the Mets on August 7 Carlyle allowed three runs in five innings.

Hernandez is scheduled to return from a foot injury and make this start against the division-rival Braves on Tuesday. El Duque hasn't pitched since August 30, when he gave up five earned runs on six hits over three innings versus the Phillies. The righthander, though, only got a no-decision in that game, and he's 9-4 on the season.

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers, 10:10pm ET
Jake Peavy (16-6, 2.43 ERA) vs. Esteban Loaiza (2-0, 2.49 ERA)

Peavy is coming off a horrible outing versus the Diamondbacks, in which he gave up eight earned runs on seven hits over four innings on just three day's rest. Prior to that start the righthander had won three straight games, allowing just three earned runs in those 20 innings pitched. Peavy has struck out 210 batters while walking 58 this season.

Loaiza won in his Dodgers debut last week, allowing three earned runs on nine hits over seven innings to beat the Cubs. The righthander has made just three starts since returning from the disabled list last month, but he's gone 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in those three outings for L.A. and Oakland. Loaiza lasted at least seven innings all three times.

-- Jeff Salazar, Diamondbacks, hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the ninth inning for a 5-3 victory at San Francisco.

                          BOSTON BLANKED

Josh Wilson's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning drove in the only run for Tampa Bay in a 1-0 win over Boston on Monday. It was Boston's first 1-0 loss at home since Sept. 2, 2001, when the New York Yankees' Mike Mussina lost a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning. The Devil Rays have won 13 of their last 17.

                          STRUGGLING CUBS

Aramis Ramirez homered twice and had four hits to help Ted Lilly earn his 15th victory, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 12-3 victory over St. Louis on Monday. It was just the third win in eight games for Chicago, which fell out of first place Sunday for the first time since Aug. 16. The Cubs ended the day in a first place tie with Milwaukee, which was shut down by Pittsburgh 9-0. The Cardinals have lost four straight and sit three games back of the Cubs and Brewers. ^TIGERS RALLY=

Detroit scored four runs in the ninth inning to rally past Toronto 5-4 on Monday. Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay was one out away from his eighth complete game when he gave up a pair of singles and was relieved by Casey Janssen, who gave up a two-run single to Curtis Granderson to make it 4-3. Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run single to cap the rally. Halladay has lasted at least eight innings in his last six starts, only one of them a win.

                          FREEFALL

Kurt Suzuki and Dan Johnson both hit grand slams to power Oakland past Seattle 9-3 on Monday and hand the Mariners their 14th loss in their last 16 games. Seattle is 5 1/2 games behind the wild card-leading New York Yankees and 8 1/2 behind the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West. On Aug. 26, they were leading the wild-card race by two games and were just one game behind the Angels.

                          BRUISING RECORD

David DeJesus was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning of Kansas City's 4-2 loss to Minnesota on Monday, bringing his season total to 19, which is a Royals record. Mike Macfarlane in 1994 and Angel Berroa in 2003 were hit by 18 pitches. The Royals have been plunked a major league-leading 82 times.

                          STRONG IN DEFEAT

Bengie Molina hit a pair of solo home runs for San Francisco in a 5-3 loss to Arizona on Monday. Molina has a career-high 79 RBIs -- 76 of them as a catcher, second-most in San Francisco history. Dick Dietz had 104 in 1970.

                          STREAKING

Moises Alou extended his hitting streak to 15 games with his first triple of the season in the New York Mets' 3-2 win over Atlanta on Monday. The Mets (82-61) have won four straight and nine of their last 10 to improve to a season-best 21 games above .500.

                          SPEAKING

"Where's that been? That was a thing of beauty. We hit the ball for power. We hit the ball in the gaps. We hit the ball with men in scoring position. A game like this can really get you going." -- Cubs manager Lou Piniella, after his team pounded St. Louis 12-3 on Monday. Ted Lilly matched a career-high by earning his 15th win and improved to 9-1 when starting following a Cubs loss.

                          SEASONS
                          Sept. 11

1912 -- Eddie Collins set a major league record with six stolen bases for the Philadelphia Athletics in a 9-7 win over the Detroit Tigers. Collins stole six more in a game on Sept. 22.

1918 -- The Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 behind the three-hit pitching of Carl Mays to win the World Series in six games.

1956 -- Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds tied a rookie record for home runs in a season with his 38th homer of the year. The blow came off Steve Ridzik of the New York Giants and the Reds went on to an 11-5 victory.

1959 -- The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4, stopping reliever Roy Face's 22-game winning streak. It was his only loss of the season as he finished with an 18-1 record.

1974 -- It took the St. Louis Cardinals 25 innings -- seven hours, four minutes -- to beat the New York Mets. A record 202 batters went to the plate, Felix Millan and John Milner had 12 appearances apiece.

1985 -- Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds became the career hits leader with his 4,192nd hit to break Ty Cobb's record. Rose lined a 2-1 pitch off San Diego pitcher Eric Show to left-center field for a single in the first inning. It was the 57th anniversary of Ty Cobb's last game in the majors.

1987 -- New York Mets third baseman Howard Johnson, with 34 homers, became the first National League infielder to reach 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in the same season. His 30th stolen base came in the fourth inning of a 6-4, 10-inning loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

1996 -- San Diego's Ken Caminiti broke his own major league record by homering from both sides of the plate in a game for the fourth time this season. In a 6-5 win over Pittsburgh, Caminiti homered left-handed in the fifth inning, hitting a two-run shot. Batting right-handed in the seventh, he hit a solo shot to break his record set last year.

2004 -- Barry Bonds broke his major league record for walks in a season during San Francisco's 5-3 win over Arizona. Bonds walked three times, once intentionally, to run his season total to 201, surpassing the record of 198 he set two seasons ago.

2006 -- Cody Ross tied two franchise records with three home runs and seven RBIs as Florida routed the New York Mets 16-5.

                          Today's birthday: Frank Francisco 28.

                              San Diego at LA Dodgers
An important NL West series opens tonight in Dodger Stadium where LA has to face its old nemesis in Jake Peavy. Peavy is 8-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 17 career starts against the Dodgers, including a perfect 2-0 mark against them this season. But San Diego has scuffled to a 2-4 start on their current road trip and faces Esteban Loaiza (2-0, 2.49), who has delivered a quality start in each of his three appearances since coming off the DL. Even with Peavy on the mound, the Dodgers look like a good home underdog pick (+142) according to Dunkel, which has LA favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: LA Dodgers (+142). Here are all of today's games.
