Hot lines: Monday’s best MLB bets

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets (-101, 8 ½)

The New York Mets seriously hurt the Braves' chances of making the playoffs with a three-game sweep in Atlanta last week. Now they look to do the same at Shea Stadium.

New York outscored Atlanta 15-4 in that series and have been just as hot at the plate since. Carlos Beltran is leading the way. The center fielder is 17-for-42 with three homers and nine RBIs in his last 11 games and is batting .383 in 12 games against the Braves this season.

The strong offense has helped the Mets win seven of eight in September. New York is now six games ahead in the NL East.

Today they face Braves righty Tim Hudson (15-7, 3.47), who just gave up five runs and a season-high 11 hits in five innings during Wednesday's game against Philadelphia.

    Pick: New York -101

Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers (+101, 9)

The Toronto Blue Jays are trying to avoid losing three in a row after dropping the final two of a three-game series against the Devil Rays last weekend. The Jays are now 8 ½ games back in the wild-card race.

The Tigers, meanwhile, have won four of their last five to close to within six games of AL Central-leading Cleveland. In this week’s series with Seattle, center fielder Curtis Granderson became only the third player in major league history to manage 20 steals, 20 homers, 20 triples and 20 doubles in a single season.

Granderson, and the rest of the Tigers lineup, face Jays right-hander Roy Halladay (14-7, 3.94) tonight, who has lost his last two decisions. Toronto's ace gave up five runs and nine hits in eight innings against the Boston Red Sox in his last start.

    Pick: Detroit +101

Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners (-115, 9)

The Mariners lost eight of ten on their recent road trip, falling from three games ahead in the wild-card race, to five games back. Fortunately for Seattle backers, 14 of their final 21 games this season are at home, starting with a three-game stretch against the A’s this week.

A return to Safeco Field is just what the doctor ordered for the ailing Mariners. They have a 34-39 record on the road (losing 13 of the last 15), but are 41-27 at home this season.

Seattle has been particularly impressive against West Coast rivals Oakland this year, winning 10 of 13 so far. They send Horacio Ramirez (8-5, 6.45) to the mound today. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 6.48 ERA in three career starts versus the A's.

    Pick: Seattle -115

      Baseball Today - September 10

      SCOREBOARD
      Monday, Sept. 10
Toronto at Detroit (7:05 p.m. EDT). Roy Halladay tries for win No. 15 against Kenny Rogers and the Tigers.

      STARS
      Sunday

-Alex Rodriguez, Yankees, homered for the fifth straight game in a 6-3 victory over Kansas City.

-Rickie Weeks and Ryan Braun, Brewers. Weeks and Braun each hit two home runs in Milwaukee's 10-5 win over Cincinnati.

-Pat Burrell, Phillies, homered and drove in three runs in an 8-5 win over Florida.

-Jason Kubel, Twins, hit a three-run homer and an RBI single to help Minnesota beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2.

-Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners, went 3-for-4 and scored four runs in a 14-7 victory over Detroit.

      POWER SURGE

Alex Rodriguez homered for the fifth straight game, connecting for the seventh time during that span and sending the New York Yankees past Kansas City 6-3 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. A-Rod's two-run shot off Zack Greinke in the first inning was his major league-leading 52nd homer and it raised his RBI count to 140, also best in the big leagues. It's the third time in his 13-year career that he's homered in five straight games.

      SWEET 18

Josh Beckett allowed two runs in seven innings to earn his 18th victory - tops in the majors - and Boston beat Baltimore 3-2 on Sunday. Beckett yielded seven hits, struck out eight and walked none. ... Chien-Ming Wang matched Beckett with his 18th win in the New York Yankees' 6-3 win over Kansas City. Wang gave up three runs and five hits, walking four and striking out four.

      RARE FEAT

Curtis Granderson of the Tigers joined Willie Mays and Frank ''Wildfire'' Schulte as the only players in major league history with 20 stolen bases, 20 homers, 20 triples and 20 doubles in a season when he stole a base in the first inning of Detroit's 14-7 loss to Seattle on Sunday. Schulte was the first to accomplish the feat in 1911 while playing for the Chicago Cubs, and Mays did it in 1957 with the New York Giants.

      BRUISING BREWS

Milwaukee became the third team in major league history to open a game with three straight home runs when Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy and Ryan Braun connected Sunday off Cincinnati's Phil Dumatrait in a 10-5 victory. Weeks and Braun each hit two home runs and J.J. Hardy homered and hit two doubles - all in the first four innings. Johnny Estrada also homered to give the Brewers six in a game for the first time since April 29, 2006.

      SO FAR, SO GOOD

Pedro Martinez scattered six hits in five scoreless innings to earn his second win of the season in the New York Mets' 4-1 win over Houston on Sunday. Martinez had shoulder surgery in October and also worked five innings in his return to the majors last Monday at Cincinnati, earning the win in the Mets' 10-4 victory.

      CUBS WOES

Chicago fell 10-5 to Pittsburgh on Sunday as the Cubs continued an ominous trend against its NL Central foes. The Cubs have won 10 of their last 15 against the other contenders for the division title, the Brewers and Cardinals. They have dropped seven of 12 to both the Pirates and Cincinnati, whom they face a combined nine times in their last 20 games.

      STREAKING

Jose Valverde picked up his major league-leading 45 save to help Arizona hold off St. Louis 6-5 on Sunday for their fifth straight victory. ... Sammy Sosa hit his 607th career homer to lead Texas past Oakland 12-9 for their fifth straight win. The Rangers have won 12 of 14 to move into a tie for third place with the A's in the AL West. Texas had been in last place since April 25.

      SPEAKING

''So I'm going to enjoy every little moment that I have, every curtain call, sign as many autographs as I can because it's not going to last too long.'' - Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez, on his first home start of the season following shoulder surgery last October. Martinez picked up the win and hit a double in his first at-bat to help New York top Houston 4-1.

      SEASONS
      Sept. 10

1919 - Cleveland's Ray Caldwell pitched a no-hitter against the New York Yankees as the Indians took a 3-0 decision in the opening game of a doubleheader.

1950 - Joe DiMaggio became the first player to hit three home runs in one game at Griffith Stadium as the New York Yankees beat the Washington Senators 8-1.

1967 - Joe Horlen of the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers with a 6-0 no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader.

1969 - The New York Mets swept Montreal in a doubleheader at Shea Stadium, 3-2 in 12 innings and 7-1. The victories moved the Mets into first place in the NL East for their first time on top.

1974 - Lou Brock tied Maury Wills' single-season stolen base record with a steal in the first inning against the Philadelphia Phillies. He broke the record with steal No. 105 in the seventh inning.

1977 - Roy Howell hit two home runs, two doubles and a single and drove in nine runs as Toronto beat the New York Yankees 19-3.

1980 - Bill Gullickson struck out 18 - the most by a rookie - as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2.

1997 - Mark McGwire joined Babe Ruth as the only players in major league history with consecutive 50-homer seasons by hitting a 446-foot shot off Shawn Estes in the third inning of St. Louis' game against at San Francisco. McGwire, who hit a major league-leading 52 homers for Oakland last season, became the first player with back-to-back 50-homer seasons since Ruth did it in 1927 and 1928.

2000 - Arizona's Randy Johnson became the 12th player to reach the 3,000 strikeout plateau, fanning a season-high 14 in seven innings as the Diamondbacks lost to Florida 4-3 in 12 innings. Johnson also recorded his 300th strikeout for the third consecutive season and the fourth time overall.

2003 - St. Louis' Tony La Russa became the eighth manager in major league history to reach 2,000 wins as the Cardinals beat Colorado 10-2. The 58-year-old La Russa is 2,000-1,782 in 25 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland and St. Louis.

2006 - Francisco Rodriguez became the youngest pitcher in major league history to reach 100 saves in the Los Angeles Angels' 4-3 win over Toronto. The 24-year-old right-hander, with 41 saves this season, broke the previous mark held by Gregg Olson.

Today's birthdays: Kameron Loe 26; Danys Baez 30; Randy Johnson 44.

          September 10

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          NFL - MNF Notes
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What bettors need to know: Monday's NFL doubleheader

Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals (-2 ½, 40)

          J.O. A-OK

Quarterback Steve McNair’s blindside is in good hands. Ravens left tackle Jonathan Ogden has been battling a hyperextended toe all preseason but should be ready for Monday night.

“Do I feel great? No,” the 10-time Pro Bowler told reporters. “Do I feel better than what I’ve been feeling? Yes.”

Ogden practiced all week without any setbacks. The news isn’t as good for backup running back Mike Anderson. He’s missed the last two days of practice because of a personal matter and is questionable against Cincinnati.

If Anderson is absent, Baltimore will be left with Willis McGahee and Musa Smith as the only available options in the backfield.

          Giving credit where it’s due

You won’t get any arguments from the Bengals about the Ravens defense being overrated. Cincinnati players know the challenges squaring off against a stout Baltimore D.

“They’re definitely the best defense in football,” Bengal offensive tackle Willie Anderson admitted to Columbus Dispatch. “The schedule-makers and the world want to see what we’re made of early in the season and there’s no better test than the defending (AFC North) division champions.”

Anderson sounded in awe of Baltimore but his offensive teammates are confident in Cincinnati’s chances.

“You’re not going to stop me – period,” wideout Chad Johnson told the Baltimore Sun. “One person, two people, three, I don’t care. You can contain 85 (Johnson’s jersey number) for a certain play, but at some point throughout these four quarters, I’m going to make a play. I always look forward to playing the best defense in the NFL.”

Quarterback Carson Palmer was equally optimistic.

“We’re always confident coming into this game, even though they are the No. 1 defense year in and year out, just because we, for whatever reason match up really well with them.”

The Bengals have won and covered in three of the last four contests against Baltimore.

Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers (-3, 45)

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure

The Cards wasted little time signing Quentin Moses after the Oakland Raiders surprisingly cut the rookie defensive end.

“He has a chance to be an excellent pass rusher,” Arizona general manager Rod Graves said of the third-round pick from Georgia. “When you have a guy like that who has that kind of frame, athletic ability, speed, you have to be patient and work with those kids.”

Moses should be a big help to Arizona. The club cut linebacker Buster Davis (its own third rounder) and LB/DE Chike Okeafor is out for the season due to a torn bicep.

The Cards see Moses as an outside linebacker in their 3-4 defense so he'll have to get comfortable outside his regular position.

          A test from the best

Last season the 49ers couldn’t stop the pass. They allowed the seventh most passing yards per game. Opposing teams completed almost 64 percent of their attempts against San Francisco’s woeful secondary.

Head coach Mike Nolan made several additions to his defense but none more important than defensive back Nate Clements and Michael Lewis. The pair will be counted on heavily against a stacked Arizona receiver company.

“It’s a huge challenge for us,” Lewis told the East Valley Tribune. “It’s one of the reasons we made the moves we did in the offseason. This one we’re facing this week is probably the top tandem in the league. It’s a battle we’re going to try to win.”

In two games against the Niners last season the Cardinals trio of Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Bryant Johnson caught 27 balls for 456 yards (an average of 16.9 yards a catch) and two touchdowns.
