    Six-pack for Monday

-- Pedro Martinez pitched five strong innings in his second start back from surgery, as Mets swept Houston.

-- A's, Rangers played 4:08, 415-pitch marathon, with a 1:29 rain delay in second inning, as Texas won 12-9. Not good.

-- Hernandez, Bonderman combined to give up 13 runs in 6.1 IP in Mariners' 14-7 win at Detroit.

-- Chris Young was hot before he went on DL, but Padres are 0-6 in his starts since he came off disabled list.

-- Umpires confiscated Iwamura's bat on a bogus protest by Joe Torre on September 1; the bat was found to be legal, but Iwamura hasn't gotten the bat back yet. Why not?

-- Three weeks to go in regular season; AL teams seem to be settling into playoff position: NL races remain exciting.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up Opening Day in NFL

      13) NFL offenses, for most part, try for first downs, not points they play to keep their defenses off field and not make errors, a direct product of over-coaching in the sport (helmet radios being the most obvious example). It makes the game less fun.

      12) In fourteen games played so far this week, there were just two (Lions-Raiders, Giants-Dallas) where both sides passed for 200+ yards. Buffalo ran an early punt back for TD, nursed the 7-6 lead into halftime, wound up getting outgained by a 470-184 margin, losing 15-14 on a last-second field goal. They not played not-to-lose, which in reality, cost them the game.

      11) There have been 1,523 plays run from scrimmage run so far in Week 1; of the 1,523, only 61 (4%) went for 20+ yards, and 13 of those were in the Giant game. The league needs a little more wide open football, like in Dallas Sunday night.

      10) If all Eli Manning has is a bruised shoulder, he needed to finish the game; in his post-game news conference, he hinted that if Giants had been down 3 instead of 10, he would have finished. In other words, he wimped out on his teammates.

      9) Redskins lose star OT Jansen, Rams lost Pace; when you can't keep your stars healthy, hard to have a successful year, and thats what makes such a huge difference in league where the difference between winning and losing can be slim. It also plays into the conservative nature of coaching. You win and no one gets hurt, its a perfect day.

      8) Vikings scored two defensive TDs, had six sacks, as they tormented Harrington in his Falcon debut.

      8) Browns went 3/out on eight of 13 series, as countdown to Brady Quinn's debut begins; they ran ball for only 46 yards and completed just 17 of 38 passes. Not good at all.

      7) Tennessee ran ball for 282 yards, the kind of yardage that wishbone teams used to run in Switzer's heyday at Oklahoma; very seldom does an NFL team run ball for so many yards.

      6) Six teams didn't score an offensive TD this week; five of them were visiting teams- the five teams combined to score a total of nine second half points.

      5) Green Bay was only home team not to score a TD; they ran ball for 46 yards, threw 19 incompletions, were outgained by 68 yards and had six 3/outs, but they found a way to win.

      4) Giants had lot of injuries Sunday night; Packers' tough D is coming to Swamp next week. Critical game for Giants, and for coach Coughlin, whose defense was horrendous Sunday, as Cowboys averaged 8.9 yards per play, 23 yards/completion, and scored 45 points. Not sure if they were tired or awful.

      3) Raiders missed three FGs in first half, and trailed 10-0; they rallied from 17-0 deficit to take 21-20 lead, but then the Lions scored the game's last 16 points in a surprisingly wild opener.

      2) Patriots ran opening kick of second half back 108 yards for TD that broke their game open; Dante Hall had 84-yd return on opening kick of second half for Rams, but Bulger isn't too good in red zone, they kicked FG, then Jackson fumbled twice as Rams lost once again to the Panthers.

      1) Six teams scored TD on either defense, special teams; only Buffalo scored one and lost. Very unusual for an NFL team to score an unusual TD and lose the game. Everitt's neck injury and the last-second loss made it a horrible day in Buffalo.

              Week 1 - 2007 NFL season

              Monday, September 10

Ravens @ Bengals-- Baltimore was 11-31 on third down last year vs Bengals, scoring only one TD in seven trips to Cincinnati red zone; they hope addition of McGahee improves those numbers. Bengals won four of last five series games, with Ravens losing in last two visits here, 42-29/13-7, but Cincy OL took some hits last offseason, which could hamper formerly high-powered offense. Ravens lost five of last six road openers, with under 8-1 in last 9 road openers. Bengals won last three home openers, by 3,29,17.

Cardinals @ 49ers-- Since losing pair of OT tilts to Niners in 2005, Cardinals won last four series games, winning last two visits here 17-10/26-20; six of last seven series totals were 45+. Arizona won 64.6% of third down plays in series LY, with Niners just 2-18 on third down, but Cardinals have been awful road team, losing last five road openers by 13-point average. Arizona is 1-12 in last 13 Week 1 road games. Niners covered their last four openers, with underdog covering seven of their last nine. At age 23, 49er QB Smith is same age as Hawai'i's Heisman hopeful Colt Brennan.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                NFL FOR MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

Baltimore at CINCINNATI (-2½; 40½)—Baltimore starting LT Jonathon
Ogden (toe tendon; missed all four exhibitions) remains questionable, but has
been participating in limited practices this week. Cincy WR T.J.
Houshmandzadeh, an effective weapon in the past vs. the Ravens, is doubtful
with a knee injury. However, the Bengals are most concerned about their
depleted LB corps, with Odell Thurman still suspended, Brian Simmons lost to
N.O. in free agency, and new starting OLB Rashad Jeanty (lower leg) is not
expected to be ready for Game One.

Arizona at SAN FRANCISCO (-3; 45)—49er star RB Frank Gore (held out
of the preseason due to a hand fracture) is reportedly virtually 100%. Scouts
reports Gore has demonstrated fresh legs and has appeared very light on his
feet this week after being spared the pounding of training camp. This is the
head coaching debut of Ken Whisenhunt of Arizona, offensive coordinator of
the Steelers LY. Whisenhunt (0-4 in the preseason) will call the plays and is
promising to develop a ground game with the Cardinals, who have won the last
                four meetings with S.F.
The Niners will honor their late coach Bill Walsh at the game, wearing
throwback uniforms featuring cherry-red jerseys and a version of their Walshera
pants. The players will wear “BW” patches on their helmets. And Walsh
                will be
practice. Minnesota MLB E.J. Henderson (illness), a key cog in the Vikes’ No.
1 rush defense LY, has returned to practice and is probable.

                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Monday Night Football Preview

The NFL offers up a twin bill on Monday night, with Baltimore taking on Cincinnati and Arizona meeting San Francisco. Here's a look at those games in the MNF preview …

Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals (-2.5) (Total 40.5)
Paul Brown Stadium, 7:00pm ET (ESPN)

The Ravens got the better of this AFC North rivalry last season, as they finished five games ahead of the Bengals in the division and went to the playoffs. In the offseason Baltimore upgraded their running game with the acquisition of Willis McGahee from the Bills, and they should still have the stifling defense that gave up just 201 points in 16 games last season. Baltimore didn't do much in the preseason, winning just one game.

The Bengals were expected to be a postseason contender in 2006, but they slumped to an 8-8 record and missed the playoffs altogether. Still, Carson Palmer and company managed to put up 373 points in the regular season, and the Bengals will be looking to duplicate that strong offensive performance while improving their defensive play (331 points allowed in 2006). The Bengals also won just one of their four exhibition contests.

Here is the official team injury report for both the Ravens and the Bengals for Week 1 …

                  Baltimore Injuries
Dan Cody LB P-U-P List (knee)
Mike Smith LB P-U-P List (shoulder)

T.J. Houshmandzadeh WR Probable Week 1 (knee)

Baltimore will host the New York Jets next week, while Cincinnati will play in Cleveland.

Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers (-3) (Total 45.5)
                  Monster Park, 10:15pm ET (ESPN)

The Cardinals didn't break out in 2006 (they finished 5-11), and they didn't show an ability to win during the preseason (they finished 0-4), but Matt Leinart's team is still expected to make a little noise in the weak NFC West this season. With a year under his belt and the starting job from the get-go, Leinart will have a real opportunity to lead the Cards to some success in 2007 - success that has long eluded that poor franchise.

The 49ers were just a step back of the playoff contenders in the NFC last season, as they finished the year with a 7-9 record. However, San Francisco scored less points than the other three teams in their division in 2006 (298), and they allowed more points than each of their three NFC West rivals (412), so both areas need work. Alex Smith's development, though, should solve a few issues. The 49ers were 1-3 in the preseason.

Here is the official team injury report for both the Cardinals and the 49ers for Week 1 …

                  Arizona Injuries
Ross Kolodziej DT Out Week 1 (knee)
Alan Branch DT Out Week 1 (hand)
Nick Leckey C Probable Week 1 (knee)

                  San Francisco Injuries
Dashon Goldson S Out Week 1 (elbow)
Donald Strickland CB Probable Week 1 (chest)

The 49ers have a game in St. Louis next week, while the Cards get a visit from Seattle.

Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals (ESPN | 7 PM ET)

The Bengals are trying to turn over a new leaf this season after 10 players were arrested in a 14-month span. They will be without suspended LB Odell Thurman and WR Chris Henry, but it's those players on the field that matter most to Cincy now. "You want guys on your team that you know you can count on, guys that are going to be here to play week in and week out," QB Carson Palmer said, "When it's crunch time, you know they're going to make the right decisions. Whether it's crunch time and they're being peer-pressured to do something outside of football, or it's crunch time on third down and you have to make a play." EDGE: BENGALS
Baltimore hopes RB Willis McGahee is the missing link to the team's offensive woes after rushing for a career-low 990 yard last season with Buffalo. McGahee replaces Jamal Lewis in the backfield, and WR Derrick Mason believes he is an upgrade. "He came here for one reason: to run the ball and make our offense better," Mason said. "I think he did that as soon as he got here." EDGE: RAVENS
Cincinnati is 4-11-1 ATS in its last 16 home games.
Home team is 11-5 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
The OVER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Baltimore's last 8 games.
The UNDER is 8-1 in Baltimore's last 9 season openers.

Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers (ESPN | 10:15 PM ET)

There are high hopes in San Francisco this season for a return to the glory years, and management certainly did its part by bringing in Pro Bowl CB Nate Clements and Pro Bowl S Michael Lewis along with WRs Darrell Jackson and Ashley Lelie. "The new guys that we've added have created a much higher level of competition," 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said. "Our guys are going into this season expecting to win. In our previous two years here, we hoped to win and we prepared to win. Now we have to believe we're going to get this team to the next step, which is to play well enough to challenge for a winning record and the playoffs." EDGE 49ERS
The 49ers are also hoping RB Frank Gore has healed from a broken hand suffered during training camp. Gore had a breakout year last season and is expected to be one of the top backs in the NFL this season. SLIGHT EDGE: 49ERS
New Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt brings a new attitude to the Cardinals, one that his players are hoping changes the team's losing ways. The Cards seem to have built an outstanding offense around QB Matt Leinart, WRs Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald and RB Edgerrin James, but there's only one way to improve and that's to win games. SLIGHT EDGE: CARDINALS
San Francisco is 14-3 ATS in its last 17 games appearances on Monday Night Football.
The UNDER is 6-2 in San Francisco's last 8 games vs. NFC opponents.
The OVER is 28-9 in Arizona's last 37 games.

                          Dunkel Index

                          Washington at Florida
Two teams trying to avoid the cellar in the NL East square off in Miami today. Washington snapped an eight-game road losing streak with a win over the Braves yesterday and comes back with Shaun Hill on the mound this evening. While Hill hasn't picked up a win since coming off the DL, he has pitched well (3.41 ERA) in his five starts since his return. He has also put up decent numbers (1-1, 2.82) in four starts against the Marlins this season. Florida returns home after a 1-5 road trip and will send Scott Olsen to the mound. Like Hill, Olsen hasn't won in a while (August 5), but hasn't pitched well either (0-3, 7.43 ERA in last five starts). With the Nats looking to hold off Florida in the standings, Washington looks like a good underdog pick (+104) according to Dunkel, which has the Nationals favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+104). Here are all of today's games.

                              Monday's streaking starting pitchers

                              HOT

Joel Pineiro (St. Louis Cardinals) - The right-hander made 31 relief appearances with the Boston Red Sox before moving to the Cardinals at the non-waiver trade deadline. The deal by the defending champion Cards has definitely paid off for backers. Pineiro's allowed fewer than four runs in six of his seven starts in a Cards uniform, with St. Louis going 5-2 in those outings. The Cardinals head to Chicago's Wrigley Field as a +127 underdog today.

Fausto Carmona (Cleveland Indians) - The Dominican faced AL Central rivals in each of his last five appearances, with the Tribe winning four of those contests. Cleveland's won the last three times Carmona's taken the mound, including a victory over the same Chicago White Sox team he'll go up against tonight. The Indians enter the game as a -165 road favorite.

Joe Blanton (Oakland Athletics) - The former Kentucky Wildcat gave up four runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts. The Athletics are an impressive 6-1 during that stretch, including four victories as the underdog. The right-hander has allowed just three walks in his last 34 innings of work while striking out 25 in the process. Oakland is listed as a +107 road dog in Seattle against Horacio Ramirez, who is winless in his last three appearances.

                              COLD

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - Making their ace pitch deep into ballgames certainly hasn't helped the Blue Jays win lately. Halladay's last three outings have all been on the road and Toronto lost each of those contests. He pitched 25 innings over that stretch but his team only scored seven times. The Jays head into Motown as -109 favorites and the total is set at 9.

Shawn Hill (Washington Nationals) - The righty's popularity with Nationals backers could be compared to the Republican Party's public standing. Both are at a low ebb, with tons of rooms for improvement. Hill missed most of this season with both elbow and shoulder problems. He's notched a no-decision in his five starts since coming off the DL on Aug. 14, with Washington managing just one victory during that time. The Nats are +103 underdogs for tonight's game against their division rivals, the Florida Marlins.
