    Weekend Sports Preview

    Friday, September 7

Sports fans and bettors have the busiest sports weekend in months ahead of them, with the NFL joining an already packed schedule that includes baseball, college football, CFL, WNBA playoffs, NASCAR and Formula 1 racing.

The NFL kicked off on Thursday night, but the real action begins on Sunday when there are 13 games on the schedule. Highlighting Sunday’s action is a battle between Chicago’s tough defense and San Diego’s (-6) high-powered offense, as well as early divisional showdowns between the NY Giants and Dallas (-6), and New England and the NY Jets (+6.5). The rest of the lengthy Sunday schedule includes Denver at Buffalo (+3), Pittsburgh at Cleveland (+4.5), Philadelphia at Green Bay (+3), Kansas City at Houston (-3), Tennessee at Jacksonville (-6.5), Atlanta at Minnesota (-3), Carolina at St. Louis (-1), Miami at Washington (-3), Detroit at Oakland (-2) and Tampa Bay at Seattle (-6).

The day before the NFL season kicks into high gear, college football takes center stage on Saturday with eight of the Top 10 teams in the nation in action. The best game on the schedule is a Top 10 battle between No. 9 Virginia Tech and No. 2 LSU. The rest of the Top 10 schedule includes No. 3 West Virginia at Marshall (+24), Miami (FL) at No. 5 Oklahoma (-11), No. 10 California at Colorado St. (+14), Troy at No. 4 Florida (-26.5), No. 19 TCU at No. 7 Texas (-9), and No. 5 Wisconsin at UNLV (+25.5).

Up north on the Canadian gridiron this weekend there are games every day. Week 11 kicks off on Friday night with a battle between Alberta rivals when Calgary visits Edmonton (+2.5). On Saturday the Battle of Ontario resumes when Hamilton faces Toronto, while Sunday’s two contests feature B.C. at Montreal (+1) and Saskatchewan at Winnipeg (-3).

On the diamond this weekend the playoff races continue to heat up as the weather gets colder.

In the American League this weekend’s key series includes a key Wild Card matchup between slumping Seattle and Detroit, and a clash of division leaders between Cleveland and the Los Angeles Angels. The rest of the AL schedule includes Boston at Baltimore, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Oakland at Texas, the Yankees at Kansas City and Minnesota at the White Sox.

In the National League there are two series between playoff contenders featuring San Diego at Colorado and St. Louis at Arizona. Other playoff contenders in action include the Cubs at Pittsburgh, Florida at Philadelphia, Houston at the Mets, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, Washington at Atlanta and the Dodgers at San Francisco.

The WNBA Finals resume on Saturday night with Game 2 between Phoenix and Detroit. The Shock hold a 1-0 lead in the series after a 108-100 win in Game 1.

In NASCAR this weekend the most important race of the season for drivers on the Chase bubble takes place at Richmond International Raceway. The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 is the final race before the Chase begins. Heading into this weekend’s race Kevin Harvick occupies the 12th and final place in the Chase standings with Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 13th, 128 points back. When NASCAR first rolled into Richmond earlier this season, Jimmie Johnson took the checkered flag in the Crown Royal Presents the Jim Stewart 400. Johnson is coming off his fifth win of the season last week at California and is a favorite this weekend.

After a quick two-week break, Formula 1 returns to the track on Sunday at Monza in the Italian Grand Prix. With five races remaining in the season Lewis Hamilton leads the points standings with a slim five-point lead over McLaren-Mercedes teammate Fernando Alonso. When F1 last took to the track in Turkey two weeks ago, Felipe Massa finished first with Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen rounding out the podium.

              Write-up

              Friday's college game

Rutgers thrashed Navy LY 34-0 (+2), outgaining Navy 339-161, with a high-powered Middie offense running for just 113 yards. Knights covered six of last eight tries as home fave; they won opener 38-3 last week vs Buffalo, while Navy won 30-19 over the Temple Owls, running ball for 361 yards. Middies are 12-3 as a road dog under Johnson, so they must be respected, but if they can't run the ball any better than they did last year, could be a long night for Navy.

                  Week 2

                  STARS

-Matt Ryan completed 32-of-52 passes for a career-high 408 yards and five touchdowns and Boston College beat Wake Forest 38-28.

-Armanti Edwards threw for 227 yards, three scores and rushed for another in Appalachian State's 34-32 win over Michigan.

-Tim Tebow threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another as Florida crushed Western Kentucky 49-3.

-Nate Kmic rushed for four touchdowns and finished with 151 yards on seven carries in Mount Union's record-breaking 75-7 win over Averett.

-Tashard Choice rushed for a career-high 196 yards and two touchdowns and Georgia Tech beat Notre Dame 33-3.

-Ben Olson threw five touchdown passes in UCLA's 45-17 victory over Stanford.

-Marlon Lucky rushed for a career-high 233 yards and three touchdowns in Nebraska's 52-10 rout of Nevada.

                  - Penn State linebacker Sean Lee led the defense with seven tackles, a forced fumble and a sack in a 59-0 rout of Florida International.

-Jehuu Caulcrick ran for 93 yards and a career-high four touchdowns as Michigan State rolled past Alabama-Birmingham, 55-18.

                  BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE

Julian Rauch's 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds left put Appalachian State ahead of Michigan and Corey Lynch blocked a field goal in the final seconds to seal one of college football's biggest upsets. The two-time defending champions from college football's former Division I-AA beat Michigan 34-32. No Division I-AA team had beaten a team ranked in The Associated Press poll from 1989-2006.

                  HURTING

Ohio State's starting defensive end Lawrence Wilson broke his right leg midway through the second quarter against Youngstown State. ... Illinois quarterback Juice Williams left the game against Missouri early in the second quarter after taking a shot to the head. Williams ran to the right side and took what appeared to be a helmet-to-helmet hit from Missouri's Hardy Ricks. No penalty was called. He was replaced by redshirt freshman Eddie McGee.

                  DYNAMIC DUO

Pat White threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores, and Steve Slaton scored four times in No. 3 West Virginia's 62-24 rout of Western Michigan. It was the Mountaineers' highest scoring game since an 80-7 win over Rutgers in 2001. White finished 10-of-18 for 192 yards and 97 yards rushing, while Slaton finished with 109 yards.

                  IRISH STING

Georgia Tech's defense shut down Notre Dame in a 33-3 victory. The only score for Notre Dame came on a 24-yard field goal by Brandon Walker in the third quarter. The Fighting Irish were held to minus-8 yards rushing.

                  HEALING

After 4 1/2 months of mourning, No. 9 Virginia Tech struggled to beat East Carolina 17-7, even hearing boos from a home crowd that honored a plea not to jeer the Pirates. The Hokies appeared a bit overwhelmed by the burden of what they'll face all year: rallying a school that is desperate to move on from the worst mass shooting in modern American history. The 32 victims of April's campus massacre were honored in a heart-tugging pregame ceremony, which was followed by an uninspiring performance on the field.

                  ONE NITTANY LION

Penn State welcomed 80-year-old Joe Paterno back to the sidelines with a suffocating show of defense. The 17th-ranked Nittany Lions routed Florida International 59-0, as Paterno made his first appearance on the sidelines since breaking his left leg last year at Wisconsin. A cart took Paterno off the field at Wisconsin last November after two players ran into him on the sideline in a violent collision. He spent the next week at home while recovering from surgery - missing a game for the first time since 1977.

                  FLYING HIGH

Matt Ryan threw for five touchdowns - second-most at Boston College only to Doug Flutie - to help the Eagles beat Wake Forest 38-28. Ryan completed 32-of-52 passes, and threw for more than 400 yards against Wake Forest for the second consecutive year. No BC quarterback has thrown for as many as five touchdowns in a game since Flutie connected for six against North Carolina en route to the 1984 Heisman Trophy.

                  REMEMBER WHEN

Ohio State's Jim Tressel was the coach at Youngstown State for 15 years and led the Penguins to four I-AA championships before taking over the Buckeyes in 2001.

                  STRONG IN DEFEAT

Mike Hart rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns in Michigan's 34-32 lost to Appalachian State. ... Anthony Alridge had 22 carries for 205 yards and a touchdown, he also caught three passes for 88 yards and another score but Houston lost to Oregon 48-27. ... Kenneth Moore tied a Wake Forest record with 15 catches - one short of the ACC record held by four players - for 126 yards and a touchdown in the Demon Deacons 38-28 loss to Boston College. ...

                  THE REPLACEMENTS

Todd Boeckman completed 17-of-23 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns, in his first game replacing Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and Ohio State beat Youngstown St. 38-6. ... Notre Dame's replacements for Brady Quinn were shut down in the Fighting Irish's 33-3 loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Demetrius Jones, Evan Sharpley and Jimmy Clausen combined to go 15-for-22 for a 130 yards.

                  SCORING SPREE

Nate Kmic rushed for four touchdowns in the first quarter as Mount Union shattered the NCAA record for points in a quarter, piling up 52 in its 75-7 rout of Averett. The defending Division III champion Purple Raiders broke the previous record of 50 points, scored by Alabama State in the second quarter against Prairie View on Oct. 26, 1991.

                  DEBUTS

                  - Michigan State rolled past Alabama-Birmingham, 55-18, giving Mark Dantonio a win in his debut as Spartan coach. UAB coach Neil Callaway also made his debut.

                  - Randy Shannon's coaching debut at Miami was a breeze. Unranked entering a season for the first time since 1998, Miami beat Marshall 31-3.

                  - Mario Cristobal's debut with Florida International was one to forget as the Golden Pathers were beaten by Penn State 59-0.

                  - UCLA defeated Stanford 45-17 to spoil the debut of Jim Harabaugh.

                  - Jeff Jagodzinski got a victory in his coaching debut as Boston College defeated Wake Forest 38-28.

                  - Air Force easily defeated South Carolina St. 34-3, to earn new coach Troy Calhoun his first victory.

                  STREAKING

With a 34-32 victory over Michigan, Appalachian State has won 15 straight games, the longest streak in the nation. ...

                  SPEAKING

''I wouldn't call it embarrassing because that takes away from them. We're disappointed. I can tell you that. ''It is one of the biggest losses ever, but give all the credit to Appalachian State.''- Michigan's Mike Hart after the Wolverines 34-32 loss to Appalachian State.

Eskimos are 1-4 in last five games; they're 1-2-1 at home, with Calgary game the only setback.

Makin’ Canadian bacon: Week 11 CFL picks

                            Calgary Stampeders at Edmonton Eskimos (+2 , 55 ½)
                            Friday, Sept. 7, 9 p.m. ET

The reasonably close final score from Monday’s game and the shift in venue to “The (former) City of Champions” maintains Calgary’s value to some degree, which is great news.

The Stampeders were easily the better team last week. Calgary’s offense is reaching its potential and the Eskies need more than a five-day break to figure it out. Henry Burris was the best player on the field in each of the last two games and his receiving corps finally has the swagger it lacked earlier this summer.

Edmonton was the beneficiary of Calgary’s multiple turnovers and bad penalties in last Monday’s opening half. What we saw after the break was a dominant Stampeders team.

The visitors won in their last trip to Commonwealth Stadium with a last-second Sandro DeAngelis field goal. That was back when the Stamps were still hammering out some difficulties. They don’t need much more hammering these days. Calgary should roll in Edmonton.

                            Pick: Stampeders -2

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Toronto Argonauts (Off the board at time of publishing)
                            Saturday, Sept. 8, 3 p.m. ET

What a difference Michael Bishop makes to the Argos’ offense. Even without Arland Bruce, Toronto’s offense looks capable of hanging 30 points on any opponent. Hamilton has its share of problems, but defense isn’t one. That means Bishop’s numbers last Monday afternoon were well-earned.

Bettors eyeing the Tabbies with the points must convince themselves that Hamilton’s offense can put at least 15 to 20 points on the board. I don’t think that’s going to happen, even with a healthy Jesse Lumsden. The TiCats’ second-half stats with Jason Maas at quarterback trumped their first-half numbers under Timmy Chang. However, since the Argonauts had a big lead by the time Maas came in, they let him complete a lot of short stuff.

I took the under last week, assuming Rocky Butler would start for Toronto (that’s the problem with publishing a pick for a Monday game on the preceding Thursday). With Bishop’s rust long-gone, the over looks like the play for Saturday’s only contest, though Toronto favored by single digits would also be a find.

Pick: To follow once odds available

BC Lions at Montreal Alouettes (+1, 51)
                            Sunday, Sept. 9, 1 p.m. ET

I really misfired on this matchup last week, but judging by the chatter in the forum, I wasn’t alone. The Lions racked up 275 rushing yards against the league’s second-best run defense en route to scoring 43 points over the game’s final 33 minutes.

BC also kept Anthony Calvillo under constant pressure and kept Jarrett Payton out of the game by building a big lead. In other words, the Lions won both trench battles and proved why the West is the better division last Friday night.

The Als now return to the comfort of Percival Molson Memorial Stadium where they’ve won their last three games. The problem will be stopping a BC team that’s scored 45, 32 and 42 points respectively in its last three road games (2-0-1 straight up, 3-0 against the spread).

Jarious Jackson starts again for the Leos and Montreal can expect another heavy dose of BC’s ground attack. Of course, the club also expected it last week but didn’t do much to stop it.

                            Pick: Lions -1

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-2 ½, 50 ½)
                            Sunday, Sept. 9, 4 p.m. ET

Last Saturday’s clash in Regina delivered on the pre-game hype, but the Riders didn’t deliver a payday in their exciting 31-26 win.

This is the one game this weekend where I expect to see a big difference from the front end of the home-and-home series because Saskatchewan has shown more ability to learn from its mistakes than any other team. The Riders avenged their two losses this season in style, holding the Lions to nine points at BC Place after losing to BC at home earlier in the season and laying 54 points on the Eskimos a week after collapsing at Commonwealth.

Though Saskatchewan didn’t lose the game last Saturday, its young secondary certainly lost the battle against Winnipeg’s aerial attack. Richie Hall, Saskatchewan’s defensive coordinator, won’t stand for such shenanigans. An improved effort from the youngsters next Sunday should let the Riders maintain their title as the CFL’s strongest team.

                            Pick: Roughriders +2 ½

                            Last week: 1-3
                            Year to date: 16-20
