National Football League - Dunkel Index

      NFL
      Dunkel Index

      Week 1

      New Orleans at Indianapolis
The Saints were the best surprise of the 2006 season as Sean Payton took a 3-13 team to 10-6 and a game away from the Super Bowl. New Orleans unveiled an explosive offense behind Drew Brees and Reggie Bush, and should continue the upward trend (from 315 ypg in '05 to 393 ypg last year) with the addition of rookie WR Robert Meachem. But while the excitement has New Orleans a pick by many to get to the Super Bowl this year, they will get a strong test in the opener against the reigning Super Bowl champs. The Colts finally got the postseason monkey off their backs when they overcame a 28-3 halftime deficit against New England in the AFC Championship and cruised through the Super Bowl over a Chicago team that was able to shut down the Saints in the NFC Championship. Playing at home, the Colts were 7-3 ATS last year and 6-1 when favored by single digits. A 6-point Vegas favorite, the Colts look like a good pick to cover according to Dunkel, which has Indianapolis favored by 13. Dunkel Pick: Indianapolis (-6). Here are all of this week's picks.

            Write-up

            Week 1 2007 NFL season

            Thursday, September 6

Saints @ Colts-- Defending champ Colts open defense of title by hosting Saints, team Manning's father starred for, and Cinderella team in '06, losing NFC title game. Indy hammered Saints 55-21 in last meeting, with Manning tossing six TDs, but Saints won last two visits here ('96,'03). Saints won six of last seven road openers despite being underdog in six of those games. Colts won last four home openers, by 26-14-7-19 points, scoring 32.9 ppg.

            Sunday, September 9

Chiefs @ Texans-- Two teams headed in opposite directions, as Chiefs are in disarray, with Huard winning QB derby by default, while Texans imported Schaub te replace Carr at QB, as they try and move past mistake of not drafting hometown hero Young. Houston lost last four home openers, three by 14+ points. KC is 4-2 in last six road openers, but lost couple of offensive linemen, and star RB Johnson just got into camp. Chiefs, originally called the Dallas Texans, won last two visits here, 42-14/45-17.

Broncos @ Bills-- Denver won last four series games, with totals in last three 43+; they won last two visits here, 23-20ot/28-17, but lost last three road openers, with four of last five staying under total. Old friend Travis Henry returns to Buffalo, trying to revive Bronco running game. Buffalo is 4-9 in last 13 openers, 2-4 in last six at home; six of their last eight home openers stayed under the total. Interesting to see how Cal rookie Lynch does running ball.

Steelers @ Browns-- Steelers have third coach in last 39 seasons, vs team that has major confusion at QB- they actually flipped a coin to determine starter for summer game. Pittsburgh won seven series games in row, with five of last six wins by 11+ points- they won last six visits to Lake Erie, and converted on 16 of 28 third down plays vs Browns LY, scoring six TDs on 20 drives, while the Browns had one TD on 19 drives, with seven 3/outs. They've lost seven of last eight home openers, with four of the last five losses by five or less points.

Titans @ Jaguars-- Jax outrushed Titans 380-149 LY, allowing the Titans to convert just five of 26 on third down, but they lost big game in Week 15 to Tennessee (24-17), even though Titans had only 98 total yards, and were 0 for 8 on third down. Titans lost last two visits here, 40-13/37-7, and lost six of last seven openers on road; they're 3-9 vs spread as dog in road openers, losing last two by combined score of 74-14. Jags covered last six openers at home; they covered in Week 1 the last eight years.

Panthers @ Rams-- First visit to this site for Carolina since win in OT in '03 playoffs that propelled them to NFC title; Panthers won last three series games, 15-0/20-7/29-23ot- they held Rams to just 31 rushing yards in LY's game, dominating total yards (411-111) holding St Louis to eight first downs. Rams upgraded offense by adding Bennett, McMichael; they won last four series openers, all by eight or less points. In their history, Carolina is 1-3 in Week 1 road games-- they lost their last three season openers, all as a home favorite.

Eagles @ Packers-- Philly won last five series games, with home side winning nine of last ten in series; Eagles lost three of last 4 visits to Lambeau, but haven't been here since '03. LY, Pack led
9-7 at half in Philly, but lost 31-9, as Iggles ran ball for 131 yards, and has 12-yard advantage in field position. Pack lost their last 4 home openers, covered just one of last eight, allowing 25.8 ppg in last four. Eagles are 6-2 vs spread as favorite in Week 1; under is 7-2 in their last nine road openers.

Falcons @ Vikings-- Post-Vick era begins with Harrington at QB for Atlanta. Home side lost four of last five series games, as the Falcons won last two visits here, both in OT (one of wins was in playoffs). Vikings won three of last four home openers; under is 13-5-1 in their last 19, as well as 12-6 in Falcons' last 18 openers on road. Atlanta started out 1-0 last four years, won three of last four road openers. Minnesota figures to try and run ball, with a young QB (Jackson) and solid rookie runner (Peterson).

Dolphins @ Redskins-- Cameron/Green combo used to work for Redskins, now 37-year old Green tries to revive career in Miami, after serious concussion caused him to miss half of last season in KC. Home side won last five series games, with Dolphins' last W here back in '84. Skins won four of last five home openers, with last four staying under- they're 2-6-1 vs spread last nine times as a favorite in home opener. Fish lost last three road openers; nine of their last thirteen road openers stayed under the total.

Patriots @ Jets-- New England defense has taken hits recently, as Harrison, Seymour both out for first month, but Belichick is 7-1 in last eight series games, winning last six at this site. Last season, Pats won two of three vs Jets, outrushing Gang Green 448-208. although Jets did run ball for 117 yards in game they won. Jets were 17-31 on 3rd down during season vs Pats, but only 3-11 in playoff loss. Over is 13-5-1 in last nineteen Jet home openers, and 5-2-2 in New England's last nine road openers.

Buccaneers @ Seahawks-- Seattle won six of last seven in series, with last four series totals 30 or less; Hawks won 23-7 last year in Week 17 (+3), winning 60.9% of third down plays, having 12-yard edge in field position, piling up 28 first downs and 72-49 edge in plays run. Garcia is latest QB for Bucs, who won six of last eight road openers (under is 6-0 both in Seattle home openers, and Buc road openers). Seahawks won last four home openers, allowing just 9.5 ppg, winning by 17-34-3-11 points.

Bears @ Chargers-- Norv Turner debuts as Bolts' HC, while his brother Ron calls plays for Bears. Charger LB coach Rivera was Chicago DC for last three years, was let go by Chicago after he tried to get head coaching job, so this has to be special game for him, even with hated Patriots on deck. Bears won last four games in this seldom-played series; this is their first visit here since '99. San Diego scored 24-28-40 points in last three season openers. Of late, teams that lose Super Bowl have stumbled the next year.

Lions @ Raiders-- Fine piece of scheduling, as two worst teams in '06 meet in '07 opener, guaranteeing one of them a happy start to this season. Home side won six of last eight series games, as Lions are 0-4 at this site. Raiders acquired QB McCown from the Lions in offseason; will he help Oakland defend Martz Madness? Lions expected to be more explosive in second year with Martz as OC, but Lions just 24-72 in six years under inept GM Millen; hard to have much confidence backing them on road, even against dysfunctional Raider team that cut its 3rd round pick this week.

Giants @ Cowboys-- Both offense dominated series games in '06, as teams combined to convert 56% of third down plays in teams' meetings. This was game last year where Romo replaced Bledsoe after bad INT right before half. Giants were +3 in turnovers, ran ball for 281 yards, while Dallas averaged 7.2/7.3 yards per pass attempt in two games. Giants are 10-6 in last 16 series games, 4-3 in last seven visits here. Dallas started 0-1 six of last seven years under is 13-5-1 in their last nineteen home openers. Can Jacobs be adequate replacement for backstabbing former RB Barber?

            Monday, September 10

Ravens @ Bengals-- Baltimore was 11-31 on third down last year vs Bengals, scoring only one TD in seven trips to Cincinnati red zone; they hope addition of McGahee improves those numbers. Bengals won four of last five series games, with Ravens losing in last two visits here, 42-29/13-7, but Cincy OL took some hits last offseason, which could hamper formerly high-powered offense. Ravens lost five of last six road openers, with under 8-1 in last 9 road openers. Bengals won last three home openers, by 3,29,17.

Cardinals @ 49ers-- Since losing pair of OT tilts to Niners in 2005, Cardinals won last four series games, winning last two visits here 17-10/26-20; six of last seven series totals were 45+. Arizona won 64.6% of third down plays in series LY, with Niners just 2-18 on third down, but Cardinals have been awful road team, losing last five road openers by 13-point average. Arizona is 1-12 in last 13 Week 1 road games. Niners covered their last four openers, with underdog covering seven of their last nine. At age 23, 49er QB Smith is same age as Hawai'i's Heisman hopeful Colt Brennan.

New Orleans Saints at Indianapolis Colts (8:30 PM ET)

The Colts suffered some severe losses on defense since they won the Super Bowl, most notably DT Anthony McFarland's knee injury that is expected to keep him out the entire season. McFarland was one of the keys to Indy's Super Bowl run along with Pro Bowl LB Cato June and starting CBs Jason David and Nick Harper, all of whom are playing with other teams this year. In fact, David will be playing for the Saints and should be able to give his teammates some good advice on how to stop Peyton Manning since he went against him everyday in practice. EDGE: SAINTS
New Orleans QB Drew Brees enjoyed success in his last trip to the RCA Dome, ending Indy's 13-game winning streak to start the 2005 season. Brees led the Chargers to a 26-17 victory, completing 22-of-33 passes for 255 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. SLIGHT EDGE: SAINTS
Manning is 1-2 straight-up against his father's former team and smoked the Saints in the last meeting, completing 20-of-25 passes for 314 yards with six touchdowns in a 55-21 rout back on September 28th, 2003. This year's New Orleans team is a completely different outfit, but insiders believe the 2007 Colts could be the most explosive team offensively in team history. EDGE: COLTS & OVER
Defending Super Bowl champs are 5-0-1 ATS in Week 1.
The Saints were 7-1 ATS on the road last season.
The UNDER is 11-5 in Indy's last 16 games on turf.

                Saints vs. Colts

The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts get the new season started on Thursday night in a battle between two of the league’s best offenses.

The Colts begin their Super Bowl title defense behind Peyton Manning and their high-scoring offense. Manning threw for 4,397 yards with 31 touchdowns and a career-low nine interceptions last season, and there’s no reason he won’t be just as good this year with his top two targets in Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne still around. Manning may see an increase in defensive pressure this season after all-pro offensive lineman Tarik Glenn retired. The loss of Glenn could also negatively impact the running game early on. With Dominic Rhodes moving on to Oakland, sophomore Joseph Addai will carry the rushing load after an impressive rookie campaign.

On defense the Colts also have some questions to answer after their already shaky D lost some key components in the offseason. Gone are linebacker Cato June as well as corners Nick Harper and Jason David, and DT Anthony McFarland is out for the season after being placed on IR. The loss of Harper and David could hurt the Colts’ pass defense as inexperienced Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden are expected to fill the starting jobs. The Colts’ biggest problem on defense last year was stopping the run. Indianapolis allowed a league-high 173 yards per game on the ground last season. The Colts are hoping that improves with hard-hitting safety Bob Sanders back at full strength. The all-important Sanders missed 12 games due to injury last season.

The Saints are coming off their best season in years after they surprised everyone by flashing one of the best offenses in the NFL and winning the NFC South. Quarterback Drew Brees proved to be an excellent signing after he led the league with 4,418 passing yards. Brees should put up big numbers again this season while passing to Marques Colston, Devery Henderson and first round pick Robert Meachem. Brees can also rely on running back Reggie Bush, who led the Saints with 88 receptions for 742 yards. Bush will also be an important factor in the running game while sharing the carries with power-back Deuce McAllister. The super duo combined for 1,622 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns last season.

On defense the Saints may not have the big names to stack up next to their offense, but they were much better than most people give them credit for. Despite registering only 11 interceptions last season the Saints were very good against the pass, finishing third in the league after allowing only 178.4 yards per game through the air. Up front the Saints will rely heavily on Will Smith and Charles Grant, while the newly-signed Brian Simmons should bolster the linebackers.

The Colts and Saints haven’t met up since 2003 when Indianapolis steamrolled the then-awful Saints 55-21 as a 2.5-point favorite. Peyton Manning threw a career-high six touchdown passes in that game, but he’ll have trouble repeating that amazing feat against a much better Saints squad. With Thursday’s game taking place in Indianapolis, the Colts are a 6-point favorite.

                  Week 2

                  Oregon State at Cincinnati
The Beavers have one of the best running backs in the country in Yvenson Bernard and he looked as good as advertised in OSU's 24-7 win over Utah in the opener. Bernard ran for 165 yards and two TDs, which helped the Beavers overcome some shaky play at QB where Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevao combined for just 11-of-28 and 119 yards (plus two INTs). While that was enough to get OSU past Utah at home, it could come up short on the road in Cincinnati on Thursday night. New coach Brian Kelly has Bearcat fans excited about the season and he used a five-receiver set to run up a 59-3 rout over I-AA SE Missouri State, which was Cincy's most lopsided victory in 30 years. Wake Forest transfer Matt Mauk looked good at QB (18-of-27 for 244 yards) and gives the Bearcats a potentially explosive offense. Cincinnati showed how tough it can be at home in a 30-11 win over Rutgers late last season and looks like a good underdog pick (+4) according to Dunkel, which has the game even. Dunkel Pick: Cincinnati (+4). Here are all of this week's picks.

                        Write-up

                        Thursday's college football information

Louisville covered 15 of last 17 tries as home favorite; last year, they waxed Middle Tennessee 44-17 (-29), outgaining MTSU by a 526-280 margin. Blue Raiders lost Sun Belt game last week at Florida Atlantic (27-14); they were outgained 411-217, so likely they're out of their league here, as Louisville will be out to show senior QB Brohm is Heisman material before ESPN cameras. in its opener, Louisville pounded in I-AA team, so hard to tell how good they are, but they've been strong home favorite in past.

Last time Oregon State came east of Mississippi, they lost 63-27 at Louisville; last week, Beavers were tied 7-7 at half at home vs Utah, but pulled away for 24-7 win. OSU was just 12-30 passing but they outrushed Utes 241-18- they're using two QBs, so they have yet to decide on starter. Both teams rarely get on national stage, so should expect wide-open show. Cincinnati runs spread offense behind coach Kelly, who won big in Division II, and got Central Michigan to bowl last year.

                        Friday's college game

Rutgers thrashed Navy LY 34-0 (+2), outgaining Navy 339-161, with a high-powered Middie offense running for just 113 yards. Knights covered six of last eight tries as home fave; they won opener 38-3 last week vs Buffalo, while Navy won 30-19 over the Temple Owls, running ball for 361 yards. Middies are 12-3 as a road dog under Johnson, so they must be respected, but if they can't run the ball any better than they did last year, could be a long night for Navy.

-Nate Kmic rushed for four touchdowns and finished with 151 yards on seven carries in Mount Union's record-breaking 75-7 win over Averett.

-Tashard Choice rushed for a career-high 196 yards and two touchdowns and Georgia Tech beat Notre Dame 33-3.

-Ben Olson threw five touchdown passes in UCLA's 45-17 victory over Stanford.

-Marlon Lucky rushed for a career-high 233 yards and three touchdowns in Nebraska's 52-10 rout of Nevada.

                          - Penn State linebacker Sean Lee led the defense with seven tackles, a forced fumble and a sack in a 59-0 rout of Florida International.

-Jehuu Caulcrick ran for 93 yards and a career-high four touchdowns as Michigan State rolled past Alabama-Birmingham, 55-18.

                          BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE

Julian Rauch's 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds left put Appalachian State ahead of Michigan and Corey Lynch blocked a field goal in the final seconds to seal one of college football's biggest upsets. The two-time defending champions from college football's former Division I-AA beat Michigan 34-32. No Division I-AA team had beaten a team ranked in The Associated Press poll from 1989-2006.

                          HURTING

Ohio State's starting defensive end Lawrence Wilson broke his right leg midway through the second quarter against Youngstown State. ... Illinois quarterback Juice Williams left the game against Missouri early in the second quarter after taking a shot to the head. Williams ran to the right side and took what appeared to be a helmet-to-helmet hit from Missouri's Hardy Ricks. No penalty was called. He was replaced by redshirt freshman Eddie McGee.

                          DYNAMIC DUO

Pat White threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores, and Steve Slaton scored four times in No. 3 West Virginia's 62-24 rout of Western Michigan. It was the Mountaineers' highest scoring game since an 80-7 win over Rutgers in 2001. White finished 10-of-18 for 192 yards and 97 yards rushing, while Slaton finished with 109 yards.

                          IRISH STING

Georgia Tech's defense shut down Notre Dame in a 33-3 victory. The only score for Notre Dame came on a 24-yard field goal by Brandon Walker in the third quarter. The Fighting Irish were held to minus-8 yards rushing.

                          HEALING

After 4 1/2 months of mourning, No. 9 Virginia Tech struggled to beat East Carolina 17-7, even hearing boos from a home crowd that honored a plea not to jeer the Pirates. The Hokies appeared a bit overwhelmed by the burden of what they'll face all year: rallying a school that is desperate to move on from the worst mass shooting in modern American history. The 32 victims of April's campus massacre were honored in a heart-tugging pregame ceremony, which was followed by an uninspiring performance on the field.

                          ONE NITTANY LION

Penn State welcomed 80-year-old Joe Paterno back to the sidelines with a suffocating show of defense. The 17th-ranked Nittany Lions routed Florida International 59-0, as Paterno made his first appearance on the sidelines since breaking his left leg last year at Wisconsin. A cart took Paterno off the field at Wisconsin last November after two players ran into him on the sideline in a violent collision. He spent the next week at home while recovering from surgery - missing a game for the first time since 1977.

                          FLYING HIGH

Matt Ryan threw for five touchdowns - second-most at Boston College only to Doug Flutie - to help the Eagles beat Wake Forest 38-28. Ryan completed 32-of-52 passes, and threw for more than 400 yards against Wake Forest for the second consecutive year. No BC quarterback has thrown for as many as five touchdowns in a game since Flutie connected for six against North Carolina en route to the 1984 Heisman Trophy.

                          REMEMBER WHEN

Ohio State's Jim Tressel was the coach at Youngstown State for 15 years and led the Penguins to four I-AA championships before taking over the Buckeyes in 2001.

                          STRONG IN DEFEAT

Mike Hart rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns in Michigan's 34-32 lost to Appalachian State. ... Anthony Alridge had 22 carries for 205 yards and a touchdown, he also caught three passes for 88 yards and another score but Houston lost to Oregon 48-27. ... Kenneth Moore tied a Wake Forest record with 15 catches - one short of the ACC record held by four players - for 126 yards and a touchdown in the Demon Deacons 38-28 loss to Boston College. ...

                          THE REPLACEMENTS

Todd Boeckman completed 17-of-23 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns, in his first game replacing Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and Ohio State beat Youngstown St. 38-6. ... Notre Dame's replacements for Brady Quinn were shut down in the Fighting Irish's 33-3 loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Demetrius Jones, Evan Sharpley and Jimmy Clausen combined to go 15-for-22 for a 130 yards.

                          SCORING SPREE

Nate Kmic rushed for four touchdowns in the first quarter as Mount Union shattered the NCAA record for points in a quarter, piling up 52 in its 75-7 rout of Averett. The defending Division III champion Purple Raiders broke the previous record of 50 points, scored by Alabama State in the second quarter against Prairie View on Oct. 26, 1991.

                          DEBUTS

                          - Michigan State rolled past Alabama-Birmingham, 55-18, giving Mark Dantonio a win in his debut as Spartan coach. UAB coach Neil Callaway also made his debut.

                          - Randy Shannon's coaching debut at Miami was a breeze. Unranked entering a season for the first time since 1998, Miami beat Marshall 31-3.

                          - Mario Cristobal's debut with Florida International was one to forget as the Golden Pathers were beaten by Penn State 59-0.

                          - UCLA defeated Stanford 45-17 to spoil the debut of Jim Harabaugh.

                          - Jeff Jagodzinski got a victory in his coaching debut as Boston College defeated Wake Forest 38-28.

                          - Air Force easily defeated South Carolina St. 34-3, to earn new coach Troy Calhoun his first victory.

                          STREAKING

With a 34-32 victory over Michigan, Appalachian State has won 15 straight games, the longest streak in the nation. ...

                          SPEAKING

''I wouldn't call it embarrassing because that takes away from them. We're disappointed. I can tell you that. ''It is one of the biggest losses ever, but give all the credit to Appalachian State.''- Michigan's Mike Hart after the Wolverines 34-32 loss to Appalachian State.

Oregon State at Cincinnati (ESPN | 7:30 PM ET)

Oregon State showed last Thursday why most experts predicted its defense to be the strength of the team with eight starters returning and a large cast of veteran reserves. The Beavers held Utah, one of the nation’s most prolific offenses, to just 196 yards and seven points. It was only the second time in 39 games the Utes failed to reach double figures and its total yardage was 172 yards fewer than they average last season. EDGE: OSU & UNDER
For the first time in modern history and the first time during the Mike Riley era, Oregon State opened the season with alternating quarterbacks. Sophomore left-hander Sean Canfield completed eight of 19 for 87 yards, while Lyle Moevao was 3 of 9 for 32 yards. SLIGHT EDGE: CINCINNATI
Cincinnati accumulated 615 yards of total offense in its 59-3 season opening victory over Southeast Missouri State. The 615 yards is the third-highest total offense total in program history. EDGE: CINCINNATI & OVER
Over the last four seasons, the Bearcats are 18-6 when playing at Nippert Stadium. They posted a 6-1 mark in 2006, including a 30-11 victory over then-No. 7 Rutgers, the highest ranked foe ever to fall at Cincinnati. EDGE: CINCINNATI
The Beavers are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games as road favorites.

Thursday night lights: Oregon State at Cincinnati

The matchup: Oregon State Beavers at Cincinnati Bearcats

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. ET from Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati, OH

                              The line: OSU -3 ½, total 44 ½ points

Weather forecast: The temperature should be slightly above 80 degrees at kickoff, with a 20 percent chance of precipitation. A slight southerly wind will drop and relative humidity will rise as the game goes on.

                              Key injuries

Oregon State – All-American offensive guard Jeremy Perry is out after injuring his leg last week against Utah. Potential All-American receiver / returner Sammie Stroughter, on the other hand, could suit up on Thursday according to head coach Mike Riley. Stroughter will travel with the team and his teammates are hoping can get past his grief issues to boost the Beavers’ offense and special teams.

Cincinnati – All-Big East defensive tackle Terrill Byrd returns from academic suspension on Thursday, a huge addition to the ‘D’ considering Oregon State’s running game. Sophomore tight end Kazeem Alli was on the field for about 20 snaps last week, his first competitive action since tearing his ACL in the spring. Head coach Brian Kelly said Alli can expect a bigger workload going forward.

Three reasons why Oregon State could cover

                              1. Yvenson Bernard: Utah knew that stopping Bernard would stop the Stroughter-less Beavers last Thursday. The Utes couldn’t do it, as Bernard ran for 165 yards and a pair of majors on the ground and was a dependable safety valve for the young OSU quarterbacks out of the backfield.

                              2. Underrated defense: Only undersized outside linebacker Derrick Doggett received any preseason All-Conference love, but holding the Utes to seven points last week underlines the Beavers’ defensive athleticism.

                              3. Special teams could be truly special: Kicker Alexis Serna is one of the nation’s finest, with 63 field goals at Oregon State and a career accuracy rate exceeding 80 percent. Stroughter, who returned three punts for touchdowns last year, would be a huge boost for the Beavers if he lines up to return kicks on Thursday.

Three reasons why Cincinnati could cover

                              1. Quarterback security: Last year, the Bearcats wavered when selecting their starting QB. No more, as former Ohio prep star Ben Mauk returned from his ACC sabbatical to assert a firm grip on the gig. Contrast with OSU, going through its own two-head quarterback difficulties in 2007.

                              2. Home field means something now: Cincinnati lost its Big East opener last year to Pitt, but that was its only home defeat all year. The Bearcats won and covered the spread in their remaining five home games, including lopsided wins as an underdog over both South Florida and Rutgers.

                              3. Defensive game-breaker: Cornerback Mike Mickens picked off a pair of passes last week and returned one for a touchdown to win Big East Defensive Player of the Week honors. Mickens is a two-time All-Big East honoree and is a shut-down corner headed to the pros after his Cincinnati tenure.

Cool stat of the day: The Beavers have won and covered the spread whenever Bernard has topped 100 rushing yards since the start of 2006. Oregon State is 7-0 straight-up and 6-0 against the spread when its star tailback tops the century mark, which he did in four of OSU’s last five road games last year.

                              Key quote

"We know (Bernard) is the featured player," Brian Kelly told the Cincinnati Post this week. "But they're like any other team in the country - they know they just can't run the ball.”

“(Sean) Canfield is going to be their starter, and they're going to have to throw the ball down the field, whether Sammie Stroughter plays or not. It won't impact the game to the level where we have to change the game plan."

                              Pick: Cincinnati +3 ½
