    Seattle at NY Yankees
The Yankees got their bats going last night in a 12-2 win over the Mariners that pushed their lead in the Wild Card to two games over Seattle. But they could need more than that today with rookie Phil Hughes on the mound. After a solid start, Hughes has been roughed up in each of his last three starts and is coming off a 9-1 loss to Tampa Bay in which he lasted just 4 1/3 innings. The Yankees look like a shaky favorite (-160) according to Dunkel, which has Seattle favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Seattle (+152). Here are all of today's games.

      Streaking Pitchers

      Wednesday, September 5

      HOT

Andy Sonnanstine (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) – Sonnanstine has won three of his last four starts. He struck out 17, walked two, and posted a 4.50 ERA in his last three games. The right-hander is coming off a brilliant start against the Yankees, giving up two hits and striking out five in eight shutout innings. The D-Rays are –143 favorites tonight against the Orioles (+135).

Scott Baker (Minnesota Twins) – Baker is 2-1 in his last three games with a 2.08 ERA. He is also coming off a very hot outing, taking a perfect game into the ninth inning against Kansas City. He gave up one hit, struck out nine and walked only one batter for his second straight victory. Baker has been effective in the Metrodome, posting a 1.84 ERA in his last six starts. The Twins (+115) hope he can continue this trend as they try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Indians (-123).

Kyle Kendrick (Philadelphia Phillies) – The 23-year-old rookie is coming off a hot August, where he posted a 3.50 ERA is six starts becoming the first NL rookie to win eight games. He is going for his fourth consecutive win this afternoon and looking to extend an already perfect 6-0 home record. The Phillies are +143 underdogs this afternoon against the Braves (-151).

      COLD

Sergio Mitre (Florida Marlins) – Mitre is 0-2 in his last three starts and he has twice as many walks as he does strikeouts in that stretch with a ridiculously high 11.57 ERA. Last outing he pitched 3 1/3 innings, and hit three batsmen in one of those innings alone. Mitre has given up at least five earned runs in four straight outings making it no surprise the Marlins are +108 underdogs tonight against the Nats (-116).

Ted Lilly (Chicago Cubs) – The lefty has been in a rut the past few weeks. He is winless in his last three starts and has given up a homer in each of his last seven games. He was roughed up last outing, throwing 38 pitches in the first inning alone, giving up five hits and walking four. Lilly goes for his first win in nearly a month tonight against the L.A. Dodgers (+138).

            Wednesday, September 5

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees (-161, 10 ½)

There are lots of reasons to go against the Yankees in this game, not the least of which are the four straight losses Philip Hughes has collected in his most recent starts. He’s walked 12 batters over that span and had to be removed in the fifth inning of his last start after allowing five runs to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in an eventual 9-1 loss as a -271 favorite. And then there’s Seattle starter Jarrod Washburn, who has a decent 4.23 ERA on the road this season and an impressive record against the Yankees over his career.

But come on, this is Yankee Stadium. The Bombers are 46-27 at home this season, the second-best home record in baseball. And they’re facing an ice-cold Seattle club that probably has less confidence than any team in the major leagues right now. Anytime you can get the Yanks at home for this price, you’ve got to take it.

            Pick: Yankees -161

Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox (-161, 9 ½)

A funny thing happens when these two teams get together. Even though both clubs are among baseball’s best performers at their respective home parks, in the season series between these AL East rivals, the home team is just 5-9. Weird, huh?

In the current series, Boston has bucked this trend somewhat by taking the first two games at Fenway Park, but today Toronto will put its best road starter on the mound when Shaun Marcum takes his 2.65 road ERA to Boston. The Jays won Marcum’s only other start at Fenway earlier this year in a 6-5 victory in July. The Toronto batters also love Fenway, where they’ve averaged 8.8 runs per game this year.

            Pick: Blue Jays +151

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks (-121, 9 ½)

Jake Peavy? An underdog on the road? Where do I sign up?

Not to overstate the importance of starting pitching, but when you’re talking about the best pitcher in baseball – a guy that almost always goes seven innings and whiffs more batters than anyone else in the National League – you can’t ignore the value.

Peavy is 8-0 on the road with a 1.22 ERA. He’s struck out 31 batters in his last three starts (all wins) and here’s the kicker: he hasn’t been an underdog all season. Against a Diamondbacks club that's hitting just .235 over its last 10 games, that sounds like a bargain.

            Pick: Padres +116

                  Week 2

                  Oregon State at Cincinnati
The Beavers have one of the best running backs in the country in Yvenson Bernard and he looked as good as advertised in OSU's 24-7 win over Utah in the opener. Bernard ran for 165 yards and two TDs, which helped the Beavers overcome some shaky play at QB where Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevao combined for just 11-of-28 and 119 yards (plus two INTs). While that was enough to get OSU past Utah at home, it could come up short on the road in Cincinnati on Thursday night. New coach Brian Kelly has Bearcat fans excited about the season and he used a five-receiver set to run up a 59-3 rout over I-AA SE Missouri State, which was Cincy's most lopsided victory in 30 years. Wake Forest transfer Matt Mauk looked good at QB (18-of-27 for 244 yards) and gives the Bearcats a potentially explosive offense. Cincinnati showed how tough it can be at home in a 30-11 win over Rutgers late last season and looks like a good underdog pick (+4) according to Dunkel, which has the game even. Dunkel Pick: Cincinnati (+4). Here are all of this week's picks.
