    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Clemson has now beaten Florida State in four of last five meetings; good start for young QB Harper.

-- Roger Clemens hurt his elbow, will have MRI; Bronx lost 10 of his last 15 starts. A solid waste of $20 million.

-- Mariners' series in Bronx is pivotal in Wild Card race, so Seattle's 7-1 win was critical for them to open series.

-- Just as quickly as Phillies got within two games of Mets, they've fallen five games back, as New York appears to be set for playoff spot next month.

-- Devil Rays didn't sell off any players at trade deadline in July, and have improved as result; they've won nine of last eleven games, and might not finish last this season.

-- Check out SportsCenter for truly horrendous call at first base by inept umpire Nauert; not only does Crawford beat throw, the 1st baseman's foot is way off the base; why do horrible umpires not get suspended, or do they?

Tuesday's List of 13: Our first college football List of 13.....

This list, for now, isn't a ranking of top 13 teams; we know if Florida and USC played Central Florida, UCF would lose, so what this is is really recognition of things that happened over the weekend. Keep that in mind before you call me an idiot, then feel free to do so.................

      13) Appalachian State-- Had to give them props after the win at Michigan became top story of huge sports weekend.

      12) Colorado-- Ol' Dan Hawkins must have been proud of his boy Saturday; young Cody is a poised QB, and Buffs won in OT against their in-state rivals Saturday, 31-28.

      11) Nebraska-- Waxed Nevada 52-10; now venture down to Wake Forest to face banged-up Demon Deacons.

      10) Georgia Tech-- 33-3 in South Bend is impressive, even if Irish are rebuilding.

      9) Wyoming- Crushed Virginia 23-3, outgaining Yahoos by a 474-108 margin, holding them to five first downs. Impressive.

      8) Central Florida-- Led 25-3 at halftime vs NC State, held on for 25-23 win; great start for O'Leary's team.

      7) Boston College-- Got down 14-0 in first 5:00 to Wake, but had poise, and pulled away late. Ryan is a solid QB.

      6) Georgia-- Surprisingly easy 35-14 home win vs Oklahoma State has them happy between the hedges.

      5) Wisconsin-- Handled pretty good Washington St club by 21 at home. Coaching change hasn't hurt the Badgers.

      4) Arkansas-- Beating a spunky Troy team by 20 isn't a great win, but the margin is good. Troy has hung close with teams from BCS conferences in recent seasons.

      3) LSU-- After sluggish start, won an SEC road game 45-0.

      2) Clemson-- You start season with a big game on a Monday night, you win the game, you get put high on this list.

      1) California-- Dismantled Tennessee at home, 45-31, getting TDs on both punt return and defense, avenging last year's L in Knoxville. We need an SEC-Pac-10 bowl game this year; it has been almost 20 years since the last one.

Michigan, Rice been disqualified from this list for rest of 2007 for losing to a I-AA team.

            Gameday
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Tuesday MLB Gameday

Chien-Ming Wang will lead the New York Yankees against Horacio Ramirez and the Seattle Mariners in one of Tuesday night's key matchups. Here is your MLB Gameday:

Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox, 7:05pm ET
Roy Halladay (14-6, 3.87 ERA) vs. Josh Beckett (16-6, 3.29 ERA)

Halladay went nine innings against the Athletics in his last start, but he was stuck with a no-decision after giving up four earned runs on seven hits and six walks in that outing. The righthander, in fact, hasn't picked up a win since August 14, when the beat the Angels. In his three starts since then Halladay has gone 0-1 despite tossing 26 innings.

Beckett was tagged for a loss by the Yankees last time out, allowing four earned runs on 13 hits over 6 2-3 innings of work. The righthander had gone 3-0 with a no-decision over his previous four starts, surrendering a combined seven earned runs in those outings. Beckett currently has 16 victories on the season, and his ERA is a solid 3.29.

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees, 7:05pm ET
            Horacio Ramirez (8-4, 6.55 ERA) vs. Chien-Ming Wang (16-6, 3.79 ERA)

Ramirez is winless in his last two starts for the Mariners, but the lefthander gave his team a chance to grab the victory in each of those games. On August 25 versus the Rangers, Ramirez gave up three unearned runs on four hits over 5 2-3 innings of work. On August 30 versus the Indians he surrendered three earned runs over 5 2-3 innings.

Wang has won three straight decisions for the Yankees as they try to hold off the Mariners in the Wild Card race. The righthander beat the Tigers twice on August 19 and August 25, holding them to four earned runs on 14 hits in 14 innings of work in those two outings. On August 30 versus the rival BoSox, Wang tossed seven one-hit innings.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs, 8:05pm ET
Brad Penny (14-4, 2.88 ERA) vs. Steve Trachsel (6-8, 4.48 ERA)

Penny has only allowed more than three earned runs once in his past six outings, but the righthander is also just 1-2 with three no-decisions over that time. Penny is coming off a rough outing versus the Nationals in which he gave up six earned runs on eight hits over five innings of work. Penny's ERA remains below 3.00 at 2.88 on the season.

The Cubs acquired Trachsel from the Orioles last week. For Baltimore the righthander had a 6-8 record and a 4.48 ERA, with just 45 strikeouts in 140 2-3 innings of work. Trachsel, though, is coming off back-to-back solid outings versus the Twins and Devil Rays in which he allowed just two earned runs on nine hits over 13 1-3 innings pitched.

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks, 9:40pm ET
Chris Young (9-5, 2.38 ERA) vs. Doug Davis (12-11, 4.09 ERA)

Young returned from a sore back to pitch against the Diamondbacks on August 30, but the righthander was knocked around for five earned runs on two hits and six walks in only 4 1-3 innings of work. Young hasn't been able to add to his victory total since July 19, when he beat the Phillies. On the season Young is now 9-5, and his ERA is at 2.38.

Davis has earned the win in five of his past six starts, and he's 7-1 since the All-Star Break. Against the Padres on August 30 the lefthander went 6 2-3 innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits while striking out seven batters. Davis' only loss in the month of August came against the Brewers, when he gave up six runs over two innings.

              Tuesday’s MLB betting notes

              Welcome Backe

The expanded roster ushered in Houston Astros pitcher Brandon Backe’s return to the bigs. The right-hander will make his season debut on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers after missing the entire year recovering from Tommy John surgery.

"You have to be real careful with him," interim manager Cecil Cooper told reporters. "You've got to make sure to give him enough time to bounce back."

Backe, who will be limited to a pitch count between 80 and 100, made six rehab starts in Triple-A Round Rock before the callup. He becomes the sixth man in the Astros' growing rotation. The 29-year-old told reporters he isn’t quite 100 percent yet but that he did throw over 80 pitches in his final minor league start.

In 2005, Backe started 25 games for Houston and had a 10-8 record. He was 3-2 last season with a 3.77 ERA over eight starts before injuring his elbow.

              Giants youth movement

The children are the future, especially in San Francisco where the aging Giants are getting daily doses of youthful exuberance. Manager Bruce Bochy is playing his prospects more during September in order to get a look at next year’s possible team.

San Francisco is using guys like Rajai Davis and Dan Ortmeier more and sitting veterans like Dave Roberts and Barry Bonds. Bonds told reporters he isn’t concerned with his manager’s decisions and Bochy said his 43-year-old slugger hasn’t complained about the decrease in playing time.

“We'll be playing contending teams in our division, so he's going to play," Bochy told reporters of Bonds’ status. "But it's definitely been cut back. No question I'd like to get some kids out there, too, as much as I can."

              Shields can’t protect Angels’ leads

Scot Shields picked the wrong time of year to struggle, what with the postseason less than a month away. The Angels' best reliever, who handles the late innings before handing the ball over to closer Francisco Rodriguez, coughed up a grand slam to Hank Blalock in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 8-7 loss to Texas.

Shields’ troubles have carried over from August, when the right-handed reliever allowed 11 earned runs in 11 innings for an ERA of 9.00.

Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia is now rethinking Shields' use out of the bullpen.

"We could consider a role change, we could consider letting him work a little bit off the mound. There's a lot of things that I think we're going to look at as we move forward here," Scioscia told the Los Angeles Times.

              Say it ain’t so, Joe

Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer isn’t coming back anytime soon. The former American League batting champ could miss another week while he recovers from a strained left hamstring.

“He's not ready to go down there [on the field] and do any kind of running," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "He still has a ways to go."

Mauer has been limited to catch, pool exercise and hitting off a tee since suffering the injury on August 25. He's batting .294 this season with five home runs and since Minnesota’s postseason push is all but extinct, the team won’t rush him back in September.

The club is also contemplating moving Mauer to third base to avoid the wear and tear his legs suffer behind the plate. However, this change will likely wait until next season depending on the result of contract negotiations with outfielder Torii Hunter and ace Johan Santana.

                Baseball Today - September 4

                SCOREBOARD
                Tuesday, Sept. 4
Seattle at N.Y. Yankees (7:05 p.m. EDT). Chien-Ming Wang takes the mound for the first time since helping the Yankees complete a three-game sweep of Boston.

                STARS
                Monday

-- Mike Lowell, Red Sox, hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs to lead Boston over Toronto 13-10.

-- C.C. Sabathia, Indians, gave up six hits and one walk in eight innings to lead Cleveland past Minnesota 5-0.

-- Yuniesky Betancourt, Mariners, knocked in three runs in Seattle's 7-1 win over the New York Yankees.

-- Ian Snell, Pirates, allowed five hits in seven innings and Pittsburgh routed St. Louis 11-0.

-- Ervin Santana, Angels, pitched two-hit ball over 6 1-3 scoreless innings for his first win since June 9 to help the Los Angeles Angels beat Oakland 9-5.

                PEDRO RETURNS, REACHES MILESTONE

Pedro Martinez completed his comeback from major shoulder surgery on Monday and quickly went into the record books, becoming the 15th pitcher to strike out 3,000 batters in his career in the New York Mets' 10-4 win over Cincinnati. Martinez allowed three runs -- two earned -- and five hits, striking out four in five innings to earn the win.

                200 HITS

Ichiro Suzuki homered in the third inning of Seattle's 7-1 win over the New York Yankees on Monday to reach 200 hits for the seventh consecutive season, tying Wade Boggs' AL mark. The major league record for consecutive 200-hit seasons is eight by Willie Keeler (1894-01).

                TRICKY TRIBE

Johan Santana allowed four runs in six innings and took the loss in Minnesota's 5-0 defeat to Cleveland on Monday and has dropped all five of his starts against the Indians this season. The last time a Twins pitcher went 0-5 in one season against the same opponent was 1974, when Joe Decker lost five straight to the Oakland Athletics.

                STRUGGLING

Carlos Zambrano lost his fifth straight start, giving up eight runs for the first time since June 22, 2005, and the Chicago Cubs were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-3. He lasted 4 1-3 innings, his shortest outing since April 13. Zambrano has a 9.56 ERA in three starts since the Cubs gave him a $91.5 million, five-year contract extension, and he is 0-5 with an 8.29 ERA in six starts since July 29.

                RAYS RECORD

Carlos Pena hit his team-record 35th homer, a tiebreaking two-run drive that helped Tampa Bay rally past Baltimore 9-7 on Monday. Pena's total is one more than Jose Canseco (1999) and current Orioles designated hitter Aubrey Huff (2003) hit for the Devil Rays.

                STREAKING

Greg Maddux gave up two runs in 6 1-3 innings and extended his streak without a walk to 49 1-3 innings over seven starts as San Diego routed Arizona 10-2 on Monday. Maddux set the record with 72 1-3 innings without a free pass in 2001 -- a streak that ended with an intentional walk. ... Mike Lowell went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and two singles to extend his hitting streak to 16 games in Boston's 13-10 win over Toronto.

                SNAPPED

Seattle defeated the New York Yankees 7-1 on Monday to snap its season-worst, nine-game losing streak and trim the Yankees' wild-card lead to one game. It was the Mariners' first win since Aug. 24. ... Pittsburgh routed St. Louis 11-0 to snap a five-game skid.

                SPEAKING

"The only thing I got (on) my mind today was win. No matter how, no matter what, just win." -- Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, on outpitching Roger Clemens in the Mariners' 7-1 win over the wild card-leading New York Yankees. The matchup between the 45-year-old Clemens and 21-year-old Hernandez was the largest age difference between opposing starters since 46-year-old Charlie Hough started for Florida against 22-year-old Salomon Torres of the Giants on April 16, 1994.

                SEASONS
                Sept. 4

1916 -- Longtime pitching rivals Christy Mathewson and Mordecai Brown closed out their careers, by special arrangement, in the same game. Mathewson won the game 10-8.

1928 -- The Boston Braves started a grueling string in which they played nine straight doubleheaders, a major league record.

1941 -- The New York Yankees clinched the pennant on the earliest date in baseball history with a 6-3 victory over Boston.

1966 -- Los Angeles became the first team in major league history to draw more than 2 million at home and on the road as the Dodgers beat the Reds 8-6 in front of 18,670 fans in Cincinnati.

1974 -- Don Wilson of the Houston Astros was replaced by a pinch hitter after pitching eight no-hit innings against Cincinnati. Mike Cosgrove pitched the ninth inning and gave up a leadoff single to Tony Perez for the only hit as the Reds won the game 2-1.

1985 -- Gary Carter hit a pair of solo home runs to tie a major league record and singled in another run to lead the New York Mets to a 9-2 victory over San Diego. Carter's feat followed a three-homer performance the night before as he became the 11th player in major league history to hit five home runs in two games.

1993 -- Jim Abbott threw the New York Yankees' first no-hitter in 10 years, leading them to a 4-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

1995 -- Robin Ventura became the eighth player in major league history -- and the first in 25 years -- to hit two grand slams in one game as the Chicago White Sox beat Texas 14-3.

1998 -- The New York Yankees reached 100 wins on the earliest date in major league history -- five days before the 1906 Chicago Cubs and 1954 Cleveland Indians -- with an 11-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox. The '06 Cubs set the major league record for fewest games to reach 100 victories (132).

2002 -- The Oakland Athletics set an AL record by winning their 20th straight game. They blew an 11-run lead before pinch-hitter Scott Hatteberg homered in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Kansas City 12-11. Oakland broke a three-way tie for the longest winning streak in AL history with the 1906 Chicago White Sox and the 1947 New York Yankees.

2006 -- Florida became the first team in major league history to climb above/**/.500 after being 20 games under, rallying to beat reeling Arizona 8-5. With four consecutive victories, the Marlins (69-68) have a winning record for the first time. They were 11-31 on May 21.

Today's birthdays: Pat Neshek 27; Aaron Fultz 34; Mike Piazza 39.

                  Cleveland at Minnesota
The Indians are starting to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the Central pack thanks to a stretch that has seen them win nine of their last 10, including a 5-0 win yesterday over Johan Santana in the Metrodome. The Tribe got a strong performance out of C.C. Sabathia, who allowed only six hits over eight innings. They probably can't count on that kind of effort today out of rookie Aaron Laffey, who comes in with a 5.01 ERA. But neither will Cleveland likely be facing a Santana-like effort out of Kevin Slowey (5.84 ERA), who will be making his first start since being recalled from the minors. With the Twins mired in a 2-6 slump, Cleveland looks like a good pick (-127) according to Dunkel, which has the Indians favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (-127). Here are all of today's games.

                    Streaking Pitchers

                    Tuesday, September 4

                    HOT

Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels) – The hard throwing youngster is 2-1 in his last three starts with a 3.44 ERA. Weaver was solid in his last outing, striking out five and giving up one run in eight innings. He showed good command throwing 70 of his 100 pitches for strikes. The Angels are 4-0 in Weaver’s last four home starts and are –178 favorites at home tonight against the Oakland A’s (+170).

Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) – Wang has won his last three starts, posting a stifling 1.71 ERA and striking out 17. He has nine wins in his last 12 games and has given up only one home run in that two-month span. The right-hander held the BoSox hitless for six innings before surrendering his only hit of the game in the seventh last Thursday. He faces the Mariners (+222) tonight as a –240 favorite.

Oliver Perez (New York Mets) – Perez is 2-1 in his last three starts, striking out 19, with an ERA of 2.89. He struck out 10 in his last outing versus Philadelphia and posted 39 strikeouts in the month of August. The Mets are 4-1 in Perez’s last five road starts and hope to continue that trend tonight as –138 favorites against the Reds (+130).

                    COLD

Dontrelle Willis (Florida Marlins) – Consistency has been a rare commodity for the struggling ace this season. The D-Train has been serving up homers like Whoppers at Burger King. He is 0-2 in his last three starts with a 6.63 ERA. He has given up seven homers in that stretch and has just one win in his last 12 decisions. Willis was rocked in his last outing for eight hits, six runs, and three homers in 5 1/3 innings. Florida faces Washington (-120) tonight as +112 underdogs.

Jeremy Guthrie (Baltimore Orioles) – Guthrie hasn’t won in six straight starts and has surrendered 11 home runs in a winless August. Since the All-Star break he has given up seven multi-homer games. Guthrie posted a 7.50 ERA in his last outing getting roughed up at the hands of the Devil Rays. He seeks redemption tonight when he faces them again as a +140 underdog.

                      Hot Lines

                      Tuesday, September 4

Florida Marlins at Washington Nationals: (-119, 8 ½)

September may only be a few days old but it is already shaping up to be a good month for the Washington Nationals.

The Nats are undefeated in their three games in September thanks to solid pitching. Washington’s arms have combined for a 1.33 ERA over the last 27 innings of baseball while holding opponents to a .156 batting average.

Today’s starter, Shawn Hill, has performed well since returning to the big league club in August. The right-handed sinker baller has an ERA of 3.19 over his last four starts –which would be lower if not for a six-run hiccup versus the Dodgers last Wednesday.

                      Pick: Nationals -119

Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins: (+119, 9 ½)

A bump in offensive production the other night put an end to the Indians’ eight-game win streak, but picked up right from where they left off, opening a 10-game road trip with a win over Minny on Monday.

Cleveland has won 11 of its last 13 games, averaging 5 ½ runs per contest while holding opponents to three or fewer runs seven times during this stretch.

This hot streak has pushed the Tribe six games ahead of the Detroit Tigers and 10 ½ games ahead of the Twins in the American League Central.

                      Pick: Indians -127

San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies: (+103, 9 ½)

Since reeling off seven wins in their last 10 games the Rockies have turned the race in the National League West into what the WWE calls a Fatal Four-Way.

"I consider us in a race and my opinion is the only thing I value right now as far as that question goes," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle told the Denver Post. "Our team believes they are. Do we have to win a large volume in a short period? Sure we do."

Colorado added another victory on Monday, improving its record at Coors Field to 40-26 this season. The Rockies figure they must finish 16-9 during their final 25 games in order to make the postseason. They are currently five games out of the division lead and four games back of the wild card.

                      Pick: Rockies +103
