Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-6, 52)
        Sunday, September 2, 4 p.m. ET

They’re going retro in Regina as the Riders bring back their old green-and-white jerseys, likely to sell like cold beer on a hot day in the nation’s per capita CFL merchandise capital.

Saskatchewan’s also reintroducing Corey Holmes to the fold. Holmes, formerly a Most Outstanding Player finalist with the Riders as an all-purpose back, is assured of returning kicks this weekend. He’s very capable of celebrating his recent escape from Hamilton by going the distance this Sunday.

Winnipeg won’t introduce many new wrinkles to their offense - why bother? The triumvirate of Milt Stegall, Charles Roberts and Kevin Glenn have paced the East Division’s highest scoring offensive unit so far and they’ll once again be the key figures for the Riders to stop if they want to please the home fans. Stegall leads the CFL in receiving, Roberts in rushing and touchdowns and Glenn in QB Rating (among regulars).

I like Saskatchewan’s chances. While the throwback uniforms will make me recall the early-80s Riders (my first favorite CFL franchise, unfortunately not a frequent Grey Cup winner), the league’s top defense has impressed me so much I’ll back it no matter what color it wears.

        Pick: Roughriders -6

                Gameday
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Sunday MLB Gameday

A couple of old teammates are set to clash down in Atlanta as the calendar pages turn to the all-important month of September this weekend. Here is your MLB Gameday …

New York Mets at Atlanta Braves, 1:05pm ET
Tom Glavine (11-6, 4.15 ERA) vs. John Smoltz (12-6, 3.06 ERA)

Glavine was robbed of a win last time out after he tossed seven scoreless innings on the road against the Phillies. That outing came on the heels of an ugly effort for the lefthander on August 23 versus the Padres, in which he gave up six earned runs on 11 hits in five innings. Glavine is now 11-6 in 2007, and he'd like to get his ERA below 4.00.

Smoltz has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his past five starts, and he's 2-0 with three no-decisions in that time. The righthander held the Mets to two earned runs on eight hits over 6 1-3 innings back on August 8, and he's coming off a solid outing versus the Marlins on Tuesday night (six innings, three earned runs on six hits).

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres, 4:05pm ET
Chad Billingsley (9-4, 3.50 ERA) vs. Justin Germano (7-7, 4.25 ERA)

Billingsley has won two straight games for the Dodgers, and he's allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his past three outings. The righthander picked up a win against the Nationals at home last time out, holding the opposition to three earned runs on eight hits over seven innings, and striking out six batters. Billingsley's ERA is down to 3.50.

Germano finally got back into the win column for the Padres on Tuesday, as he held the Diamondbacks to three earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work. That outing marked the first time the righthander had picked up a victory since July 15, and he beat D-Backs ace Brandon Webb to boot. Germano is an even .500 at 7-7 so far this season.

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks, 4:40pm ET
Josh Fogg (7-9, 5.10 ERA) vs. Brandon Webb (14-9, 2.83 ERA)

Fogg is coming off a strong outing in San Francisco, but the righthander was saddled with a no-decision despite only allowing a single earned run on three hits over six innings of work (while striking out one). Fogg hasn't picked up a victory since beating the Cubs on August 11, and he's gone 0-2 with that no-decision in his past three starts.

Webb is coming off one of his worst starts of the season, as he surrendered six earned runs on seven hits over 5 1-3 innings versus the Padres on Tuesday night. That defeat ended Webb's six-game winning streak, and moved his record to 14-9 on the season. The righthander still has a great ERA of 2.83 in 2007, and he's struck out 170 batters.

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels, 8:05pm ET
Kason Gabbard (6-1, 3.79 ERA) vs. John Lackey (16-8, 3.18 ERA)

Gabbard is looking like a solid acquisition for the Rangers. The lefthander has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his six starts for Texas, and he's 2-1 with three no-decisions since coming over from Boston in the Eric Gagne trade. Against the White Sox on Tuesday, though, Gabbard went just 4 2-3 innings, allowing three earned runs.

Lackey snapped a two-game losing streak last time out by tossing a complete-game, seven-hit shutout against the division-rival Mariners. In his previous two outings, against the Red Sox and Yankees, the righthander had given up nine earned runs on 20 hits in just 11 innings of work. Lackey, though, is 8-1 against AL West opponents this season.

                  Seattle at Toronto
Seattle is falling further and further out of postseason contention as the Mariners dropped their eighth straight yesterday. Once again it was a lack of offense as the M's could manage only one run and six hits against the Blue Jays, and are now averaging just 3.1 runs and batting .261 during the skid. Those numbers don't look to improve much today against Toronto's A.J. Burnett, who is 2-1 with a 1.63 ERA and .149 opponents' batting average over his last four starts. The Blue Jays look like a good pick (-149) according to Dunkel, which has Toronto favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Toronto (-149). Here are all of today's games.

                      Hot Lines

                      Sunday, September 2

Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins (-118, 8 ½)

Francisco Liriano was in Minnesota this weekend for a checkup on his surgically repaired pitching elbow. Liriano – a key component of the Twins pitching staff last season – underwent Tommy John surgery last November.

He’s tossing from 140 feet and appears on pace to return by spring training. The Twins could really use the ace southpaw right now. Minnesota has dropped to middle of the pack in the AL Central because of inconsistent starting pitching.

If Liriano were available the Twins would be able to boot the bumbling Boof Bonser to the bullpen rather than sending him out to the mound every fifth day.

                      Pick: Royals +110

New York Mets at Atlanta Braves (-148, 8 ½)

The Mets starting rotation is in better shape after Michael Pelfrey's strong performance yesterday and with Pedro Martinez scheduled to make his season debut tomorrow. The question mark remains the relief staff.

Manager Willie Randolph is scrambling to find reliable arms out of the bullpen and his job hasn’t been any easier with closer Billy Wagner struggling. The once-dominating ninth-inning stopper has given up seven runs in his last four outings.

The Braves failed to gain ground during the weekend series against the NL East leaders. Atlanta needs its best month of baseball in September to avoid elimination from the postseason for a consecutive year.

“We’ve got 31 days left to finish this thing,” Braves skipper Bobby Cox told the Macon Telegraph before yesterday’s 6-4 loss. “We have to play each game like it’s a playoff game.”

                      Pick: Mets +140

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres (-109, 8 ½)

The Dodgers front office reshaped the club's starting rotation on the fly with the acquisitions of David Wells and Esteban Loaiza. Wells will miss his next start while serving a seven-game suspension he earned while a member of the Padres earlier this season.

The batting order is still missing Nomar Garciaparra. The infielder hasn’t played since August 13th because of a sore calf.

“We’re waiting for him to feel comfortable and not to worry too much that he can play,” team trainer Stan Conte told the Los Angeles Times.

August was a great month at the plate for the normally light-hitting Padres. The ball club hit .276 last month and averaged an astounding 5.4 runs per game.

                      Pick: Padres –109

                        Streaking Pitchers

                        Sunday, September 2

                        HOT

Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees) - The left-hander continues to be money during the second half of the season. He won each of his six outings in August and the Yankees are 9-1 in his 10 starts since the All-Star break. Pettitte will carry his impressive 105-42 career post-All-Star break record into today's game against Tampa Bay Devil Rays as a -315 favorite. The D-Rays counter with Jason Hammel. Tampa Bay is 1-4 in the righty's last five outings.

Jake Westbrook (Cleveland Indians) - The right-hander's allowed just four total runs in his last three appearances and the Tribe have come out on top each time as the fave. Westbrook made six starts in August and Cleveland won the five games in which he was favored. He allowed one run or less four times during the month and under bettors have cashed in after nine of his 10 starts since the break. The Indians finish up their series with the Chicago White Sox as -201 favorites.

Brian Bannister (Kansas City Royals) - Former World Series MVP Bret Saberhagen and David Cone are the only Royals pitchers to win the Cy Young Award for the once-proud franchise. Bannister won't join them on that exclusive list this year, but the ex-USC Trojan is sure making backers money. He's the 16th-best money starter in baseball and Kansas City is 7-1 the last eight times he has taken the hill. That stretch which includes a 5-0 mark as the underdog. The Royals are listed as +110 road dogs in Minnesota and might be a worthwhile bet considering the Royals won both of his two starts against the Twins last month.

                        COLD

Jeff Suppan (Milwaukee Brewers) - The veteran hasn't recorded a victory since June 22, when the Brewers had an 8 ½-game lead in the NL Central. The Brew Crew are no longer leading the division and Suppan's taste for victory has gone skunky. The Brewers are 0-3 in his last three outings and Milwaukee has just five wins in his last 12 appearances. The Brewers will look to sweep the Pirates today as -117 home favorites.

Josh Fogg (Colorado Rockies) - The righty has allowed 15 runs in just under 16 innings of work over his last three outings and the Rockies have been on the losing side each time. Fogg is winless in his last four road outings and Colorado is 1-6 the last seven times he has started away from Coors Field. He enters his start against Arizona as a +202 underdog.
