    Six-pack for Saturday

-- Colorado outhit Diamondbacks 17-3, but needed a run in ninth inning to force extra frames, where they outlasted a fading Arizona team, 7-3. Rockies are a spunky bunch.

-- Rookie Yovani Gallardo hit his first big league home run, as he also pitched Brewers over the Pirates 3-2 in front of 35,689 at Miller Park.

-- Minnesota's Scott Baker lost his perfect game, no-hitter in 9th inning, but still got compete game win, 5-1 vs Royals.

-- Jack Cassel, starting pitcher for Padres Friday night, is a brother of Patriots' backup QB Matt Cassel.

-- Pitcher-turned-outfielder Rick Ankiel is hitting .328 for the suddenly resurgent Cardinals.

-- Washington, picked to finish near bottom of the Pac-10, pounded Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. Wonder if nitwits in Syracuse would like to have Coach Pasqualoni back now?

Saturday's List of 13: Random info as football season starts

      13) You think JD Drew is overpaid? The NY Post reports that Britney Spears earns $728,686 a month. For doing what?

      12) More proof that NFL preseason games are waste of time; the two QB’s in second half of Rams-Chiefs game Thursday went to Princeton and Harvard.

      11) By the way, of the Rams’ 22 starters, zero took the field Thursday night. Even the kicker got the night off.

      10) NFL players come from everywhere: Dallas has four QB’s on its summer roster; they went to college at Florida State, Oregon State, Eastern Illinois and Tarleton State, with Tony Romo being the EIU alum.

      9) Watching LSU-Miss State Thursday night, it was hard to believe those two teams belong to the same conference……

8)……..and it underlines how much harder it is to revive a football program than it is in basketball; you need so much more of everything. In basketball, you bring in six decent guys in two years, and you’ll be competitive; two exceptional years, and you’re probably a contender. Almost all freshman football players redshirt, so it takes until the fourth year for your first recruits to become upperclassmen.

      7) Strange stat; in their last 41 home games, Tennessee Vols are 13-28 against the spread.

      6) Week 1 NFL matchups shouldn’t be great rivalry games; Dallas-Giants, Ravens-Bengals, Jets-Pats are too important to be played the first week. People are so excited about the NFL starting, they could get away with lesser matchups in Week 1, or at least get away without scheduling big division games that will be ratings grabbers whenever they’re played.

      5) Everything is sponsored on Met radio broadcasts, even an announcement of the gametime temperature. Seriously.

      4) If Eldrick Woods doesn’t play in all four Fed Ex Cup events next year, how long you think Fed Ex will pony up $10M/ year to whomever wins the playoffs? Bottom line, Mr. Woods will make or break this idea, as he does with most everything in modern golf.

      3) Major league coaches have been warned and fined for not wearing game jerseys under those pullovers you see them wearing in dugout. One official approached Terry Francona during a game in Bronx this week; Francona had his jersey on, but he wasn’t happy about being asked during a game.

      2) Can we bring Ted Koppel out of retirement to do a nightly update on Rocco Baldelli's hamstring? America held hostage; it has been 109 days since Rocco Baldelli last appeared in a major league game; broken bones heal faster than Baldelli’s tweaked hamstring. It'll probably heal on September 30.

      1) It was estimated this week that 13.6 million people play in a fantasy football league. Good luck with your seasons.

        Saturday’s MLS Preview and Picks

Chicago Fire at New York Red Bulls (+280, draw +225, -125)

Glued to the bottom off the table at the halfway point of the season, the Chicago Fire decided to take a gamble. They appointed a new coach and gave him a free reign to sign big-name players, all in the hopes of making a late push for the playoffs. So far the plan has worked.

The addition of Paolo Wanchope and Cuauhtémoc Blanco has given the team an attacking edge that was sorely lacking earlier in the season. The Fire have now scored nine goals in the past five games, winning three of those.

New coach Juan Carlos Osorio revolutionized the team almost overnight. They play quick attacking football that is difficult for opponents to deal with.

Osorio has also worked wonders with Chicago’s once-leaky defense – the Fire had conceded eight goals in four games before the All-Star game, but have let in just three in five games since.

Playing the Red Bulls at Giants Stadium is never an easy proposition, but New York has lost its last two games. It's a good time to face them. Chicago still has a lot of work to do this season, but its new-look side can take a draw from Meadowlands.

        Pick: Draw +225

DC United at FC Dallas (+210, draw +210, +110)

It went under the radar with all the Beckham hoopla, but this week FC Dallas made one of the biggest signings in the history of MLS. Brazilian World Cup winner Denilson joined the club and, depending on work permit issues, could play this weekend.

The quick and exceptionally skillful attacker is only the fourth World Cup winning player to join MLS, and at 30 years old still has several good years left in him. Denilson will give Dallas an extra edge going forward; he is the kind of player who can change any game with one moment of magic.

The fascinating thing about the move is that Dallas was already one of the best teams in the league and a certain contender for the MLS Cup. Dallas has won two of its last three games and is two points off league-leading Houston with two games in hand.

This weekend they welcome a surging DC United side to Pizza Hut Park for the game of the weekend. United are on a three-game winning streak, while Dallas is unbeaten at home since April. It’s impossible to see one team dominating the other.

        Pick: Draw +210

Kansas City Wizards at Houston Dynamo (+280, draw +225, -125)

A loss to Real Salt Lake on Wednesday did more than just put the Wizards playoff place in jeopardy. It will also have severely dented their confidence. RSL had won just twice all season before the clash and hammered Kansas, a +120 favorite, 3-0 on the night.

The loss sums up what has been a terrible month for the Wizards. They've lost four of their five games in August – two defeats to New England and one apiece to Chicago and RSL.

The Wizards' biggest concern has to be their lack of offense. They have scored just three times in the last five games and their reliance on Eddie Johnson to provide most of the offense has backfired. He's scored twice in the past six games – not a bad record, but not good enough to keep Kansas on track.

For their part, the Houston Dynamo have been going through a bit of a wobbly patch as well. Houston's lost two of its last four matches (both losses were on the road), but they boast a 7-2-3 record at home this season and should dominate the Wizards.

        Pick: Houston -125

Real Salt Lake at L.A. Galaxy (+333, draw +240, -110)

Salt Lake pulled out a shock win over Kansas on Wednesday as a +210 favorite, and are now gunning for Los Angeles. On paper, the Galaxy are by far the better team and boast the likes of Beckham and Donovan, but the league table tells a different story.

RSL’s recent win lifted them off the bottom of the standings for the first time all season and left an embarrassed Galaxy sitting in last place in the West in what was expected to be a successful season.

To make matters worse, star player David Beckham suffered a knee injury in the SuperLiga final (a 4-3 loss on penalties) and could miss up to six weeks of action. That would essentially rule him out for the season, with the Galaxy unlikely to play into the postseason.

With all the negatives hanging over L.A. this week, it’s hard to see them winning. RSL have improved their squad with the addition of Argentinean trio Matias Mantilla, Fabian Espindola and Javier Morales, and are good for a draw against the downtrodden Galaxy

        Pick: Draw +240

                Saturday's college football information
                Top 10 Games of Week

Ole Miss starting less-mobile, more dependable Adams at QB in place of Tennessee transfer Schaeffer; Rebels beat Memphis the last two years (10-6/28-25), but Ole Miss covered just six of last 15 on road, lost nine of last 10 SU on road. Tigers covered four of last 12 as dog; they have senior QB and four starters back on OL. Ole Miss is 2-6 vs spread as road favorite since 2001.

Wisconsin is 11-5-1 vs spread in last 17 tries as home fave; they covered six of last seven non-league games, last four openers. Washington State has senior QB with 28 starts; they are 6-4 vs spread in last ten road games, but are 3-5 as road dog last three seasons. Badgers have four starters back on OL, but also have new QB, who has started only two games in his college career.

Georgia Tech won last three road openers, all vs ranked teams; they lost 14-10 to Notre Dame LY (+6.5); they were outgained in that game, 384-259. Irish are 6-13 in last 19 tries as home favorite, 4-8 under Weis. Tech is 9-5 vs spread on road last three years; they have new QB, which will be improvement, because Ball was horrible. Irish have only nine starters back (4 offense, 5 defense)

Missouro-Illinois is annual hoop game in St Louis; now they are doing it in football too; good idea. Mizzou won last five openers is 10-6 vs spread in last 16 games away from home. Illini is 8-28 SU last three years, 4-7 vs spread in last 11 non-league games. Both sides have three seniors starting on OL; biggest variable is how much did Illini's Williams improve as a passer?

Home side won eight of last nine UCLA-Stanford games; Bruins won last visit here 30-27 (OT) in '05. First game for Harbaugh as Cardinal coach; they have senior QB who started seven games when Edwards was hurt LY. UCLA is 3-6 vs spread as a favorite on road under Dorrell; they had seven sacks in 31-0 home win vs Cardinal LY, but have junior QB with only five starts.

Wake Forest is 17-7 as road dog under Grobe, 26-12 as dog at all sites; they won three of last four games vs Boston College, with all four decided by seven or less points. Deacons are 11-6 vs the spread in last 17 ACC games. BC was 42-57/402 passing in last year's 21-14 loss to Wake. Eagles have senior QB with 18 starts, but have new coach- they're 5-2-1 in last eight as a home fave.

Great chance for explosive Oklahoma State to play on national stage at Georgia, where Dawgs are just 5-10-1 in last sixteen as a home favorite, and have SEC rival South Carolina on deck. OSU covered eight of last 11 non-league games, but they've been bad on road (just 7-19 as road dog, 2-6 with Gundy). OSU QB Reid is vet with 19 starts. Georgia has soph QB with eight starts.

Underdog covered four of last five Colorado-Colorado St games with last five all decided by seven or less pts, and four decided by five or less. Both sides are struggling; Buffs covered six of last 17 non-league games- they had only 146 total yards last yr, in 14-10 loss. Colorado's new QB is coach Hawkins' son, redshirt freshman. State has a senior QB with 17 career starts.

Kansas State covered two of last seven as road dog, and three of last 11 non-league games; they have soph QB with five starts under his belt, vs Auburn defense with seven starters back, so they'll be tough. Tigers have senior QB, but new punter, kicker, long snapper, and four new starters on OL. K-State got good by scheduling weak teams early; this game is cash grab by them.

Tennessee waxed Cal LY, 35-18, in game that was 35-3 after 3rd quarter; Vols outgained Bears 514-336, and had four TD plays of 40+ yards. Cal covered just two of last seven non-league games. Both sides have vet QB and three starters back on OL, but three of Vols' OL starters are sophs, still young. Tennessee is 8-3 vs spread in last 11 tries as dog; since '04, they're 6-4 as road dog.

                Rest of the Card

Emotional day for Virginia Tech team that won last three home openers by combined score of 146-0; they play LSU next; Tech covered 15 of last 23 tries as home favorite.

Miami covered just nine of last 28 as home favorite; they open last season in Orange Bowl hosting Marshall squad that lost its three games vs bigtime opponents LY, 42-10/23-7/33-7.

Michigan State covered eight of last 27 as home favorite; they won last eight home openers by 18-point average. UAB has new coach, new QB; new head coaches on both sidelines here.

UConn covered four of last 14 road games. Duke lost twenty in row SU, has covered only six of last 21 at home, but they have whole OL back and vet QB, while UConn has a new QB.

Virginia beat Wyoming 13-12 in OT LY (-9) on missed PAT; UVa lost nine of last ten road games, covered one of last seven out of ACC. Wyoming outgained Cavs 313-206 LY; they're 18-11 vs spread in their last 29 home games.

Arizona State transfer Keller makes Nebraska debut at QB; they are 15-10 vs spread in last 25 tries as home favorite. Nevada has covered just two of last 10 as road dog, but they were 5-1 vs the spread away from home last season.

Iowa failed to cover last six tries as favorite away from home; in '06, they were 1-6 as favorite, beating Northern Illinois 24-14 as a 16-pt favorite. New QB this year for Hawkeyes, who outgained Huskies 405-196 in last year's meeting.

Houston breaks in new QB, replacing Kolb, who had played in Briles' system for seven years (HS/college). Oregon won 38-24 at Houston in '05; they've covered seven of last nine as favorite at home. Lookahead alert: Ducks play Michigan next week.

Arizona beat BYU last season 16-13 on 48-yd FG with 0:06 left; 'cats are 7-3 vs spread in last ten road games, but lost last five road openers- they have 17 starters back and explosive vet QB in Tuitama, with 13 career starts. BYU has new QB.

Army actually shut Zips out 20-0 in Akron in '05, but since, the Cadets fell apart, to point that former Arenaball coach Brock is their new coach. Zips lost their QB and four starters on OL, and are 7-12 vs spread in last nineteen tries as home favorite.

Central Florida is 7-12 vs spread in last nineteen tries as dog on road; they have four starters back on OL, but new QB. NC State has new coach; they're 3-13 vs spread in last 16 as home fave, and have ACC game at Boston College up next.

Underdog Baylor led TCU 7-0 at halftime LY, but Horned Frogs were 11-13/148 passing in second half, and won 17-7. Frogs are 6-2 vs spread in last eight as home favorite, but they have date at Texas next week, so could be looking ahead.

Kansas is 7-4 vs spread in last 11 tries as home favorite, but the QB is a soph, and they lost three starters off OL. Central Mich lost their coach to Cincinnati, but they have a prolific soph QB, and new coach who was WR coach at West Virginia.

Pittsburgh is 6-3 as home favorite under Wannstedt, but they'll have freshman at QB, so hard to lay 20 with them. E. Michigan is 10-7 vs spread as road underdog under Genyk, but are 5-14 in non-league games since 2000.

Purdue is 2-0-1 vs spread in last three tries as road favorite, but is 8-13-1 overall as favorite since 2004; they have junior QB with 19 career starts. Both sides have three starters back on the OL.

Minnesota is switching from running team to spread offense, so new coach, new QB for team that covered 10 of last 13 as home favorite under Mason. Bowling Green is 10-12 last two seasons, after Brandon had great success taking over for Urban Meyer.

Home side won last two New Mexico-UTEP games, with Lobos losing last visit here, 21-13 (+2.5). Miners covered just four of 11 at home last two years. Lobos covered 16 of last 21 on the road; they have 18 starters back (8 offense, 10 defense).

Arizona State is 21-15 as home favorite since '00; they have QB with 18 career starts, as Erickson makes his debut at ASU, third Pac-10 team he's coached. San Jose had resurgence LY, playing in a bowl; their QB is senior, with 26 career starts.

USC is 45-point favorite over Idaho; Trojans' DL coach is former head coach of Vandals. USC covered 11 of last 15 in non-league games. Idaho has new QB, and third head coach in three years.

Penn State has Notre Dame coming to town next week, so they'll be under wraps here, vs Florida International squad that has a new coach, new QB, but OL with five starters back. Penn State is 6-3-1 as home favorite the last two years.

Texas is 24-16 as home favorite since '00; they've covered five of last six non-league games. Both teams lost three starters on OL and have soph QB. Longhorns won last seven openers by 52-5 average score.

Oklahoma plays Miami next week, so could be underwraps vs a North Texas team coached by former Texas QB Dodge, who was a great high school coach before taking this job. Both teams are breaking in new QBs; Sooners have five juniors starting on OL.

South Carolina QB Mitchell is out for this game (academics) and one of their CBs is suspended for legal reasons, so with Georgia on deck, Gamecocks have issues to deal with; they're 7-2 as fave under Spurrier, 4-2 at home.

Arkansas has great RBs, shaky QBs, and coach under scrutiny after last year's lousy finish. Troy State played at Florida State, Georgia Tech and Nebraska in consecutive weeks last year and covered two of the three; they're 7-5 as road dog since 2004.

Middle Tennessee beat Florida Atlantic by 35-14 score in each of last two years; MTSU is 5-3 as road dog last two years. FAU is 0-4 as home favorite in program history; they have 8 starters back on offense, 10 on defense, after rebuilding 5-7 mark in '06.

East Carolina at #9 Virginia Tech (ESPN | 12:00 PM ET)

Since accepting membership in Conference USA, the Pirates have produced a 16-28 (.364) non-conference record, which includes a program-high 5-1 mark in 1999. East Carolina has compiled an all-time record of 26-57-1 against current members of the Atlanta Coast Conference. EDGE: VA TECH
In their last 20 games against Top 25 teams, the Pirates have fashioned a 4-16 slate. ECU’s last win over a ranked opponent occurred on Nov. 23, 2002 when the Pirates handled No. 22 TCU 31-28 at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. EDGE: VA TECH
Emotions will certainly be high on opening night, with this being the first major sporting even on the Virginia Tech campus since the April 16 tragedy. The Hokies have won the last five in the series, including a 45-28 win the last time the two played – coming in 2000 at Greenville. Virginia Tech has also won its first home game of the season in 18 of Frank Beamer’s last 20 seasons as a head coach. EDGE: VA TECH
Virginia Tech has an impressive 40-7-1 record versus non-conference teams at Lance Stadium since 1991, winning 25 straight non-league home games. EDGE: VA TECH

Washington State at #7 Wisconsin (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)

Washington State will be looking for their first season-opening win against a Top 10 team Saturday when they travel to Wisconsin. The Cougars are 0-5 all-time when opening against top 10 opponents, though they are 68-38-5 overall in season-opening contests. SLIGHT EDGE: WISCONSIN
The Cougars are 17-30 in games played in the Central Time Zone. Washington State has won six of their last eight trips to the Central Time Zone dating back to a season-opening triumph at Illinois in 1988. SLIGHT EDGE: WASH ST
Wisconsin is one of five programs in the nation with no more than one home loss since the start of the 2004 season. The Badgers are 18-1 at Camp Randall Stadium during that time. They have also won seven straight season-openers that were played at Camp Randall Stadium. EDGE: WISCONSIN
Saturday will be the first time Wisconsin has opened a season against a Pac-10 opponent since a 27-10 loss at No. 2-ranked Washington on Sept. 12, 1992. The Badgers have opened its season against a Pac-10 foe on four previous occasions and lost all four encounters. EDGE: WASH ST

#14 UCLA at Stanford (3:30 PM ET)

The last two times the Bruins have opened up with a conference opponent, they have gone on to tie for the Pac-10 championship. In 1997, the Bruins tied for first in the Pac-10 standing with Washington State and went on to play in the Cotton Bowl. In 1993, the Bruins tied for first in the Pac-10 with Arizona and USC and went on to play in the Rose Bowl. EDGE: UCLA
UCLA is led by a defense that returns 10 starters and allowed just 91.1 yards per game on the ground last season. The Bruins also allowed just 27 touchdowns in 13 games during the 2006 season – seven in the first five games. EDGE: UCLA
Stanford begins the season with a Pac-10 game for the second straight year, but it’s the first Pac-10 opener at home since 1991. Overall, the Cardinal is 6-4 in its last 10 openers, including wins in its last three home openers. EDGE: STANFORD
Since 1977, Stanford is 8-7 versus the Bruins at Stanford Stadium. In those 15 games, there have been seven games decided by a touchdown or less and five decided by a field goal or less. EDGE: STANFORD

Oklahoma State at #13 Georgia (ESPN2 | 6:45 PM ET)

Oklahoma State is 19-35-1 all-time against members of the SEC conference, but those numbers are deceiving. The Cowboys played neighboring Arkansas 42 times before the Razorbacks joined the SEC and none since Arkansas left the Southwest Conference. They haven’t visited an SEC venue since trekking to Mississippi State in 1999. SLIGHT EDGE: OKLA ST
Under head coach Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State is 6-1 in September games, including 2-1 in none-conference road games. The Cowboys are 2-6 when facing a member of the Top 25 in their first game of a season, but 2-1 in those games since 1984. SLIGHT EDGE: OKLA ST
Under the direction of head coach Mark Richt, Georgia owns a 25-2 record against teams from outside the Southeastern Conference. At home, the Bulldogs own a record of 17-0 against non-conference foes. EDGE: GEORGIA
Georgia is 62-15-1 in home openers and has won 10 consecutive home openers. Richt is 6-0 in season openers and 6-0 in home openers. EDGE: GEORGIA

Kansas State at #18 Auburn (7:45 PM ET)

Kansas State will put its 17-game winning streak in season openers on the line when the Wildcats travel to 14th-ranked Auburn Saturday for the 2007 season opener. The winning streak is currently the longest string of season-opening wins in school history. BIG EDGE: KANSAS STATE
The Wildcats enter tonight’s game with a 6-14 all-time record against the SEC. The last SEC opponent for the Wildcats was the 2001 Cotton Bowl against Tennessee, a 35-21 Wildcat win. EDGE: AUBURN
Auburn has an 87-25-2 record in season-opening games. The Tigers have won 16 of its last 21 season openers and a 5-3 mark under head coach Tommy Tuberville. Auburn’s 87 season-opening victories is just one win behind Alabama for the most among the 12 Southeastern Conference schools. EDGE: AUBURN
The Tigers are 11-1 in home night games since the 2000 season, including victories over four nationally-ranked teams. They are 28-5 in the month of September under Tuberville. EDGE: AUBURN

#15 Tennessee at #12 California (ABC | 8 PM ET)

Tennessee head coach Philip Fulmer is 14-1 all-time in season openers, with the lone loss coming at the hands of Pac-10 opponent UCLA in 1994 – the Bruins posted a 25-23 victory in Pasadena. SLIGHT EDGE: TENNESSEE
The Volunteers’ defense has allowed just six opposing ball carriers to rush for 100 yards in the last 37 games. During that span, the opponents’ top rusher has averaged 77.2 yards per game. EDGE: TENNESSEE
California junior quarterback Nate Longshore stepped into the starting role at quarterback in 2006 and established himself as one of the top signal-callers in the Pac-10, if not the nation. As a sophomore, Longshore connected for 24 touchdowns while directing the Bears’ offense to a Pac-10 best 32.8 points per game. EDGE: CAL
Senior running back Justin Forsett is slotted to be the starter for Cal, with the departure of Marshawn Lynch to the NFL. He’s more than capable with over 1,600 yards, six 100-yard games and an average of 6.4 yards per carry in his career. EDGE: CAL

                      College Football Gameday

The first weekend of the college football season kicks off on Saturday with a number of ranked teams making their debut. There’s only one contest between two ranked teams on the slate, while No. 1 USC and No. 3 West Virginia will both get their seasons of high expectations started.

                      Tennessee (15) at California (12)

The only ranked matchup of the week sees the Volunteers face the Golden Bears in their season opener for the second year in a row. Last year the Vols blasted the Bears 35-18 as a 3-point home underdog. The Volunteers head into the rematch with starting quarterback Erik Ainge not at 100 percent. Ainge broke the pinkie finger in his throwing hand while taking a snap in practice earlier in the week, and it’s not yet known whether it will hinder his throwing ability in Saturday’s game. If Ainge is ineffective, Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer has already said he will hand the reins over to sophomore Jonathan Crompton. The Golden Bears had BCS aspirations heading into last season before the Vols sent them crashing back down to earth in their opener. Quarterback Nate Longshore has one of the best wide receivers in the nation to throw to in DeSean Jackson and could be a tandem to watch this year. The Golden Bears are 6-point favorites at home in this game.

                      Idaho at USC (1)

The Trojans open their season with a laugher versus Idaho in which they are favored by a whopping 47 points. That means USC may have to score seven touchdowns to even have a chance to cover the spread. USC quarterback John David Booty begins his Heisman campaign, while starting running back Chauncey Washington is out with a shoulder injury. Look for the powerhouse USC defense to feast on Idaho, which will likely be starting a freshman at QB and RB.

Western Michigan at West Virginia (3)

This game looks like an easy win for the Mountaineers and the oddsmakers agree after spotting West Virginia 23.5 points. The Broncos aren’t pushovers though, and are a popular choice to win the MAC this season. If West Virginia wants to prove they really belong in BCS talk, they need to come out with a resounding win in their opener. Expect both RB Steve Slaton and QB Pat White to run wild after the duo combined for 34 rushing touchdowns last season. Western Michigan could have some growing pains to go through at the quarterback position. With Ryan Cubit gone, 2005 MAC Freshman of the year Tim Hiller takes over but Hiller missed all of last season with a knee injury.

East Carolina at Virginia Tech (9)

There’s just no way that the Hokies can lose this game. Virginia Tech will be playing for more than just a win, with this game and the entire season dedicated to the victims of last year’s shooting at the school. Virginia Tech will likely go as far as their incredible defense will take them. Their big D was the best in all of college football last season and if they get some help from their offense, the Hokies will be fearsome this season. If QB Sean Glennon can find some consistency, the Hokies should be able to put more points on the board this year. The Pirates will start the season without quarterback Rob Klass, after the sophomore was suspended following a DWI charge last week. Brett Clay will likely get the start, but he’s never even thrown a pass at the college level.

New York Mets at Atlanta Braves (FOX | 3:55 PM ET)

New York starter Mike Pelfrey is 0-3 with a 4.96 ERA in three road starts this season. He hasn’t pitched on the road since July 6, picking up a 4-0 loss to the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. EDGE: BRAVES
Pelfrey made his only career start against the Braves on April 20, allowing four runs and six hits in five innings of work – with Atlanta picking up a 7-3 victory. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES
Atlanta’s Chuck James returns to the rotation after spending two weeks on the disabled list to rest a dead arm. The Braves took the precaution because the left-hander has shown a tendency in his career to break down at this point in the season. SLIGHT EDGE: METS
James has posted a 1-3 record and 6.33 ERA in six career outings versus New York. He’s gone 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA in two starts against the Mets in 2007, allowing eight earned runs and 17 hits in 10 innings of work. EDGE: METS

Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics (FOX | 3:55 PM ET)

Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander is an even 2-2 with a 2.87 ERA in five career starts versus the Athletics. He was handed a 7-3 defeat on July 31 at Oakland, allowing three earned runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: A’S
Verlander has enjoyed great success on the road in 2007, posting a 7-2 record and 3.26 ERA in 12 starts. The right-hander has made only one start away from Comerica Park this month, picking up a 8-5 victory over the New York Yankees. EDGE: TIGERS
Oakland’s Dan Haren is an ultra-impressive 8-1 with a 2.56 ERA in 14 home starts this season. The All-Star pitcher has allowed just seven home runs in 95 innings at his home ball park. BIG EDGE: A’S
Haren has struggled to a 1-3 record and 4.68 ERA in five career starts versus the Tigers. He actually tallied his lone victory against them on July 31 at home, going six innings and allowing just two earned runs on six hits. SLIGHT EDGE: TIGERS

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians (7:05 PM ET)

White Sox starter Javier Vazquez is 4-2 with a 4.05 ERA in nine career starts versus Cleveland. The hard-throwing right-hander has allowed just two home runs in 53 1/3 innings against them. EDGE: WHITE SOX
Vazquez has been a solid option on the road this season, going 5-2 with a 4.15 ERA in 13 starts. The White Sox have split his last four starts away from U.S. Cellular Field, as Vazquez has allowed 13 earned runs in 25 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: WHITE SOX
Cleveland right-hander Paul Byrd is a solid 6-2 with a 4.72 ERA in 11 career starts versus Chicago. He’s posted a 1-0 record and 3.00 ERA in two outings against them in 2007, allowing four runs and 11 hits over 12 innings. EDGE: INDIANS
Byrd has an impressive 7-3 record at home, but carries in a highly-inflated 6.05 ERA. The right-hander has allowed an amazing 109 hits in just 74 1/3 innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: INDIANS

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres (10:05 PM ET)

San Diego ace Jake Peavy is a fantastic 7-1 with a 2.44 ERA in 16 career starts versus Los Angeles. He’s fanned an amazing 101 batters and walked just 27 in 103 1/3 innings against them. BIG EDGE: PADRES
Peavy is 7-5 with a 2.86 ERA in 16 home starts this season. The Padres have lost four of his last six starts at Petco Park, with the offense managing to score just 17 runs over that span. SLIGHT EDGE: PADRES

                            Saturday’s MLB betting notes

                            Rays of hope

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays' improved performances over the past few weeks have given them some hope for next year.

The Rays have won six of their last eight games, scoring 61 runs in the process. On Thursday they completed a three-game sweep of their AL East rivals, the Baltimore Orioles.

"I just see an overall change in attitude," manager Joe Maddon told MLB.com. "We're getting to the point now where we believe we can win every night.

"The starting pitching has gotten better, the bullpen has gotten better, our defense has gotten better. We're starting to get that vibe. We're starting to believe we can win these things late; we can beat these people," he added.

The competition gets a whole lot stiffer for the Rays this weekend as they travel to the Bronx to take on the surging Yankees. Edwin Jackson (4-12, 5.51) will face Yanks call-up Ian Kennedy (0-0, 0.00) on Saturday and New York is a –220 favorite with the total set at 11.

Royals, Twins play three times in 24 hours

The Kansas City Royals and the Minnesota Twins will play three games inside a 24-hour period during this weekend’s four-game series. On Friday, they played a doubleheader and are scheduled to come right back to the park for a 12:10 p.m. Saturday game.

The tight schedule is because the teams have to make up for a game canceled earlier this month due to the bridge collapse in Minneapolis.

"It's going to be interesting. I didn't know we had a one o'clock game until I was checking the itinerary," Royals shortstop Tony Pena told MLB.com ahead of the series.

"It's got to be done. It's an unfortunate situation that happened there," first baseman Ross Gload added. "We'll just get it done."

One advantage of this weekend’s scheduling is that Saturday’s game falls on September 1 – the day MLB teams can expand their rosters. This will enable both teams to add to their bullpens before the final two games of the series.

Saturday features the pitching matchup of the Royals' Brandon Duckworth (2-3, 2.94) and the Twins' Carlos Silva (10-13, 4.33). Minnesota is a –157 favorite with the total set at 9.

                            Starters the key for Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are the only team with a winning record in the NL Central – the division they now lead by 2 ½ games. Much of the credit must go to their impressive starting pitchers.

The Cubs starters are 52-40 for the season – the best record in the NL and the fourth best in all of baseball. They also boast the second-best ERA in the NL at 4.00.

"The thing you always need is pitching, pitching, pitching," Cubs second baseman Mark DeRosa told MLB.com. "Bottom line, when it comes down to nitty-gritty time, it always comes down to who pitches the best game. I have all the confidence in the world in our bullpen and starting staff."

The ability to keep the rotation healthy is another factor in Chicago’s success. Last season they used 12 different starters; this year they have used just seven so far.

One of the most influential of the seven, Jason Marquis (10-8, 4.26), will take the mound on Saturday as the Cubs continue a three-game series against the Astros. Houston counters with Troy Patton (0-1, 4.76) and is a +161 underdog.

                            Anderson gets hot

The first half of Garret Anderson’s season was hampered by injury, but the Angels center fielder has quietly started to produce since the All-Star break. He is fourth in the majors with 39 RBIs in the second half and has scored 54 runs in 82 games overall this season.

"Garret was telling me he finally feels good," Chone Figgins told MLB.com when asked about his friend and teammate. "It's been a long road for him. It's really good to see him playing the way he can now."

Since a 10-RBI performance against the Yankees last week, Anderson has gone a tear. He has whacked four homers and 14 RBIs in seven outings to lift his slugging percentage from .415 to .462.

"He's feeling much more comfortable in the box," Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the team's website. "He's found a swing he can use and is driving the ball to all fields."

Anderson will get the chance to continue his hot-hitting streak when the Angels face the Texas Rangers in the second of a three-game series on Saturday. Edinson Volquez (0-0, 0.00) and Kelvim Escobar (15-6, 2.77) are the starters and Los Angeles is a –255 favorite with the total set at 9.
