    Bengals kicker hobbled
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shayne Graham left Cincinnati’s 24-19 loss to Atlanta last week with a right hip pointer, forcing the club into a pair of failed 2-point conversions. With Graham sidelined, the Bengals had punter Kyle Larson practicing kickoffs, extra points and field goals ahead of Friday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, but then signed Aaron Elling after he was waived by Jacksonville. Elling will fill in against Indy and beyond if he's needed, though Graham's injury doesn’t appear to be all that serious.

"Had this been a regular-season game," coach Marvin Lewis said, "(Graham) probably would have been able to come back and do something. Had this been a regular-season game (and Graham couldn't kick), we would've had Kyle kick the extra points."

        Friday’s MLB betting notes

        Manny blow for Sox

The Boston Red Sox could be without slugger Manny Ramirez for a week after he suffered a strained oblique in this week’s series with the New York Yankees.

"It's part of your thunder," said designated hitter David Ortiz. "When your cleanup hitter goes down like that, it hurts you. It doesn't matter how much of a lead you have. It's hard to replace a cleanup hitter."

Ramirez is batting .292 with 20 homers and 86 RBIs for the season. In his absence, the Sox have pushed Mike Lowell into the cleanup spot with Eric Hinske playing left field.

The Red Sox open a three-game stretch against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday as they look to rebuild their AL East lead after a disappointing series in New York. Tim Wakefield (16-10, 4.16) and Radhames Liz (0-1, 7.50) are the starters and Boston is a –220 favorite.

Three and easy in the Indians pen

The Cleveland Indians have been in their fair share of tight games this season. When manager Eric Wedge has had to go to his bullpen in those situations, he’s relied on the same three pitchers.

Wedge consistently uses Rafael Perez (1-1, 1.70) and Rafael Betancourt (3-0, 1.55) as relievers, before bringing in Joe Borowski (2-5, 5.53) to close. But there is concern as to whether three men can still carry the bullpen in September.

"You never want to give up the game," Wedge said when asked about resting the trio. "But if we have a chance to stay away from them, we're going to do it."

That may be difficult considering that so far this season the Indians have been involved in the second-most one-run games in the AL (43). That has led to Betancourt and Borowski working four of the last eight days, while Perez has worked five.

Wedge will be hoping this weekend’s series against the struggling Chicago White Sox gives him a chance to rest his bullpen stars. For Friday’s opener Fausto Carmona (14-8, 3.16) will do battle with Mark Buehrle (9-9, 3.50) on the hill. Cleveland is a –167 favorite.

        Cubs power outage

The Chicago Cubs rank 14th in the National League in home runs this season, but manager Lou Piniella insists that his team must stay aggressive at the plate and not rely on defense.

"We haven't been exactly knocking the cover off the ball, and the worst thing a manager can do is to get real conservative," Piniella said on Wednesday. "We've got to stay aggressive, we've got to execute."

Asked why the Cubs have only gone deep 104 times this season (compared to Milwaukee’s NL-leading 180), Piniella responded: "Maybe the wind is blowing out on top, and inside the ballpark, it's blowing in – who the heck knows?"

The Chicago lineup will be eager to find the long ball when they face Houston Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez in the first of a three-game series on Friday. The Cubs counter with Sean Marshall and are –162 favorites.

        Winning the West

Seattle Mariners manager John McClaren has made it clear that despite falling five games behind the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West, he is still focused on winning the division.

"We want to win the West," McLaren told MLB.com. "That's our goal. There are so many different wild card scenarios that could happen. So many teams involved."

"Your focus is always to win your division. We haven't changed that focus. It's still within our reach," he added. "When you start looking at the wild card, you're kind of giving in a little bit."

The Mariners had closed to within one game of Los Angeles on August 24, but they then lost two of four to Texas before being swept by the Angels this week. They go into Thursday's action five games back.

On Friday they face Toronto in the first of three games. Jarrod Washburn (9-11, 4.13) will square up to the Jays' Shaun Marcum (11-5, 3.62) and Seattle is a +104 underdog with the total set at 9.

        Cards' Rolen concern

The St. Louis Cardinals could be without Gold Glove third baseman Scott Rolen for an extended period of time after his troublesome left shoulder flared up this week.

"At this point everything's a possibility," Rolen said on Wednesday when asked if he could miss the rest of the season. "I've been playing with the pain for a while now, but during the game last night I knew I couldn't keep this up. So I'm going to see what the doctor says on Friday."

Rolen is batting .265 with eight home runs and 65 RBIs for the season. If he does go on the DL he will join six other Cardinals players, including Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder and Adam Kennedy.

The injury-ravaged Cards are only four games back in the NL Central as they enter this weekend’s series with the Cincinnati Reds. The series starts on Friday with the Cardinals' Anthony Reyes (2-13, 5.33) and Reds' Tom Shearn (1-0, 3.86) taking the hill. St. Louis is a –150 favorite with the total set at 9 ½.

The Texas Rangers completed a three-game sweep of the bumbling Chicago White Sox with a 5-1 victory Thursday night. Chicago made four errors in one inning and lost for the 16th time in 19 games -- hours after manager Ozzie Guillen reiterated how frustrated he is with his team. ... Tampa Bay completed their first road sweep in more than two years with an 8-6 victory over Baltimore that extended the Orioles' losing streak to nine games. SEASONS
            Aug. 31

1915 -- Jim Lavender of the Chicago Cubs pitched a 2-0 no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Giants.

1935 -- Vern Kennedy of the Chicago White Sox pitched a no-hitter to beat Cleveland 5-0. Kennedy also had a bases-loaded triple.

1937 -- Rudy York of the Tigers hit his 17th and 18th home runs of the month to set a major league record as Detroit beat Washington 12-3.

1959 -- Sandy Koufax of Los Angeles struck out 18 Giants for a National League record as the Dodgers beat San Francisco 5-2.

1974 -- In a Northwest League game, Portland manager Frank Peters rotated his players so each man played a different position each inning. The strategy worked for an 8-7 win over Tri-Cities.

1990 -- The Griffeys -- 20-year-old Ken Jr. and his dad, Ken, 40 -- made major league history, leading Seattle to a 5-2 victory over Kansas City. The Griffeys were the first father and son to play together in the big leagues.

2001 -- Pitcher Danny Almonte, who dominated the Little League World Series with his 70 mph fastballs, was ruled ineligible after government records experts determined he actually is 14, and that birth certificates showing he was two years younger were false. The finding nullified all the victories by his Bronx, N.Y., team, the Rolando Paulino Little League All-Stars, and wiped out all its records -- including Almonte's perfect game and an earlier no-hitter.

2004 -- Omar Vizquel went 6-for-7 to tie the American League record for hits for a nine-inning game in Cleveland's 22-0 victory over the New York Yankees. The 22-0 beating, was the largest loss in the history of the Yankees' organization. Cleveland matched the largest shutout win in the major leagues since 1900, set by Pittsburgh against the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 16, 1975.

2005 -- Florida's Jeremy Hermida became the first player in more than a century and the second to hit a grand slam in his first major league at-bat, connecting in the seventh inning off the St. Louis Cardinals' Al Reyes.

2005 -- Albert Pujols hit an RBI triple in St. Louis' 10-5 victory over the Florida Marlins, giving him 100 RBIs this season. Pujols became the first player in major league history to hit at least 30 home runs and drive in 100 runs in his first five seasons in the majors.

2006 -- The Chicago White Sox became the first major league team to hit 200 home runs in seven straight seasons following A.J. Pierzynski's homer in a 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay.

Today's birthdays: Ramon Ramirez 26; Clay Henry 28; Frank Robinson 72.

                Streaking Pitchers

                Friday, August 31

                HOT

Tim Wakefield (Boston Red Sox) – Wakefield has been the stingiest, if not the hottest pitcher in the bigs of late. The knuckleballer is on fire and shows no sign of cooling down. He looks to retain the league lead in wins today, matching his career high of 17. Wakefield hasn’t surrendered a run in his last three starts – a span of 22 shutout innings – where he struck out 17 and allowed only nine hits. Wakefield is 8-1 in his last nine home starts and he faces a struggling Baltimore side in the midst of an eight game losing skid. He has dominated the birds collecting losses in only three of his 30 career appearances. The Red Sox (-231) look to continue the trend tonight at home against the Orioles (+213).

Kyle Kendrick (Philadelphia Phillies) – The rookie right-hander is going for his third straight victory tonight when he faces the Florida Marlins. He has a respectable 3.89 ERA this season and has allowed three or fewer runs in 10 of his 14 starts. Kendrick is 2-1 in his last three outings, allowing six hits and one run in his last match against San Diego. The Phillies are –130 favorites to match their six-game winning streak with a victory tonight over the Marlins (+122).

                COLD

Kyle Davies (Kansas City Royals) – Davies has lost his last three starts and has only one win in the month of August. He was chased from his last outing after two pitiful innings, posting a 31.50 ERA and serving up two homers. Davies has a 9.75 ERA in his last three starts. Davies has only pitched past the fifth inning once in his six starts, following a stint in the minors. He will face the Twins (-173) as a +165 underdog in the first game of a doubleheader.

Sergio Mitre (Florida Marlins) – Mitre has not won a game in over a month and will look to rebound from his last outing against Cincinnati where he gave up seven runs and 10 hits. The righty has a 9.18 ERA in his last three starts and has given up at least five runs in six of his past seven games. The Marlins are a discouraging 3-12 in Mitre’s last 15 home starts. Florida is a +122 dog tonight against the red-hot Phillies (-130).

Wandy Rodriguez (Houston Astros) – Rodriguez is 0-2 in his last three starts, posting a 7.63 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. He struggles away from Minute Maid Park with a horrendous 7.80 ERA compared to a brilliant 2.28 ERA at home. Rodriguez has given up 11 runs in his last 9 1/3 innings and the Astros have lost 10 of 11 when he faces a winning team on the road. Houston (+154) is in tough this afternoon against the favored Cubs (-162).

                        Friday, August 31

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks (-109, 9 ½)

It’s now or never for the Colorado Rockies as they face division-leading Arizona this weekend. Colorado sits 6 ½ games out of the top spot in the NL West.

They have won four their last five games after a barren spell in mid-August saw them lose four of six. Strong pitching has continued to be the backbone of the Rockies' success – the staff has posted a 2.77 ERA during over the past six games.

The Rox should also be able to take of advantage of today’s D-Backs starter, Livan Hernandez (9-9, 4.86). Hernandez is pitching on just three days rest to enable a shuffle to Arizona's rotation. Hernandez is 0-4 with a 5.23 ERA on the four occasions he's started on limited rest.

                        Pick: Rockies +101

Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays (-122, 9)

The Seattle Mariners have lost six straight games, posting a 6.10 ERA over that stretch. They'll hope to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season when they open a three-game series in Toronto tonight.

The Mariners are one game behind New York in the wild-card race and 5 ½ behind the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West. Last night’s 6-5 loss to the Cleveland Indians ensured Seattle’s fourth losing streak of six games or more this season.

Meanwhile, Toronto is returning home from a 10-game road trip out west during which they posted a respectable 6-4 record. The Jays are 16-5 in their last 21 home games against the Mariners and today hand the ball to Shaun Marcum (11-5, 3.62), who is chasing his seventh win in nine starts.

                        Pick: Blue Jays -122

San Francisco Giants at Washington Nationals (-112, 8 ½)

The Giants' playoff chances ended a long time ago, but this month they have played like a team with something to prove. They've won 11 of their last 14 games while posting a .278 batting average and 3.26 staff ERA. San Francisco is still the only team in the NL West under .500, but they recently put together a six-game winning streak – their second longest of the season.

The last time these teams met, Barry Bond hit his record-breaking home run, but he is not going to feature in Friday’s opener as the Giants continue to use him sparingly.

San Francisco sends reliever-turned-starter Kevin Correia (2-6, 3.84) to the mound as he searches for his second win in three starts against a Washington side that's lost six straight games.

                        Pick: Giants +104
