    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- In his last three starts, Mike Mussina has faced 59 hitters and 20 of them scored; only 26 made an out.

-- Classic Petco pitcher's duel; Peavy-Hernandez. Blum hit a two-run tater in 7th inning, and Padres won game, 3-1.

-- You think pennant races are making people tense? Pair of managers, Manuel and McLaren, got tossed in first inning of their games Monday night.

-- Nolan Richardson once beat Mike Krzyzewski in NCAA title game; they met again in Vegas Monday-- Richardson's gritty Mexicans lost, but they competed hard for 40 minutes Just too tough to press better athletes; it was 127-100.

-- Vikings traded for Kelly Holcomb; they didn't trade for a 3rd-string QB, so that says a lot about where Minnesota's offense stands, with the season about to begin.

-- Why does it take until December 10 to sentence Michael Vick? It can't be that difficult a decision.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

      13) Move over, Shawn Kemp; Broncos' RB Travis Henry has apparently fathered nine kids by nine different women in four different states. He had to borrow money from the Titans last year to make his child support payments. Life is just lot more complex for some people than it is for others.

      12) Bernhard Langer turned 50 Monday, making him a prime contender to make lot more money on senior golf tour, one of few places where it is better to be a rookie than a veteran.

      11) This week's PGA event, in Boston, is the only event that goes Friday-Monday, to take advantage of the holiday.

      10) Last week I touted Buccaneer WR David Boston as a guy who could be a fantasy sleeper; later last week, Boston got a DUI arrest, so scratch that recommmendation. My bad.

      9) Looks like the NHL is going to have its next outdoor game in Buffalo. When I write my travel guide, one of the things I will want to avoid in a hometown is anywhere they can play NHL games outdoors. Beach volleyball outdoors is better.

      8) Red flag for the Mets: John Maine hasn't finished the sixth inning in any of his last six starts. Good news for the Mets is that Pedro Martinez' rehab start Monday went very well.

      7) Tulsa Hurricane not only has a new football coach, they've got co-offensive and co-defensive coordinators. Where I am from, that translates to too many cooks in the kitchen.

      6) Cincinnati Reds have had many great players in the last 40 years, but only one to hit homers in four straight appearances at the plate? The forgettable Art Shamsky, back in 1966.

      5) What does it say about the Chiefs that Damon Huard was named starting QB after a weekend where he didn't play?

      4) Asante Samuel proved that he is no fool Monday, as he is no longer holding out from the Patriots. Last year, Samuel's salary was $460,000; this year, he is going to make $486,675 a game. Why exactly was he holding out in the first place?

      3) Rumors have Mark Cuban being a contestant on this year's edition of Dancing with the Stars; lets hope hes a little easier on the judges than he is on NBA refs, who could use a little love these days.

      2) It was estimated Monday that in this great country of ours, 44.6 million households have at least one dog.

      1) Atlanta Falcons sold out their last 51 regular season games for two reasons,
      a) when Arthur Blank first bought the team, they reduced the prices of upper level end zone seats, making games affordable for average people, and............
      b) Michael Vick's appeal in a city where 30% of population is African-American. They still have a pretty good team; time will tell if a contending Falcon team will still sell games out.

          MLB Betting Notes
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Tuesday’s MLB betting notes

          Alfonso’s back

Chicago Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who has been on the shelf with a torn quad since August 5, will be taken off the disabled list in time for Chicago’s big series with the second-place Milwaukee Brewers that kicks off Tuesday.

"He's ready to go,'' said Cubs manager Lou Piniella. ''He's going to have to be a little careful, but he knows what he needs to do. We could wait another week, but he's not going to get any better than he is. It's a credit to him because he's a hard worker and a good healer.''

The Cubs went just 8-11 without Soriano, but managed to gain 2 ½ games in the standings while the Brewers struggled. Soriano will resume leadoff duties, pushing Ryan Theriot, who is 8-for-23 (.348) with five RBIs in his last five games, down to the No. 2 spot.

          Playing for pride

Two years ago Ozzie Guillen managed the Chicago White Sox all the way to a World Series title. Now, he’s just trying to get his club out of the AL Central basement with a strong showing against the AL East cellar-dwelling Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

It’s not exactly a matchup that grabs your attention, but Guillen has had problems keeping his team motivated for a while now.

"That's the schedule, we've got to continue to play," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "That's the reason I had the meeting after the game [Saturday]. I don't want anybody to quit. I don't want anybody to feel sorry for themselves. I want them to [play] with pride. It's not easy when you've been spoiled the last three years playing for something.

"It still means a lot. Just play the game the way you're supposed to. You're making a bunch of money to do it. Go out and do it. Don't think that game is any different than any other one. Maybe there's going to be [fewer] people in the stands, but for us it's another job."

The White Sox had dropped five straight and 13 of 15 heading into Monday’s game with Tampa Bay.

          Cy guy?

Arizona Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb is making a huge bid for his second straight Cy Young award. He’s won his last six starts (all of which played under the posted total) and allowed just two runs during that stretch – both of which came in his last start.

Webb faces off against Justin Germano and his San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

          Now or never

It might be too late already, but the New York Yankees can kiss the AL East title goodbye unless they show up for a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox starting Tuesday. The Yanks head into Monday’s action 7 ½ games behind Boston and two games back of the Mariners in the wild card chase.

Yankees captain Derek Jeter is heading into this series a little banged up. He took a rare day off on Sunday after tweaking his knee coming out of the batter’s box last week against Anaheim.

"I don't like to sit out any times, especially now. But the point of it is, you hope you sit out one day and then it doesn't bother you anymore," Jeter told reporters. "It's all right. It's just a little nagging thing. It's not that big a deal."

          Chase-ing the Mets

If the Philadelphia Phillies weren’t six games back of the visiting New York Mets in the NL East, Chase Utley would probably still be rehabbing a broken right hand in Double-A ball.

Utley was just 1-for-10 during his three-game rehab stint at Reading, but didn’t report any discomfort so the Phillies will have him back in the lineup for the first game of the series on Monday.

The second baseman was batting .336 with 17 homers and 82 RBs before hitting the disabled list on July 26. Philadelphia has dropped three of its last four games against the Mets.

            Baseball – Injury Report

            MLB

            Tuesday, August 28

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Injuries
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            MLB Infirmary Report

Remember all those injured players that were supposed to be back on the field around September 1? Well, that day is now fast approaching. Here is the MLB Infirmary Report:

Atlanta - Edgar Renteria SS 15-Day Disabled List
Renteria was placed on the disabled list once again on August 23 after he re-injured his ankle. The Braves will now have to make due at shortstop for the next couple of weeks.

Boston- Manny Ramirez OF Day-to-Day (sore back)
The Red Sox kept Ramirez out of the lineup against the White Sox on Sunday to let him rest his sore back. The outfielder, though, is expected to play once again on Tuesday.

Colorado - Willy Taveras OF 15-Day Disabled List
Taveras could be back stealing bases for the Rockies by the end of the week. The speedy outfielder will test his quad injury at Triple-A Colorado Springs before returning.

Detroit - Gary Sheffield DH 15-Day Disabled List
The Tigers finally placed Sheffield on the disabled list on Monday afternoon, and he'll be out of the lineup with his nagging shoulder injury for at least the next week and a half.

Houston - Roy Oswalt P Day-to-Day (strained oblique)
The Astros' ace left his most recent start early because of a strained oblique, and he missed a turn in the rotation last week. Oswalt, though, is likely to pitch on Wednesday.

LA Angels - Casey Kotchman 1B Day-to-Day (sprained finger)
Kotchman suffered injuries to two of his fingers hitting against Yankees closer Mariano Rivera last week. The first baseman is still expected to miss a few more Angels games.

LA Dodgers - Nomar Garciaparra 3B 15-Day Disabled List
Garciaparra is still on the disabled list nursing a calf injury, and the Dodgers aren't expected to activate him and insert him back into the lineup until sometime next week.

Milwaukee - Ben Sheets P 15-Day Disabled List
The Brewers probably need the boost that Sheets' return could give them in the very-tight NL Central race. The ace pitcher might be activated from the DL during the week.

Minnesota - Joe Mauer C Day-to-Day (strained hamstring)
Mauer suffered a hamstring injury on the weekend and the Twins are now expected to be without their top catcher for the next few days, or even longer if a DL stint is needed.

NY Mets - Pedro Martinez P 60-Day Disabled List
The Mets continue to wait on Martinez, who continues to make rehab starts in the minor leagues. New York is hoping Martinez can start contributing in the next couple of weeks.

Philadelphia - Cole Hamels P 15-Day Disabled List
Ideally the Phillies would get Hamels back in their rotation by the end of the week. The lefthander will test his elbow in the bullpen this week and decide if he's ready to return.

San Diego - Michael Barrett C 15-Day Disabled List
Barrett was placed on the DL with a concussion back on August 11, and he still hasn't been cleared to return to the lineup. The Padres are likely to send him on a rehab stint.

San Diego - Chris Young P Day-to-Day (sore back)
Young is still listed as day-to-day with a sore back on the Padres' injury list, and the team hasn't announced when he will make his next start. Young has missed one outing.

St. Louis - Mark Mulder P 15-Day Disabled List
The Cardinals are making a late run at a playoff berth, and Mulder could be back in their rotation by the end of the week. The lefty still has a Triple-A rehab start on his agenda.

                WNBA - Preview

                WNBA
                Preview: Liberty at Shock

                Tuesday, August 28

                Preview: Liberty at Shock

After going more than two weeks without a win, the Detroit Shock have recaptured the form that led them to last year's WNBA championship and the best regular-season record in the league this season.

To continue their title defense, however, the Shock will have to beat a New York Liberty team that has given them trouble this year.

The Shock and Liberty square off in a deciding Game 3 in Detroit on Tuesday for the right to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

Detroit clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs by beating Indiana on Aug. 11. While resting some of their key players for the playoffs, however, the Shock went on to lose their last four games of the regular season - beginning with an 85-84 defeat at New York on Aug. 12.

The Shock didn't recover in the playoff series opener, falling 73-51 at Madison Square Garden to extend their losing streak to five games - their longest since opening the 2002 season with 13 consecutive defeats. It was Detroit's largest margin of defeat since the opening game of the WNBA finals against Sacramento last Aug. 30.

Detroit, though, finally bounced back with a 76-73 win in Game 2 on Sunday, avoiding elimination. Cheryl Ford started for the first time since July 20 and made a go-ahead layup with 44 seconds remaining to lead the Shock.

"I told our players that at some point in this game, 'Your heart will be severely tested' - and it was," coach Bill Laimbeer said. "We got down to a point where it was an even ballgame, last minute and our season was on the line. But we made the right plays when we had to make the right plays."

Ford, who missed the last month of the season with a knee injury, said her knee felt fine despite the physical nature of the game.

"It's cool though. It's what it's all about. Playoff time," Ford told the Shock's official Web site after finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. "I love to bang so you're going to get some bumps and bruises here and there. You just got to keep playing."

Detroit could use another strong contribution from Ford to eliminate the Liberty, who have split six games with the Shock this year, including the postseason. Two of those games went to overtime and two others were decided by three points or fewer.

New York hopes to build on Sunday's strong second half. The Liberty trailed by as many as 17 points, but rallied to tie the game in the final minutes.

"We did what we've been doing all year - we fight back, we fight back and we give ourselves a chance," coach Pat Coyle said.

New York has lost both of its playoff series since ousting Detroit in the first round in 2004.

The Shock, on the other hand, are looking to win their fourth straight series. They have won five of six playoff games at The Palace of Auburn Hills over the last two seasons.

"(The Liberty) had their chance to win the series - we could not win the series today," Laimbeer said Sunday. "We had to stave off elimination to get that chance to win the series. Now, it's our turn to win the series."

                    Streaking Pitchers

                    Tuesday, August 28

                    HOT

Brandon Webb (Arizona Diamondbacks) - Webb's campaign for back-to-back Cy Young awards continues tonight when he goes for his seventh straight win. Milwaukee scored two runs against him Wednesday night, but opponents are scoreless against the righty in his previous five. Books have tagged the D-Backs as favorites in five of Webb's last six and the D-Backs cashed in each time. They are favored again tonight when Webb (14-8, 2.63 ERA) takes the mound at Petco Park against the Padres.

Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants) - Cain is on a late-season upswing. He is 3-1 in his last four starts and has won his last two after a dismal summer stretch of just two wins in 14 games from May 19 to August 3. He is 6-13 on the season but has a decent 3.67 ERA and the Giants have played under in Cain's last seven starts. Books have set the total at 8 1/2 today when San Fran hosts Colorado.

                    COLD

Nate Robertson (Detroit Tigers) - The Tigers' 16-0 assault on the Yankees behind Justin Verlander Monday night is gonna be a hard act to follow for Nate Robertson (7-10, 4.80 ERA). The lefty has just one win in his last seven starts and is 1-7 in his last eight games on the road. Detroit is a -112 road fave against Kansas City tonight. Robertson is an even 4-4 in nine career starts against the Royals.

Ervin Santana (Los Angeles Angels) - Santana hasn't recorded a win since a 9-3 defeat over St. Louis on June 9 and has a 4.30 ERA in that span. Two of Santana's five wins this season came against the Mariners but it's little reprieve from an otherwise disagreeable 5-12 record this season. Santana and the Angels will try to pick up another game in the AL West when they face the M's today as +103 underdogs.

                      Minnesota at Cleveland
The Indians jumped on Minnesota early last night and cruised to an 8-3 victory behind Paul Byrd's solid pitching. The Tribe can count on a similar effort tonight from Jake Westbrook, who has turned his season around after starting the year 1-6 with a 6.20 ERA. In his last five starts, Westbrook is 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA, including eight scoreless innings in his last appearance against Detroit on Thursday. Minnesota starter Boof Bonser did pick up a victory in his last start, but it was his first after going 0-8 in his previous 12 and came against a slumping Baltimore club. Bonser and the Twins should have a tougher time tonight, making Cleveland a good pick (-155) according to Dunkel, which has the Indians favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (-155). Here are all of today's games.

-Troy Glaus, Blue Jays, drove in the go-ahead run in the 12th inning to propel Toronto over Oakland 6-2.

-Brian McCann, Braves, hit his second grand slam in a week and Atlanta routed Florida 13-2.

-Chase Utley, Phillies, had three hits, including a solo homer, in his return from the DL and Philadelphia beat the New York Mets 9-2.

-Justin Verlander, Tigers, allowed three hits in seven innings and Detroit pounded the New York Yankees 16-0.

                        FIRED

Less than two years ago, the Houston Astros were celebrating their first National League pennant. On Monday, they were starting over. Manager Phil Garner and general manager Tim Purpura were fired by owner Drayton McLane, who said the franchise ''needed a fresh start'' after a plunge to the bottom of the NL Central. Bench coach Cecil Cooper was appointed interim manager.

                        TRIPLE PLAY

Cleveland beat Minnesota 8-3 on Monday on the strength of a Victor Martinez homer and their first triple play since 1992. With runners at first and second in the seventh inning, Indians reliever Rafael Perez came on and got Mike Redmond to hit a hard grounder to third baseman Casey Blake, who fielded it and quickly stepped on the bag. Blake then threw to second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera, whose relay to first baseman Martinez easily beat the slow-footed Twins catcher. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the third triple play of the season.

                        ACES WILD

John Lackey pitched his second straight seven-hit shutout against the Mariners, and the Los Angeles Angels beat Seattle 6-0 on Monday. He also blanked Seattle on July 31 and hasn't allowed a run in 24 innings against them. It was his 10th career complete game and seventh shutout. ... Jake Peavy allowed one run and three hits in seven innings to lead San Diego past Arizona 3-1. Peavy tied his career high in victories with 15. He struck out 11 for the third straight start and reached double digits for the eighth time this year, pushing his NL lead to 197.

                        STREAKING

Matt Holliday extended his hitting streak to a career-high 17 games in Colorado's 4-1 loss to San Francisco on Monday. Holliday's hitting streak is the longest by a Rockies player since Jeffrey Hammonds hit in 18 straight from May 29-June 21, 2000. ... Troy Tulowitzki also extended his hitting streak to 12 games for Colorado in the loss.

                        SNAPPED

Jose Contreras got his first win as a starter in two months and the Chicago White Sox edged Tampa Bay 5-4 on Monday. Contreras (7-16), who leads the major leagues in losses, had dropped nine straight starts since beating Florida on June 18 and had lost 13 of 14. His lone victory since beating the Marlins was in relief against Cleveland on Aug. 8. ... Cleveland beat Minnesota 8-3, ending the Twins' season-high winning streak at five.

                        SPEAKING

''I'll take 0-for-4 every night - that means I'm in the game long enough to get four at-bats and we're hitting the ball.'' - Atlanta hurler Lance Cormier, on being the only Braves starter without a hit in a 13-2 rout of Florida on Monday. Cormier pitched seven innings, allowing two runs and six hits to get his first win this season.

                        SEASONS Aug. 28

1926 - Emil Levsen of the Cleveland Indians pitched two complete-game victories over the Boston Red Sox, 6-1 and 5-1. He did not strike out a batter in either game. The Indians used the same lineup in both games.

1951 - The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Giants 2-0, snapping the Giants' 16-game winning streak. The streak enabled the Giants to cut the Dodgers' 13 1/2-game lead to six. 1971 - In the nightcap of a doubleheader, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Rick Wise hit two home runs to help himself to a 7-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

1977 - Steve Garvey of Los Angeles hit three doubles and two home runs in five at-bats, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 11-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. One of Garvey's homers was a grand slam.

1977 - In a 6-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, Nolan Ryan of the California Angles struck out 11 batters to pass 300 strikeouts for the fifth time in his career.

1990 - Ryne Sandberg became the first second baseman in history to have consecutive 30-homer seasons, leading the Cubs to a 5-2 victory over the Houston Astros.

1992 - The Milwaukee Brewers set an American League record with 31 hits and 26 singles in a 22-2 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays.

1996 - The Cleveland Indians finished the season 12-0 against Detroit Tigers to become the seventh team to sweep a season series since 1900.

2001 - Alex Rodriguez hit his 40th home run, becoming the second shortstop in major league history to reach the mark in four straight seasons, as the Texas Rangers beat the Minnesota Twins 10-1. Rodriguez joined Ernie Banks (1957-60) as the only shortstops with four consecutive 40-homer seasons.

2003 - Eric Gagne set a major league record with his 44th straight save this season as Los Angeles beat Houston 6-3. Gagne eclipsed Tom Gordon's 1998 record of 43 in a row to begin a season.

Today's birthdays: Carlos Quentin 25; Ryan Madson 27; Jay Witasick 35.

Hot lines: Tuesday’s best MLB bets

Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals (+104, 9)

The Tigers, fresh from winning three of four against the Yankees, travel to Kauffman Stadium hoping to continue their traditional dominance over the Royals.

Last night, Detroit recorded a 16-0 rout of the Yankees in the finale of that series, with Placido Polanco, Ryan Raburn and Brandon Inge leading the way for the hot-hitting offense. It was Detroit's first series win in over a month.

The Tigers hand to ball to Nate Robertson (7-10, 4.80) tonight, hoping he can build on one of his best starts of the year. He gave up just four hits and no walks in eight innings of work against Cleveland on Thursday.

Detroit is 14-1 in Kansas since the start of the 2006 season and has won eight of 12 against its division rivals this season.

                          Pick: Detroit -112

Toronto Blue Jays at Oakland Athletics (-117, 8 ½)

The Blue Jays were swept by the Athletics over three games in Toronto last week, but got some revenge with a 6-2 win at McAfee Coliseum on Monday. It was only their third win in eight games, but there have been signs the Jays offense is coming back to life.

After scoring just 20 runs in seven games last week, the Jays have managed 16 in the past three alone. Third baseman Troy Glaus broke out of a 13-for-69 slump last night when he batted in the go-ahead run in the 12th inning with a double off Alan Embree.

Oakland has been outscored 39-11 on its current four-game losing streak. The team will attempt to reverse that trend by starting Chad Gaudin (10-9, 4.12), who has a 2.08 ERA in seven relief appearances and one start against the Blue Jays.

                          Pick: Toronto +109

Los Angeles Angels at Seattle Mariners (-111, 10)

Seattle will try to snap a three-game losing streak against division rivals Los Angeles tonight. The M's will be expecting big things from sluggers Raul Ibanez and Ichiro Suzuki, both of whom have excelled against the Angels.

Ibanez is 6-for-13 in his career against today’s starter Ervin Santana (5-12, 6.03), while Suzuki is batting .414 against the Halos. The Mariners lead the majors this month with a .329 batting average.

Angels starter Santana is winless in his last six starts with a 8.81 ERA, so Tuesday’s game offers Seattle a great chance to snap their losing streak and maintain their two-game lead over the Yankees in the AL wild-card race.

                          Pick: Seattle -111

                              MLB (Tuesday): Minnesota vs Cleveland

Cleveland plays host to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night and will send Jake Westbrook to the mound to face Boof Bonser. We know that 14 of 26 match ups have gone Under the posted total between these two when playing in Cleveland over the last three seasons. Jake Westbrook has seen 13 of his 17 go Under this season and 9 of 10 have fallen Under the Total at home. Boof Bonser has gone Under in 15 of his 23 starts this year and a perfect 3-0 Under his last three overall. Technical Support for our selection comes from Cleveland who is 13-2 Under in home games vs. an AL starting pitcher whose ERA is 4.70 to 5.20 over the last 3 seasons, 40-21 Under in home games vs. an AL team with an on base percentage .330 or worse in the second half of the season over the last 3 seasons and 17-6 Under in August games this season. Westbrook is 11-2 Under as a favorite of -110 or higher this season and 7-0 Under vs. an AL team with an on base percentage .330 or worse this season. Minnesota is 23-9 Under vs. a decent bullpen whose WHIP is 1.350 to 1.450 this season and 20-8 Under vs. teams who strand 7.5 or more runners on base per game this season. Bonser is 18-6 Under when the total is 9 to 9.5 over the last 2 seasons and 9-1 Under in the second half of the season this season. We will recommend a play on the Under in Cleveland on Tuesday night.
