Toronto Blue Jays/Oakland Athletics Total Points UNDER 8
Anaheim Angels ML
(Wayne's GOY) Mentioning also Lackeys 12-4 record at night with a 2.94 ERA. Away he is 9-4 with a 3.12 ERA. This is in sharp contrast to playing at home and in day games and is his best atmosphere for winning.
Batista for Seattle is 9-7 with a 4.45 ERA at night and a home record of 7-5 and 3.95 ERA at home. Probably a 4-2 game.
This Under should also be a winner tonight!
These two teams finished a three-game series this past week, with Oakland completing the sweep on Wednesday with a 4-1 win when right-hander Esteban Loaiza made his 2007 debut against Toronto’s A.J. Burnett. Loaiza and Burnett will take the mound again on Monday, facing each other for the second time in less than a week.
“The comeback series are very common so we don't change the price too much,” says lines consultant Peter Korner. “We will line-compare on this one. Both pitchers are pitching well and all we're really doing is switching over the home-field price.
“Because it is the same matchups, we get a break when setting the odds.”
Books tagged Oakland as a +174 underdog for last week’s game in Toronto. Now, with the venue switching to McAfee Coliseum, The A’s are listed at -101 while the Blue Jays opened as slight -107 favorites with Burnett back on the hill.
Loaiza missed the first four and half months of the season with multiple injuries but was in midseason form on Wednesday. He pitched almost eight innings and allowed only one run on three hits, tallying 109 pitches in his first big league game since last September.
"Unreal,'' Oakland’s Mark Ellis told the San Francisco Chronicle. “That's exactly what (Loaiza) was like the second half of last year. Esteban makes it look easy sometimes. It's nice to have him back out there.''
The Mexican hurler usually performs well at this time of the year. Last season he was named the American League pitcher of the month in August, going 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA. This year, bettors have little to go off of when wagering on his starts, but were very impressed with his debut effort.
“The Blue Jays hitting has been spotty recently but I do feel that Loaiza has a matchup advantage with the Blue Jays,” says Scott Rickenbach of Covers Experts. “Some lineups just don't match up well with hurlers and Loaiza has enjoyed some success against the Jays in his career.”
Toronto’s floundering offense is hitting .259 in August and averaging only four runs per game. The Blue Jays have scored three or fewer runs in 10 of their 23 games this month and ruined a solid effort from Burnett last Wednesday with a lack of run support.
Burnett gave up only one earned on four hits, striking out nine batters in a full seven innings of work. The right-hander, who also recently returned from injury, is 2-1 this month with a stellar 1.74 ERA.
“Burnett was rock solid in the start against the A's. It was only some poor defense behind him that led to three unearned runs and gave him the loss,” says Rickenbach. “I would not like to have to pick a side in what should be a pitcher's duel. If I was playing this game I'd at least take a look at the under.”
Sportsbooks opened Monday’s total at 8 runs and according to Korner, last week’s pitching clinic from both Loaiza and Burnett is the biggest reason. The 4-1 final finished well under Wednesday’s number of 8 ½-runs.
“What we go by is the results that we see, we won't have to go too in-depth and translate that over to the total, says Korner. “It was a low-scoring game (on Wednesday) so we’ll keep the total down for (Monday).”
