    Six-pack for Sunday

-- Love watching Argentina's national basketball team; they play the game the right way, making easy passes, hitting an open man, shooting open 3's. They should do instructional video-- I think they'd make a fortune.

-- For instance, in Saturday's win over Mexico, they hit 15 of 31 3's, and assisted on 23 of their 33 baskets. They're not overly athletic, but they play hard, and play as one.

-- Cardinals could be an exciting team to watch this season; they scored 31 points Saturday, and still lost.

-- Saratoga racetrack has had six starting gate mishaps so far this summer, causing them to refund $1.7M to gamblers.

-- Tim Wakefield now has 22-inning scoreless streak, quite a feat for a knuckleball pitcher.

-- Jeff Kent played in his 2,153rd game Saturday; he started one game at shortstop, playing for the Mets, whose second baseman that day was Willie Randolph, who was playing in his last major league game.

Sunday's List of 13: Name association with NFL teams

These are the people/things I first think about when I hear the teams' name; your list will probably be totaly different.

Giants-- Lawrence Taylor-- Arguably the greatest defensive player in the history of the NFL.

Cowboys—Roger Staubach/Michael Irvin—Both personified their Dallas teams that won multiples titles.

Eagles— Their passionate fans. There is a golfer named Boo Weekley, who just has to be named after an Eagles’ fan. If you never saw the movie Invinceable, rent it; good stuff.

Redskins— Hail to the Redskins—I can annoy certain friends of mine, just by humming the Redskins' fight song.

Packers—Vince Lombardi on NFL Films: "What the hell’s going on out there?!?!?!"

Bears—Dick Butkus/Gale Sayers—Two of the greatest players ever played on same team at same time, but never played in a playoff game.

Lions— Number 20—Lem Barney-Billy Sims-Barry Sanders. Has any team had three great players like this all wear the same number?

Vikings— Bud Grant—I’d love to know what he thinks of the Metrodome. Grant played in lowest-scoring NBA game ever, by the way, playing for the Minneapolis Lakers. Also won a Grey Cup title coaching up in Winnipeg.

Saints- Their logo, the fleur de lis; tremendous logo that was also used by the old Quebec Nordiques in NHL. Saints have had it on their helmets for forty years, and now it represents a team that has given a broken city hope.

Falcons—Sadly, Michael Vick is it, until further notice.

Panthers—John Kasay—The only original Panther left., and only kicker on list. A lefty, to boot.

Buccaneers—Derrick Brooks—For a team always known for defense, this quiet star has done nothing but play great since coming out of Florida State.

Rams—Mike Jones’ tackle of Kevin Dyson on last play of Super Bowl XXXIV. Every time I see it, I get chills, because it still looks like Dyson is going to score on the play. 49ers—Jerry Rice—The greatest receiver ever.

Seahawks— Jim Zorn—My friend Phil wrote him his first fan letter, and once went to Seahawks’ practice and played catch with Zorn, the day before a game with the Jets.

Cardinals—Don Coryell- The Cardiac Cards were the team to watch in mid-70’s, before the goofy Bidwills got rid of him, and he went home to San Diego, where the Chargers became the team to watch.

Patriots—Bill Belichick—Even with the ratty sweatshirt. Bills—Jim Kelly—Won four AFC titles in a row; will that ever be done again? Penn State wanted Kelly to go there, but to play linebacker. Whoops.

Jets—Joe Namath—Who’d you expect, Harry Theofiledes? Dolphins—Don Shula—Has most wins of any NFL coach; still casts a long shadow over whomever coaches the Fish.

Bengals— Paul Brown—This team is his creation; also was responsible for Bill Walsh coaching in NFL. One of league’s great minds.

Browns—Jim Brown—Looks like he could still play, and he might be 70 years old.

Ravens—Ray Lewis—My guy Big Dawg hates his pre-game antics, but I love his passion for the game; hope he goes into TV after he’s done playing.

Steelers—Chuck Noll—Simply, the most underrated coach in history of pro sports.

Colts—John Unitas/Peyton Manning—They could have had Elway, too.

Jaguars— No one, really, but Jack Del Rio was once catcher on USC baseball team with Randy Johnson, Mark McGwire on it. McGwire’s brother Dan was NFL’s tallest-ever (6-10) QB, but he played for the Seahawks.

Titans-- Jeff Fisher coached the Houston Oilers, Memphis Oilers, the Nashville Titans and now the Tennessee Titans. Plus, he married a USC song girl.

Texans— Hometown hero Vince You—what do you mean, they didn’t draft him? They picked a defensive end instead? Until further notice, this was the biggest moment in franchise history, and Young’s Titans will come to town every year.

Chiefs— Hank Stram and his red vest at Super Bowl IV, as Chiefs matriculated ball down the field and beat Vikings as a 17-point underdog.

Raiders—Al Davis—Who else? Michael Vick’s best chance to get back to NFL is for Davis to still be running the Raiders when he is reinstated.

      Chargers—Offense. Gillman-Alworth-Coryell-Fouts-Winslow Tomlinson.

Broncos—John Elway and his competitive drive. No one ever was better in 2:00 drill.

        MLS
        Sunday’s MLS preview and picks

Los Angeles Galaxy at Colorado Rapids (+240, draw +220, +100)

David Beckham won't make the trip to Colorado. Finally, somebody at the Galaxy had the common sense to realize that a 32-year-old man cannot perform at his best after three games in five days on two different continents.

His absence is a significant blow for L.A. While the results haven’t taken a massive upturn since Beckham’s arrival, the performances have. Without their star, it’s hard to see any creative force in the Galaxy midfield.

With the exception of Landon Donovan, the Galaxy lack a serious attacking threat – a major reason why they have only scored six times on the road this season. Worse still, they are one of only two MLS teams without an away win – the other being Real Salt Lake.

Colorado comes into this match full of confidence after two consecutive home wins over top opposition – Houston and New England. The Galaxy are not as good as either of those squads and are in real danger of falling to their fifth league loss in a row.

        Pick: Colorado +100

Real Salt Lake at Chivas USA (+500, draw +260, -200)

A look at the odds tells all you need to know about this game. Salt Lake are massive +500 underdogs – and for good reason. They are winless in eight games on the road this season, scoring just four goals while conceding 13.

Salt Lake did manage a shock 1-0 home win over Houston three weeks ago, but that was only their second win of the season and they were extremely lucky to get it. RSL have a multitude of serious problems. They struggle to create chances, score goals and defend. They've notched a league-worst 14 goals, conceded a division-worst 28 goals on their way to posting a league-worst 2-10-6 record.

It’s also why Chivas USA – the only team yet to lose a home game this season – will take all three points at a canter on Sunday.

        Pick: Chivas -200

                Sunday's NFL starter report

Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers (-3, 35)

Eagles coach Andy Reid told reporters his starters would play the entire first half and possibly some of the third quarter. He would not release his quarterback rotation, only saying Donovan McNabb would start. He also hinted McNabb may be pulled earlier than the rest of the first-string offense.

Top tight end L.J. Smith will not play on Sunday making it three consecutive games he’s missed. Smith wasn’t concerned about being absent from the preseason matchups.

“That’s the best thing about it: that it’s the preseason,” Smith said, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. “I’m not missing any real games or anything. Sure, I appreciate the help that the preseason brings, but the reality of it is I can’t make up any of the lost time so all I can do is hope and pray I’ll be ready for Sept. 9.”

The Steelers will have their best players on the field for the first half before giving way to the backups in the second. Head coach Mike Tomlin said backup QB Charlie Batch won’t see much action meaning the third and fourth quarters should belong to Brian St. Pierre and Bryan Randall.

Tomlin would also like to give Willie Parker the most action he’s had this preseason. The starting running back had four rushing attempts last week against the Washington Redskins.

                  Sunday’s MLB betting notes

                  Hot, for the Padres

The San Diego Padres scored an impressive 22 runs on 40 hits in their three-game series against the New York Mets this week, but that was simply a continuation of the hot hitting they’ve produced all month.

The Padres are batting .277 entering Saturday’s game against the Phillies, their best average in any month this season and the seventh best in the National League in August. Their last four consecutive games have gone over the total.

"We've hit the ball well all season, especially on the road," first baseman Adrian Gonzalez told MLB.com on Thursday. "When you play at Petco, it seems like you might not be as good offensively because of the ballpark. When we go on the road, we hit."

On Sunday, the Padres send Tim Stauffer (0-0, 17.18) to the mound for the second of three games against the Phillies. Philadelphia counters with Kyle Kendrick (6-3, 4.06) and is a –150 favorite with the total set at 11 ½.

                  Slumping ChiSox

The Chicago White Sox have lost 11 of their last 13 games and are last in the AL Central. They lost both games of a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox on Friday to fall 16 games under .500 for the first time since 1999.

"Twelve hours of my life I wasted and I'm not going to get it back," manager Ozzie Guillen told the press after Friday’s losses. "A tough day for everyone. Pitching, hitting, defense. You just name it. I think that's one of the reasons they're in first place and we're in last place."

In fact, Guillen’s analysis of Friday’s outings could be used a metaphor for the White Sox this season. They’ve struggled in every department and are 13th in the AL in pitching (4.87 ERA), last in the AL in batting (.246 average), and 13th in the majors in fielding (81 errors).

They send Javier Vazquez (11-6, 3.66) to the mound on Sunday to stop the surging Red Sox. Boston counters with John Lester (2-0, 5.67) and is a +104 underdog with the total set at 9 ½.

                  Rockies need response

The Rockies have been in some tough situations this season and fought their way back. Now they need to find that resilience again. They’ve gone 4-6 in their last 10 games and have fallen 4 ½ games behind in the NL wild-card race.

"We've worked too hard to get to this point in the season, where we're still playing for something," manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com. "We've just got to find a way to fight through it, show up and play better."

They've fought back before. After falling to a season-worst nine games below .500 in May the Rox recovered to win seven straight. And when they went 1-9 on a road trip in June they came back to win five straight.

The Rockies hope to start their next great recovery when they close out a three-game series against the Nationals on Sunday. Joel Hanrahan (3-1, 3.42) and Elmer Dessens (1-1, 6.66) are the starters and Colorado is a –140 favorite with the total set at 11.

Figgins hopes wrist can handle Toronto

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Chone Figgins aims to return to the lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays after missing five games due to a sprained left wrist.

The switch-hitter is batting .341 right-handed and .333 left-handed this season, and is fourth overall in the majors with his combined .335 average. He returns knowing his injury could reoccur with one swing of the bat.

"The doctors told me, 'You could swing the next two months and not have it bother you – but then one swing can irritate it,'" Figgins told MLB.com. "You talk to a lot of switch-hitters, when you don't swing that much from the right side and get in a game and try to fire on it, you sometimes feel it."

Figgins' return Sunday would be against Blue Jays righty Dustin McGowan (8-7, 4.19). Los Angeles sends Kelvim Escobar (14-6, 2.85) to the hill and is a –174 favorite with the total set at 8.

                          Milwaukee at San Francisco
Perhaps it's the relief from having the Bonds HR chase behind them, but the Giants are suddenly playing decent baseball and come into today's contest having won eight of their last 10. Instead it is the Brew Crew that continues to exhibit tension as Ned Yost's team has gone 5-13 since August 5. San Francisco will look to finish the sweep today behind rookie Tim Lincecum, who pitched eight innings of shutout ball the last time he faced the Brewers in Milwaukee on July 21. San Francisco looks like a good pick (-145) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Giants favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: San Francisco (-145). Here are all of today's games.

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets

Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox (-104, 9 ½)

The White Sox dropped to a new low after yesterday’s 14-2 loss to Boston. The 2005 World Series champs have lost 12 of their last 14 contests and are now 17 games out of first place.

“Obviously, nothing’s going right for us right now – we’re not getting good pitching, defense, hitting,” staff ace Mark Buehrle told the Chicago Tribune. “Anyway you look at it, we just suck. It’s going to be a long last month if we keep playing this way.”

The Red Sox have regained a comfortable lead in the AL East after winning seven of their last 10. Playing a four-game set against the White Sox doesn’t hurt either. Boston has outscored Chicago 66-20 in seven games this season.

                              Pick: Red Sox –104

Cleveland Indians at Kansas City Royals (+127, 8 ½)

The Indians are blessed with two ace starting pitchers in Fausto Carmona and C.C. Sabathia but they haven’t taken advantage of the tandem’s productivity. The two have a collective 1.91 ERA over their last 14 starts but Cleveland is just 4-10 in those games.

The Indians struggle to score three runs with either Cy Young contender on the hill, but they have no trouble tallying 11 runs with Paul Byrd tossing eggplants.

“That’s baseball,” manager Eric Wedge told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “It can be crazy.”

Expect things to even out and Carmona to get some help from a potent batting order.

                              Pick: Indians –135

Seattle Mariners at Texas Rangers (+140, 11)

Jose Vidro must feel like the luckiest man in baseball. After spending the first 10 years of his career in baseball’s form of purgatory with the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals franchise, Vidro finds himself in an unfamiliar position – a pennant race.

“A couple of times in Montreal, we got to September with a chance at the wild card, but that was it,” Vidro told the Tacoma News Tribune. “I’d talk to players on other teams about it, and they said you never take a race for granted – you never know if you’ll ever be in another.”

The designated hitter/second baseman isn't taking the opportunity for granted. He's batting .388 since the All-Star break.

This is classic look-ahead situation for the Mariners as they kick off a home series with the Los Angeles Angels tomorrow. We’d be a little more concerned if the Rangers weren’t sending the worst starting pitcher in majors to the bump today.

                              Pick: Mariners –148
