  • Maroth becomes first 20-game loser since '80

Mike Maroth became the first major league pitcher in 23 years to lose 20 games in a season as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 8-6 on Friday night.

Maroth (6-20) allowed eight runs and nine hits in three-plus innings, becoming the first 20-game loser since Oakland's Brian Kingman went 8-20 in 1980.

Kingman, who wanted to remain baseball's last 20-game loser, attended the game and brought a voodoo doll with him. It's the same doll he took to four other starts in which a major league pitcher could have lost his 20th game but didn't.

``I just don't want Mike to lose,'' Kingman said before the game.

Maroth wasted 2-0 and 5-2 leads as Kingman kept his doll -- nicknamed ``The King'' -- by his feet. Asked if he would destroy the doll if Maroth lost, Kingman said: ``He'll be 4-1. That's a whole lot better than I was, so I'm going to keep him.''

I actually feel sorry for him

I was hoping he wouldn't get that record.

I feel sorry for him myself, but what do u do.

It's not is fault, his not ready to be pitching in the majors along with some of his team mates. Any other team and these young pitchers are still in the minors. This deffinitly kills there moral and confidence.

But i still give these guys credit for trying.
    Good Luck to everyone

Richie: [after Gus hits a homerun] Wow and he did it without steroids.
    Clark: What's steroids?
Richie: Something that makes your pee-pee smaller.
Clark: There must be steroids in macaroni!

I agree I watch them all the time Maroth is going to be a good big league pitcher one day. But around seven or eight start ago he lost all confidences in himself and should have been taken out of the starting lineup or in the minors. But him and Bonderman are the tigers best starting pitchers.

      Nate Cornejo is just bad.

Gary Knotts will be good in around a year or two. But has alot of work to do.

Mark my words. Maroth, Bonderman and Knotts will all be good starting pitchers in the next year or two. They all have the tools just let you said should be in the minors working on them not in the majors.
