    Streaking Pitchers

    Saturday, August 25

    HOT

Tim Wakefield (Boston Red Sox) – BoSox bettors are loving Wakefield (15-10, 4.35 ERA) right now. Mr. Reliable is 8-2 both straight up and on the moneyline in his last 10 starts and looks to put up his third straight win – and first 16-win record in the bigs – when the Red Sox visit the White Sox this afternoon as -119 road faves. Opponents are scoreless in 14 innings against the veteran righty.

Tim Hudson (Atlanta Braves) – Once upon a time, the Atlanta Braves' starting rotation was a who's who of Cy Young winners. Tim Hudson is obviously not one to be outdone by his predecessors. He's making a strong case as Atlanta's top pitcher and goes for his sixth straight win against the Cards tonight. At 15-5 straight up (3.07 ERA), he is one win away from tying Josh Beckett for the most wins in the bigs. Since his last loss on June 19 against the Red Sox, Hudson has a 2.57 ERA in 11 starts. The Braves are 11-0 on the moneyline in that span.

    COLD

Matt Morris (Pittsburgh Pirates) – Even Pittsburgh is warm in August, so you can't blame Morris' poor performance on his move from sunny San Francisco to Steeltown. The righty is 0-1 in four starts with the Pirates and hasn't recorded a win since July 11 when he was still with the Giants. The Bucs are +101 road dogs against the Astros tonight.

Ted Lilly (Chicago Cubs) – In his last two outings, Lilly is a measly 0-1 and has given up nine earned runs. On Monday, he lasted six innings against the Cards and allowed five runs and seven hits. The Cubs are -115 favorites when they travel to Chase Field to face the D-Backs, but Lilly is 1-3 in his last four games when the Cubs were favored. After a Friday night pitching change, Arizona will counter with Doug Davis who has won three of his last four outings against the Cubbies.

        Washington at Colorado
The Nats blew a fine performance from Shaun Hill last night when Chad Cordero gave up five runs in the 9th in a 6-5 loss to the Rockies. While the comeback should give Clint Hurdle's club a much-needed emotional lift, they are going to face another hot starter today in Tim Redding, who has won each of his last two starts while allowing only two runs over 13 innings. Against a Rockies lineup still struggling to score runs consistently, Washington looks like a good underdog pick (+127) to bounce back according to Dunkel, which has the Nationals favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+127). Here are all of today's games.

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets

Oakland Athletics at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (-120, 8)

Go ahead and curse out loud fantasy owners. The Devil Rays have taken Rocco Baldelli out of his rehab assignment in Vero Beach because of general soreness. The outfielder, who's blessed with five-tool talent, hasn’t played since May 15 because of chronic hamstring problems.

The laughable thing about this setback for “Frankie fragile” is that he’s complaining of general soreness. The Rays think it’s a result of Baldelli changing his running style. Tampa Bay's management asked Baldelli to consider altering the way he took his strides to prevent further injury much like the New York Mets asked of Jose Reyes.

“We think it’s based on the fact that we’re changing his running mechanics,” Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon told the Tampa Tribune. “When the Mets did that to Reyes, apparently Reyes experienced the same kind of thing but then overcame that.”

Not sure if we can be quite as optimistic about Baldelli. The only injury this guy ever overcame was a scraped knee and that’s only after his mother kissed it better.

                Pick: Athletics +112

Florida Marlins at Cincinnati Reds (-108, 11)

Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez refuses to call up some of the organization's top prospects while the Triple-A ball club is still in the postseason chase.

“That’s the right thing to do,” Gonzalez told the Miami Herald. “These guys have been busting their butts to get to the playoffs. I would like to see some of these guys, but you don’t want to take three or four of their key guys off that team.

“The major league team pays the bills, but in this situation we will let them see how far they can go. We’re not going to the playoffs. It doesn’t look like it.”

Florida desperately needs a shot in the arm and a couple of youngsters might fit the bill. The Marlins have lost nine of their last 10.

                Pick: Reds -108

Chicago Cubs at Arizona Diamondbacks (+111, 9)

If you’re wondering how Arizona was able to turn its season around, take a peek at the boxscores. Manager Bob Melvin finally figured out the top of his batter order – bringing much-needed consistency and stability to the lineup card.

The 1-2-3 order of Chris Young, Orlando Hudson and Eric Byrnes has been set in stone since July 22, and the Diamondbacks have since gone 22-9. It’s a huge accomplishment for Melvin who has used 114 different lineups in 129 games.

“(Young) has been a productive hitter in that spot, and it is important to have Byrnsie in the middle to drive in some runs,” Melvin told the East Valley Tribune.

                Pick: Diamondbacks +111

Makin’ Canadian bacon: Week 9 CFL picks
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 8 was an out-and-out disaster on the handicapping front. There's no getting around it.

The Lions and Stampeders combined for 90 points (62 in regulation time) in a game I called to play under the 51-point total. I'd suggested that Joe Smith and Joffrey Reynolds were going to pound the ball for their respective teams, which they did. Unfortunately, the quarterbacks for both teams combined to hit 72 percent of their passes for 711 yards and seven touchdowns.

It was entertaining to watch, "the CFL at its best" as Calgary head coach Tom Higgins rightfully pointed out after the game. I couldn't enjoy it as much as most viewers, however, after realizing in the first quarter that we were in for a shootout.

Then there was the Riders' win over the Eskimos. As mentioned last week, Saskatchewan opened as 7-point home favorites and I'd have escaped with a push if I'd gone with the early line. By the time we got around to publishing the Week 8 Bacon, however, the Riders were 8 1/2-point faves. I took 'em anyway. Whoops.

Saskatchewan needed to score the last 15 points in a wild one in Regina to pull out a 39-32 win. Sure, a Luca Congi make from 32 yards in the fourth quarter would've made the difference for me with a payday, but I guess I can't complain, having not seen the bloody fourth quarter (well done, CBC).

So I'll approach Week 9 picks with a full stomach (thank you, Taco Bell) and a clear head (just watched Mandy Moore's "Chasing Liberty" on the Women's Network, a bad enough movie to empty your noggin' of any and all thoughts). Here we go – time to get back on the good side of .500.

                      CFL 2007ATS and O/U records
                      Team ATS, O/U
                      BC 4-4, 3-5
                      Calgary 3-5, 5-3
                      Edmonton 2-6, 4-4
                      Hamilton 3-4, 3-4
                      Montreal 3-4, 3-4
                      Saskatchewan 6-2, 4-4
                      Toronto 4-3, 2-5
                      Winnipeg 5-2, 4-3

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Montreal Alouettes (-7, 47 ½)
                      Saturday, August 25, 7 p.m. ET

Dozens of players will take to the field at Molson Stadium on Saturday night, but the pregame chatter will revolve around only two of them. To the relief of both Hamilton's Jesse Lumsden and Montreal's Jarrett Payton, the attention will be the result of their play rather than their bloodlines.

Lumsden, son of former CFL star fullback Neil, has become the face of the resurgent Ti Cats. Hamilton deserves better than its 1-6 record and actually scares opponents after being the closest thing to a guaranteed win for years on end. Lumsden has shown breakaway speed as well as a willingness to put his shoulder into defenders.

Payton, son of NFL great Walter, was dominant against Calgary two weeks ago. He overcame an early fumble to gain 160 yards on only 20 carries and led Montreal to a 12-point win. It was the Alouettes' second straight win on their home turf, but this past weekend's games proved once again that scoring points against Calgary is no big deal.

Hamilton has put in some yeoman efforts on the road this season and with Toronto sitting only one game ahead of the Ti Cats in the East, Tabbies backers can reasonably talk about the playoffs. Lumsden and an improving Hamilton passing game will prove to the doubters why that's the case on Saturday night.

                      Pick: Tiger Cats +7

I can't name the site this comes from Chado. It's a sports info site and I don't know anything about the guy who writes these. We just throw them in for general info, really.

Their baseball and football picks do very well at the start of sesons then become a good fade.

When it comes to CFL, I believe you! I've been watching and you do know exactly what you're talkiing about! Good luck today, Chado!
