      Hot

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - The Red Sox ace will try to earn his major league-leading 16th win this afternoon against the Chicago White Sox if the weather allows it. Last night a series of powerful storms caused the game to be postponed and more rain is in the forecast for today. As good as Beckett has been at Fenway Park this season, his best numbers are away from home. The right-hander is 8-1 with an AL-best 1.65 ERA in nine road starts this year and the under is 4-1 in his last five road starts. Beckett is 2-0 with a 4.60 ERA in three career starts against the White Sox.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) The Minnesota starter will try to build off one of the most dominant performances of his career tonight when the favored Twins take on the struggling Orioles. The right-hander struck out a franchise-record 17 batters in a 1-0 win over the Rangers on Sunday. Santana, the AL player of the week, improved to 20-2 with a 1.85 ERA in 28 August starts since 2003. The two-time Cy Young Award winner ranks second in the majors with 191 strikeouts this season. Santana is 3-1 with a 3.55 ERA in nine career appearances against the Orioles.

Felix Hernandez (Seattle Mariners) - Hernandez will try to win his fourth straight decision for Seattle tonight against the Rangers. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 3.71 ERA in his last five starts while the Mariners are 6-1 in Hernandez's last seven starts against the AL West. Hernandez has had great run support as the Mariners bats have scored at least seven runs in four of the last five games. Bettors beware though as Hernandez has struggled against the Rangers in eight career starts, going 2-4 with a 5.44 ERA.

Lenny DiNardo (Oakland Athletics) - DiNardo takes the hill today as one of the hottest pitchers in baseball. The left-hander is 5-0 with a 3.67 ERA in his past seven starts and has been very good in the last three, posting a 2.84 ERA. Other than four scoreless innings in relief against the Devil Rays on April 27, the A's starter has no record and a 3.38 ERA in five career games versus Tampa Bay. The under is 4-0 in DiNardo's last four starts against a team with a losing record.

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - Halladay is quietly having another strong season for the Blue Jays. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 3.19 ERA in four starts this month and is 14-5 with a 3.89 ERA for the season. Halladay already shut down the Angels on Aug. 14 for his major league-leading fifth complete game of the season. On the negative side the Jays ace is only 0-3 with a 3.81 ERA in his last four starts on the road. He's also 1-2 with an 8.01 ERA in six career outings at Anaheim. The under is 7-1-1 in Halladay's last nine starts against the Angels.

      Cold

Jon Garland (Chicago White Sox) - Garland will open up for the White Sox in today's doubleheader with Boston. The right-hander goes for his first win in five starts and is 8-9 with a 4.84 ERA on the season. Garland lasted only 2 2/3 innings Sunday against Seattle and gave up 10 runs and 10 hits in an 11-5 loss. The Sox starter is 2-4 with a 5.01 ERA in eight career starts against the Red Sox, including 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA when facing them at U.S. Cellular Field.

        Friday, August 23

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets (-110, 8)

Don’t count the Dodgers out of the NL West chase just yet. Los Angeles, which hadn’t won a series in a month and dropped 13 of the last 16, has won consecutive series and six of the last eight.

“You win games and then everyone’s outlook is different,” manager Grady Little told the Los Angeles Times. “A week ago we were sitting around the dugout (and) you’d think it was a dead dugout, a dead club. That’s natural when you’re not scoring runs.

“All of a sudden we’re scoring some runs and it looks like everyone is full of life when it’s the same human beings.”

The run production isn’t staggering but it’s certainly an improvement. Before the recent hot streak, L.A. had scored 10 runs in nine games.

        Pick: Dodgers +102

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals (-135, 9)

If the Braves make the playoffs it will be with a two-man starting rotation. John Smoltz and Tim Hudson are thoroughbreds but the rest of the starters might as well be Curly, Larry and Moe. Chuck James is a decent No. 3 but he was put on the DL to rest a tired arm.

“He’ll miss two starts, and this way he should be completely healed up,” Braves skipper Bobby Cox told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Every year this time he gets a tired arm – all through the minors – the last two starts of the year. As you know we play an extra month, so knowing that, we’re going to take the safe route.”

Edgar Renteria (ankle) will be able to give James some company in the dugout. The starting shortstop was put back on the disabled list after just one at-bat. Youngster Yunel Escobar has been a great fill in up the middle and he’s provided a steady bat in a booming batting order.

        Pick: Braves –135

Toronto Blue Jays at Los Angeles Angels (-109, 8)

Those pesky Seattle Mariners just won’t quit nipping at the heels of the Halos. The M's are now just one game back in the American League West with a showdown series slated for Monday.

If the Angels hope to have the lead in the division when they travel to Seattle, they’d better take care of the Jays. Toronto has taken three of four from Los Angeles so far this year and team ace Roy Halladay gets the ball today.

The 2003 AL Cy Young winner pitched a complete game one-hitter against the Angels just 10 days ago. L.A. manager Mike Scioscia no doubt had his hitters studying the video in preparation for the rematch.

        Pick: Angels –109

                  NFL
                  Pre-Season
                  Write-up

                  Friday, August 24

Week 3 preseason games are usually the ones where you get the most effort out of these teams. They're still exhibitions, however.

Vince Young needs good game here; he was suspended for the Titans' opener, then was loisy last week, so with next week's tilt the last, and therefore, useless preseason game, he needs a good one in Buffalo, vs Bills group that doesn't take exhibitions quite as seriously as most.

Carolina once lost Super Bowl to Patriots, so there has to be just a little lingering bitterness there. Brady missed at least part of the week, as his ex-girlfriend had their baby; not sure of his status in this one. With Carr backing up Delhomme, Panthers have better than average depth at QB, which helps in summer games.

Culpepper gets nod at QB for Raiders; he has looked good since Oakland signed him. Rams moved ball well on Chargers last week but couldn't hang on to ball. Raiders need to sell tickets, so think this game is slightly more important to them than to Rams, who seem to have had uneventful summer, the best kind.
