    Streaking Pitchers

    Thursday, August 23

    Hot

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - The Red Sox ace will try to earn his major league-leading 16th win tonight against the Chicago White Sox. As good as Beckett has been at Fenway Park this season, his best numbers are away from home. The right-hander is 8-1 with an AL-best 1.65 ERA in nine road starts this year and the under is 4-1 in his last five road starts. Beckett is 2-0 with a 4.60 ERA in three career starts against the White Sox.

Jeff Weaver (Seattle Mariners) - The Mariners starter has been weaving some magic of his own lately and will try to keep it going tonight against the red-hot Texas offense. Weaver, who is 5-10 with a 5.57 ERA this season, is riding a three-game winning streak into tonight's game. With the Rangers coming off the biggest offensive night in AL history, it will be up to Weaver to cool them off. The right-hander is 2-5 with a 5.25 ERA in nine starts and one relief appearance against the Rangers over his career. This will be his first time facing them this season.

Tom Glavine (New York Mets) - The future Hall of Famer will try to lead the Mets to a series win over the Padres tonight at Shea Stadium. Glavine is 4-0 over his last seven starts and has been particularly strong in his last four. Mets backers should feel confident with Glavine starting at Shea, where he is 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA in six outings since May 30. He is 22-12 with a 3.46 ERA in 44 career starts versus the Padres, but hasn't faced them since 2005. The under is 8-2 in Glavine's last 10 Thursday starts.

    Cold

Boof Bonser (Minnesota Twins) - It has been a long summer for Boof Bonser. The Twins starter has not won a game since June 10 and he will try to stop the bleeding tonight against the shell-shocked Orioles. The right-hander is 0-8 with a 5.65 ERA in 12 starts since his last victory against the Washington Nationals, but he is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in two career starts against Baltimore. Totals bettors should note that the under is 10-1-1 in Bonser's last 12 starts overall.

John Danks (Chicago White Sox) - Danks is hoping to end a personal four-game losing streak tonight against the favored Red Sox. The rookie left-hander has had a horrble month, losing all four starts while racking up a 7.91 ERA in the process. He has allowed 27 hits, including six home runs, over 19 1-3 innings during that span. Danks lost his only start against the Red Sox 11-2 at Boston on July 21, giving up four runs and seven hits in six innings.

Rick VandenHurk (Florida Marlins) - VandenHurk is 3-4 with a 7.36 ERA this season and has struggled badly in his last 13 starts. The Marlins rookie is 0-2 with a 9.69 ERA in his last three outings including 4-3 loss to San Francisco on Saturday night in which he allowed four runs and seven hits. The only thing going for Florida backers is the fact that the right-hander's last decent start was against the Cardinals on July 17 when he pitched five scoreless innings. The over is 4-0 in VandenHurk's last four road starts.

      Pittsburgh at Colorado
The Pirates are doing a good job of playing the spoiler in the NL Wild Card race. After taking the last two games against the Phillies, the Bucs have taken two of three against the Rockies, including last night's 11-2 romp. Colorado has now dropped five of its last seven and has been hurt by a lack of consistent offense as the Rockies have scored three runs or less in three of the last four games. With rookie Franklin Morales on the mound today, Colorado looks like a shaky favorite (-145) according to Dunkel, which has Pittsburgh favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Pittsburgh (+125). Here are all of today's games.

          Thursday, August 23

Minnesota Twins at Baltimore Orioles (+100, 9 ½)

The Texas Rangers teed off for 39 runs in a doubleheader against Baltimore, included an astronomical 30 runs in the first game. Eight different Oriole pitchers contributed to yesterday’s debacle.

“I’ve never seen 30. Thank God they don’t get two wins for one game,” O’s first baseman Kevin Millar told the Baltimore Sun.

The Orioles will be anxious to prove Wednesday’s results were a fluke but their bullpen is a bit gassed after tossing 224 pitches.

          Pick: Twins –109

San Diego Padres at New York Mets (-151, 8 ½)

Nagging injuries have bothered Carlos Beltran most of the season, but he’s batting .366 with six homers and 21 RBIs since coming off the disabled list on August 10.

The Mets were having a hard time picking up wins while Beltran was watching from the dugout but the Gold Glove center fielder knew he could help turn things around.

“I was just saying it’s different with me in the lineup than when I’m not in the lineup because I feel like I can help our team in a lot of different ways,” he told the Newark Star-Ledger. “Right now, I just feel like we’re playing good baseball and hopefully, as a team, we can keep doing what we’re doing right now.”

New York has won seven of its last 11 and more help is on the way. Starting catcher Paul Lo Duca is nearly ready to return from a hamstring setback and ace pitcher Pedro Martinez is only two minor-league starts away from rejoining the Mets’ starting rotation.

          Pick: Mets –151

Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies (-134, 11)

We’ve mentioned it here in Hot Lines and Jason Logan wrote a piece about it, but in case you haven't heard, the Pirates are hitting the baseball. Pittsburgh has scored 146 runs and knocked out 35 big flies in the month of August both tops in the majors.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” outfielder Xavier Nady told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “But it’s pretty nice.”

Yesterday was no different as the Bucs slugged six homers en route to an 11-2 victory over the Rockies.

We’ve obviously been swinging the bats well all month,” Pittsburgh manager Jim Tracy said. “Tonight, we might have taken it a notch above.”

          Pick: Pirates +126

                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007 (All times Eastern)
CD Chivas USA (9-6-3) at Los Angeles (3-8-5), 10 p.m.

Carson, CA - David Beckham played the entire match on the right flank for England in 2-1 loss in a friendly against Germany at Wembley Stadium in London Wednesday, showing no signs of exhaustion from travel or the 90 minutes he played in New York an Ocean away Saturday.

The next question will be, can he fly all the way back to California and contribute solid minutes when the Los Angeles Galaxy host CD Chivas USA in the third installment of the Super Clasico in a Major League Soccer fixture on Thursday night at The Home Depot Center.

"Only time will tell," Beckham said after the game in New York Saturday. "I have to see how (the ankle is tomorrow). It is swollen up at the moment but that was always going to happen. I'm traveling (Sunday) morning to London to meet up with the (English national) team. Hopefully I'll be playing some part of the game Wednesday and then Thursday morning I'll be flying back. I'll sleep hopefully all of the way on the plane, get some rest and then play some part of the Chivas game on Thursday night. I think it is important for me to get back and to be there. I'll definitely be at the game and hopefully play some part of the game."

That's a pretty crazy schedule for a player who has had just one training session with the Galaxy since joining the squad from La Liga's Real Madrid over a month ago because of a nagging ankle injury.

"I don't think he is coming back to quickly, the injury is fine," Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop said Saturday in New York. "If anybody knows or can understand about the schedule we just had or what we are sort of going through at the moment, I think it kind of showed tonight (in a loss). At times we just cannot maintain the type of pressure and the type of play that we would like to do for 90 minutes because of the schedule we just had. And its nobody's fault, but it is out there and we have to deal with it. I think David came through the game well. Whether he is ready to play and start the game Thursday for us against Chivas, I guess we'll see when he goes to the England squad. I guess we'll see how much he plays and how much he figures into what they are going to do against Germany on Wednesday."

The Galaxy will be desperate for points Thursday when they return home after gaining just one point on the four-game road trip they concluded with a 5-4 epic battle in front of 66,000 fans at Giants Stadium Saturday. Currently, they are 12 points out of the final playoff spot, although they have numerous games in hand.

To make the team's East Coast trip even more taxing, the Galaxy had a home match against D.C. United in the semifinal of the SuperLiga last week, forcing the team to fly across the country and then back to the East Coast for the New York fixture. The Galaxy won that game to earn trip to the final of the inaugural North American club championship against Mexican champion CF Pachuca on Aug. 29 at the Home Depot Center.

"Just at this point we are trying to pick up points in league games," Yallop said. "We might want to swap a couple of those results (in SuperLiga) if we had (the choice) for league points, but we are proud to be in the final of the SuperLiga representing MLS. We are going to try to win that game against Pachuca but our next game is important to hopefully kick start out season."

The Galaxy's other big-name player - Landon Donovan - could also suffer some jet lag after playing a friendly for the U.S. National Team Wednesday at Ullevi Stadium in Sweden, a 1-0 loss.

"The same with Landon," Yallop said. "Both of those guys want to come back and be part of our team (Thursday). It shows a lot about their determination and their will that they want to do that."

Chivas, on the other hand, played Saturday but had three weeks off before that game - a 2-0 win at Toronto - meaning they should be a more rested side for the L.A. derby. One player, defender Jonathan Bornstein, played for the U.S. National Team Wednesday, but he too should also be ready for Thursday's fixture.

Chivas are in pretty good shape, winning three of their last four while holding the next-to-last playoff spot, also with games in hand on the teams in front of them. They are the confident team heading into the Super Clasico, even though they are 0-1-1 in the other two meetings with the Galaxy this season.

"We need to keep our mentality right in training," Bornstein said. "The past couple of weeks we've been working really hard trying to instill this mentality in the team that any where we go we can win and we'll just take care of every team. So we've got to keep that up and within the next week before the Galaxy game we've got to prepare ourselves and get ready to play them in another good stadium with a big crowd."

After Thursday's derby, L.A. hits the road again, heading to Colorado for a Sunday fixture while Chivas hosts Real Salt lake the same day.

Preview: CD Chivas USA at Galaxy

The Los Angeles Galaxy hope David Beckham and Landon Donovan will have something left Thursday night when they return from Europe.

The star duo will try to help Los Angeles snap its season-high five-game winless streak against crosstown rival CD Chivas USA, a team it has dominated.

Beckham and Donovan are expected to play against Chivas after representing their respective national teams Wednesday. Beckham was used at right midfield in England's 2-1 loss to Germany at Wembley Stadium as he played the entire match, while Donovan played 64 minutes of the United States' 1-0 defeat at Sweden.

"In some capacity, I would think, he would get on the field if he feels OK," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said of Beckham. "He wants to be available and ready to go. Don't be surprised if he's starting; don't be surprised if he gets five minutes.

"He'll be traveling all night and turning up at 1 o'clock at LAX. If he can get a snooze before he comes to the stadium, that will be good. But I've done that trip a few times when I played for Canada, and it's not easy."

The Galaxy (3-8-5) hope Beckham and Donovan can help the team avoid its first six-game MLS win drought since a franchise-record 10-game winless streak from May 6-June 24, 2006.

Los Angeles might have a good chance to snap that string in the Super Classico meeting with Chivas USA (9-6-3). The Galaxy, 12 points out of a playoff spot, are 7-1-2 all-time against Chivas while outscoring it 18-6.

The teams played to a 1-all tie on May 20, as Donovan's second-half goal countered Maykel Galindo's.

Donovan has been key for Los Angeles in the all-time series, scoring three goals with five assists in six games against Chivas.

He'll look to add to those totals and help the Galaxy rebound after losing 5-4 at New York on Saturday in Beckham's highly anticipated first league start.

Beckham played the entire game, assisting on two goals and setting up another. The English midfielder's bothersome left ankle, which has limited his playing time since arriving from Real Madrid in July, appears to still be an issue. Beckham, though, was adamant about remaining on the field.

"I was surprised to actually play 90 minutes," Beckham said. "The manager and the coaching staff kept asking me if I wanted to come off. But I'm quite a stubborn person on and off the field."

If Beckham and Donovan, Los Angeles' leader with five goals and six assists in 13 games, are unable to start, the offensive responsibility could fall on Carlos Pavon and Edson Buddle at forward.

Pavon scored his first two MLS goals Saturday on assists from Beckham. Buddle has three goals in seven games since being acquired from Toronto on June 13.

With Beckham and Donovan making the intercontinental jaunt to join their teammates, Chivas is not expected to use left-sided defender Jonathan Bornstein after he started against Sweden. Instead, Chivas will likely use Orlando Perez in Bornstein's place as it tries to end a stretch of four consecutive road games with a third victory.

Chivas is coming off a 2-0 win at Toronto on Saturday. Galindo and Sacha Kljestan scored second-half goals to help the club rebound from a last-minute 3-2 defeat at Kansas City on July 29.

Chivas has never won consecutive road games since beginning MLS play in 2005, going 7-24-12 as the away team.
