    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Mark Teixeira has four homers in his last two games, as Braves crushed Cincinnati, stayed in Wild Card chase.

-- Prince Fielder is also hot, as Brewers got road trip off to a good start by pounding old friend Doug Davis, 9-0.

-- Tim Wakefield now has 9-0 career record at Tropicana; it helps that he gets to pitch against Rays, who saw only 77 pitches in seven innings, but it is still an impressive mark.

-- Raul Ibanez had two taters for red-hot Mariners, who hit young prospect Garza hard; Seattle is strong right now.

-- As much as ESPN harped on the Michael Vick issue on tonight's telecast, what about next Monday, when they're in Atlanta on the day Vick pleads guilty? It'll be like Court TV.

-- How exactly did Tony Kornheiser get hired to do these games on TV? He is there to be "the next Cosell" but no one like the first Cosell, why would we want another one?

Tuesday's List of 13: Top 16 fantasy quarterbacks.........

Remember, this list is for fantasy leagues, not real football; if it were real football, obviously, Tom Brady would be higher.

      16) Vince Young, Titans-- Media likes to rip him, but this guy can play; last year, as rookie, passed for 2,199 yards, ran for 552 more, and had 12 TDs passing, seven running. Off to bad start this summer, getting suspended, then playing lousy at New England, but wouldn't bet against him when it counts.

      15) Brett Favre, Packers-- Is nearing end of trail, plays in poor weather late in season, but can still fling it around when he is protected. Had four games last year of 285+ yards, but also is guilty of putting it up for grabs, with 47 INTs last two years.

      14) Jay Cutler, Broncos-- Couldn't get Vanderbilt to bowl, but was decent in his five starts last year. Have to trust Shanahan to develop him, much like he helped Elway early in his career as Bronco. Plays in tough division though; they dumped the Snake for this guy-- he better be good.

      13) Tony Romo, Cowboys-- Kind of unknown; was better last year earlier in season, faded down stretch. He has good WRs but they're not getting any younger. Also has new offensive coordinator calling plays, but would think that will open up passing game more for him.

      12) Trent Green, Dolphins-- 37 years old, first became a star in Washington, playing under offensive coordinator Cameron, so he should have comeback season after missing half of '06 after terrible concussion. In '05-'06, threw for 8,605 yards, and 44 TDs; anything close to that would be great.

      11) Matt Hasselbeck, Seahawks-- Like Rivers, plays on good team with one of best RBs, so his numbers won't be as high as they could, but he plays for great playcaller in Holmgren, and has veteran experience. Has only one 300-yard passing game in last two seasons, a little alarming.

      10) Philip Rivers, Chargers- Has lot of weapons, great weather to play in, one of best offensive coaches in Turner, but with Mr Tomlinson on side, his TD numbers won't be as high, and with Chargers usually ahead, his yardage numbers won't be as high as they could be.

      9) Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers-- Threw 23 INTs last year; in first two years combined, threw 20 in 26 games. Has to stay off the motorcycle; one good sign is that Steelers threw long bomb on first play of preseason, indication that Tomlin might let Steelers throw it around more than Cowher did.

      8) Donovan McNabb, Eagles-- Think he's going to have great year, although he better stay healthy, which he hasn't done a lot of lately, missing 13 games in last two seasons. Has 40 TD passes of 40+ yards over his last 34 games, pretty good.

      7) Matt Schaub, Texans-- Getting chance to prove what he is capable of with trade to Houston, although he'd be running show in Atlanta, had Vick mess been uncovered earlier in the offseason. This is really speculation, but he's looked really good in some spot duty he's had in relief of Vick.

      6) Tom Brady, Patriots-- Addition of new receivers will make Patriots more diverse on offense, but figure Maroney still is going to get carries near goal line. Has 78 TD passes, 11,332 passing yards over last three years, but only nine games with 300+ passing yards, since they're not behind very much.

      5) Marc Bulger, Rams-- Best thing about Linehan taking over for Martz was that Bulger could audible, they protected better and Bulger played every game, where he had missed 10 tilts over previous two seasons. Adding Bennett, McMichael will make Bulger a better red zone passer, previously a weakness.

      4) Drew Brees, Saints-- Passed for 4,418 yards in magical 2006 season; has 77 TD passes over last three years, and missed only one game. Passed for 300+ yards in eight of 16 Saint tilts last season, and playing home games in a dome doesn't hurt.

      3) Carson Palmer, Bengals-- Has 60 TD passes last two years, with 7,871 passing yards; Bengal OL has suffered some hits in offseason, so we'll see if they can maintain high level, but I think they will, but he did fumble fifteen times last year.

      2) Jon Kitna, Lions-- Roll your eyes if you will, but there is a guy on nfl.com who predicts Kitna will be first QB to pass for 5,000 yards in a season. Kitna has keys to Martz Madness, and that means lot of explosive plays, TDs and turnovers.

      1) Peyton Manning, Colts-- Don't have to be Columbo to get this one right; over last three years, has 108 TD passes, and 16 300+-yard passing games. Plays in dome, has receivers all over the place. One red flag would be Colts have new guy at left tackle-- if he holds up, will be more of same this season.

Jenks gave up a single to Joey Gathright to lead off the ninth and responded by retiring the next three batters for his 34th save. The White Sox avoided losing nine in a row for the first time since August 1991.

        SPEAKING

''The date was wrong and everything was spelled differently. I was kind of looking at it like 'Jeez, Louise. Wow.' I looked behind me and everyone was laughing at me. Livan Hernandez (Arizona Diamondbacks) - As good as the Diamondbacks have been playing they have not done so well against the Milwaukee Brewers. The D-Backs have dropped five of their last six games against the Brew Crew and need a strong pitching performance tonight. They will give the ball to Livan Hernandez who is trying to win four starts in a row for the first time since the end of May. The Brewers would be wise to get to the veteran right-hander early because in his last few starts he has gotten better as the game has gone along. Hernandez is 7-4 with a 3.51 ERA in his career against the Brewers. Total bettors should be aware that the over is 7-0-1 in Hernandez's last eight home starts.

Javier Vazquez (Chicago White Sox) - Vazquez is 4-1 with a 2.66 ERA and two complete games in his last five starts at home, holding opponents to a .208 batting average. You would think that facing a Royals lineup which has scored a total of four runs in two straight losses would be great news for ChiSox backers, but Vazquez has struggled against the Royals, going 2-5 with a 4.81 ERA in 12 starts. The under is 13-3-1 in the right-hander's last 17 home starts this season.

              Cold

Jarrod Washburn (Seattle Mariners) - Washburn is 0-4 with a 5.23 ERA in his last seven starts since his last victory on July 4. The decline in his numbers during the second half of the season is not new for Mariners backers. The left-hander is 32-40 with a 4.30 ERA in his career after the All-Star break as opposed to the first half, where he is 59-41 with a 3.88 ERA. Washburn has never lost five decisions in a row in one season but considering he has lost his last three starts against the Twins, it could change tonight. The under is 4-1 in Washburn's last five starts overall.

Brett Tomko (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Tomko seeks his first win since beating San Francisco on July 15. He's 0-3 with a 5.14 ERA in his last five starts, and gave up five runs and six hits in a 7-4 loss to Houston on Tuesday. Phillies slugger Ryan Howard is 4-for-5 with a home run in his career against Tomko while Jimmy Rollins is batting .538 lifetime against the Dodgers starter. Tomko is 5-4 with a 5.21 ERA in 14 career games against Philadelphia and the under is 6-0 in the right-hander's last six road starts.

                Cleveland at Detroit
The Tigers are looking to cut into Cleveland's 1 1/2-game lead as the teams open up a three-game set at Comerica tonight. But after losing three straight to the Yankees over the weekend by the combined score of 20-6, the Tigers are forced to open with rookie Jair Jurrjens on the mound. Jurrjens will be making only his second MLB start and will have to go up against Fausto Carmona, who has won both his career starts against Detroit, including a two-run, 10-K performance in a 5-2 win last Wednesday. The pitching matchup favors the Tribe here and makes the Indians a good pick (-133) according to Dunkel, which has Cleveland favored by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (-133). Here are all of today's games.

                    Tuesday, August 21

Oakland Athletics at Toronto Blue Jays (-104, 8)

Looking for a reason why this has been a down year for the A’s? Take a peek at the injury report. Oakland has nine players on the disabled list and has used the DL 21 times this season, one shy of the team record set in 1992.

The A’s have lost 955 games to player injuries – a club record. General manager Billy Beane must have a good long-distance plan because he’s had to make more telephone calls than a telemarketer.

Minor league infielder J.J. Furmaniak has been called up four different times this year. He was sent down five days ago but was told to pack his bags again after Travis Buck was put on the DL.

“I can’t complain,” Furmaniak told the San Francisco Chronicle. “If I get called to the big leagues, I’d fly to Ethiopia to play.”

                    Pick: Athletics +104

Atlanta Braves at Cincinnati Reds (+116, 10 ½)

Mark Teixeira spent his entire career in the American League before landing with the Braves at the trade deadline. The common-sense theory is a player normally needs time to adjust to a new league and its pitchers.

Teixeira must not have gotten the memo.

The first baseman has knocked out nine homers and driven in 25 runs in only 18 games with the Braves. Pretty decent numbers considering he had 13 big flies and 49 RBIs in his other 78 games with the Texas Rangers. He’s hit four homers in the last two days while fighting the flu.

“I didn’t even know he was sick yesterday and all night,” Braves starter Tim Hudson told the Atlanta Constitution-Journal after picking up the victory in yesterday’s 14-4 win over the Reds. “You couldn’t tell. He was unbelievable. He was a one-man wrecking crew. Maybe we should spit in his food every day, make him throw up every day.”

                    Pick: Braves –124

Florida Marlins at St. Louis Cardinals (-191, 9 ½)

Miguel Cabrera got into hot water when he showed up a half-hour late for yesterday’s game against the San Francisco Giants. The Marlins All-Star third baseman was taken out of the starting lineup because of his tardiness.

This isn’t a first-time offense for Cabrera. Former manager Jack McKeon benched Cabrera for one game in 2005 for the same offense.

“He understood and he was remorseful,” current Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez told the Miami Herald. “It’s over with. He was embarrassed, and we move forward.”

Cabrera pinch-hit in the eighth inning and drove in a run in his one at-bat. Looks like it’s water under the bridge between Gonzalez and the Marlins' version of Manny Ramirez, so expect Cabrera to swing for the fences again today.

                    Pick: Marlins +180
