      Hot Lines

      Monday, August, 20

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (-104, 9)

Baseball fans in New England are getting concerned with the New York Yankees only four games behind their beloved Red Sox in the AL East. Have no fear Boston fans, the Yankees travel to California to play the Los Angeles Angels while the Sox are blessed with a timely series against Tampa Bay.

Doug Mirabelli is on the disabled list, so Tim Wakefield will have to pitch without his regular catcher. Much has been written about the comfort level Wakefield and Mirabelli have, but Wakefield still had 3.20 earned run average in six starts last season before the Red Sox reacquired Mirabelli.

Wakefield is usually at his best when playing in a dome, particularly against the D-Rays. The knuckleball pitcher is 18-2 against Tampa Bay with a 2.83 ERA during his 15 years in the majors. Kevin Cash is expected to catch today for Boston.

      Pick: Red Sox –104

Texas Rangers at Baltimore Orioles (-155, 9 ½)

The O’s are still reeling after learning closer Chris Ray will not only miss the rest of this season but possibly all of next year as well. The relief staff has been a sore spot all year for Baltimore with an ugly 4.97 ERA.

Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail indicated he’ll look inward for a replacement. Maybe this is the incentive the bullpen needs to improve its level of play.

“I think we lost a great teammate and a good pitcher. It was a big loss in the bullpen,” reliever Danys Baez told the Baltimore Sun of Ray. “But we’ve got to take the job now and we’ve got to see what we can do to correct that spot. I don’t know what’s going to happen next year. The management is going to say what they’re going to do. I don’t want to be thinking those kinds of things right now. I’m going to do whatever they want me to do.”

Baez is the most likely replacement as the ninth-inning man. He has already collected 113 career saves, which is more than any other pitcher in Baltimore’s bullpen.

      Pick: Orioles –155

Washington Nationals at Houston Astros (-130, 9)

Houston is no offensive juggernaut, but how ugly would its lineup be without slugger Carlos Lee? The cleanup hitter is batting .301 with 24 homers and 97 RBIs (second best in the National League). He sat out yesterday because of a hip flexor injury and his status for today’s game is questionable.

“I’m going to give it a shot,” Lee told the Houston Chronicle. “I’m going to get treatment and go out and run. I can swing. It doesn’t bother me to swing at all. I don’t want to be there if I’m not close to 100 percent. You put the team in position where they’re playing short. I’ll do my best for (today) and hopefully I’ll feel good.”

Lee was used as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning yesterday but he’ll probably sit out again today. The left fielder had started in every Astros game this year, so expect manager Phil Garner to give Lee another day off.

      Pick: Nationals +122
