    HOT

Roy Oswalt (Houston Astros) - Sporting greats Lou Gehrig, Brett Favre, Joe Dumars and Bobby Orr all had success wearing No. 4. If that's also your lucky number, you might want to change it to Oswalt's jersey number: 44. The Astros righty has won each of his last five outings, allowing one run or less in each of those appearances. Houston is listed as a -126 favorite in San Diego and the total is set at 7 1/2 runs.

    COLD

Rick Vanden Hurk (Florida Marlins) - The Fish lost the rookie's first three career starts in April. Then the team went 4-1 in his next five appearances from June 5-July 22. Now it seems Vanden Hurk's early season struggles have returned. Florida is 0-4 in his last four outings and has allowed 18 runs in just under 17 innings in that span. The Marlins host the Giants as +114 underdogs tonight.

Boof Bonser (Minnesota Twins) - The Twins are winless in the righty's last four appearances. They've been outscored 10-26 during the streak. What comes as a surprise is that under bettors have cashed in during each of Bonser's last three starts and the over/under is 1-8 in his last nine outings overall. Minnesota is listed as -145 favorites against the Rangers and the total is set at 9 runs.

Chad Billingsley (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Things haven't been going well for Billingsley since he turned 23 on July 29. He suffered a defeat on his birthday to the same Rockies team he'll face tonight, and followed that loss with three more in as many starts. He has an ERA just above 4.00 in his last four appearances but his team was shutout out twice and has scored just one run total during his last three outings. The Dodgers are listed as -152 favorites against Colorado's Franklin Morales, scheduled to make his big league debut.

      Houston at San Diego
Even with Jake Peavy on the mound last night, the Padres could not generate enough offense against Woody Williams to avoid a 3-1 loss. With an MLB-worst team batting average of .243, San Diego doesn't look to have much more luck against Roy Oswalt today. Oswalt has been lights out recently with a 5-0 record and 0.82 ERA over his last five starts. His numbers against the Pads aren't too shabby either (7-1, 2.26 in eight career starts; 3-0, 1.77 in three starts at SD). Houston looks like a good pick (-124) according to Dunkel, which has the Astros favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Houston (-124). Here are all of today's games.

                    NFL
                    Saturday’s NFL starter report

Houston Texans at Arizona Cardinals (-3, 35 ½)

Houston’s starters will play between 20-30 plays followed by the second-stringers, who’ll play until the end of the third quarter. Quarterback Jared Zabransky will lead the third team in the fourth quarter.

Elpasotimes.com reports that injuries will keep fullback Jameel Cook, defensive end Anthony Weaver and offensive tackle Charles Spencer from making the trip to Arizona.

Cardinals QB Matt Leinart and the rest of Arizona’s first stringers will play well into the second quarter, with Kurt Warner and the backups coming on for a few series at the end of the first half.

                    Detroit Lions at Cleveland Browns (-2 ½, 35 ½)
The Lions' rookie wide receiver Calvin Johnson will make his first pro start tonight, according to the Detroit News. Johnson caught two passes for 45 yards coming off the bench in last weekend’s preseason victory over Cincinnati.

Starting receivers Roy Williams and Mike Furrey have been ruled out of the game because of injury. Quarterback Jon Kitna will play a large portion of the first half, with J.T. O'Sullivan in line as the first replacement.

Cleveland starters should play at least the first half, but coach Romeo Crennel will wait until just before the game to tap either Charlie Frye or Derek Anderson as the starting quarterback.

"I think it’s important for a guy to act on his feet and react," Crennel told reporters. "Sometimes, if you know ahead of time, you’ve got an edge. I want to see how they handle it."

First-round pick Brady Quinn is expected to make his first NFL appearance in the second half.

                    New Orleans Saints at Cincinnati Bengals (- 3 ½, 38 ½)

Sean Payton’s first-stringers will play the majority of the first half, excluding Drew Brees, who will work in the first quarter and then step aside for Jamie Martin to lead the Saints to halftime.

Recently signed QB Matt Baker will make his NFL debut tonight, entering sometime in the third quarter to finish out the game. Baker is competing with Tyler Palko and Jason Fife for the third quarterback position this season.

The Bengals' starting offense is likely to be on the field longer than it was last weekend against Detroit, with quarterback Carson Palmer set to play most of the first half. Second-string QB Doug Johnson will come in next, but head coach Marvin Lewis expects him to play fewer snaps than the two quarters he worked in the last game.

With tailback Kenny Irons set to miss the entire season, Cincinnati will use tonight’s game to look at potential replacements – second-year player Quincy Wilson will likely get the start.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Jacksonville Jaguars (-4 ½, 34 ½)

Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia played just two series in the preseason opener against the Pats, and while he is likely to see more action tonight, coach Jon Gruden says he is eager to see backups Luke McCown, Bruce Gradkowski and Chris Simms.

Tampa Bay’s offensive line will feature some young talent – rookie left guard Arron Sears and two second-year pros, right guard Davin Joseph and right tackle Jeremy Trueblood will start.

The Jaguars first-string offense played just three series last week against Miami, but coach Jack Del Rio says they will likely play the full first half tonight.

Jacksonville may have to manage with just two quarterbacks, as both contenders for the No. 3 spot, Tim Couch and Lester Ricard, missed practices this week through injury.

Denver Broncos at Dallas Cowboys (-5, 36 ½)

The Broncos and Cowboys spent this week practicing with and scrimmaging against each other, so there will be few surprises for the players when they meet in tonight’s preseason game.

Both teams are expected to play their starters for at least a half, with reports in the Dallas Morning News saying that Dallas may play some starters into the third quarter.

The big battle in tonight’s game will be between two young quarterbacks. Tony Romo will start for the Cowboys, with Jay Cutler expected to line up for the Broncos. Both will play about a half in what should be a fascinating showdown.

Denver has some injury problems: wide receiver Javon Walker, left tackle Matt Lepsis and right tackle Adam Meadows will all miss the game.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Washington Redskins (2, 33 ½)

Pittsburgh's starters were largely reduced to spectators during the first two preseason games. That’s going to change tonight with coach Mike Tomlin saying they'll play more against the Washington Redskins.

Tomlin has yet to announce his starting lineup, but the latest reports suggest that Bryant McFadden will feature at cornerback with Ike Taylor, while Santonio Holmes and Cedrick Wilson will be the two wide receivers.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who played just two series last weekend, asked the coach for more playing time this week and is likely to get at least a quarter.

Redskins coach Joe Gibbs played most of his offensive starters for a full half last week against the Titans and is expected to do roughly the same in tonight’s game.

Washington is said to be eager to see more of third-year QB Jason Campbell and they will also give time to Mike Pucillo at left guard after the offensive line gave up three sacks last week.

Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers (-3, 35 ½)

Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck wants to play in today’s preseason game against the Packers, but is unlikely to do so. After discussions with head coach Mike Holmgren, it was decided that it wasn’t worth risking further injury to his surgically repaired non-throwing shoulder.

"If I can keep him from getting banged around, it's to our advantage. The best way to do that is to not let him play," Holmgren told the San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday.

Holmgren added that Shaun Alexander, Marcus Pollard, Deion Branch and several other starters on offense will play through the first quarter, but not past that.

Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre failed to gain a single first down in four series at Pittsburgh in his last time out, saying it was as frustrated as he has ever been in a preseason game.

Coach Mike McCarthy said that the first-string players would play about 30 plays on Saturday, with the backups playing into the fourth quarter.

San Diego Chargers at St. Louis Rams (2 ½, 38)

San Diego head coach Norv Turner expects to give his starters the full first half tonight against the Rams, hoping that they will be able to put the sloppiness of a 24-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last week behind them.

But he will be without running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who doesn't play in the preseason, and linebacker Matt Wilhelm, who is struggling with a strained calf.

Meanwhile, veteran wide receiver Dante Hall makes his first start for the Rams tonight after missing the preseason opener with a hamstring injury. He is scheduled to play the first half at most.

Another veteran, defensive tackle La'Roi Glover, will also make his debut for the team. He missed the first game with a hip flexor injury but practiced on Thursday and Friday, and will play a quarter. All other starters are likely to play into the second quarter.

                    Oakland Raiders at San Francisco 49ers (-3 ½, 36 ½)

Raiders coach Lane Kiffin was impressed with what QB Andrew Walter showed with the second-string last week and tonight he’s going to give Walter a chance with the starters. Daunte Culpepper will follow, with Josh McCown set to play last.

Running back Dominic Rhodes will get another start and LaMont Jordan will play as much as possible after sitting out last week’s game with a sore back.

San Francisco coach Mike Nolan says the starters will get around 24 snaps against the Raiders, so they could play into the second quarter. He also confirmed that the second-string will play until the end of the third.

Rookie tackle Joe Staley will rotate in for one series for Kwame Harris, despite the fact that he suffered a broken right thumb during practice and is wearing a small cast. David Beas will also rotate for at least one series with right guard Justin Smiley.
