      Streaking Pitchers

      Friday, August 17

HOT (The weather is steamy in Los Angeles, Arizona, and San Diego and the following starters are definitely following that trend at the moment.)

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels) - Those betting against this righty lately are lacking cash. The AL West leading Angels are 4-0 in his last four trips to the hill and he has pitched into the seventh inning in his last three appearances. The Angels are listed as +180 underdogs in the night cap of their doubleheader with the Red Sox.

Brandon Webb (Arizona Diamondbacks) - The reining NL Cy Young Award winner has opposing batters trapped in his Webb of outs, just like Peter Parker's alter ego Spider-Man catches criminals. The righty is coming off back-to-back complete-game shutouts and he hasn't allowed a run in any of his last four starts. D-backs and under bettors cash out each time in that span. Arizona heads into Atlanta as -145 favorites and the total is set at 8 1/2 runs.

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) - Peavy has won his last four outings and he has allowed three runs total during the streak. San Diego has outscored its opponents 34-8 during those starts and over bettors have cashed in during all but one of those appearances. The Padres are -208 home favorites against the Astros tonight.

COLD (It dosen't matter if you live on the north or south side of Chicago, these starters are freezing backers profits.)

Rich Hill (Chicago Cubs) - The former Michigan Wolverine has four no-decisions in his last five outings and the Cubs record in that span is 1-4. He has only surrendered more than four runs once in those outings, but his team has scored no more than five runs in all of those contests. The Cubbies host their rivals from the Show-Me State as -124 favorites.

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - Contreras earned a win nine days ago, but it wasn't in a starting role. The righty earned a victory in one of his two relief appearances for the ChiSox after getting demoted for losing seven straight starts. From June 24-July 31 his ERA was 10.00 as a member of the rotation. Chicago is a +155 underdog against the AL Wild Card leading Mariners.

          Hot Lines

          Friday, August 17

Kansas City Royals at Oakland Athletics (-115, 8 ½)

The Oakland A’s can match a season-high fifth straight victory tonight when they open a three-game homestand against the Royals. The Athletics are within two games of .500 for the first time in a month and are eight games behind the Mariners in the wild-card race.

Oakland has had a solid start to August, winning 10 of 15 games largely due to some hot hitting. The A’s averaged 5.9 runs in each of their last 11 games and are second to the Yankees in the AL this month with 87 runs scored.

The Athletics face the Royals’ Brian Bannister (8-7, 3.41) on Friday, but he is coming off a poor start against Toronto last weekend. Oakland’s sluggers will take advantage.

          Pick: Athletics –115

Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates (-125, 9)

The Phillies battled to a series victory over the Washington Nationals this week but did it without much help from their struggling offense. They tallied just nine runs against the Nats after scoring 15 in the preceding series against the Braves.

As The Associated Press reports today, the 3-4-5 batters in the Phillies lineup are all slumping. Pat Burrell has managed just one hit in 13 at-bats, Ryan Howard is in a 3-for-22 patch and Aaron Rowand has just one RBI in seven games.

Hitters of that quality are unlikely to stay cold for long, but their problems are likely to continue in Friday’s series opener against the Pirates. That’s because Pittsburgh ace Tom Gorzelanny (11-6, 3.29 ERA) is on the mound for the home team. Gorzelanny comes into this start on the back of his first career complete game – a 5-0 win over the Giants last weekend.

          Pick: Pirates –125

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (-124)

St. Louis – the defending World Series champions – has won eight of its last 10 games to close the gap at the top of the NL Central from eight games on August 5 to just 2 ½ ahead of today’s action. They can potentially take the lead this weekend as they face the Chicago Cubs in a three-game series.

The Cards have performed well in big games of late. They swept the division-leading Brewers this week. St. Louis is generating some serious offense during its current five-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 46-10.

They will look to Albert Pujols to lead them to a win in the series opener against the Cubs today. He has slammed three homers and nine RBIs against Chicago this season and will be hoping to rough up starter Rich Hill (6-7, 3.85), who takes the mound after a bad start last Saturday.

          Pick: Cardinals +116

                  Friday's NFL starter report

Atlanta Falcons at Buffalo Bills (-3, 34)

Atlanta head coach Bobby Petrino may be forced to start rookie running back Jason Snelling, who went for 48 yards on 10 carries last week, if Jerious Norwood’s lower stomach infection doesn’t subside.

“(Norwood) woke up this morning with stomach cramps,” Petrino told reporters Tuesday. “He’s going to be fine. He got a little dehydrated (Monday) and had some effects from that. He should be OK."

Warrick Dunn is back practicing with the team following off-season back surgery, but isn’t expected to play until next week. The rest of the first-stringers are expected to play into the second quarter. There’s been no word regarding the quarterback rotation after Joey Harrington checks out.

Buffalo's Dick Jauron is being typically tight-lipped about his starters’ playing time though it’s almost a given that running back Marshawn Lynch will be in more than the handful of snaps he took last week. QB J.P. Losman will likely work at least the first quarter.

Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles (-3, 35)

Donovan McNabb makes his first start since tearing his right ACL last year and should lead a few series before giving way to A.J. Feeley and Kelly Holcomb.

"He's had an awfully good camp, so I would expect him to play well," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg told reporters of McNabb. "He's moving around very well. There were only one or two occasions in training camp where I thought his legs were going a little bit, just like everyone else's. Other than those couple of occasions, I didn't see anything that reminded me that he's coming off major knee surgery."

Carolina expects to give its starters up to a full half of action.

Tennessee Titans at New England Patriots (-5 ½, 35)

Vince Young sat out last week’s 14-6 loss to Washington for leaving Titans camp to sleep at home the night before the game, so expect him to start and stay in for at least a quarter against the Pats. LenDale White, slowly working off the 10 pounds he put on in the off-season, may be unable to go with a bum ankle. If he’s out, Chris Brown and Chris Henry will take most of the carries.

New England's Tom Brady is only expected to take a few snaps before giving way to Matt Cassel and then Matt Gutierrez. Randy Moss (hamstring) and Laurence Maroney (shoulder) are both expected to sit out.

Minnesota Vikings at New York Jets (-4, 35)

Each of Minnesota’s four quarterbacks will play a quarter tonight, with Tarvaris Jackson starting, followed by Brooks Bollinger, Drew Henson and Tyler Thigpen.

The rest of the Vikings starters are expected to play the first half.

Jets head coach Eric Mangini wouldn’t disclose how long his starters will be in the game, but it’s expected they’ll play into the second quarter. Quarterback Chad Pennington took 10 snaps in last week’s 31-16 win over Atlanta, but didn’t attempt a pass. He’ll get a chance to throw the ball a bit tonight.
