    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Terribly bitter loss for Devil Rays, who led 1-0 until ninth at Fenway, before closer Reyes imploded and Boston won 2-1, getting tying Lowell homer and Crisp's game-winning hit to right. The kind of game playoff teams win.

-- Phillies got huge pinch-hit homer from the well-traveled Russell Branyan in 8th inning as they came from behind to beat Nationals; Branyan is already on his third team in '07.
Phillies got one hit in first six innings, still won, as did the Braves, who got shut out for 4.1 innings by reliever Correia who was an emergency starter for Giants.

-- Orlando Hernandez threw 130 pitches in just six innings for Mets, who have Mike DeFelice as their starting catcher right now. They also didn't play Green vs a righty starter.

-- Arizona is in first place, but their trip to southeast got off to ominous start, as they trailed Florida 14-1 in 4th inning.

-- A's have used 48 players this season, and Dan Meyer is going to make it 49 very soon, which would tie a franchise record set in '97. If you use 49 guys, you've had a bad year.

-- Hard to believe, but first-place Milwaukee has lost Chris Capuano's last 15 starts; he is 0-10, 6.67 during that span.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) I don't want to hear one word from Bronx Bombers fans in praise of Joe Torre, now that he has Bombers rolling towards the playoffs again (and hopefully, their seventh failure in row in those playoffs). I don't know one Bronx fan who supported Torre back in the spring; even the Bronx fans I know who are Italian wanted him fired.

      12) If a guy coached one of my favorite teams to four titles, it would give him a lifetime pass, in my eyes, to coach as long as he wanted. Then again, I'm not a frontrunner like most New York fans. So hold your praise, people, it don't mean a thing.

      11) ESPN legal expert Roger Cossack says that Michael Vick is looking at a year in jail, even if he pleads guilty; if he were to go to trial and lose, Cossack estimates he'll get anywhere from 18 months to three years behind bars.

      10) Lets say Vick pleads guilty, goes to jail for a year, gets a few months off that for good behavior, and is out of jail next June 1. The Falcons won't want him, but who will? You know someone will take a chance on him.

      9) Saw a magazine in bookstore this week that is called Bark magazine. Apparently, it isn't as great as Bite magazine. All of this reminds me that no NFL teams have mascots in the dog family, and I'm not sure why. Lot of animal mascots, but none in the dog family. How about the Toronto Terriers, if the NFL expands north of the border?

      8) Mel Kiper's #4 prospect for next spring's NFL Draft is Sam Baker, a tackle from USC, who is the son of Arena Football's commissioner, David Baker.

      7) Early nomineee for Catch of the Year in baseball, given the context of the game, goes to Detroit's Curtis Granderson, who made diving backhand catch with two on, two out in bottom of 8th inning with game tied 2-2. Tigers later won in 10, so the catch by Granderson definitely saved a pivotal game.

      6) In front row at Met-Pirate game Tuesday; the great Arnold Palmer, who doesn't waste time or energy making commercials reminding people how great he used to be. Classy guy.

      5) The third base coaches for both Toronto, Houston stand way too close to home plate when they have runner at 2nd base-- almost halfway to home plate. After the coach died in minor leagues last month, getting hit with line drive, the rule about a coach staying in coaches' box should be enforced.

      4) The A's are having dreadful season, but that shouldn't take away from fact that Marco Scutaro is a good baseball player; he plays all over field, catches the ball, and is a good hitter in the clutch. Winning teams need guys like him.

      3) 2008 has already started for a few teams; Tuesday night in Oakland, the A's started Suzuki (C), Murphy (ss), Hannahan (3b), none of whom were close to big leagues when '07 began. Andrew Brown, the reliever they got for Milton Bradley, has been stellar as a set-up man.

      2) I am due for a new cellphone this fall, so I went to Verizon to price one that is better with text messaging. The guy at the counter tells me this: if I buy the phone I want now, it costs me about $390-- if I wait until September 21, same exact phone will cost $50. Now, I'm not the brightest guy in America, but as impatient as I am, I'll still wait five weeks for the phone.

      1) Amazing fact of the day, at least for me; the last time there was a bowl game between an SEC team and Pac-10 squad was 1989, when Washington drilled Florida 34-7 in Anaheim, at a now-defunct game called the Freedom Bowl. These are best college football leagues in country; they need a bowl tie-in.

            Wednesday’s MLB betting notes

            Phillies bullpen showing brotherly love

All the pieces of the puzzle seem to be falling in place for the Philadelphia Phillies, now only three games behind the New York Mets in the NL East.

Philly’s bullpen, which has been the team’s biggest burden this season, is finally showing signs of life. Over the past 24 games, in which the Phillies are 15-9, the bullpen has only conceded an ERA of 2.20.

"People might doubt the arms we have in the bullpen," reliever J.C. Romero told the Philadelphia Inquirer, "but we're confident because we know what it takes to close games. It might not come as easy as it used to, but we know how to get it done. And right now, this is where you separate the boys from the men. ... Because these are the games right now that get you into the playoffs."

This turnaround isn’t the only good news in Philadelphia. The team received word on second baseman Chase Utley’s recovery. The All-Star was approved to begin soft toss this week and should return to the lineup ahead of schedule.

Utley has been on the disabled list since he suffered a broken hand when he was hit by a pitch on July 26. He's hitting .336 this season with 17 home runs and 82 RBIs.

            Coco a no-go

Boston Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp has missed the past two games due to what team doctors are calling a viral infection. He is now listed as questionable heading into Tuesday’s game with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

“It’s hard to explain, but my legs are so sore that it’s hard to stretch without it hurting,” Crisp told the Boston Herald. “It’s not an injury. I’m just sick. If I wasn’t sick, I wouldn’t need any time off. I can play. Anybody who’s sick can go out and play. I’m not going to go out there and die.”

Last week, Crisp was clipped by an ATV driven by the Seattle Mariners mascot during the Red Sox’s trip to Seattle but both he and manager Terry Francona told reporters that incident has nothing to do with the recent time he’s missed.

Crisp is hitting .337 over the past 48 games but has recently hit a bit of a slump. He has five home runs, 43 RBIs and 21 stolen bases on the season. More importantly, he provides Boston will a solid bat against left-handed pitchers (.270 this year).

            Red Alert

Chalk this one up to bad timing. Cincinnati Reds starting catcher David Ross hit the disabled list this week due to a concussion. This injury came just two days after the team traded backup catcher Chad Moeller to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

This string of events have the Reds in a pinch, forcing the team to bring up Triple-A catcher Ryan Jorgensen, who hasn’t played in the bigs since 2005 when he was a member of the Florida Marlins. Jorgensen was hitting .229 in the minor leagues with two home runs and 26 RBIs.

Ross, who was injured when he collided with the San Diego Padres outfielder Mike Cameron last Sunday, was hitting .207 with 15 home runs and 33 RBIs.

            Dodgers give OK to Shea

The Los Angeles Dodgers continued to stack their roster for a postseason push this week when they added former All-Star Shea Hillenbrand to the big league club.

Hillenbrand, who began the season with the Los Angeles Angels, hit .254 with three home runs in 53 games with the Halos. The Dodgers are now the fifth different team for the well-known clubhouse cancer in the last two seasons.

Hopefully for L.A., Hillenbrand kept his mouth shut for manger Grady Little’s closed-door meeting this past Monday night. Little felt it was time to address the troops after Los Angeles dropped three in a row and seven of its last 10 games.

"They believe they can get it done, and we have plenty of time, but we can't have everybody trying to be that guy," Little told MLB.com following the meeting. "We needed to talk about some things and see if we can get it going."

The addition of Hillenbrand will hopefully spark a Dodgers offense that has been outscored 44-18 during this current slump. Los Angeles has scored one or fewer runs in six of those losses.

-Roy Halladay, Blue Jays, pitched his major league-leading fifth complete game in a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

-Aubrey Huff, Orioles, drove in five runs in a 12-0 rout of the New York Yankees.

-Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp, Red Sox. Lowell hit game-tying homer in the ninth inning and Crisp singled in the winning run three batters later to push Boston past Tampa Bay 2-1.

-Chipper Jones, Braves, hit a game-winning double in the ninth inning to lift Atlanta over San Francisco, 5-4.

-Jack Cust, Athletics, hit a pair of solo homers to help Oakland edge the Chicago White Sox 4-3.

              FAREWELL TO PHIL

Hall of Fame shortstop Phil Rizzuto died Monday night. Known as ''The Scooter,'' Rizzuto was at 89 the oldest living Hall of Famer. He played for the New York Yankees throughout the 1940s and '50s, won seven World Series titles, was an AL MVP and played in five All-Star games. Rizzuto later announced Yankees games for four decades. The Yankees will wear his No. 10 on their left sleeves for the rest of the season.

              RECORD-BREAKER

Bobby Cox set a dubious record in the Atlanta Braves' 5-4 victory over San Francisco on Tuesday. Atlanta's cantankerous manager was tossed after the fifth for arguing a called third strike - the 132nd ejection of his career to break the mark originally set by Hall of Famer John McGraw.

              CENTRAL SHOWDOWNS

After a sluggish start relegated them to fifth place in the NL Central by mid-May, the St. Louis Cardinals have climbed their way back into the division race. With Tuesday's 12-4 victory over Milwaukee, the reigning World Series champions trail the Brewers by 4 1/2 games. ... The staggering Detroit Tigers have the AL Central all to themselves - for at least one day. Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run homer in Detroit's four-run 10th inning as Detroit moved one game ahead of Cleveland in the up-for-grabs division with a 6-2 win over the Indians.

              STRUGGLING

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who led the NL West by 1 1/2 games on July 26, were defeated 7-4 by Houston on Tuesday and have lost 13 of 16 since then and trail first-place Arizona by 6 1/2 games. Now in fourth place, their postseason chances took another hit before the game when third baseman Nomar Garciaparra was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

              SNAPPED

Melky Cabrera went 0-for-3 with two walks, ending his career-best 18-game hitting streak in the New York Yankees' 12-0 loss to Baltimore on Tuesday. ... Dontrelle Willis earned his first win since May 29, striking out 11 in seven innings and letting Florida's bats do the rest in a 14-5 victory over Arizona. Willis (8-12) had gone 0-7 over his past 13 starts. ... Minnesota routed Seattle 11-3 to snap a five-game losing streak.

              SPEAKING

''Those are our horses. They go out and perform like that, we have to get over the hill and get them some runs. We haven't been able to do that.'' - Tampa Bay designated hitter Jonny Gomes, on wasting six innings of four-hit ball from Scott Kazmir in a 2-1 loss to Boston on Tuesday. The Devil Rays also wasted a solid outing by James Shields on Monday and have scored two runs in their last 30 innings.

              SEASONS
              Aug. 15

1945 - The Chicago Cubs routed the Brooklyn Dodgers 20-6, at Ebbets Field. Paul Gillespie knocked in six runs with two home runs and a single to lead the attack.

1989 - Dave Dravecky of the San Francisco Giants, in his second start after coming back from cancer surgery on his pitching arm, broke his arm but earned the win in a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Expos. Dravecky entered the sixth inning with a three-hit shutout. He gave up a leadoff home run to Damaso Garcia and hit Andres Galarraga with a pitch. After throwing a wild pitch to Tim Raines, he collapsed to the ground and clutched his left arm in agony.

1990 - Philadelphia's Terry Mulholland pitched the record eighth no-hitter of the season as the Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants 6-0. The season's eighth no-hitter surpassed the modern record of seven set in 1908 and matched in 1917.

1990 - Mark McGwire hit a grand slam in the 10th inning to become the first major league player to hit 30 or more homers in his first four seasons and lifted the Oakland Athletics to a 6-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

2001 - Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 300th career save, completing a two-hitter that lifted the San Diego Padres over the New York Mets 2-1.

2005 - Randy Winn hit for the cycle in his first four at-bats in San Francisco's 7-3 win over Cincinnati.

2006 - Jose Reyes homered three times in the New York Mets' 11-4 loss to Philadelphia.

              Today's birthday: Oliver Perez 26.

                LA Angels at Toronto
The Angels ran into Doc Halladay at his best last night and were held to just five hits in a 4-1 loss. The L.A. bats should have another tough time getting going today as the Angels face Shaun Marcum, who has quietly been as effective as Halladay this season. Marcum is 4-0 with a 2.36 ERA in his last four outings and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Royals in his last appearance on Friday. With Toronto continuing to dominate at Rogers Centre (winners in 15 of last 19), the Blue Jays look like a good pick (-126) to make it back-to-back wins over the Halos according to Dunkel, which has Toronto favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Toronto (-126). Here are all of today's games.

                    Wednesday, August 15

Arizona Diamondbacks at Florida Marlins (-121, 9)

The Arizona Diamondbacks are the in-form team in the National League since the All-Star break, posting a 20-10 record that has seen them go from 3 ½ games back to two ahead in the West.

But the D-Backs have hit their first slump since the Midsummer Classic and tonight they are looking to avoid losing three consecutives games for the first time in almost a month. Back-to-back losses against Washington and Florida have allowed San Diego to close the gap and the pressure is on the D-Backs to respond.

That’s not an easy feat for Arizona considering they have lost 11 of their last 14 games in Miami, while the Marlins have won three straight games at home.

                    Pick: Florida -121

Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals (+103, 9)

The hot-hitting Phillies will chase their sixth victory in eight games when they take on the Nationals in game two of a three-game series tonight. In the first of the series Philadephia squeezed out a 3-2 win, on the back of a huge performance from a rookie batter.

Russell Branyan – who was batting just .197 with San Diego before joining the Phillies in July – hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth inning of his first appearance to lead his new team to a big win.

But clutch hitting is nothing new to a Philadeliphia outfit that leads the National League this season with a combined .276 average and 640 runs scored. Tonight they face Tim Redding (1-3, 2.86), who hasn’t received a decision in his last two home starts.

                    Pick: Philadelphia – 111

Chicago White Sox at Oakland Athletics (-112, 8 ½)

The Oakland Athletics seem to have finally shaken off a terrible run that saw them lose seven of nine games entering August. They have won their last two games, including last night’s 4-3 victory in the series opener against the White Sox.

The key to the A’s turnaround this month has been the bats. Oakland is second in the American League with 76 runs scored and 17 home runs so far this month. Only the red-hot Yankees have faired better.

For tonight’s game, the White Sox send Mark Buehrle (9-7, 3.34) to the mound looking to slow the A’s offense, but the Sox are 4-12 in his 16 starts against Oakland and he is coming off a bad start against Cleveland last week.

                    Pick: Oakland –112

                      Streaking Pitchers

                      Wednesday, August 15

                      HOT

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) – The major league leader in strikeouts is on a roll right now, going 8-0 over his last 10 starts with the O’s winning every game he’s started during the hot streak. Bedard is averaging almost eight strikeouts per start this year and has recorded double-digit Ks in six different outings. Bedard faces the New York Yankees as a +127 underdog tonight. The total is set at 9. It will be just the sixth time this season a total of nine runs or more has be set for a game Bedard has started. The under is 4-1-1 in those games.

Shaun Marcum (Toronto Blue Jays) – Marcum is proving he’s no flash in the pan as he continues to put up quality starts for the Jays. He’s won four straight and five of six including his last start when he carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He left that game after allowing just hit in his in 6 2/3 innings. He has allowed just three earned runs and only one home run over his last three outings. The Blue Jays host the AL West leading Angels tonight with oddsmakers setting Toronto at –131 and the total at 9 ½.

Tim Hudson (Atlanta Braves) – Atlanta’s veteran ace has been lights-out recently. He has gone 7-0 over his last nine trips to the hill with the Braves cashing in all nine times he’s started. Atlanta has played over the total eight straight games in which Hudson has started despite his 2.24 ERA during that stretch. The Braves will be gunning for their 10th straight victory tonight when they host the San Francisco Giants. Books have the Tribe priced as heavy –245 faves and the total set at 9.

                      COLD

Andy Sonnanstine (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) – Sonnanstine’s 1-8 record and 6.35 ERA pretty much tell the story, but to explain how bad he’s really been this season, here’s a few more details. He’s allowed at least three earned runs in every start except two this season – and hasn't left a single game with fewer than two run on the board. The D-Rays have just two victories in his thirteen total outings this year - all of which they’ve been significant underdogs. In his last two starts, he hasn’t made it out of the fourth inning and allowed a total of 13 earned runs. Tampa Bay is a heavy +240 underdog tonight against the Red Sox.

Gil Meche (Kansas City Chiefs) – Playing with the Royals is bad enough but Meche hasn’t been helping his cause lately. He’s riding a four-game losing streak heading into tonight’s contest with the Texas Rangers. During the stretch has sported an ugly 5.84 ERA and has failed to make it past the fifth inning in each of his last two trips to the mound. Don’t look for Meche to break out of his slump tonight as he hasn’t faired well against the Rangers in his career, posting a 4-7 record and a 7.09 ERA against them. Oddsmakers have Kansas City at –120.
