    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Richie Sexson hit second pitch of ninth inning over fence in left-center, as Mariners stayed hot, beating Twins 4-3.

-- Detroit just finished 8-game home stand vs A's and Rays with a dismal 4-4 record. Playoff teams do better than 4-4 vs two also-ran teams like that.

-- SEC football coaches are unanimous that moving kickoffs back to 30-yard line will be biggest rule change in decade in the college game. More strategy will be involved, and more starters will be covering kickoffs.

-- One of Nick Saban's administrative assistants went back to Louisiana for a wedding, and had her tires slashed; they take college football really seriously in the South. The date to remember is November 3, with LSU visiting Alabama.

-- When Dodgers moved to LA in late 50's, Dodgers were given 252 acres by city of Los Angeles; what do you think that land would be worth today?

-- When Dodgers acquired Mark Sweeney from Giants, it was rivals' first trade with each other since December 11 of 1985 (Alex Trevino for Candy Maldonado).

Tuesday's List of 13: Top 13 fantasy receivers in NFL

      13) Randy Moss, Patriots/Terrell Owens, Cowboys- Proceed at your own risk; these guys are risky business. Can't wait to see the first time Moss doesn't try on a block, see what they do in Foxboro. Owens is just insane; why would you want to be associated with him, even in fantasy ball?

      12) Vincent Jackson, Chargers-- Played very well in last four games in '06, steps into void left by McCardell's departure, and Bolts figure to throw it better with Norv Turner running the offense. As big as he is, should be terrific in red zone.

      11) Calvin Johnson, Lions-- This is probably too low, for a #2 guy in Martz Madness, but he's a rookie, might take him some time to get adjusted, but he was man amongst boys last year in college, and he played with a horrible QB. Like receivers in a dome late in season, and Lions play in a dome.

      10) TJ Houshmandzadeh, Bengals-- Wanted to leave him off list, because his name is too damn long, but Bengals have an explosive offense, and he is big part of it; has 16 TDs and 33 catches of 20+ yards, over last two seasons. Might be higher on list, but has played in only 25 of 32 games last two years.

      9) Deion Branch, Seahawks-- Takes over as #1 Seahawk WR with Jackson gone to 49ers, and thats an upgrade. Will have benefit of actually going through training camp this summer, when he didn't last year. Working with coach/QB combo who have been to Super Bowl; he figures to have a big season.

      8) Reggie Wayne, Colts-- Has 3,575 receiving yards over last three seasons, so even if Harrison/Clark/Addai get the scores Wayne is still putting up big numbers. Hasn't missed a start in last four seasons, and he plays in a dome, with #18.

      7) Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals-- Numbers were down last year, but everything was down in Arizona; this guy had 27 catches of 20+ yards in '05, with 10 TDs. Still not sold on Leinart as an NFL QB, but with Boldin/Fitzgerald combo on outside, he has some fun weapons to play with.

      6) Javon Walker, Broncos-- This one is little trickier, since he had teammate die in his arms after drive-by shooting last New Year's Eve; is said to be having great training camp, has really dedicated himself to football, but will Cutler be good enough to make him an elite player? Weather in Denver gets dicey in second half of season. Will be interesting to see if he can be successful in channeling his grief in a positive way.

      5) Andre Johnson, Texans-- Think Matt Schaub will make big difference for Houston, and if he does, you know #80 will be having a big season. last year, in Kubiak's first season with Texans, Johnson had five TDs and 15 catches of 20+ yards. Good weather team, passing coach, lot of upside here.

      4) Torry Holt, Rams-- Addition of Bennett, McMichael will be boon to Bulger in red zone, but is going to hurt numbers of Holt, Bruce, Jackson. Last year, Holt had 12.8 yards/catch, a dip from career average, which speaks to offense Linehan is using, which is more balanced and more useful than old one.

      3) Roy Williams, Lions-- TDs went up from 12 to 24 last year, in first year of Martz Madness; now, with Calvin Johnson on other side, #11's numbers will go way up. Detroit passed for almost 500 yards in first preseason game; you never see that, so they're ready to go, even with summer games not meaning much. Another dome receiver; check their road games late.

      2) Chad Johnson, Bengals-- Had five-week stretch last year, where he averaged 7.4 catches, 153 yards per game; for last three years, he has 25 TDs, 49 catches of 20+ yards, 20 that went 40+ yards. As long as he doesn't turn into an idiot and pout m when he isn't getting lot of catches, he'll be fine.

      1) Marvin Harrison, Colts-- As long as #18 in the QB in Indy, #88 is going to be at top of this list. In last three seasons, has 39 TDs, 48 catches of 20+ yards. Has had 10+ TDs and 1,100+ receving yards eight years in a row, and they play in a dome at home, so late season weather not much of an issue.

            Tuesday’s MLB betting notes

Gagne sets up Red Sox for a fall

What looked like a brilliant acquisition two weeks ago is starting to seem like the biggest mistake of the season for the Boston Red Sox.

Relief pitcher Eric Gagne, who was acquired from the Texas Rangers on July 31, has already blown two saves, which couldn’t have come at a worse time for the ballclub, as the New York Yankees continue to gain ground in the American League East.

On Friday, Gagne single-handedly squandered a 5-1 Red Sox lead when he allowed four runs in one-third of an inning. Then, in his next appearance on Sunday, he was entrusted with a 3-1 lead which was obliterated when Gagne gave up a two-run shot in the eighth inning.

“It’s a bunch of (expletive) is what it is,” Gagne said of his performance after Sunday’s game. “You go out there and do your job. I’m not doing my job right now. I’m letting everybody here down. I need to step up my game and find my game. That’s it. It’s pretty simple."

Part of the problem could be the transition, not only to a baseball-crazy, East Coast city, but also from the role of closer to that of set-up man. However, it won’t get any easier on Gagne as the pennant race gets more heated down the stretch.

            Caught off guard

The New York Mets have suddenly become a little thin at the catcher position.

Regular starter Paul Lo Duca was put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hamstring. The veteran catcher wasn’t happy about the decision, saying “I could probably play through it,” but the team said they didn’t want him to keep reinjuring the muscle.

Lo Duca was replaced in Sunday’s game by backup catcher Ramon Castro, but Castro was forced to leave in the third inning because of discomfort in his lower back. He is listed as day-to-day and has been replaced by veteran backup catcher Mike DiFelice, who was recalled from Triple-A.

Tuesday’s starting pitcher, Orlando Hernandez, is accustomed to working with Castro, but he hasn’t worked with DiFelice before.

            No love for La Russa

Even though the entire country has fallen in love with the Rick Ankiel comeback story, one man in the St. Louis clubhouse isn’t so enamored. Juan Encarnacion lost his spot in the lineup to make way for Ankiel and his magic bat. The right fielder claims he was being a good team player and playing with a hurt knee and he was miffed when La Russa replaced him in the lineup with Ankiel. La Russa told reporters, “there are parts of the game (Encarnacion) could play better.”

Encarnacion, who hit .356 in July, shot back at La Russa, saying he thought the manager’s treatment of the situation was “kind of unprofessional.”

Regardless, La Russa now has a competitive atmosphere in his clubhouse as well as the hot bat of Ankiel, who is hitting .375 with three home runs and six RBIs.

            Twins tweak tanking lineup

The Minnesota Twins are the worst offensive team in baseball since the All-Star break. Even though they have stars like Torii Hunter and the reigning MVP Justin Morneau, the club has scored a major-league low 89 runs since midseason. Their over/under record since that time is 7-20-2.

In an attempt to jumpstart the offense, manager Ron Gardenhire shuffled the lineup, moving Morneau to the cleanup spot, Hunter (who is batting .291 with 79 RBIs) to fifth, and Michael Cuddyer to sixth.

"It's not exactly been clicking the last few days," Gardenhire said of his lineup. "So we figured we'd mix them around a bit and see what happens."

Catcher Joe Mauer was also seen taking fielding practice at first base. Gardenhire said he may play first on days he’s not catching, in order to keep his much-needed bat in the lineup.

            Down and out in Oakland

When Nick Swisher and Mark Kotsay left Sunday’s games with injuries, you could almost hear a collective moan around the city of Oakland. That’s because the A’s have been cursed with a rash of injuries to significant players lately.

Even though neither Swisher nor Kotsay described their problems as serious, if the two aren’t able to play, it would mean that the A’s are without seven regular starters when they host the Chicago White Sox Tuesday. Among the other injured A’s regulars are Eric Chavez, Bobby Crosby, Travis Buck, Chris Snelling, and Chris Denorfia.

              MLB Infirmary Report

Sluggers like Travis Hafner and Aramis Ramirez are trying to shake off nagging injuries as their teams compete in pennant races. Here is this week's MLB Infirmary Report . . .

Atlanta - Octavio Dotel P 15-Day Disabled List
Dotel didn't last long as the Braves' setup man - he was placed on the disabled list last week with a strained shoulder. Dotel should be able to return by the end of the month.

Chi Cubs - Aramis Ramirez 3B Day-to-Day (sore wrist)
Ramirez has barely played in the month of August, and his sore wrist kept him out of the team's series over the weekend. The third baseman could return to action on Tuesday.

Cleveland - Travis Hafner DH Day-to-Day (sore knee)
Hafner also has a sore hamstring to go along with his sore knee, and he wasn't even able to serve as the Tribe's DH on the weekend. He could be back on Tuesday as well.

Colorado - Willy Taveras OF Day-to-Day (strained quad)
Taveras still hasn't fully recovered from his strained quad, and the Rockies have been keeping him out of the starting lineup. Taveras should be able to start again on Tuesday.

Detroit - Kenny Rogers P 15-Day Disabled List
Rogers is probably about a week away from returning to the Tigers' rotation. The lefty is on the disabled list with an elbow injury, but will begin throwing in the bullpen this week.

Houston - Hunter Pence OF 15-Day Disabled List
The Astros want to get their star rookie outfielder back onto the field by the end of the month. Pence (sprained wrist) has started to participate in batting practice with the team.

LA Angels - Gary Matthews Jr. OF Day-to-Day (sore knee)
Matthews (sore knee) was limited to DH duties late last week, and he then sat out on Sunday afternoon. The outfielder will be re-evaluated before the team plays Tuesday.

NY Mets - Paul Lo Duca C 15-Day Disabled List
Lo Duca was forced onto the disabled list with a sore hamstring over the weekend, and he'll miss two weeks. His backup, Ramon Castro, is now day-to-day with a sore back.

NY Mets - Pedro Martinez P 15-Day Disabled List
Martinez wasn't back to major-league form in his first rehab start - he gave up six runs in three innings. The righthander will make his next rehab start at some point this week.

NY Yankees - Roger Clemens P Out Until August 15(suspension)
Clemens decided not to appeal the five-game suspension he received from the league, and he's serving it right now. The righthander is expected to rejoin the rotation Saturday.

Philadelphia - Shane Victorino OF 15-Day Disabled List
The Phillies hope to get Victorino back from the disabled list at some point this week. The speedy outfielder (calf injury) is likely to begin a minor-league rehab stint Tuesday.

St. Louis - Juan Encarnacion OF Day-to-Day (sore knee)
Encarnacion missed Sunday's game with a sore knee, and he missed the previous games to give Rick Ankiel a chance to play. The outfielder should be available this week.

Washington - Dmitri Young 1B Day-to-Day (sore hamstring)
Young was out of the Nationals' starting lineup through the weekend with a sore hamstring. The slugging first baseman is expected to get back on the field on Tuesday.

                    Streaking Pitchers

                    Tuesday, August 14

                    HOT

Scott Kazmir (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) – Tampa Bay's left-handed ace has stepped up his game over his past five starts going 4-1 with a dazzling 1.17 ERA while averaging over seven strikeouts per game during that stretch. He’s allowed only one earned run in his last three outings - all wins for the D-Rays. Tonight he will face the Boston Red Sox with oddsmakers pricing him as a +131 road underdog.

Joe Saunders (Los Angeles Angels) – In a rotation that features John Lackey, Kelvim Escobar and Jered Weaver, it’s easy to overlook Saunders. Big mistake. Saunders is a perfect 6-0 on the season and although he’s allowed his share of earned runs, Angles bats have stepped it up during his starts. He’s getting an average of more than six runs of support per start. The runs might be harder to come by tonight however when the Angels take on Roy Halladay and the Jays. Los Angeles is listed as a +151 road underdog.

Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) – Francis continues to roll, winning his last three trips to the mound and improving to 8-0 over his last 11 starts. The Rockies have won eight games in a row that the lefty has started while backers have collected 8.75 units during the stretch. The Rockies are in San Diego to face the Padres tonight with Colorado listed as a +107 underdog. Francis is 7-2 with a 3.47 ERA on the road this season.

                    COLD

Dontrelle Willis (Florida Marlins) – Willis finds himself on the cold list again, but really, how do you leave a guy off who hasn’t won a game in over two months of action? The D-Train has gone 13 straight outings without a victory, with his last win coming on May 29. He is 0-9 while the Marlins have won just three games he’s started during that stretch and they've lost the last six times he’s taken the hill. Books have Florida listed as a –133 favorite against the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight and the total set at nine.

Jeremy Bonderman (Detroit Tigers) – The worst nightmare of Detroit bettors seems to be coming true as the Tigers ace has completely lost his stuff recently. He’s lost his last four starts while posting an inexcusable 11.20 ERA during the losing streak. He’s allowed at least five earned runs and eight hits in each of the four outings. The Tigers have lost 15 of their last 21 games and have seen their lead in the AL Central disappear, dropping them into a tie with the Indians for top spot. They’ll open a pivotal two-game set with Cleveland tonight and Detroit is set as a +135 underdog in the opener.

Chris Capuano (Milwaukee Brewers) – Capuano is 0-9 over his last 14 starts with the Brewers losing all 14 games in which Capuano has taken to the hill. Enough said.

                    Other notables

Orlando Hernandez (New York Mets) – The Mets have won six straight games El Duque has started.

Ian Snell (Pittsburgh Pirates) – Snell is 0-5 over his last six starts with the Pirates losing all six games.

                        Hot Lines

New York Mets at Pittsburgh Pirates (+123, 8 ½)

The Mets’ lead in the NL East is shrinking and they’re only 1-7 in their last eight games at PNC Park, but those factors only sweeten New York’s odds for tonight’s series opener.

New York went 2-1 in its only series with Pittsburgh so far in 2007, a three-game set at Shea Stadium in late July. The series win helped boost the Mets’ record against NL Central opponents to 21-9 this season, tops in the NL.

Pittsburgh starter Ian Snell had his best second-half outing in his most recent start, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Bucs to a win. That leaves them 0-6 in Snell’s post-break starts, the mirror image of the Mets’ 6-0 record in Orlando Hernandez’s starts since the All-Star game.

Keep an eye on Moises Alou, who went 8-for-21 with three homers in the last five Mets games. He missed two months this season with a quadriceps strain but his hot bat could be the offensive spark the Mets need to solidify their division lead.

                        Pick: Mets -131

Arizona Diamondbacks at Florida Marlins (-134, 9)

Arizona has won 17 of its last 21 games yet they continue to get attractive odds.

The D-backs face the D-Train tonight, but Dontrelle Willis’ numbers don’t match his reputation. Willis hasn’t won a decision since May and struggles in Miami. For the record, 17 runs have crossed the plate in Dontrelle’s 13 post-break innings at home and he’s 2-8 with a 5.52 ERA for the season at Dolphins Stadium.

Byung-Hyun Kim, on the other hand, led the Marlins to wins in each of his last two starts in Miami posting a 2.19 ERA along the way. Arizona acquired Kim off waivers in early August and the South Korean starter faces his former employer with a much better team behind him now.

"Are we going to have a 40-home run guy? No,” first baseman Tony Clark told the Arizona Republic. “Are we going to have a guy drive in 100 runs? Probably not. Are we going to have a guy score 100 runs? Probably not. Are we going to have a .300 hitter? Maybe.”

“But we've been consistent on the mound. We've been consistent in the bullpen. Our defense has been outstanding, and we've gotten hits at the right time to win ballgames that night."

                        Pick: Diamondbacks +125

Minnesota Twins at Seattle Mariners (-104, 9)

The Mariners are the AL version of the D-backs, a Western contender that hasn’t convinced baseball nation of its merits yet. MLB bettors can take advantage of the continuing lack of respect for Seattle, who pulled out another win last night despite facing the Twins’ best starter in Johan Santana.

The ninth-inning win bumped Seattle to 19-7 in its last 26 home games, a .731 winning percentage that has netted M’s backers 12.91 units over that span.

Minnesota starts Matt Garza tonight and while Garza’s recent numbers are far better than those of Horacio Ramirez, bettors need only look at the pair’s most recent starts to see that starters’ form doesn’t mean everything when wagering on baseball. Garza pitched a gem but took the loss in a 1-0 game while Ramirez was rocked on the same night but emerged as the winner in a 13-8 slugfest.

The final scores underline two basic truths: Seattle is in a playoff position because it supplements its pitching by scoring scads of runs; Minnesota is an afterthought in the AL postseason scene because its bats are completely silent (especially against left-handed pitching).

                        Pick: Mariners -104

A big American League Central series tonight in Cleveland sets up nicely for the Indians as C.C. Sabathia takes the mound with a 9-4 record and 3.07 ERA at Jacobs Field this season. He'll face Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman, who has reflected the Tigers' recent struggles with an 0-3 record and 13.50 ERA over his last three starts. Cleveland looks like a good pick (-150) according to Dunkel, which has the Indians favored straight up by 3. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (-150). Here are all of today's games.

NY Yankees - Roger Clemens P Out Until August 15 (suspension)

"The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice.
