      Streaking Pitchers

      Friday, August 10

      Hot

Scott Baker (Minnesota Twins) - While Twins backers have been raving about another young arm in their rotation, Matt Garza, Baker has quietly made his way to the hot portion of this list. Baker is 2-1 over his last three outings with a 1.96 ERA for the Twins, +173 underdogs tonight against the Los Angeles Angels. The young righty is not allowing any runners to get on base over the hot streak while posting a sparkling 0.65 WHIP.

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) - Bedard has been just about the best pitcher in baseball since June 1. The hard-throwing lefty is 8-0 over his last 10 starts and he allowed more than three runs in only one of those outings. Bedard also has a 2.89 ERA since July 21 and an ERA of 2.15 at home this season. Oddsmakers have Bedard's Orioles as a -101 pick 'em tonight at Camden Yards against the Boston Red Sox.

      Cold

Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals) - Think Meche is worth the $55-million dollar contract he signed before the season? Not if you've been checking out his numbers recently. Meche is 0-3 in his last three starts with a stiff 6.38 ERA to go along with a .370 OBP against. With the Royals priced as +111 underdogs tonight at Kaufman Stadium against the Toronto Blue Jays, Meche has sucked all the value out of taking Kansas City.

Jason Marquis (Chicago Cubs) - Marquis is headed south at a bad time with the Cubs in the middle of a pennant race. Marquis has a 7.71 ERA since July 21 but that's not even the worst of it. The former Cardinals starter is allowing nearly every second batter to reach base during the skid, posting a .418 OBP against. Books have the Cubs as +141 underdogs tonight against the Colorado Rockies.

        LA Dodgers at St. Louis
The Dodgers were able to avoid a sweep against also-ran Cincinnati yesterday thanks to Rafael Furcal's 11th-inning HR, but now must stay on the road against a team still very much alive in the NL Central: St. Louis. The Cards got a charge out of converted-outfielder Rick Ankiel's three-run HR last night to beat Chris Young and the Padres (5-0) en route to taking three out of four from San Diego. Tonight St. Louis comes back with its most consistent starter in Adam Wainwright, who has won four of his last five decisions, while the Dodgers' Brad Penny has dropped two straight. The Cardinals look like a good underdog pick (+105) according to Dunkel, which has St. Louis favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: St. Louis (+105). Here are all of today's games.

Note: Due to travel requirements, I will not be posting picks for Saturday, August 11 or Sunday, August 12, but will post my next picks late Monday afternoon, August 13. I apologize for any inconvenience...Bob Dunkel.

          Hot Lines

          Friday, August 10

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals (8, +103)

The Dodgers snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-4 extra-innings win over the Cincinnati Reds yesterday, but it wasn’t exactly a convincing victory. L.A. had gone 28 innings without a score before getting on the board in the first against the Reds on Thursday, but it wasn't enough to keep them from playing under the total for the fourth straight time.

As they head to St. Louis for a three-game series this weekend, the omens are not good. The Dodgers have failed to win at Busch Stadium since May 2005 and have dropped 10 of the last 11 there.

They hand the ball to Brad Penny (13-3, 2.66) for today’s game, but he has lost his last two starts overall and is 0-3 with a 7.17 ERA in his last four outings against the Cardinals.

          Pick: Cardinals +103

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles (8, -101)

The Boston Red Sox's struggles out West continued this week as they went 3-3 in six games against the Oakland A’s and the L.A. Angels. Today, they start a new set at Camden Yards hoping to rebuild their lead over the Yankees in the AL East.

The game features the day’s best pitching matchup: Daisuke Matsuzaka (13-8, 3.70) vs. Erik Bedard (12-4, 3.09). The Orioles pitcher is first in the league with a 2.53 ERA since June 1, while Dice-K is third with a 2.64 ERA.

It’s going to be quite the battle, but the Red Sox have won 12 of the last 14 in Baltimore – six of the last eight against the Orioles overall – and they should be able to add another to that today.

          Pick: Red Sox -107

Seattle Mariners at Chicago White Sox (9, -124)

They say that pitching wins games, but having a hot hitter in your lineup certainly helps – just look at the Mariners. They swept the Orioles this week with Ichiro Suzuki recording at least three hits in each of the three games.

Seattle banged in 31 runs as they swept Baltimore, and today they face a Chicago White Sox outfit that has given up 13 runs over three games to the Cleveland Indians this week.

The White Sox will face Seattle lefty Jarrod Washburn (8-8, 4.18) today and he is 5-2 with a 3.03 ERA in his last 10 starts against them. Chicago has struggled badly against left-handers this season, posting a 9-20 record.

          Pick: Mariners +116
