    Six-pack for Tuesday

Six college football teams that should lose points in polls for scheduling these opponents........

-- Michigan vs Appalachian State-- Don't tell me ASU won last two I-AA national titles; Wolverines scheduling this is a disgrace. They couldn't find a I-A opponent? Baloney.

-- Alabama vs Western Carolina-- Tide beat these guys 52-0 in 2004; guess they want Saban to have a happy opener

-- Auburn vs Tennessee Tech-- Tech was 4-7 last year; this would be a decent hoop game, but Tigers prep for Georgia with very easy contest here.

-- Arkansas vs Chattanooga-- Mocs were 3-8 in I-AA a year ago; Hogs prepare for Auburn with this cupcake.

-- Wisconsin vs The Citadel-- Paul Maguire's alma mater lost to Texas A&M, Pitt by combined score of 86-9 in '06, so as long as check clears, this is good day for Citadel.

-- Ohio State vs Youngstown State-- Guess this is a way for Tressel to write his former employer a big check, but what in the name of Bill Snyder are Ohio State, Michigan doing both opening with I-AA opponents?

Tuesday's List of 13: Our top fantasy running backs.......

#1 is so obvious, we made it a list of 14........

      14) Marshawn Lynch, Bills-- Played in pro-style offense out at Cal, could step right in and be big factor in Buffalo.

      13) Reggie Bush, Saints-- Unique setup with McAllister isn't good for either fantasy-wise, but it gives the Saints explosive offense, and Bush will hit enough big plays to justify him on your squad.

      12) Jerious Norwood, Falcons-- No Vick, no Dunn, so Falcons have to use this Mississippi State product to try and shorten game and take heat off suspect QB Harrington.

      11) Laurence Maroney, Patriots-- New England looks to be a passing team with their new receivers, but we think that is a sign for Maroney to get more touches near the goal line.

      10) Willis McGahee, Ravens-- Should be excited about being at Miami U North; Not sure why Buffalo let him go.

      9) Willie Parker, Steelers-- 2,696 rushing yards the last couple seasons, with seven games of 100+ yards in '06; only red flag is whether new coaching staff will stress the run as much as previous regime did. They threw bomb on first play at Hall of Fame game; is that a sign of things to come?

      8) Larry Johnson, Chiefs-- Holding out as this is written, and that often is sign of trouble ahead. KC traded Trent Green, so teams will stack the run more, especially with no credible NFL QB set to step in. After 416 carries last year, draft at your own risk; if you need to ask why, see Anderson, Jamal.

      7) Edgerrin James, Cardinals-- Addition of Russ Grimm as the offensive line coach makes James prime prospect for a better 2007; his TD s dropped from 13 to 6 last year, but he still ean for 1,159 yards on a poor team that should improve in '07.

      6) Rudi Johnson, Bengals-- Explosive Bengals can score in a lot of ways; Johnson has scored exactly 12 TDs in last three seasons, but his longest run last year was 22 yards, so not as explosive as he once was, and he doesn't catch ball real well.

      5) Joseph Addai, Colts-- Dominic Rhodes is in Oakland, the Colts still have Manning-Harrison-Wayne, so this LSU alum is all set for another big season. Had 1,406 total yards in his rookie year with seven TDs and a Super Bowl ring. Not bad.

      4) Travis Henry, Broncos-- 1,211 yards for Tennessee a year ago, after totalling 661 yards previous two seasons, think the move to Denver will take him to another level, as it also has for other, less-talented runners.

      3) Shaun Alexander, Seahawks-- Steady, dependable, plays in few rain games a year, which makes running more important, and his team has the lead a lot. Think the Giants would re-do the Ron Dayne-instead of-Alexander pick?

      2) Steven Jackson, Rams-- Addition of receivers Bennett and McMichael might make Rams more of passing team near goal line, but that just saves this great runner wear-and-tear as the season goes on. Other than LT, he's the best.

      1) LaDanian Tomlinson, Chargers-- No-brainer here; state-of-the-art at his position. Even throws for a TD now and then.

            MLB - Winning Points

            MLB
            Winning Points

            Tuesday, August 7

            BEGINNING MONDAY AUGUST 6

            Chicago Cubs at Houston (3) 6th, 7th, 8th

The Cubs are rolling right now, as they continue to climb in the NL?Central while their team ERA continues to decline (3.86, 2nd lowest in the league). But they’ve had a terrible time dealing with lefthanders (9-15, -$1030 overall with only 2.8 runs per game on the road), and Wandy Rodriguez has been superb in his 12 starts at Minute Maid Park (+$610, 1.77 ERA). PREFERRED: W. Rodriguez.

            San Diego at St. Louis (4) 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th

We’re partial to the Padres in this series, given the fact that they tend to be more profitable when they venture outside of Petco Park (+$390). But despite last Sunday’s outburst they’ve struggled at the plate, and the Cardinals are still within striking distance in the NL Central. We’ll stay away for now. PREFERRED: None.

            Milwaukee at Colorado (3) 6th, 7th, 8th

The Brewers are on the verge of falling out of first place in the NL?Central, and they’ve not been successful against righthanders outside of Miller Park (only 15-23, -$905). The Rockies are hanging close to the leaders in the competitive NL?West, thanks in large part to their strong showing against righthanders at Coors Field (23-13, +$975 with 5.8 runs per game). We should get some chances to use the home team. PREFERRED: Rockies when righty meets righty.

            Washington at San Francisco (4) 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th

The Nationals are not a team you want to make a habit of betting against (+$1140 so far in 2007). The Giants are almost as bad a team, but unlike Washington, they tend to be favored at home much of the time. That will no doubt be the case in this series, so take a shot with the visitor any time they send a righty to the hill (SF -$745 vs. righties at ATT?Park). PREFERRED: Righthanders vs. the Giants.

            N.Y. Yankees at Toronto (3) 6th, 7th, 8th

The Yankees have looked sharp since the All-Star Break, taking 3 out of 4 from Toronto in the Bronx along the way. But the Blue Jays continue to play hard, and they look like an good value when Andy Pettitte (-$500) is on the mound, given their 13-3 (+$1010)?record vs. lefties here at Rogers Centre. PREFERRED: Blue Jays vs. Pettitte.

            Tampa Bay at Detroit (4) 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th

The Devil Rays somehow managed to take 2 out of 3 the only time these teams met this year (+$135), and when you consider how much money the Tigers have lost vs. righthanders here at Comerica (-$1025), the high priced visiting underdog looks very tempting. PREFERRED: Righthanders vs. the Tigers at +175 or better.

            Oakland at Texas (3) 6th, 7th, 8th

The Athletics have been a major disappointment in 2007 (-$1445 overall), and while it’’s difficult to endorse the last place Rangers, they have turned a modest profit against lefthanders at home (+$290), and they are likely to face at least one given that Lenny Dinardo &?Dallas Braden (-$660, 5.65 ERA?in 7 starts)?are now being used as starters. PREFERRED: Rangers vs. lefthanders.

            Boston at L.A. Angels (3) 6th, 7th, 8th

The Red Sox spanked The Angels when they visited Fenway Park back in April (3-0, +$300), and they are nicely poised to continue their winning ways here at Anaheim. They’ve been sensational vs. righthanders on the road (24-11, +$1480)?and that’s what they’ll be up against here. LA?is a formidable foe, but their pitching appears suspect at the moment. PREFERRED: Red Sox vs. righthanders.

              MLB Betting Notes
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Tuesday's MLB betting notes

              Deadly lineup?

You think the addition of Mark Teixeira has helped the Atlanta Braves offense? Since the Braves acquired the slugging first baseman the offense is averaging over eight runs a game. Books have been slow to react to the Braves' booming bats –they’ve played over in seven straight contests.

The switch to the National League hasn’t troubled Teixeira. The switch hitter has three homers and seven RBIs in just five games.

Manager Bobby Cox gets another key bat back today. Center fielder Andruw Jones missed the last two contests because of a sore elbow but he assured reporters he’d be ready to play Tuesday.

The Braves are listed as +138 underdogs Tuesday against the New York Mets with the total set at 9.

              ChiSox speed kills

The Chicago White Sox are no longer a bashing big league club. Rather than wait for sluggers like Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko or Jim Thome to knock one out of the park with runners aboard, manager Ozzie Guillen is playing small ball and manufacturing runs.

Guillen prefers to use the team’s speed to get runners in scoring position. Leadoff hitter Jerry Owens rarely gets the red light and Scott Podsednik and Darin Erstad get the same freedom.

Bench players Danny Richar and Josh Fields can also steal a bag when needed.

"Even with Josh – Josh isn’t the fastest guy, but he will get you something going,” Guillen told the Chicago Sun Times. “We need that help from those guys to make things happen.”

The stress on running has helped. Chicago has won eight of its last 13.

Help on the way for the Tigers

Many baseball pundits were surprised when the Detroit Tigers failed to pick up a reliever at the trade deadline. It had seemed general manager Dave Dombrowski would make a play for Eric Gagne but they never got close.

Maybe that’s because Dombrowski knew he had help on the way. Flamethrowers Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya have been on the disabled list for an extended period, but Rodney made his first appearance since June on Sunday and Zumaya should be back for September.

Manager Jim Leyland was excited to see Rodney’s velocity return after the pitcher battled tendinitis in his right shoulder. Rodney routinely tossed his fastball at 96 mph, much more zip than what he had before going on the DL.

“He was a little erratic, but that’s OK,” Leyland told the Detroit News. “The test will come after you use him a few times and see if he can maintain his velocity.”

Catcher Mike Rabelo was more optimistic about what he saw from Rodney.

“He threw that 3-and-1 called strike to (A.J.) Pierzynski at 99. That was down and had tremendous life. But what I liked was that he actually shook off a couple of change-ups,” Rabelo said of Rodney’s best pitch, “which I thought was cool.”

                Baseball – Injury Report

                MLB

                Tuesday, August 7

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Injuries
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                MLB Infirmary Report

Star outfielders Carlos Beltran, Andruw Jones, and Alfonso Soriano are all dealing with various injuries right now. Here is this week's edition of the MLB Infirmary Report . . .

Atlanta - Andruw Jones OF Day-to-Day (sore elbow)
Jones missed the Braves' games on both Saturday and Sunday due to a sore elbow. The outfielder, though, isn't expected to go on the DL, and he could play on Tuesday.

Chi Cubs - Alfonso Soriano OF 15-Day Disabled List
Soriano will miss a month or more of action after suffering a quad injury against the Mets on Sunday night. The Cubs will now seek a stop-gap solution until he can return.

Chi Cubs - Carlos Zambrano P Day-to-Day (leg cramps)
Zambrano left a second consecutive start with leg cramps on Friday night, but he pitched well once again before his exit. The righthander isn't expected to miss any time.

Cincinnati - Aaron Harang P Day-to-Day (sore back)
Harang missed a start last week because of a sore back, but he was able to throw pain-free on the weekend. The Reds expect Harang to be able to make a start Wednesday.

Colorado - Brian Fuentes P 15-Day Disabled List
Fuentes went on the disabled list with a strained rib-cage on July 4, but he has begun throwing bullpen sessions. The closer is likely to be sent on a rehab stint this week.

Detroit - Kenny Rogers P 15-Day Disabled List
The Tigers had hoped that Rogers could start against the Athletics this Friday, but the lefthander's elbow was still sore on the weekend. He could return to the team next week.

Florida - Miguel Cabrera 3B Day-to-Day (bruised elbow)
Marlins fans were concerned to see their star third baseman leave Sunday's game after getting plunked on the elbow by a pitch, but Cabrera is expected to be fine for Tuesday.

LA Dodgers - Jeff Kent 2B Day-to-Day (sore hamstring)
Kent missed a good chunk of last week's schedule with a sore hamstring, but the team expects him to be able to avoid the disabled list and return to the lineup Tuesday night.

NY Mets - Carlos Beltran OF 15-Day Disabled List
The Mets had hoped Beltran's strained oblique wouldn't require a trip to the disabled list, but the outfielder was indeed shelved last week. He could return as soon as Aug. 9.

NY Yankees - Jason Giambi DH 15-Day Disabled List
Giambi has now completed a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Scranton, and he is expected to return from the disabled list to the Yankees' lineup at some point this week.

Oakland - Eric Chavez 3B 15-Day Disabled List
With his sore back keeping him out of the lineup Chavez was finally placed on the disabled list on Friday. He could be able to return to the roster in less than two weeks.

Philadelphia - Chase Utley 2B 15-Day Disabled List
Utley had surgery on his broken right hand, and the best-case scenario would see him return to the Phillies' lineup by the end of August (depending on how well rehab goes).

Philadelphia - Shane Victorino OF 15-Day Disabled List
The Phillies lost another key offensive contributor when Victorino went down with a calf injury early last week. The outfielder was put on the DL and will miss a couple weeks.

San Diego - Chris Young P 15-Day Disabled List
Young wasn't around to prevent Barry Bonds' record-tying home run on Saturday, but the Padres hope to have the righthander back from the disabled list on Thursday night.

                Toronto - A.J. Burnett P 15-Day Disabled List
Burnett has missed the past month of action with a sore shoulder, but he could be back in Toronto's rotation this week. The righthander had a successful rehab start on Monday.

Looper opened the inning with a single to center and then with the Cardinals up 8-3 bunted for another hit. Miles followed Looper twice with singles, the latter driving in a run. The 10-run inning was the most against the Padres since they gave up 11 in a 15-5 loss at St. Louis on May 8, 2005.

                  SLUMPING

Milwaukee has lost 10 of its last 14 games following a 6-2 loss to Colorado on Monday.

"I walked over to Casey (Blake) and Victor (Martinez) and said, 'If you're not right with Jesus, get right with Him, because He may be coming back. I just got Morneau out twice."' -- Cleveland righty Paul Byrd after he retired Minnesota slugger Justin Morneau twice on weak popouts in Cleveland's 4-0 win on Monday.

                    Dunkel Index

                    Minnesota at Kansas City
The Twins were handcuffed last night by Paul Byrd and now have to go on the road to face another hot pitcher in Kansas City's Brian Bannister. The former Met is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in his last three starts and should get enough support from a Royal team that has won four straight at home while outscoring the opposition 29-6. Minnesota starter Boof Bonser has also struggled with an 0-5 record and 5.13 ERA in his last nine starts. The last time Bonser picked up a win was June 10. Kansas City looks like a good pick (-115) tonight according to Dunkel, which has the Royals favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Kansas City (-115). Here are all of today's games.

                        Streaking Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Tuesday's streaking starting pitchers

                        HOT

Brian Bannister (Kansas City Royals) – Believe it or not, a Royals pitcher is hot. Bannister is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in his last three starts with Kansas City winning all three games. Over the stretch, Bannister threw seven innings in each start allowed a total of four earned runs. Books have the Royals listed at –103 against the Minnesota Twins tonight.

Joe Saunders (Los Angeles Angels) – Saunders is still undefeated on the season at 5-0 and posts a respectable 3.10 ERA. The Angels have won the last seven games in which Saunders has started. Tonight the left-hander will take on the struggling Boston Red Sox with oddsmakers setting Los Angeles as a slight –110 favorite and the total at 9 ½.

                        COLD

Jeff Weaver (Seattle Mariners) – This guy seemed to tease M’s backers when he actually started pitching well during a stretch in early July. Seattle won four straight games that Weaver started at that time. It was a brief renaissance, however, as Weaver has lost his last four trips to the mound while posting an ugly 6.34 ERA over those games. Tonight Weaver and the M’s are listed at +100 in Baltimore.

Chris Capuano (Milwaukee Brewers) – Capuano is easily the coldest starting pitcher in the majors right now. After starting the season 5-0, he hasn’t won a single game since. During the stretch that spans more than four months, the Brewers have lost every game he’s started, an astonishing 13-straight games. Of the 13 games, oddsmakers had Milwaukee favored in nine of his outings. Tonight Capuano faces the Colorado Rockies as a +108 underdog.

Steve Trachsel (Baltimore Orioles) – The O’s veteran starter has had his share of struggles this season and recent games have provided plenty. Trachsel is winless in his last seven trips to the mound including four outings in which he allowed at least five earned runs. Things won’t get any easier tonight as Trachsel takes on the Mariners, a team he’s winless against in his career (0-4 with a nasty 8.05 ERA). Baltimore is priced at –108 in the tonight's contest.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Detroit Tigers: (-175, 10 ½)

The smoking-hot bat of Carl Crawford leads the D-Rays’ charge against Detroit tonight, facing a pitcher that has a rough history with Tampa Bay.

Crawford is batting an outstanding .538 the past week with two home runs and five RBIs. He’s hoping his play rubs off on the rest of the team in time to take advantage of the sliding Nate Robertson.

Robertson hasn’t recorded a win in his last three starts, getting little help from Detroit’s floundering bats. The Tigers lefty is 0-3 in four career starts against Tampa Bay with a 5.94 ERA. He has allowed 24 hits to the Devil Rays in just under 17 innings of work.

                          Pick: Devil Rays +167

Milwaukee Brewers at Colorado Rockies: (-116, 10 ½)

Colorado has won 19 of its last 24 games at Coors Field, including Monday’s 6-2 win against Milwaukee. The Rockies are 57-54 on the season, getting 31 of those wins at home.

"It seems like when we need a big hit here, we get it," Rockies first baseman Todd Helton told the Rocky Mountain News. "On the road, we struggle a little bit more with guys in crucial situations."

Colorado leads the National League in homefield batting average (.294) and scores more than five runs per game at Coors. The Rockies have one of most potent offenses in the NL, ranking in the top 10 in runs, average and OPS.

                          Pick: Rockies -116

Washington Nationals at San Francisco Giants: (-142, 8 ½)

Will Washington’s Mike Bacsik be forever inked in the history books as the pitcher that gave up home run No. 756 to Barry Bonds?

He did allow two dingers in his most recent start. But outside of those slip-ups, Bacsik has proved solid pitching for the Nationals.

Washington has won five of Bacsik’s last six starts and over his last three, the lefty is 3-0 with an ERA of 2.18. The secret to his sudden turn around might be a more aggressive approach. Bacsik is throwing more first-pitch strikes, which is keeping his pitch counts low and his arm strong in later innings.

                          Pick: Nationals +134

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MLB - Winning Points (For series starting 8/7)

                            MLB
                            Winning Points

                            Tuesday, August 7

                            SERIES BEGINNING TUESDAY AUGUST 7

                            Florida at Philadelphia (3) 7th, 8th, 9th

Despite their recent woes the Marlins have posted a nice profit in road games vs. righthanders (+$575). Their two starting lefties, Dontrelle Willis and Scott Olsen, have been getting roughed up lately, but considering the Phillies’ 15-20 (-$580) record vs. southpaws, they could both be a solid underdog value. At least one of them should see action. PREFERRED: Willis & Olsen vs. righthanders.

                            Atlanta at N.Y. Mets (3) 7th, 8th, 9th

The Mets are clinging to an increasingly tenuous grasp in first place in the NL East, and this could prove to be a pivotal series. The Braves have already taken 6 of 9 from the Mets (+$330) and they’ve had tremendous success on the road vs. righthanders (23-12, +$825) while New York has lost money here at Shea (-$600). The Braves are pitching well (3.37 ERA last 10 days) and have a great shot at making up some ground. PREFERRED: Braves vs. righthanders.

                            L.A. Dodgers at Cincinnati (3) 7th, 8th, 9th

The Dodgers swept the series when these teams squared off before (+$300) but the Reds seem to be playing somewhat better, so caution is advised. LA has had success against lefthanders, particularly in road games (10-4, +$650) so we’ll take a shot when Bobby Livingston, recently added to the Reds’ rotation takes the mound for Cincy. PREFERRED: Dodgers vs. Livingston.

                            Pittsburgh at Arizona (3) 7th, 8th, 9th

The Diamondbacks continue to excel here at Chase Field (33-21, +$810) and they should dispatch the hapless Pirates without much difficulty. Pittsburgh averages just 4.1 runs per game and they’ve lost money in all settings this year (-$1440). They’ll be hard pressed to salvage a win. PREFERRED: Diamondbacks in all games.

                            Seattle at Baltimore (3) 7th, 8th, 9th

The Mariners seem to have recovered from their sudden losing streak, and they continue to post outstanding numbers when opposing lefthanders (20-8, +$1475 in ‘07). They may miss Eric Bedard, but Brian Burres (4.89 as a starter) is likely to see action and he makes an inviting target. PREFERRED: Mariners vs. Burres.

                            Minnesota at Kansas City (3) 7th, 8th, 9th

The Twins have not looked sharp in recent days (4-6, -$155 with 3.3 runs per game and a 5.38 ERA among starters) so they could be vulnerable here. But the Royals are lousy here at Kaufman Stadium (24-31, -$300). We’ll pass for the time being. PREFERRED: None.

                            Cleveland at Chicago W. Sox (3) 7th, 8th, 9th

For all their woes in 2007, the White Sox have been making life miserable for the top contenders in their division. They’ve posted a modest profit vs. righties here at US Cellular (+$140) while the Tribe has lost money vs. righties outside of Jacobs Field (-$430). PREFERRED: White Sox when righty meets righty
