  • Soriano out 2-4 weeks.....

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs star left fielder Alfonso Soriano strained his right quadriceps during Sunday's 8-3 loss to the New York Mets and will be sidelined two-to-four weeks, a major loss for a team trying to make the playoffs.

Soriano was scheduled for an MRI after Sunday night's game.

"How devastating. I mean, leadoff hitter, valuable guy, leads my team in home runs, he's got a lot of energy," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said.

"It's going to be a tough loss."

Piniella said he didn't know what the Cubs would do to fill the hole and would discuss potential moves with general manager Jim Hendry. The Cubs are one game behind Milwaukee in the NL Central.

Soriano singled with two outs in the third inning for Chicago's first hit and then tried to go to third on a single by Ryan Theriot. Soriano pulled up between second and third, favoring his right leg, and tried to hop to third base, where he was tagged out easily. He was then helped off the field and taken out of the game.

"A lot of things go through your mind when one of your best players pulls up like that," Chicago's Mark DeRosa said. "It looked like he was in agony. Obviously someone has to step up. We have to come together and pick up the slack. Hope he gets back as soon as possible. I know it's going to be a while."

Soriano was replaced in left field by Cliff Floyd, who had been playing right. DeRosa went from second base to right and Mike Fontenot entered the game at second.

Soriano is batting .297 with 18 homers and 18 stolen bases.

The Mets were leading 1-0 at the time behind Tom Glavine, who became the 23rd pitcher with 300 wins.

    Jordan...read the urgent thread.

We touched on it a bit. Interested to read your thoughts.

I'm not as devistated as a lot of other cub fans are.

    It's a loss...yes. A big one...yes.

But the talent is STILL there to compete with Milwaukee.

Absolutely John .. One guy, no matter how well they are playing does not make this team ... We did without Lee and we will do without Soriano ...

Jordan, that's like asking where Wrigley Field is........

Seriously, the reason this WON't devastate the Cubs is because the NL Central sucks and Milwaukee is the most overrated team in baseball (36-42 their last 78 and with a bad manager).

I still like the Cubs to win the division and their bullpen is the only weakness

                        agree agree agree agree agree

It's a weak division and all we have to do is get there. If we get there....all bets are off.

Hell look what St Louis did last year.....

Milwaukee has 15 of the next 21 on the road this month.

These next 21 games will tell a whole hell of a lot.

September for the cubs SHOULD be...and I stress SHOULD be fairly easy. I think we have only one series with a team above .500

I refuse to push that panic button yet.

The Cubs purchased the contract of Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa and placed Alfonso Soriano on the disabled list Monday.

The Cubs also designated infielder Brian Dopirak, currently at Class A Daytona, for assignment. In addition, pitcher Wade Miller has been placed on waivers to grant his unconditional release.

Patterson was batting .299 at Triple-A Iowa with 14 homers, 23 doubles, 62 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. He has primarily hit leadoff all season, batting .300 in the No. 1 spot in the order with a .365 on-base percentage.

Patterson, 24, began the season as a second baseman, but has played the past 10 games in the outfield in both left and center.

He is the younger brother of former Cubs outfielder Corey Patterson, who is now with the Baltimore Orioles.

Soriano strained his right quad Sunday night running the bases and is expected to be sidelined at least two weeks and possibly a month.

Patterson will wear uniform No. 3 and looks to make his Major League debut Monday in Houston when the Cubs face the Astros at 7:05 p.m. CT.

I like this move.....We could have brought up Pie...but Patterson has been knocking the cover off the ball in the minors and he deserves a shot at contributing.
