    Six-pack for Monday

The Eddie Lee Whitson edition-- Ed Whitson was in stands at Giant-Padre game Sunday; I decided to do some research and was surprised at how good his career was..........

-- Ed Whitson is most famous for not doing well in Bronx; he was 15-10 in 34 starts for Bronx, but allowed 255 hits in just 195.2 IP in his 44 games there, not every good.

-- For rest of his career, he allowed only 1,985 hits in 2,045.2 IP, and finished with a career mark of 126-123 in 333 starts.

-- Whitson made the 1980 All-Star team while with Giants.

-- He was 14-8 for the NL champ Padres in 1984.

-- Whitson was once traded straight up for Duane Kuiper, who is now play-by-play voice of the Giants.

-- He was also once traded straight up for Tim Stoddard, who was starting forward on NC State's college basketball championship team in 1974.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.....

      13) Not happy to miss Saints-Steelers on NFL Network last night, because I have digital cable instead of DirecTV. Called my local cable provider; woman said Time-Warner was trying to get the NFL Network. We shall see.

      12) Tom Glavine's first career win was against Pirates in 1987, with a certain Barry Bonds; Glavine drilled Bonds first time he faced him, then picked him off second base.

      11) Brandon Webb hasn't allowed a run in his last three starts covering 23 innings, as Arizona has surged into first place. Carl Crawford went 4-for-5 with a homer on his birthday (#26) but he is stuck in baseball hell with hideous Devil Rays.

      10) Shouldn't every major league team have a coach who was a catcher? Doesn't this position deserve a specialized coach?

      9) It is ironic that PGA Tour events get better ratings when a guy named Woods is playing, because he makes things just boring as hell. The guy is simply too good for everyone else.

      8) Brewers had 6-1 lead in 9th inning at home Sunday and got beat by Phillies, in a stunning collapse. Cubs' loss makes it an even day for the Beermakers, but still..........

      7) Roethlisberger hit Cedric Wilson for 56 yards on first play of season for Steelers, as Pittsburgh beat the Saints 20-7.

      6) It takes a few days to come back to earth after a vacation-- thinking about Las Vegas for my next trip, either in October or next spring. Its been way too long since I visited America's favorite city, so it is time to return.

      5) Nationals have won ten of last eleven home games, but are headed west to become co-stars in the Bonds Circus that tips off in San Francisco Monday night.

      4) Bud Selig, baseball commissioner, is taking next three days off from the Bonds Circus; he is almost openly disdainful of Bonds' record chase. He is sending some underlings as reps of the commissioner's office. The guy couldn't even applaud when Bonds hit #755 Saturday. There are no angels here.

      3) From new commercials, it looks like Chargers have new set of uniforms, and they smartly went back to the white helmet with the lightning bolt on it. Excellent move by them.

      2) Remember to log on to this sire during August for series of fantasy football articles for this season; we'll go position by position; QBs, RBs, WRs and kickers, so make sure you read this before your league's fantasy draft.

      1) Lets hope the money boys at DirecTV and digital cable get their ducks in a row and get the NFL Network on my TV, so I don't miss Jim Mora Sr on that interview show during the NFL season on Monday afternoons. I don't ask for much.

            MLB Betting Notes

            Monday’s MLB betting notes

            Schilling returns to rotation

Curt Schilling will return to the Boston Red Sox on Monday night to play the Los Angeles Angels, making his first start since coming off the disabled list with a shoulder injury.

Schilling, who is 6-4 with a 4.20 ERA this season, hasn’t pitched since June but has been sharp during his rehab starts. In three minor league starts with Triple-A Pawtucket, Schilling didn’t allow a run over his 15 rehab innings. He struck out 18 batters during this stretch and didn’t record a single walk.

Most bettors take a wait-and-see approach when capping a pitcher returning from injury, but a veteran arm like Schilling can have immediate value.

“Usually the more veteran a pitcher is, the better he knows whether or not he is really ready to return,” says David Malinsky of Covers Experts. “In this case we can give (Schilling) the benefit of the doubt.”

Schilling is 12-9 in his last 21 starts against American League West opponents.

            Giambi ready for Yankee return

New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi is expected to rejoin the major league club when they travel to Toronto this week – the same place he suffered the foot injury that has sidelined the slugger since late May.

Giambi’s return to the lineup puts New York in a tough spot. Manager Joe Torre has to find room for Giambi, meaning someone will have to go. The problem is that the entire team is playing great baseball right now.

Likely candidate Andy Phillips is hitting .307 with a .333 average against right-handed pitchers while playing first, and Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui are sharing time as the Yankees designated hitter.

In his minor league rehab, Giambi is 5-for-16 including a homer in his first at-bat on Friday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Before the injury, Giambi was batting .262 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs.

            Baseball genius?

Tony La Russa is up to his old antics. The St. Louis Cardinals manager filled out his lineup card on Saturday night with starting pitcher Joel Pineiro hitting eighth rather than the traditional ninth spot.

La Russa contends the method gives more chances to drive in runs for the big bats in his lineup because the ninth slot becomes an additional leadoff hitter.

“It’s a good strategy to use,” he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It’s not like we’re burning up the league offensively.”

St. Louis has tallied only eight runs in its last four games. The one run on Saturday came off a solo homer by second baseman Adam Kennedy, who was hitting last in the order.

La Russa was mocked for using the same strategy in the second half of the 1998 season. Russa had the pitcher in the eighth spot 72 times and the Cards finished the season four games above .500 after starting the year 40-46.

La Russa says he plans on using the tactic more often this season.

Kid, you’ll go down in history

John Lannan, 22, is the scheduled starter for the Washington Nationals on Monday meaning the kid with only two major league starts under his belt will have to face the slugging machine that is Barry Bonds.

Bonds took Sunday off to “celebrate” his record-tying 755th home run with his family, but he’s expected to be back in the lineup Monday.

Even if you think Bonds is a good bet to break Hank Aaron’s career home run record at AT&T Park against the Nats, that doesn’t necessarily mean the San Francisco Giants are a good bet to win the game.

The Giants are 1-6 in the last seven games that Bonds has hit a big fly.

              Baseball Today - August 6

              SCOREBOARD
              Monday, Aug. 6
Tampa Bay at Detroit (7:05 p.m. EDT). Justin Verlander (11-4) tries to help the Tigers end a five-game losing streak.

              STARS
              Sunday

-Tom Glavine, Mets, earned his 300th victory in an 8-3 win over the Cubs.

-Brandon Webb, Diamondbacks, allowed seven hits and struck out four in his fifth career shutout and Arizona topped the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0.

-Yunel Escobar, Braves, hit a game-ending single in the 10th inning in Atlanta's 6-5 win over Colorado.

-Wes Helms, Phillies, hit a two-out, two-run double in the 11th inning and Philadelphia came back to beat Milwaukee 8-6.

-Scott Baker, Twins, allowed four hits in eight innings and retired 19 of his last 22 batters in Minnesota's 1-0 victory over the Indians.

              300 WINS

Tom Glavine joined pitching's most prestigious club with a vintage performance, earning his 300th win Sunday in the Mets' 8-3 victory over the Cubs. Glavine (10-6) became the 23rd pitcher with 300 victories, the first since former teammate Greg Maddux reached the milestone in 2004 while with the Cubs. The 41-year-old Glavine is only the fifth lefty to win 300.

              HOMESPUN

The New York Yankees beat Kansas City 8-5 on Sunday to wrap up a 5-1 homestand. The Yankees have scored 102 runs in their last eight games at Yankee Stadium and improved to 18-7 since the All-Star break, moving 11 games over .500 for the first time this year.

              DEMOTED

San Diego right-hander Clay Hensley was optioned to Triple-A Portland on Sunday, a day after serving up the home run that allowed Barry Bonds to tie Hank Aaron's record. The demotion had nothing to with Bonds' historic shot. San Diego's bullpen was taxed after two straight extra-inning games, and the Padres needed a fresh arm.

              STRONG IN DEFEAT

Fausto Carmona allowed one run in seven innings but lost in Cleveland's 1-0 loss to Minnesota on Sunday. It was his second straight after winning five in a row. ... Ryan Spilborghs hit a pair of solo home runs in Colorado's 6-5 loss to Atlanta. It was the second time he has hit two homers in a game. He also did it on June 10 at Baltimore.

              STREAKS

Erik Bedard won his career-best eighth straight decision in Baltimore's 11-3 victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday. Bedard (12-4) is 8-0 in his last 10 starts since losing to Colorado on June 10. ... Brandon Webb pitched a complete game in Arizona's 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and extended his scoreless streak to 24 consecutive innings. ... Washington beat St. Louis 6-3 for their first six-game winning streak in more than a year. ... Bobby Jenks pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 32nd save in the Chicago White Sox's 3-1 win over Detroit. He has retired 32 straight batters.

              SPEAKING

''Never really gotten hit by a moving vehicle before. That was the most athletic thing I did all day.'' - Boston's Coco Crisp, on the ''Mariner Moose'' mascot clipping him with an ATV during a stunt in the middle of the fifth inning of a 9-2 win over Seattle on Sunday.

Hatteberg hit a grand slam one at-bat after lining into a triple play as the Red Sox defeated the Texas Rangers 10-7. Hatteberg lined into a triple play in the fourth inning and in the sixth he hit his second career grand slam to move Boston ahead for good.

2002 - At 32, Robb Nen became the youngest player to record 300 saves, as San Francisco beat the Chicago Cubs 11-10. Nen became the 16th member of the 300-save club.

Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants) - Lincecum is demonstrating why he was the top pitching talent taken in the 2006 MLB entry draft. The hard-throwing righty is 2-0 over his last three starts with a miniscule 1.35 ERA to go along with 18 strikeouts. Quite simply, Lincecum has been very difficult to hit; he's posted a .256 OBP against over the span. Oddsmakers have the Giants as -178 favorites tonight against the Washington Nationals as Barry Bonds goes for career home run No. 756.

Jesse Litsch (Toronto Blue Jays) - Bettors looking at the Jays game today against the New York Yankees who think there's a mismatch are mistaken. While Yankees starter Andy Pettitte certainly has the edge in experience and public profile, Litsch has been the better pitcher lately. The former Tampa Bay Devil Rays bat boy has a 2.50 ERA since July 16 for the Jays, +138 underdogs today at Rogers Centre against the Bronx Bombers.

                  Cold

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - Verlander hasn't been his usual self lately, much to the chagrin of Tigers backers. The young righty is winless in three outings with a 5.00 ERA, while walking nine batters in eighteen innings of work. Verlander has also been a better pitcher away from home this season, evidenced by his 72.7 percent quality-start rating on the road versus a 50 percent mark at home. Books have the Tigers as -256 home favorites today against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

David Wells (San Diego Padres) - This might be the end of the line for Boomer. With an 0-2 record and whopping 13.50 ERA since July 17, Wells has been anything but profitable for Padres bettors. Wells has cashed only two starts over his last ten outings for San Diego, +113 road underdogs tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals. Wells has been especially bad away from pitcher-friendly Petco Park, going 2-5 with a 7.27 ERA on the road this season.

                    Monday, August 6

Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins: (-103, 9 ½)

The American League Central race is tightening since the Tribe and the Tigers hit skids this past week. The Twins have taken advantage, winning six of their last eight games and moving to 4 ½ games behind Cleveland.

Minnesota has had success despite its dwindling offense. It only scored five or more runs once during this stretch and averaged three runs per game over the past eight contests. The Twins average 4.61 runs per game on the season.

The lack of production at the plate could come back to bite them today when the Twins face Cleveland’s Paul Byrd. The Indians right-hander hasn’t lost in nearly a month and hasn’t given up more than four earned runs since mid-June.

                    Pick: Indians -105

Oakland Athletics at Texas Rangers: (+105, 10)

The Rangers are happy to be back in the heart of Texas after a 2-7 road trip. Texas was held to four or fewer runs in six of those nine games, including two shutouts.

Today’s game marks the first time the Rangers have played at home since the trade deadline which saw four players, including slugger Mark Teixeira, find new homes.

"It's always nice to get off the road," Rangers manager Ron Washington told MLB.com. "We're starting to play better at home, so it'll be nice to go back with the new group of guys we got and start putting something together."

Left-handed starter John Rheinecker tries to give the new faces in the clubhouse a homecoming to remember when he takes the mound tonight. Rheinecker was hit hard in his previous start but will get a break against the A's, who own one of the worst offenses in baseball. Oakland scores less than five runs per game and bats a collective .251 at the plate.

                    Pick: Texas +105

Washington Nationals at San Francisco Giants: (-181, 8)

Washington has reeled off six straight wins heading into this series with San Francisco – but did we mention these all came at home?

The Nationals are 11-2 at RFK since the All-Star break but 4-6 away from home. This season, Washington is 21-31 on the road, hitting .247 at the plate while averaging less than four runs per road game.

Not only will the Nats have to deal with the Giants' budding ace Tim Lincecum (6-2, 3.75 ERA) tonight but they are ground-zero for sports' biggest show. The media circus surrounding Barry Bonds now that he's tied with Henry Aaron’s 755 home runs should provide quite the distraction despite what the clubhouse says.

"We are just looking at the next series. We are going to try and take three out of four games,” Washington first baseman Dmitri Young told reporters. “We are not worried about the media spectacle that's going to be there because a guy is chasing history. Whoop-de-woo."

                    Pick: Giants -181

                        Cleveland at Minnesota
After losing five straight, the Twins have suddenly won six of their last eight to pull to within 4 1/2 games of first place in the AL Central. They'll look for their third straight win today against the Indians, who have scored just two runs in the last two games while going 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The Tribe may have a tough time generating much offense against Carlos Silva, who is 5-0 with a 3.38 ERA in his last five outings at home. The Twins will be counting on some offense from Justin Morneau, who has feasted on Paul Byrd (.481 average; 3 HRs) this season. Minnesota looks like a good home underdog (-105) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Twins favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (-105). Here are all of today's games.
