          MLB Betting Notes
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hitting .219 is no slump, says Molina

San Francisco Giants catcher Bengie Molina is adamant that he's not struggling despite posting a .219 average in July. He told MLB.com that the numbers aren’t everything and he is happy with his hitting.

"People think that I'm in a slump because I don't get the hits, but that's not really true for me," Molina told the website. "I don't see myself as in a slump because I hit the ball hard, and when you hit the ball hard, it shouldn't be called that."

Molina is batting just .222 with eight RBIs and two homers since the All-Star break, but recently has started to turn that around. Last weekend he averaged .571 (4-for-7) with one homer in two games against the Florida Marlins.

Molina will be catching for Tim Lincecum (6-2, 3.90) on Wednesday as the Giants continue a three-game series with the Dodgers. Los Angeles counters with Mark Hendrickson (4-5, 4.58) and is a -116 favorite with the total set at 8.

          Angels don’t rely on power

The Los Angeles Angels managed just six home runs in July, but according to statistics posted by MLB.com, the power outage did not hurt the team as much as you might expect.

Although they haven't gone deep often, they are still hitting inside the park. The Angels have outscored all their opponents combined this season by 60 runs, and only five teams in the majors have scored more on the road.

During last weekend’s sweep of the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers, the Angels scored 34 runs on 39 hits, with only two of those coming from home runs. That said, the Halos went 11-13 in July and will be looking for more wins – and more power – in August.

They start the month by closing out a three-game series against the Mariners on Wednesday. Jered Weaver (7-5, 3.68) will test his stuff against Felix Hernandez (7-6, 3.85). Seattle is a –131 favorite with the total set at 8.

          Beltran looks set for DL

New York Mets centerfielder Carlos Beltran looks set to go on the disabled list after missing the last five games with an abdominal muscle tear. Reports on MLB.com state that Beltran will likely go on the DL retroactive to July 24, meaning he would only miss seven more games.

"I feel sore, I feel tight, I can't swing, I can't run," Beltran told reporters Monday when asked about his progress. "That's the way I feel, so I'm not able to play. I don't know anything about the disabled list. I'm just waiting for more details from the doctor."

Beltran has struggled with a series of injuries this season but has still managed a .263 average with 19 homers and 62 RBIs. For the past week the Mets have played with a 24-man roster as they monitor his fitness day-to-day.

Without Beltran's powerful bat, the Mets continue a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. New York sends Oliver Perez (9-7, 2.84) to the mound to face Dave Bush (8-8, 4.91) and is a –111 favorite to take the game.

          Slow starters

The Pittsburgh Pirates have lost four of their last five and a lot of the blame lies with their starters' poor form early in games. Pirates pitchers have allowed 19 runs in the opening three innings of the team’s last five outings.

Pitching has become a serious problem at Pittsburgh. Their staff has posted a 5.07 ERA while giving up 112 earned runs over 23 games in July. They lost 17 of those contests to fall 13 ½ games behind division-leading Milwaukee in the NL Central.

The Pirates send Tony Armas (0-3, 6.93) to the mound to face the St. Louis Cardinals in the second of a three-game series on Wednesday. The Cards counter with Braden Looper (8-8, 4.85) and are –118 favorites with the total set at 9 ½.

Helton set to stay in cleanup role

Struggling Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton will continue in the cleanup spot despite a 2-for-19 stretch over his last eight games through Sunday.

"You've got to consider everything that's involved with changing the order," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com. "You've got guys that are having some success. Brad Hawpe's having his best season hitting sixth. You want to go ahead and hit him fourth in a pennant race for the first time in his career? That's your option."

Helton had a blistering start to the season, hitting close to .400 until mid-May. Since then he's only batted .249, dropping his overall average to .304 for the season.

On Wednesday Helton gets the chance to break out of his slump against Florida starter Byung-Hyun Kim (5-5, 4.72) as Colorado continue a three-game series with the Marlins. The Rockies counter with Josh Fogg (5-6, 4.84) and are +107 underdogs with the total set at 9 ½.

Baseball – Hot & Cold Teams

            MLB

            Wednesday, August 1

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Hot/Cold Teams
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MLB Hot and Cold: Streaks and slumps

            HOT

            Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox stumbled out of the All-Star break, losing five of their first eight games after returning to action. But as July rolled on, they rediscovered the form that brought them success in the first half of the season.

The Sox have won eight of their last 10 games, scoring 71 runs along the way. Over the past seven days they are batting .261 with six homers and 35 RBIs, the fifth best record in the AL over that time. But it has been more than hitting that has kept them 9 ½ games ahead of the Yankees. Their pitchers have been on fire. Boston’s staff has posted a 3.48 ERA since the break and a miniscule 2.95 ERA over the past week.

Next up for Boston is a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park before a trip out west to take on the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels.

            Philadelphia Phillies

All of a sudden the Phillies are one of the hottest teams in baseball. They are 9-1 over the last 10 games and have overtaken Atlanta to close within three games of the division-leading New York Mets.

The Phillies' bats have combined for a .320 average with 24 homers and 114 RBIs since the break. In the past three weeks they’ve won series against the St. Louis Cardinals, L.A. Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Philadelphia is entering a make or break part of its season; following the current four-game series against the Chicago Cubs, they face the Milwaukee Brewers and the Florida Marlins.

            Arizona Diamondbacks

Since dropping three of four to the Brewers in mid-July, Arizona has roared back into contention in the NL West. They have taken eight of their last 10 to draw level with the Dodgers at the top of the division.

The loss of ace Randy Johnson for the remainder of the season is a huge blow, but the Diamondbacks have been getting solid starts from Brandon Webb, Doug Davis and Livan Hernandez.

They’ve also gotten consistently solid work out of their bullpen, which is seventh in the majors with a 3.58 ERA and 34 saves this season.

The next six games will decide the Diamondbacks' fate this year. They face division rivals San Diego for a three-game road series before heading to L.A. to take on the Dodgers in a series that could go a long way in deciding the NL West title.

            COLD

            Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates have lost 13 of their last 15 and have fallen 13 ½ games behind the Brewers in the NL Central.

Since the All-Star break the Pirates have been swept by Atlanta, Colorado and Philadelphia, and are at the bottom of the NL in both hitting and pitching over that time. Their pitching staff has a 5.07 ERA with a 7-16 record in July, while their batters have a .246 batting average with 84 RBIs over that same stretch.

It's not about to get any easier for the ailing Pirates. They follow a six-game homestand against St. Louis and Cincinnati with a six-game road-trip to Arizona and San Francisco.

            Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Not even the most optimistic of Devil Rays fans would have expected their team to challenge for the AL East title this season, but they also wouldn’t have expected them to fall 24 games behind division-leading Boston by the end of July.

Pitching has been the biggest problem this year. In the last seven days alone the Devil Rays staff has posted a 6.09 ERA and surrendered 44 earned runs in 65 innings of work. The bullpen in particular has struggled and they have the worst ERA in the majors this season, 5.86.

In their past three series Tampa Bay has lost three of four to the Yankees, been swept by Baltimore and lost two of three to Boston. They begin August with a series against Toronto before facing Baltimore and Detroit.

            Detroit Tigers

With the Cleveland Indians breathing down their necks in the AL Central, the pressure is growing on Detroit. In the past few weeks the cracks have started to appear.

The Tigers have lost seven of their last ten games, allowing the Indians to close to within one game. Pitching – generally considered Detroit's strong point – has been its major weakness recently.

The Tiger’s staff has posted an AL-worst 7.77 ERA in the last seven days, surrendering 57 earned runs in 66 innings of work.

With relievers Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney due to return to the bullpen after long-term absences, the Tigers problems are likely to be short-lived.

Their next three series are against the A's, the White Sox and the Devil Rays. Don’t be surprised to see the Tigers return to the dominant form they produced in the first half of the season.

                  Hot

Claudio Vargas (Milwaukee Brewers) - The Brew Crew have everything going for them to beat the odds tonight when they host the Mets. A 7-3 record in their last 10 games at home, a one-game lead in the NL Central, and most importantly, Claudio Vargas on the mound. The righty is unbeaten in all 10 starts this season at Miller Park and holds a 6-0 record (4.14 ERA) during that time. The Mets are -108 favorites for Game 2 of their three-game series against the Crew tonight.

Tim Lincecum (San Francicso Giants) - If you trust the numbers, you may want to rethink your Barry bet tonight. Two dingers away from breaking the record, Bonds has not homered once this season when Lincecum takes the mound for the Giants. Lincecum may not be helping in Barry Bonds' chase for number 756, but he has overcome a four-start rough spell to cash in on five of his last six starts. During that span, he is 4-0 with a 1.34 ERA.

                  Cold

Boof Bonser (Minnesota Twins) - Bonser has split three career starts at home against Kansas City, going 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA, but has given up five runs in 10 innings against the Royals this season. He is 0-5 in his last eight starts overall and hasn't celebrated a win since June 10. Despite his poor showing, books favor Bonser to break out of his slump tonight at the Metrodome tonight when the Twins (-135) host the Royals. The run total is set at 9.

Dallas Braden (Oakland Athletics) - The lefty is winless in three starts since returning to the rotation on July 16. He is 0-3 in those appearances and his ERA is at 4.76 in 17 innings of work during that span. The A's are listed as +101 underdogs this afternoon against Detroit.

Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics: (+101, 9 ½)

It’s been a rough road trip for the Detroit Tigers. The 11-game western run has produced only three wins heading into tonight’s game in Oakland.

The Tigers have allowed an average of 7.5 runs per game during this stretch and have had their most reliable arms get beat around.

One of those pitchers is today’s starter Nate Robertson. He allowed eight runs in just under six innings this past Friday against the Angels. The left-hander has lost his last two starts, giving up 21 hits over 11 2/3 innings of work.

                      Pick: Athletics +101

New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers: (+100, 9)

The Brewers needed every bit of their bullpen and a little extra on Tuesday to grab a 4-2 extra-innings win over the Mets. Milwaukee used seven relief pitchers between the seventh and 13th innings, including today’s scheduled starter David Bush, who was bumped from the start in favor of Claudio Vargas.

Heading into last night’s game the Brewers bullpen had a collective 6.02 ERA since the break and seemed worn down after the team's eight-game road trip last week.

"I just think things aren't going our way right now," left-hander Brian Shouse told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I don't think people really feel tired. Maybe we are, maybe we aren't. But I think if you ask any one of us, we're not tired."

Milwaukee manager Ned Yost feels confident bumping Vargas up in the rotation - he will still be pitching on normal rest since the Brewers had the day off on Monday. Vargas is 6-0 at Miller Park this season and posted a 3-1 record in July along with an ERA of 4.32.

                      Pick: Brewers +100

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers: (-104, 8)

The rival Los Angeles Dodgers will get their first look at the Giants unorthodox fire-baller Tim Lincecum tonight when the youngster makes his 16th start of the season.

Lincecum’s five strikeouts against the Braves last Thursday pushed him to the century mark on the season, posting a 100-to-40 strikeout-to-walk tally.

"You're not going to drive in too many off that Lincecum, I'll tell you that," Atlanta manager Bobby Cox told reporters after Thursday’s game. "We hit some balls hard off him but he really has some outstanding pitches - his fastball, changeup, breaking ball."

The right-hander went 4-0 in his five appearances in July with a 1.62 ERA. Lincecum is holding opposing batters to a .210 average against this season.

                      Pick: Giants -104
